Sian Beilock, a psychology professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. Sian Beilock says, “They start worrying about the consequences. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. I talk about them as their cognitive(认知的)horsepower that they could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.” Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test. The researchers tested the idea on a group of 20 anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test. The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second test would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort. Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12 percent worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average offive percent. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+,compared to a B-for those who did not.s, who'd done the writing intervention(排解), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. Those students most likely to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these testing situations. But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance. 16.The purpose of the passage is ________. B.Teenagers under 16.C.Adult men. D.Children with autism.详细信息17.难度:中等Elderly adults who regularly drink green tea may stay more agile (敏捷的) and independent than their peers over time, according to a Japanese study that covered thousands of people.Green tea contains antioxidant chemicals (抗氧化化学物质) that may help stop the cell damage that can lead to disease.Researchers have been studying green tea’s effect on everything from cholesterol (胆固醇) to the risk of certain cancers, with mixed results so far. They found those who drank the most green tea were the least likely to develop “functional disability”,or problems with daily activities or basic needs, such as dressing or bathing.Specifically, almost 13 percent of adults who drank less than a cup of green tea per day became functionally disabled, compared with just over 7 percent of people who drank at least five cups a day.The study did not prove that green tea alone kept people agile as they grew older.Green tea lovers generally had healthier diets, including more fish, vegetables and fruit,as well as more education, lower smoking rates, fewer heart attacks and strokes, and greater mental sharpness. They also tended tobe more socially active and have more friends and family to rely on.But even with those factors accounted for, green tea itself was tied to a towerdisability risk, the researchers said.People who drank at least five cups a day were onethird less likely to develop disabilities than those who had less than a cup per day. Those people who averaged three or four cups a day had a 25 percent lower risk.Although it’s not clear how green tea might offer a buffer (缓冲) against disabilities, lead researcher Yasutake Tomata did note that one recent study found green tea extracts (提取物) seem to increase leg muscle strength in older women. While green tea and its extracts are considered safe in small amounts, they do contain caffeine and small amounts of vitamin K,which means it could affect drugs that prevent blood clotting (凝固).1.What does the underlined word “peers” mean in the first paragraph? A.Fathers.B.Brothers.C.People of the same age.D.People living in the same neighborhood.2.What can be learned from the passage?A.Antioxidant chemicals can lead to disease.B.Those who often drink green tea can’t develop “functional disability”.C.“Functional disability” is related to problems with daily activities or basic needs.D.People who drink at least five cups a day are not likely to become functionally disabled.3.What does the fifth paragraph mainly tell us?A.How the study was proved.B.Why green tea lovers can keep agile.C.What healthier diets include.D.How to lower the disability risk.4.What has the researcher Yasutake Tomata discovered?A.Those who drank green tea can’t develop “functional disability”.B.Green tea alone kept people agile as they grew older.C.How green tea might offer a buffer against disabilities.D.Green tea extracts seem to increase leg muscle strength in older women.5.From the passage we can infer that________.A.vitamin K is contained in caffeineB.vitamin K is good for our bloodC.vitamin K is bad for our healthD.vitamin K has influence on some drugs。

A.enlarge B.changeC.shake D.shrink4.An actual fight will happen when________.A.animals meet near the border of their territoriesB.the invader enters the defender’s territoriesC.the defender notices the invader smaller than itselfD.the living resources are limited in the territory5.The last paragraph tells us that territoriality has an influence onthe________of the animals.A.communication B.conditionC.population D.migration详细信息17.难度:中等When you make a mistake, big or small, cherish it as it’s the most precious thing in the world. Most of us feel bad when we make mistakes, beat ourselves up about it,feellike failures, and get mad at ourselves. And that’s only natural:Most of us have been taught from a young age that mistakes are bad,and we should try to avoid mistakes. We’ve been scolded when we make mistakes—at home, school and work.Maybe not always, but probably enough times to make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.Yet without mistakes,we could not learn or grow.If you think about it that way, mistakes should be cherished and celebrated for being one of the most amazing things in the world:They make learning possible;they make growth and improvement possible.By trial and error—trying things, making mistakes, and learning from those mistakes—we have figured out how to make