Doing familiar things in a new way will cause your brain to create new neural networks. Brushing our teeth is something most of us do daily. We really don't put that much thought into it --- but maybe we should. Experts suggest that we can stimulate this right brain by changing things up and working with our non-dominant hand. So the next time you brush your teeth, open the tube, apply your toothpaste and brush with the opposite hand.◆Shower with Your Eyes Closed69. ____________________Even if you drop the soap ---that's okay. Use your different senses. Searching for the soap or shampoaing while feeling the textures with your eyes closed works your brain and helps make you smarter. Using your fingers to make fine distinctions between objects or textures can rewire the brain areas involved in touch, suggests Larry katz, a professor of neurobiology at Duke University Medical Centre and author. This has been true for brain-imaging experiments with blind Braille readers and monkeys trained to use their fingers to get food.◆70. ___________________Can playing "Chopsticks" on the piano make you smarter? Well, according to a study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, it can. Kids who received at least three years of instrumental music training outperformed children without training in fine motor skills(精细运动技能), vocabulary and non-verbal-reasoning skills. Apparently, people who are better able to move to a beat show more consistent brain responses to speech than those with less rhythm. The study findings suggest that musical training might sharpen the brain's response to language --- making you a little smarter.V. Or is it the look on the recipient's face when they receive it that determines the true value? What gift is worth the most? This Christmas I was debating what to give my father. My dad is a hard person to buy for because he never wants anything. I pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mom saying that we were leaving for Christmas shopping for him when I came across a message on my phone that I had locked. The message was from my father. My eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming, and underneath a poem by William Blake. The flower, alone dandelion standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me. My dad had been reciting those words to me since I was a kid. That may even be the reason why I love writing. I decided that those words would be my gift to my father.I called back. I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift. I sent the photo of the cream-colored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. As I was arranging the details another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe; my dad recited it as much as he did the other. I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. The poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching I found the perfect picture. We may learn from the text that Sue Townsend is ____.A. a writerB. an actressC. a musicianD. a directorBThis is the first animated movie I’ve seen for 2016. And I must say that Zootopia(疯狂动物城)has really reached a record high in terms of overall quality. The movie is a buddy(搭档)cop film where the two main characters Officer Judy Hopps (the first rabbit to become a cop) and Nick Wilde (a tricky street cheater) have to solve the mystery of 14 missing animals. Through their mystery adventure, they meet a lot of different characters and learn things abouteach other and about themselves.Zootopia sets up a world where animals evolved to a civilization where predators and prey have learned to co-exist and create a successful society.Zootopia sets itself apart by attacking prejudice directly, attempting to examine the “why” of prejudice rather than the surface elements. Through its clever, lovely characters, extremely funny jokes, and honest feelings, Zootopia comes away as a film that is not only a joy to watch, but also one with a message that couldn’t feel more relevant right now.Just some interesting points of observation:·I personally found how they created the world of Zootopia amazing. I think that our local city planners could learn a thing or two about creating an inclusive city by watching this film.·Voices casting of the movie was great. I especially liked Idris Elba doing the voice of Chief Bogo and Shakira as Gazelle.·The movie is highly accurate to reflect the current times like how a politician is using fear to make most of the mammals fight against Zootopia’s minority po pulation of predators.