2019四级阅读理解冲刺练习题(7)Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling or swimming,or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be game of some kind football, hockey, golf,or tennis. It may be mountaineering. Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonsihment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules,as there are for such games as golf and football. There are , of course, rules of adifferent kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports,we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a 'team game'. We should be mistaken in this. There are ,it is true, no 'matches' between 'teams' of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He hasto fight the forces of nature. His sport tequires high mental and physical qualities.A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for man of fifty orsixty to climb the highest mountains in Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and their certianly experience equal enjoyment.1.Mountaineering involves____.a.coldb.hardshipc.physical riskd.all of the above2.The difference between a sport and a game has to do with the kind of _____.a.activityb.rulesc.uniformd.participants3.Mountaineering can be called a team sport because_____.a.it is an Olympic eventb.teams compete against each otherc.mountaineers depend on other while climbingd.there are 5 climbers on each team4.Mountaineers compete against______.a.natureb.each otherc.other teamsd.international standards5.Choose the best title for the passage_______.a.mountaineering is different from golf and footballb.mountaineering is more attractive than other sportsc.mountaineeringd.mountain climbers答案:dbcac。

Each state has its own system of courts, composed of civil and criminal trial courts, sometimes intermediate courts of appeal, and a state supreme court. The federal court system consists of a series of trial courts (called distrait courts) serving relatively small geographic regions (there is at least one for every state), a tier of circuit courts of appeal that hear appeals from many district courts in a particular geographic region, and the Supreme Court of the United States. The two court systems are to some extent overlapping, in that certainkinds of disputes (such as a claim that a state law is in violation of the constitution) may boo initiated in either system. They are also to some extent hierarchical, for the federal system stands above the state system in that litigants (persons engaged in lawsuits) who lose their cases in the state supreme court may appeal -their cases to the Supreme Court of the United States. Thus, the typical corm case begins in a trim courts--a court of general jurisdiction-- in the state or federal system. Most cases go no further than the trial court: for example, the criminal defendant is convicted (by a trial or a guilty plea) and sentenced by the court and the case ends; the personal injury suit results in a judgment by a trial court (or an out-of-court settlement by the parties which the courts suit is pending) and the parties leave thecourt system. I' d ask whether anyone in class had ever taken such a course. Invariably a few hands would go up."What did you learn in that course? "I'd ask."Well, the main thing was learning how to face an audience ... not to be inhibited.., not to be nervous..."Exactly, when you take a course in public speaking nowadays, you don't hear much about grammar and vocabulary. You must learn to sit in front of your typewriter or dictating machine and read out to the person at the other end of the line.Of course, in public speaking, with the audience right in front of you, the problem is easier. This might. be called laziness, but Dr. Liftman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you're "hot". That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why it is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues( 自方自语) as: "Get up, John! You'll be late for work again!" The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his tempter and energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn tomake your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Liftman believes. Maybe you' re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Contempt(对抗)your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. Of the 2,500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain, almost 100now have significant collections of contemporary art in corridors, waiting areas and treatment rooms. These recent initiatives owe a great deal to one artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester Hospital in Northeastern England during the early 1970s. 2019英语四级阅读理解冲刺练习题(1)Even plants can run a fever, especially when they're under attack by insects or disease. But unlike humans, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away-straight up.A decade ago, adapting the infrared (红外线) scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick wayto take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide(杀虫剂) spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don't havepest(害虫) problems.Even better, Paley's Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night ,an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running "fevers".Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would. The bad news is that Paley's company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back intooperation.Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. "This technique can be used on 75 percent ofagricultural land in the United States, "says George Oertherof Texas A&M. Ray Jackson, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks.remote infrared cropscanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But onlyif Paley finds the financial backing which he failed toobtain 10 years ago.这是一篇说明文。

2019大学英语四级阅读冲刺练习及答案(15)