electric lights,to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and to fly.Mistakes make walking possible for the smallest toddler, make speech possible, and make works of genius possible.Think about how we learn:We don’t just consume information about something and instantly know it or know how to do it.You don’t just read about painting,or writing,or computer programming,or baking,or playing the piano, and know how to do them fight away.Instead, you get information aboutsomething, from reading or from another person or from observing usually...then you construct a model in your mind...then you test it out by trying it in the real world...then you make mistakes...then you revise the model based on the results of your real world experimentation...and repeat, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, until you’ve pretty much learned how to do something. That’s how we learn as babies and toddlers, and how we learn asadults.Mistakes are how we learn to do something new—because if you succeed in something,it’s probably something you already knew how to do.You haven’t really grown much from that success—at most it’s the last step on your journey, not the whole journey. Most of the journey is made up of mistakes,if it’s a good journey. So if you value learning,if you value growing and improving, then you should value mistakes. They are amazing things that make a world of brilliance possible.1.Why do most of us feel bad about making mistakes?A.Because mistakes make us suffer a lot.B.Because it’s a natural part in our life.C.Because we’ve been taught so from a young age.D.Because mistakes have ruined many people’s careers.2.According to the passage, what is the right attitude to mistakes?A.We should try to avoid making mistakes.B.We should owe great inventions mainly to mistakes.C.We should treat mistakes as good chances to learn.D.We should make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.3.The underlined word “toddler” in Paragraph 6 probably means________.A.a small child learning to walkB.a kindergarten child learning to drawC.a primary pupil learning to readD.a school teenager learning to write4.We can learn from the passage that________.A.most of us can really grow from successB.growing and improving are based on mistakesC.we learn to make mistakes by trial and errorD.we read about something and know how to do it right away 5.The author wants to tell us________.A.what you should do when meeting with difficulties B.where you can find your mistakesC.how you can avoid making mistakesD.why you should celebrate your mistakes。

There are currently 791 pupils on the school roll(名单). The school has a long and distinguished history, and it is also one of the oldest charities in the country, providing scholarships to pupils and organizing a Charity of the Term. The curriculum(课程) at King's is based on strong academic roots. It emphasizes and relies upon what is best in traditional independent school education: scholarly excellence supported by a caring and tutorial system, and a wide-ranging co-curricular programme. However, it is continually adapting and reacting to the changing demands of modern education: new subjects are added, new teaching techniquesare adopted, and there is an increasing awareness of the need to provide programmes of study that match individual needs and skills. The curriculum is divided into three units: the Lower School(Year 9 ), an introductory year; the Middle School(Years 10 and 11 ), working to GCSEs; and the Sixth Form(Years 12 and 13), taking AS and A levels. Full details can be found in: Shell Guide and Handbook; Middle School Academic Guide 2009—2011; Middle School Academic Guide 2010—2012; Sixth Form Guide 2009—2011 and Sixth Form Guide 2010—2012. Formal and structured educational support, for those who need it, is available at all levels. The well-stocked library is open 7 days and 6 evenings per week. ICT facilities (including the Internet) are available for all and the whole school(studies within the houses as well as classrooms) is extensively networked. Pupils are offered extensive career advice throughout their time at King's. Almost all go to university, either immediately or following a GAP year. The most popular university destinations are Cambridge, Bristol, Nottingham, Durham, Leeds, Oxford, Edinburgh, Manchester, and University College, London. Unlike many pop singers, especially those who do not write their own material,Swift has the power of turning her ideas into lyrics that will set people thinking.“Hidden beneath Taylor Swift’s notagirl,not-yet-a-woman sweetness is a very skillful songwriting technique,” wrote Leah Greenblatt in an American magazine.Songwriting,as Swift explains,is to cope with issues.“I tend to write about things that really impact me most.” There certainly seems to be something true and honest running through every one of the 14 songs on her album,Speak No w,about “th e lessons and confusion and heartbreak and all the different things that go along with being 18,19 and 20.”“For the audience too young to have experienced real passion or heartbreak,Swift’s songs are like a potential road map, promising things will work out OK,” commented Dorian ynskey in a British newspaper. Now Swift is getting ready to go further and has so far written about 10 songs for her 2012 album, which is about feelings of growing up and becoming an adult.“They’re sad,if I’m being honest.”