·Overall Zootopia was light, funny, has a nice message about working to achieve your dreams and has an attractive pop song to go with it. But the magic is how they combine with cultural diversity and our need to recognize our own prejudices and correct it. In this day and age there should already be less hate and hopefully both children and adults learn this lesson.59. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. The opponents learn to get along well.B. Judy and Nick fail to understand and cooperate.C. Officer Judy Hopps solve the mystery of 14 missing animals on his own.D. Nick Wilde pretends to be a street cheater.60. What does the author think of Zootopia?A. SurprisingB. AttractiveC. RelaxingD. Disgusting61. What is so special about the animated movie?A. How to build a civilizationB. Finding out the mystery of 14 missing animals.C. The story of a buddy hop.D. Expressing disapproval toward prejudice in a direct way.*请按题号涂答题卡。

This is a good rule to follow when trying to judge the intelligence of others. Some people have minds that exist only in certain situations. A young man with an unusual gift in creative writing may find himself speechless in the presence of a pretty girl. He fumbles for words and talks in a halting manner. But don’t make the mistake of thinking him stupid. With a pen and paper, he can express himself eloquently.Other people may fool you into overestimating their intelligence by putting up a good front. A student who listens attentively and takes notes is bound to make a favorable impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may score near the bottom of the class. It all boils to this---you can’t judge someone by appearances. The only way to determine a person’s intelligence is to get to know him. Then you can observe how he reacts to different situations. The more situations you observe, the more accurate your judgment is likely to be.54. Dr. Chang, director of the Department of Food Nutrition, says children are consuming more meat and soft drinks. That is a thorough departure from the traditional diet of vegetables and rice and little meat. “They like big pieces of fried meat with a soft drink. So although they may eat the same volume of food, their calorie intake has increased. Now about 40 to 45 percent of their calories come from fat,” says Chang.Although on the whole Asians tend towards thinness, culture---namely Asians’ hospitality --- is a reason for the fatness of today’s generation, according to Chang. “Asian people love food,” she says. “Eating and drinking are important social and family functions.” In the past, however, big meals were only hosted on special occasions as people were more careful with money. In today’s climate of wealth and remarkable consumption, 10-course meals are no longer reserved for significant occasions.“In the past people had four or more children—now, they have one or two, so they tend to spoil them”. No! No!” for emphasis. She claims she is only trying to protect me from what she calls “bad elements”.On a sunny day, Mom rejected my request to go to West Indian Day Parade and insisted I accompany her as she worked cleaning a large house. I followed her to a grand dining room, watching her apply lemon-scented polish to the furniture. I imagined my friends dressing up in fancy costumes, enjoying the celebratory time at the parade. I glared at my mother, hoping she could feel the anger I was directing her way.But as I watched, my emotions began to change. I noticed how tenderly she rubbed her dusting cloth along a large piano in the corner. “Is this like your piano in Guyana, Mom?” I asked. “Yes. This baby grand piano is exactly like the one my Dad bought me when I was your age.” Her sigh was full of longing.I knew that my mother had been a talented pianist. I vaguely recalled dancing under the piano when she practiced for hours every day. Now she could barely play for our church choir because her fingers were gnarled from so many days spent cleaning other people’s homes.“Stop!” Mrs. Smithers, the homeowner, yelled, “That’s a very valuable instrument!”“I am well aware of that.” she said slowly, “I play for my church.”“But that’s not a church-music piano. We play classical music on that piano.”I watched as my mother’s eyes narrowed and her face tightened. I felt the same tightening in my chest.“You don’t know anything about us … or pianos!” I screamed. Immediately I worried I had done something wrong, but I also felt the tightening in my chest loosened.I waited for my mother to blame me, but instead she glanced my way, smiling proudly. “That’s all I have time for today. Although they need eight to ten hours of sleep per night to maintain physical health, emotional well-being and school performance, according to the National Sleep Foundation, most adolescents get less than eight.Newly published research from RUSH in the journal SLEEP reveals how adolescents can get more shut-eye. “There are a lot of changes a teen goes through,” said Stephanie J. Crowley, PhD.