They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a psychology professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious testtakers.Sian Beilock says, “They start worrying about the consequences. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. I talk about them as their cognitive(认知的)horsepower that they could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.”Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious testtakers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test. The researchers tested the idea on a group of 20 anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test. The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second test would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort.Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12 percent worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of five percent.Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test.Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B-for those who did not.The research shows that for students who are highly testanxious, who'd done the writing intervention(排解), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. Those students most likely to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these testing situations. But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.11.The purpose of the passage is ________.A. to build the confidence of the highly anxious testtakersB. to introduce a research about the anxious testtakersC. to improve the performance of the testtakersD. to tell something about the highly anxious testtakers12.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refers to________.A. attention and memory resourcesB. worries about the consequencesC. concerns about the examD. cognitive horsepower13.According to the research, the solution to the test anxiety is to________.A. sit quietly before the examB. prepare well before the testC. set their mind on happy memoriesD. write about their feelings before the test14.The result of the research suggests that ________.A. proper amount of burden may turn out to be a good thingB. avoiding facing the problem may contribute to relaxationC. facing the fears bravely may help one to achieve moreD. taking no action before difficulty may result in successBSeen from space the Earth is covered in a blue mantle. It is a planet on which the continents are dwarfed(相形见绌)by the oceans surrounding them and the vastness of the marine area.An astonishing 80 percent of all the life on Earth is to be found hidden beneath the waves and this vast global ocean pulses around our world driving the natural forces which keep life on our planet. The oceans provide necessary sources of protein, energy, minerals and other products of use the world over and the rolling of the sea across the planet creates over half our oxygen, drives weather systems and natural flows of energy and nutrients around the world, transports water masses many times greater than all the rivers on land combined and keeps the Earth habitable.Without the global ocean there would be no life on Earth. It is seriously worrying, then, that we are damaging the oceans on a scale that is unimaginable to most people. We now know that human activity can have serious influences on the vital forces governing our planet. We have fundamentally changed our global climate and are just beginning to understand the consequences of that. At normal screen viewing distance you should see the face of Albert Einstein. Take a few steps back from the image and Marilyn Monroe, a Hollywood movie star, should come into view. The classic optieal illusion (视错觉) was created by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. AsapScience reveals the proeess behind the trick. Up close, we're generally able to pick up fine details like Einstein's moustache and wrinkles. But as the distance increases, or if your vision is poor and creates a more blurred image in the first place, your ability to pick up details fades away. In this case, you only see general features, like the shape of mouth, nose and hair, and are left seeing Marilyn Monroe.Marilyn Einstein was ereated by adding a general picture of Marilyn Monroe to a pieture of Albert Einstein drawn in fine lines. Features with high spatial resolutions (空间分辨率) are only visible when viewed close up, and those with low spatial resolutions are only visible at a distance. Thus the single image changes when the viewer moves closer or farther away from the screen. The MIT team, led by Dr. Aude Oliva, has spent over a decade creating hybrid optical illusions. Dr. Oliva's group say these images not only reveal vision problems, but can also highlight bow the brain processes information. In one study, participants were shown mixed images for just 30 milliseconds, and only recognized the parts in low spatial resolution of the image. But when the images were shown for 150 milliseconds, they only recognized the image that was produced in fine details, or in high spatial resolution.Dr. Oliva says this shows that our brains discriminate (区分) between picking out fine details in some situations and broader details in others. The brain's processing of fine details happens slightly later than processing other features, according to the research.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了美国麻省理工学院的科学家利用视错觉制造出神奇的《玛丽莲爱因斯坦》混合画。

Unit 2 PoemsⅠ.阅读理解A体裁:说明文话题:文学词数:312 时间:6′Today we talk about proverbs.A proverb is a short,well-known saying that expresses a common truth or belief.Proverbs are found in most cultures and are often very old.In American history,Benjamin Franklin was famous for his proverbs. He lived in the 1700s and was a leader of the American Revolution against English rule.He was also a scientist, inventor and writer.Franklin published a book called “Poor Richard's Almanac.” He included many proverbs he had heard or created. Some of them are still used today, like:“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”Here are other examples of proverbs that Americans use.The first ones are about love. Some people say,“All is fair in love and war.” T hey mean that anything you do in a relationship or in battle is acceptable.Another proverb about love is,“Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” This means you love someone even more when he or she is far away. But other people say,“Out of sight, out of mind.” You may not even think about that person when he or she is not with you.Which of these proverbs do you think is most true?Another proverb says “Love is blind.” In other words, when you are in love with someone, you may refuse to see anything bad about that person. Some people are only interested in having a relationship with someone who is very good-looking.You might tell them that “Beauty is only skin deep”. Your girlfriend may be lovely to look at,but she may also have some bad qualities.Or your boyfriend is a wonderful person, but not good-looking.So what a person looks like is not really important.Sadly,we have no more time for this program. So we must say,“All goodthings must come to an end.”【语篇解读】谚语是精炼的语言。