“They’re about my heartbreaks and my moving on.But more importantly, they are about achieving contentment. You’re not always going to be perfectly happy as you grow up.”1.What does the writer mean by saying “Werde’s words do not come from nowhere”?A.Swift stands out as a singer and songwriter.B.Only Swift writes her own songs.C.Swift begins to take interest in singing.D.Swift decides to deal with problems in her new album.2.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A.Swift has the ability to write songs with deeper meanings.B.Swift is both enthusiastic and skillful now.C.Swift became a multi-award winner when she began to sing on the stage.D.Swift’s album Speak No w has 14 songs.3.Taylor Swift’s 2012 album mainly records________.A.dream and reality B.heartbreak and despairC.pain and growth D.problems and society4.What is the best title for the passage?A.Swift comes to people’s attentionB.Swift rises to fameC.Swift wins many awardsD.Swift experiences real passionB(2013·西安市第一次质量检测)More than half of rich Americans have not shown their full wealth to their children,a new survey showed last Tuesday. The survey, published by the Bank of America, studied the rich with $3 million or more in assets. It found that “surprisingly few of those surveyed have well-developed plans to preserve and pass on their assets to their children”.The majority of the 457 people surveyed are self-made,first-generation rich.Fifty-two percent of parents have chosen not to tell their children just how wealthy they are,and 15 percent have given away nothing about the family wealth. One in three parents said they had never thought to do it.They are worried that their children would become lazy, spend money freely, make bad decisions and even become a target for gold diggers.Only 34 percent strongly agreed that their children would be able to handle any inheritance (遗产) they plan to leave them.“There is an expectation about the wealthy parents that they have a responsibility to pass down their fortune to the next generation,” said Sallie Krawcheck, president of the Global Wealth and Investment Management of the Bank of America.“Our research, however, uncovered changing views of what one generation owes the next.”The trend is led by the world’s richest man Bill Gates, who promised in 2008 that he would leave his $58 billion fortune to the charity started by him and his wife, the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation (基金会),and not to his children.“We want to give it back to society in the way that it will have the most positive impact,” he said.Of his plans for his children,Gates said:“I will give the kids some money but not a meaningful percentage...they will need to work but they will feel reasonably taken care of.”5.We can learn from the passage that________.A.rich parents may not know how to manage their inheritanceB.rich parents don’t equal rich kids,at least in the USC.American children don’t get to inherit their parents’ wealthD.poor children don’t expect themselves to be as rich as their parents6.According to the survey, most rich Americans________.A.think they owe their children nothingB.think it best to give their money back to societyC.doubt their children’s ability to handle wealthD.are confident of their children’s ability to handle wealth7.The und erlined word “they” in Paragraph 6 refers to________.A.responsible children B.Bill Gates and his wifeC.first-generation rich D.rich parents8.From the last paragraph,we can see that Bill Gates wants to show________.A.the trend of leaving no inheritance to childrenB.the positive impact of charity on societyC.the way of giving back to societyD.the importance of independence for children答案:课时作业(七)Ⅰ.单项填空1.解析:考查情景交际。

Most cities can claim at least a handful of outstanding churches, palaces or houses of historical interest, and nearly everything is remarkable, from the magnificent Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square ) and the palaces that line the Grand Canal to the centuries-old homes of simple fishermen. It would be easy to say that the city itself is an enormous museum if it were not for the fact that it is so obviously alive. At first sight, Venice looks unbelievably permanent, an apparently complete Renaissance (文艺复兴) city so untouched by time that there seems no reason why it should not go on forever. Now the city is slowly sinking, as the clay on which it is built loses its elasticity (弹性) and the massive wooden piles rot (腐烂) away. Flooding, such a rare occurrence a hundred years ago now happens several times each winter. The damage caused by the flooding is immense, and the fabric of the ancient buildings is now being further damaged by pollution from the mainland town as well as by the wash produced by the constantly increasing number of motor boats that speed up and down the canals.A further threat to Venice comes from the Venetians themselves, some of whom are not particularly interested in preserving the city as one of the wonders of the world and would prefer to see it modernized.“What better place is there for the meeting of dear friends? See how it glows with the advancing summer; how the sky and the sea and the rosy air and the marble of the palaces all glimmer and melt together.” Thus wrote the famous author Henry James, of Venice, which provided the setting for his story The Aspern Papers, in the nineteenth century. The splendor of Venice has captured the imagination of artists for centuries—and not just of the great painters and novelists. How tragic now that she is faced with the double threat of man and nature. Venice indeed will be lucky to survive.36.Venice proudly boasts________.A.its beautiful churches, palaces and housesB.its unique St. Mark's Square and the Grand CanalC.its picturesque waterscapeD.its marvelous ancient buildings37.The writer thinks that________.A.Venice can be regarded as a big museumB.Venice is no longer a big museumC.Venice is different from a big museumD.Venice can never be a big museum because of its modernization38.How do the motor boats endanger the buildings?A.They produce violent movements of water.B.They pollute the air.C.They pollute the water.D.They produce too much noise.39.From the fourth paragraph, we know that________.A.Venetians are eager to modernize their cityB.Venetians value the Grand CanalC.Venetians don't care about any threat to the Grand CanalD.the threat of man is greater than the threat of nature40.In the last paragraph, the writer________.A.is very confident that Venice will surviveB.is doubtful whether Venice will surviveC.thinks that Venice will have luckD.is afraid that Venice will no longer attract artists and novelists课时作业(六)Ⅰ.1.B考查交际英语在具体语境中的使用。