“One specifically is a change to sleep biology that happens during adolescence.” Crowley said, “there are two competing forces: one to go to bed earlier for the school schedule and the other a biological change that happens naturally to a teen’s body.” Because of this complex conflict, RUSH researchers set out to test a two-week intervention that targets the circadian(昼夜节律的) system with different behavioral measures and tries to help the teens figure out a better nighttime routine. To solve teen sleep shortage, the researchers used bright light therapy on two weekend mornings for a total of 2.5 hours. The bright light helps the internal clock to wake up a little earlier. This shift should make it easier for the teens to fall asleep at an appropriate time. Crowley and her team then helped them make up for sleep problems by providing time management tools and addressing barriers to an earlier bedtime, like limiting certain after-school activities.Researchers were able to shift the teens’ bedtime by an hour and a half earlier, and theirtotal sleep time increased by approximately an hour. “The interesting thing is that teens with late circadian clocks shifted by up to two hours earlier,” Crowley said. “And the teens who had an earlier circadian clock didn’t need to be shifted any earlier. They just needed the behavioral support of trying to manage their time in the evening and increase their sleep duration.” The researchers also found the teens in the intervention group were less tired, and less angry, and they exhibited better concentration. The students’ morning attention improved as well. 39.According to the author, what’s the major sleeping problem in teens?A.Most teens’ circadian clocks have changed.B.Most teens get less than eight hours of sleep.C.Too much sleep affects teens’ academic performance.D.Teens have to get more sleep in order to go to school.40.What’s the author’s purpose of mentioning two competing forces?A.To highlight the importance of circadian clock changes in teens.B.To emphasize the significance of teens’ night-time routine.C.To show the conflict between sleeping early and not wanting to sleep.D.To build connection between sleeping earlier and rising earlier.41.What can we learn about the bright light therapy?A.It makes teens go through many different changes.B.It makes teens without enough sleep concentrate on their study.C.It helps teens go to bed three hours earlier every day.D.It does help teens develop good sleep patterns.42.What is the best title of the passage?A.Teens’ Sleeping Time B.Helping Teens Get More SleepC.Experiment on Teens’ Behavior D.Improving Teens’ ConcentrationFour common bad habits all together— smoking, drinking too much, not enough exercise and poor diet—can age you by 12 years, new research suggests.43 They provide an even better reason for living a healthy lifestyle. Overall, the 314 people studied had all four unhealthy behaviours. Among them, 29 percent of the people died during the study. 44According to the research, the bad behaviours led to more death and made people seem 12 years older than people in the healthiest group. While on the other hand, if people add up some good behaviours, their health will benefit a lot. 45 For example, one carrot, one apple and a glass of orange juice would be enough for the fruit and vegetable need in the study. 46The US government recommends at least four cups of fruits or vegetables daily for adults, and about two and a half hours of exercise weekly.Researchers also found that the most common causes of death included heart disease and cancer are both related to unhealthy lifestyles. June Stevens, a University of North Carolina public health researcher, said the results are in line with the studies that examined the effects of health-related habits on longevity (寿命). The findings don’t mean that everyone with a healthy lifestyle will live longer than those who don’t, but it will increase the odds (几率).A.Many people find it impossible to do it.B.It should be possible for most people to manage to do it.C.The amounts are less strict than many guidelines.D.Among the 387 healthiest people with none of the four habits, only 32 people died.E.The findings are from a study that followed nearly 5,000 British adults for 20 years.F.As is well-known, a healthy lifestyle are good for people’s health.