Unit 2 Poems grammar课时作业第一节任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个..最恰当的单词。

Family structure is the core of any culture. A major function of the family is to socialize new members of a culture. As children are raised in a family setting, they learn to become members of the family as well as members of the larger culture. The family provides the model for all other relationships in society. Through the observations and modeling of the behavior of other family members, children learn about the family and society including the values of the culture. Family structure and their inherent relationships and obligations are a major source of cultural difference. The fa mily is the center of most traditional Asians’ lives. Many people worry about their families’ welfare, reputation, and honor. Asian families are often extended, including several generations related by blood or marriage living in the same home. An Asian person’s misdeeds are not blamed just on the individual but also on the family—including the dead ancestors.Traditional Chinese, among many other Asians, respect their elders and feel a deep sense of duty toward them. Children repay their parents’ sacrifices by being successful and supporting them in old age. This isaccepted as a natural part of life in China. In contrast, taking care of aged parents is often viewed as tremendous burden in the United States, where aging and family support are not honored highly. The Vietnamese family consists of people currently alive as well as the spirits of the dead and of the as-yet unborn. Any decisions or actions are done from family considerations, not individual desires. People’s behavior is judged on whether it brings shame or pride to the family. Vietnamese children are trained to rely on their families,to honor elderly people, and to fear foreigners. Many Vietnamese think that their actions in this life will influence their status in the next life.Fathers in traditional Japanese families are typically strict and distant. Japanese college students in one study said they would tell their fathers just about as much as they would tell a total stranger. The emotional and communication barrier between children and fathers in Japan appears very strong after children have reached a certain age.Although there has been much talk about “family values” in the United States, the family is not a usual frame of reference for decisions in U. S. mainstream culture. Family connections are not so important to most people. Dropping the names of wealthy or famous people the family knows is done in the United States, but it is not viewed positively. More important is a person’s own individual “track record” of personal achievement. Thus, many cultural differences exist in family structures and values. In some cultures, the family is the center of life and the main frame of reference for decisions. In other cultures, the individuals, not the family,is primary. In some cultures, the family’s repu tation and honor depend on each person’s actions; in other cultures, individuals can act without permanently affecting the family life. Some cultures value old people, while other cultures look down on them.(Adapted from R. L. Oxford & R. C. Scarcella,“A Few Family Structures and Values Around the Globe”)二.七选五阅读填空(2018·安徽省安庆市高三月考)Some Most Common Senior Year Mistakes Almost every high school senior makes some mistakes. ____1____. In the past three years since the painting campaign was started, many trees in that area which normally were the targets for local villagers have survived the axes(斧子).The tree art, in the style of the world-famous Madhubani painting, has now made the entire area so beautiful that passers-by can't resist taking photos. Madhubani painting, also known as Mithila painting, is astyle of Indian painting practised in the northeastern region of Bihar which is done with fingers, brushes and even matchsticks using natural colors and is characterised by eye-catching patterns. There are paintings for various occasions and festivals—such as births, marriages—and also about Hindu tales.“Normally, the Hindus almost stopped cutting trees down once we painted the tree trunks with different pictures of deities,” Siya Devi, one of the artists associated with the tree painting campaign, says. “Previously, the sight of people cut ting roadside trees was quite common. Now it gives us much satisfaction to see the crowds of tourists paying visits to this particular area to see the painted trees and take photos.”The idea is the brainchild of a local villager Shashthi Nath Jha who has been working for Gram Vikas Parishad, a nongovernmental organization, which helps to protect the rights of women and child labor.“The sight of people cutting down trees with axes and saws always gave me a lot of pain. I tried to convince them this wasn't good for environment but they never took it seriously. So I finally thought of the plan to paint scenes from Hindu classics or pictures of Gods on the tree bark thinking it can work significantly, and yes,it has begun working now,” claims Jha.