When my parents bought the house, in 1982, they were only two years older than I am now. I tried to imagine myself in two years, ready to settle down and buy the house I'd still be living in almost 30 years later. It seemed ridiculous. On a practical level, there's no way I could afford to buy a house anytime soon. More importantly, I wouldn't want to. I'm not sure where I'll be living in two years, or what kind of job I'll have. And I don't think I'll be ready to settle down and stay in one place. So this is probably the generation gap that divides my friends and me from ourparents. When our parents were our age, they'd gotten their education, chosen a career, and were starting to settle into responsible adult lives. My friends and I—“Gene ration Y”—still aren't sure what we want to do with our lives. Whatever we end up doing, we want to make sure we're happy doing it. We'd rather take risks first, try out different jobs, and move from one city to another until we find our favorite pl ace. We'd rather spend our money on travel than put it in a savings account. This casual attitude toward responsibility has caused some critics to call my generation “arrogant”,“impatient”,and “overprotected”. Some o f these complaints have a point. As children we were encouraged to succeed in school, but also to have fun. We grew up in a world full of technological innovation: cellphones, the Internet, instant messaging, and video games. Our parents l ooked to rise vertically (垂直地)—starting at the bottom of the ladder and slowly making their way to the top, on the same track, often for the same company. That doesn't apply to my generation.Because of that, it may take us longer than our parents to arrive at responsible, stable adulthood. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. In our desire to find satisfaction, we will work harder, strive for ways to keep life interesting, and gain a broader set of experiences and knowledge than our parents' generation did.By Ariel Lewiton36.When the author walked through her parents' house, she ________.A.was frightened that she had no idea what she wanted from lifeB.started to think about her own lifeC.realized she should buy a houseD.wondered why her parents had settled down early37.What is the main “generation gap” between the author and her friends and their parents according to the article?A.Their attitude toward high technology.B.Their ways of making their way to the top.C.Their attitude toward responsibility.D.Their ways of gaining experience.38.Which of the following might the author agree with?A.It's all right to try more before settling down.B.It's better to take adult responsibility earlier.C.It involves too much effort to rise vertically.D.It's ridiculous to call her generation “arrogant”.39.What can we conclude from the article?A.The author is envious of her parents enjoying a big house at her age.B.Growing up in a hitech world makes “Generation Y” feel insecure about relationships.C.“Generation Y” people don't want to grow up and love to be taken care of by their par ents.D.The author wrote this article so that others would be able to understand her generation better.40.What is the main theme of the article?A.The sudden realization of growing up.B.A comparison between lifestyles of generations.C.Criticisms of the young generation.D.The factors that have changed the young generation.

AA group of scientists in the Netherlands recently used high-tech methods to examine a secret hidden inside an ancient Chinese statue. It was sent to the Drents Museum in the northeastern Netherlands as part of an exhibit. But while working on the statue, researchers took the chance to study the body of a Buddhist monk inside it.The statue was shipped to a medical center for CT scans, which are tests that produce X-ray pictures. Scientists used the technology to find out the statue’s hidden secrets. The body of the monk was sitting on top of a roll of cloth marked with Chinese characters. The cloth showed that the monk was named Liuquan and lived around the year 1100.“On the outside, it looked like a large statue of Buddha, ” said Vincent van Vilsteren from the Drents Museum. “What flabbergasted me was that, on the inside, it was the mummy (干尸) of a Buddhist monk. Later we learned that for the first 200 years, the mummy was probably placed in a Buddhist temple. Only in the 14th century did theydo all the work to move it into a nice statue. ”Researchers at the Drents Museum still have a lot of questions about the mummy. It is believed to be the only Chinese Buddhist mummy that has been studied outside Asia. Scientists hope that DNA testing on the mummy will help them learn more about it. Further research may dig up more information about the monk in the months to come.【文章大意】本文是记叙文, 介绍了一尊内藏佛僧干尸的古佛像。