Fill in each blank with the word or phrases that best fits the context. The publication known as The Guinness Book of World Records until 1999 hardly needs an introduction. Now named Guinness World Records, the book has 41 over 115 million copies and has been translated into 26 languages. Every year, readers are excited to catch up on all the 42 new records that people have set. Many readers, 43 , get excited enough to try to set their own records. The book receives over 40,000 record claims from over 80 countries every year. For many people all over the world, setting a record seems like a great way to make their mark. The 44 of Guinness World Records date back to 1951. A British man, Sir Hugh Beaver, went out on a hunting trip with some friends. The then managing director of the Guinness Brewery got into an argument over which game bird, the golden plover or the grouse, was the fastest in Europe. No 45 was reached, and when the trip was over, they all went 46 the answer. However, none of the reference books Beaver checked had a 47 answer. It didn't stop there for Beaver as he hit upon a great idea. Beaver knew that a book filled with facts about world records would be of great use to the public. The first edition came out on August 27, 1955 and was an instant 48 . Now Guinness World Records is a part of our culture. However, what makes so many people 49 with breaking records, even for things that seem totally ridiculous? The passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)When we think of climate change, we imagine unpredictable- weather, melting glaciers, and a shortage of fresh water. No one ever thinks about sea snail. This tiny creature, however, represents just one of the many species that are struggling to survive in our toxic seas. High acidity levels in our oceans make it difficult for the snail and other hard-shelled creatures, such as corals, lobsters, and sea urchins, to grow shells. Their struggle to survive threatens every creature in the food chain, from fish to whales all the way down to humans. Today's oceans are turning into a hostile environment for many creatures that are important to the aquatic food chain. This impacts the billions of people that rely on fish as their main source of protein. Why are our oceans toxic? The main reason is that global warming has directly affected the oceans' chemistry over the last century. The biggest factor contributing to this is the fossil fuel emission that have been dumped intothe atmosphere. Our oceans, which absorb these emissions, have protected humans from the worst effects of climate change. A century ago, oceans were in balance with the atmosphere, which meant that they could absorb the carbon dioxide that was released. As more fuel was burned, the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere started to rise. As a result, our oceans have been taking in more carbon dioxide every year. Scientists fear that by 2060, if emissions remain unchecked, the oceans will be more acidic than ever before. We can all help by employing techniques that will help decrease the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. These techniques involve putting a stop to deforestation and overfishing, promoting energy-efficient and low-carbon fuels, and regulating carbon emissions. Sadly, there is no way to reverse the damage that has already been done. We can only work hard and hope the situation improves, but it is impossible to predict what the future holds for the world's oceans.51. Why is the high acidity level in the oceans a problem for the sea snail?(A) It increases the number of its natural predators.(B) It increases the temperature of the water.(C) It makes forming a shell very difficult.(D) It causes global warming.52. Why are the oceans becoming more acidic?(A) Sea snails are dying in large numbers.(B) The oceans are absorbing more carbon dioxide.(C) The temperature of the atmosphere is rising.(D) Hard-shelled creatures are consuming more carbon dioxide.53. Which of these conservation techniques is NOT mentioned in the reading?(A) Recycling plastic, glass, and paper.(B) Regulating carbon emissions.(C) Using more low-carbon fuels.(D) Cutting down fewer trees.(B)Most schedules for a trip to the United States include glamorous cities like New York, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. But for travelers interested in history and open to discovering a city with lovely architecture, stimulating nightlife, and a unique local culture, America offers no better travel destination than Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was in the "City of Brotherly Love," as Philadelphia is sometimes called, that the United States was born. Both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were produced here. One of the signers of those documents was Philadelphia's most famous citizen, Benjamin Franklin. Travelers to Philadelphia can visit a museum on the site of Franklin's home and tour the building where the Constitution was signed. Not everything in Philadelphia is historically significant. A busy entertainment district, where trendy new restaurants and nightclubs seem to open every week, surrounds the historical area. As many young artists have moved south from New York in search of a more relaxed lifestyle and a lower cost of living, Philadelphia has become a hot place to live.Anyone visiting Philly should take the time to explore the neighborhoods that lie outside the city's center. An area of note is the bustling Italian Market. As the largest working outdoor market in the US, it is home to a wealth of specialty stores. Though the shops are predominantly Italian, other nationalities made their way into the market. After you've fed on the delectable delights of the city, a stop for a photo at the top of the stairs of the Philadelphia Museum of Art will help burn off some of those calories. After all, the stairs did the trick for Sylvester Stallone in Rocky.54. Which answer best describes Philadelphia?