AHave you ever found yourself in this situation:You hear a song you used to sing when you were a child—a bit of nostalgia(怀旧) or “blast from the past,” as we say. But it is not a distant childhood memory. The words come back to you as clearly as when you sang them all those years ago.Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They found that remembering words in a song was the best way to remember even one of the most difficult languages. Here is what they did. Researchers took 60 adults and randomly divided them into three groups of 20. Then they gave the groups three different types of “listenandrepeat”learning conditions. Researchers had one group simply speak the words. They had the second group speak the words to a rhythm, or beat. And they asked the third group to sing the words. All three groups studied words from the Hungarian language for 15 minutes. Then they took part in a series of language tests to see what they remembered. Why Hungarian, you ask? Researchers said they chose Hungarian because not many people know the language. It does not share any roots with Germanic or Romance languages, such as Italian or Spanish. After the tests were over, the singers came out on top. The people who learned these new Hungarian words by singing them showed a higher overall performance. They did the best in four out of five of the tests. They also performed two times better than those who simply learned the words by speaking them.Dr. Katie Overy says singing could lead to new ways to learn a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are contained in a catchy 3, or memorable 4, tune 5.Dr. Ludke said the findings could help those who struggle to learn foreign languages. On the University of Edinburgh's website Dr.Ludke writes,“This study provides the first experimental evidence that a listenandrepeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.”1.The “song” mentioned in the first paragraph is intended to ________.A.recall the pastB.attract the readersC.introduce the topicD.compare the childhood with the present2.According to the passage, which language doesn't share the same root with Germanic or Romance languages?A.Hungarian. D.English.3.Based on the last two paragraphs, we can conclude that ________.A.singing is the best way to learn a languageB.the brain probably works best when the foreign language learners sing the wordsC.a listenrepeat method is very effective for any language learner D.Dr. Katie Overy and Dr. Ludke disagree with each other4.In which situation can the finding of the research be applied?A.A mother is going to teach her baby how to speak.B.A child is going to have his first music lesson.C.A student is going to learn a new English song.D.An American is going to learn some Chinese.【语篇导读】本文主要描述一项关于音乐和外语习得之间关系的研究。

childhood experiences.Michael’s experiences in elementary school will sound familiar to many parents of gifted children.According to a New York Times article,“ADHD didn’t keep Phelps from finding his focus on t he gold.” Teachers, starting in preschool, complained that he “couldn’t stay quiet at quiet time,...wouldn’t sit at circle time,...didn’t keep his hands to himself.”Michael’s mother told one teacher that Michael might be bored, and was told in response that he wasn’t gifted.Another teacher told Ms Phelps,“Your son will never be able to focus on anything.” That clearly wasn’t true, not today, and not even then.Like many gifted children,Michael could focus on things he enjoyed.According to his mother,“Michael e xcelled at the things he loved—gym and handson lessons, like science experiments.”Ms Phelps used Michael’s interest in sports to encourage his reading. She said he didn’t like to read,so she gave him the sports pages of their local newspaper.Even if he read nothing more than the words under the pictures,at least he was reading. That is an excellent strategy, one I often recommend to parents of reluctant readers. When Michael was nine,he was diagnosed with ADHD.His mother says she thought it helped a little, but Michael still did the minimum amount of schoolwork required. The success story here is not simply Michael’s recordbreaking performance at the there are many kinds of flu viruses, scientists must create a new vaccine formula (方程式) each year.Researchers must make a prediction. It is like forecasting the weather.Sometimes they are right on,and sometimes they are off.But even when the vaccine does not closely match circulating flu types,it can make the illness less serious.“The flu vaccine is not as effective as the polio (小儿麻痹症) vaccine or the measles vaccine,” says Dr.William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.“It’s not a great vaccine, but it is quite a good v accine.”But a flu vaccine doesn’t work for everyone. There promotion you were hoping for.People sa y “Don’t take it personally”and “Don’t let it get to you,” but that’s very hard to do.What are some strategies for making yourself feel better about yourself? It’s pretty clear that repeating “I’m the greatest!” Isn’t a good way to build healthy selfesteem. What can you do to feel better? Here are some strategies (策略) to try:1.Do a good deed. You’ll benefit as much as the person you’re helping.I had a friend who went through a period of hardship:she was fired from her job,she didn’t get into the graduate program to which she’d applied.Everything worked out fine in the end,and I asked her how she got through such a tough time. She said,“I was practically addicted to________for other people. It was the only way I could make myself feel like I wasn’t a total loser.”2.Keep a resolution. Not only will you benefit from exercising or cleaning out your garage you’ll also get a boost (提升) from the mere fact that you made a decision and stuck to it.3.Become an expert. Pick a subject that interests you,and dig in deep:the history Photoshop,or Kufu. This can be hard, because learning something new can also make you feel bad and stupid.So_if_you’re_less_likely_to_stick_with_it,you_won’t_benefit_as_much.However,there is great satisfaction in mastery.4.Boost your energy.Studies show that when you’re feeling energetic, you’re much more likely to feel good about yourself. Most important:get enough sleep. If you need an emergency energy fix, take a quick tenminute walk, listen to some great music,or talk to a friend.5.Challenge yourself physically. This strategy doesn’t work for me,but I know that many people feel great after parasailing, whitewater rafting,or bungeejumping. If you feel those are too exciting,a run,a bike ride,or spinning class can do it.1.What is the best title of the passage?(Answer within 10 words.)________________________________________________________________________2.Fill in the blank with proper sentence or words according to the passage.( Please answer within 10 words.)________________________________________________________________________3.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?If you become a master in something, you’ll feel content with yourself.________________________________________________________________________4.What other strategy have you ever tried in your personal experience?(Please answer within 20 words.)________________________________________________________________________5.Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.________________________________________________________________________课时作业(二十七)Ⅰ.单项填空1.C 考查冠词。