(A) It's a great city for gambling and nightlife.(B) Millions of visitors flock to this city yearly for its natural beauty.(C) It's a historically important city as well as a very interesting one.(D) It's one of the top 10 destinations in the world for tourists from overseas.55. Which of the following is a reason why young artists are moving to Philly?(A) It's less expensive to find an agent in Philadelphia.(B) Living expenses are less in Philadelphia.(C) It's more stressful than New York.(D) It's a perfect place to raise children.56. In the last paragraph, what is meant by the word predominantly?(A) For the record.(B) Primarily.(C) Prejudices runs high.(D) Dominance is the only way to succeed.Section CDirections: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.If having much chocolate makes your trousers too tight, blame the genes.Chocoholics no longer need to feel guilty about their craving. They are simply the victim of their genes, scientists have found.57 It also raises the possibility of designing a drug which could ‘switch off’ the gene and help people resist sugary foods. Children, in particular, risk their health by eating too many sweets and chocolates. To identify the gene, the research teams—based at Harvard Medical School in Boston and Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York—conducted experiments using mice which have differences in their ability to tastesweet foods. They compared the DNA of the two types of mice and noticed differences in the gene called T1R3.Dr. Gopi Shanker, of the Mount Sinai team, said: ‘It contains information which produces a protein called the sweet taste receptor. This recognises the sweet content of food and initiates a series of events which signal to the brain that a sweet food has been eaten.’ Dr. Shanker added: ‘Exactly the same gene exists in humans. 58 ’ Research by the Harvard team has come to the same conclusion. But Aubrey Sheiham, professor of dental public health at University College, London, said the results did not provide chocoholics with an excuse to give up dieting. He said: ‘We have always known that some people have a sweeter tooth than others. 59 They will be satisfied with a lower level of sweetness.’Mr. Sheiham warned against any form of gene therapy which sought to deactivate the sweet tooth gene. ‘ 60 We all need to have some sugar in our diet.’ The U.S. researchers are using their discovery to develop artificial sweeteners without an aftertaste.IV. TranslationDirections: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1.尽管他很累,他还是坚持训练。

An 85-year-old primary school has been lifted off the ground in its entirety and relocated using new technology named the “walking” machine. In the city’s latest effort to preserve historic structures, engineers used nearly 200 mobile supports under the five-story building. The supports act like robotic legs. They’re split into two groups which in turns rise up and down, imitating the human step. Attached sensors help control how the building moves forward.TheLagenaPrimary School, which weighs 7,600 tons, faced a new challenge — it’s T-shaped, while previously relocated structures were square or rectangular. Experts and technicians met to discuss possibilities and test a number of different technologies before deciding on the “walking machine”.Over the course of 18 days, the building was rotated 21degrees and moved 62 meters away to its new location. The old school building is set to become a center for heritage protection and cultural protection. The project marks the first time this “walking machine” method has been used inShanghaito relocate a historical building. In recent years,China’s rapid modernization has seen many historic buildingsrazedto clear land for skyscrapers and office buildings. But there has been growing concern about the architectural heritage loss as a result of destruction across the country.Shanghaihas beenChina’s most progressive city when it comes to heritage preservation. The survival of a number of 1930s buildings in the famous Bund district and 19th-century “Shikumen” houses in the repairedXintiandi neighborhood has offered examples of how to give old buildings new life. The city also has a track record of relocating old buildings. In 2018, the city relocated a 90-year-old building in Hongkou district, which was then considered to beShanghai’s most complex relocation project to date.4. How did the primary school get moved?A. By reducing the weight of it.B. By using movable supports.C. By dividing it into several parts.D. By using robotic legs.5. What does the underlined word “razed” probably mean in Paragraph 5?A. Replaced.B. Burnt.C. Protected.D. Destroyed.6. What can we infer about the heritage preservation inChina?A. The use of advanced technology leads to growing concern.B. New preservation campaigns are launched inChina.B. New technology gives new life to historic buildings.C. A building inShanghai“walks” to a new location.D. “Walking machine” makes heritage protection simpler.CNowadays medical technology seems to be advanced enough for doctors to perform brain transplants (移植). Though this procedure (程序) has only been successfully performed on animals so far, doctors are still hopingto perform this procedure on humans. However, in my opinion, brain transplants should not be performed at all, especially not on humans because of the large number of problems and side effects that could come along with. Hopefully these dangerous side effects will convince doctors not to perform this procedure on humans.Despite many benefits technology brings. I do not think this medical technology of brain transplants will help.We were all born with one brain and through childhood to adults our mind developed into who we are, so if with a different brain we would no longer be unique. A person with a different brain would seem to be a total stranger and in many ways they would be. No one should steal our identity from us, even if we are seriously injured, and change it to a completely new one. Also for the people who have died with healthy brains, that was their identity and it should not be given to anyone else.Another problem with brain transplants is how doctors can choose what are “healthy” or “normal” brains. An elderly person who has died would have an aged brain that would not be as efficient as younger person’s brain. Then would doctors have to find healthy brains of the same age as the person who needs it? This could also bring up other factors such as intelligence, sex, or physical problems that a person might have had before death. Also another problem might be how long a brain can be kept “alive” after death and how it can be kept “alive” without damage.Overall. my feelings about this operation are that it should not be done on humans until doctors have overcome all the problems and challenges that stand in their way of making human brain transplants successful.8. Why does the author think brain transplants should not be performed at all?A. The cost of the operation is extremely high.B. Doctors are not able to perform brain transplants.C. A good many problems and side effects may arise.D. This procedure has only been successful on animals9. What is the second paragraph mainly about?A. People shouldn’t give their healthy brains to others.B. Having a brain transplant means losing one’s identity.C. Transplanting brains is changing old brains into new ones.D. Having brain transplants indicates stealing identity from others.10. What is the writers’ attitude towards brain transplants an humans?A. indifferentB. favorableC. disapprovingD. objective11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To encourage brain donation.B. To stress the importance of brain operation.C. Toargue against brain transplants on humans.D. To introduce the technology of brain transplants.DJake Oldershaw and his daughter Mollie from Birmingham, Britain have asthma (哮喘). Mollie, 11, has required hospital treatment several times while Jake Says he always finds breathing more difficult when there is heavy traffic. Air quality has an enormous impact on their lives and both noticed a marked improvement during the spring lockdown because of the epidemic (疫情). Jake said, “During lockdown there was a noticeable difference in air quality. I didn't suffer any asthmatic attacks during that period. These days you can feel the effects.”However, under current COVID-19 restrictions in the UK this winter, many people probably will have to work from home. The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) says while emissions (排放) have dropped this year because we've been travelling less and doing less, the expected use ofgas boilers to provide heating and hot water could rise by more than half.Heating accounts for nearly 37% of the UK's total carbon emissions. Modelling by the ECIU suggests a 56% increase in boiler usage this winter resulting in a 12% increase in emissions of carbon. The ECIU says that's enough to offset the last two years' worth of progress on reducing traffic emissions.Jess Ralston, author of the analysis for the ECIU, said, “Working from home and having increased gas use in the home could be really critical for air pollution and also climate change. The way we heat our homes needs to change if we are to get to net zero by 2050.”Jess Ralston said, “The increase in pollution from gas boilers expected this winter provides a graphic illustration (图解) of their forgotten role in air pollution. And it is a role set to continue without practical policies to decarbonize home heating. ”The government is set to publish its Heat and Buildings Decarbonisation Strategy in a few weeks which is expected to give details on plans to try to switch British homes to cleaner sources of heat.12. How did the spring lockdown in the UK affect Jake?A. He was cured of his asthma.B. He had to go to hospital for retreatment.C. He suffered a noticeable difficulty in study.D. He didn't suffer any asthmatic attacks during that period.13. What is concerning the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit?A. The epidemic will become worse.B. Air pollution will get worse this winter.C. People may have to work from home longer.D. There is less energy for gas boilers in winter.14. What would Jess Ralston agree with?A. People prefer to work from home in winter.B. The government failed to protect the environment.C. People tend to ignore the harmful effect of home heating.D. The climate has suffered a lot from the epidemic this year.15. How to improve air quality during winter according to Jess Ralston?A. A warmer winter season.B. Less and less gas boilers.C. Practical plans from the government.D. Improved awareness of cutting down pollution.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