2019大学英语四级阅读冲刺练习及答案(15)阅读材料:Americans are pound of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of an elevator operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popularin the United States?Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian (百姓的) clothes. People have become conditioned to expect superior quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears uniform tends to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity (身份) than to step out of uniform?Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They save on other clothes. They save on laundry bills. They are tax-deductible (可减税的). They are often more comfortable and more durable than civilian clothes.Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tend to think, speak, and act similarly, on the job at least.Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.配套练习:1. 2019英语四级阅读理解冲刺练习题(6)As the pace of life continues to increase ,we are fastlosing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through lift, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.Stress is an natural part of everyday lift and there is no way to avoid it. In fact ,it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be .A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation adn give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health. The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress,in whatever form,we react both chemically and physically. Infact we make choice between "fight" or "flight" and in more primitive days the choice made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress,it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered.Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress.Since we cannot remove stress from our lives(it would be unwise to do so even if we could),we need to find ways to deal with it.1.People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because_____.a.they do not know how to enjoy themselvesb.they do not believe that relaxation is important for healthc.they are travelling fast all the timed.they are becoming busier with their work2.According to the writer ,the most important character for a good manager is his ________.a.not fearing stressb.knowing the art of relaxationc.high sense of responsibilityd.having control over performance3.Which of the follwing statements is ture?a.We can find some ways to avoid stressb.Stress is always harmful to peoplec. It is easy to change the hagit of keeping oneself busy with work.d.Different people can withstand different amounts of stress4.In Paragraph 3, "such a reaction" refers backto_______.a."making a choice between 'flight' or 'fight'"b."reaction to stress both chemically and physically"c."responding to crises quickly"d."losing heart at the signs difficulties"5.In the last sentence of the passage,"do so " refers to ______.a."expose ourselves to stress"b."find ways to deal with stress"c."remove stress from our lives"d."established links between diseases and stress"答案:dadbc。

While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that today’s children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children ages 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.Why are America’s kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation—brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things—and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.Given that we can’t turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation cope.At the top of the list is nurturing (培育) a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress. To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.Limit the amount of virtual (虚拟的) violence your children are exposed to. It’s not just video games andmovies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a goodmodel for your kids. Sometimes anxiet y is unavoidable. But it doesn’t have to ruin your life.练习题:Choose correct answers to the question:1.The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about people’s state of mind are ________.A. surprisingB. confusingC. illogicalD. questionable2. 2019大学英语四级阅读理解冲刺练习题(7)Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity.

Now let us look at how we read. When we read a printed text, our eyes move across a page in short, jerky movement. We recognize words usually when our eyes are still when they fixate. Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or the visual span. The length of time ofr which the eyes stop ---the duration of the fixation ----varies considerably from person to person. It also vaies within any one person according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness.Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the printed page. As a result of this misleading emphasis on the purely visual aspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on either side. Such word patterns are often constructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive fixation. All these exercises are very clever, but it’s one thing to i mprove a person’s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words. Consequently, for these reasons, many experts have now begun to question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approach whichtrains a person to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading a continuous text.Q:1. The time of the recognition span can be affected by the following facts except ________ .A. one’s familiarity with the textB. one’s purpose in readingC. the length of a group of wordsD. lighting and tiredness2. The author may believe that reading ______.A. requires a reader to take in more words at each fixationB. requires a reader to see words more quicklyC. demands an deeply-participating mindD. demands more mind than eyes3 What does the author mean by saying “but it’s one thing to improve a person’s ability to see words and qui te another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently.” in the second parapraph?A. The ability to see words is not needed when an efficient reading is conducted.B. The reading exercises mentioned can’t help to improve boththe ability to see and to comprehend words.C. The reading exercises mentioned can’t help to improve an efficient reading.D. The reading exercises mentioned has done a great job toimprove one’s ability to see words.4. Which of the following is NOT true?A. The visual span is a word or a group of words we see each time.B. Many experts began to question the efficiency of eye training.。

Each is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.Without regular supplies of some hormones our capacity to behave would be seriously impaired; without others we would soon die. Tiny amounts of some hormones can modify our moods and our actions, our inclination to eat or drink, our aggressiveness or submissiveness ( 顺从), and our reproductive and parental behavior. And hormones do more than influence adult behavior; early in life they help to determine the development of bodily form and may even determine an individual's behavioral capacities. Later in life the changing outputs of some endocrine ( 内分泌) glands (腺体) and the body's changing sensitivity to some hormones are essential aspects of the phenomena of aging.Communication within the body and the consequent integration of behavior were considered the exclusive province of the nervous system up to the beginning of the present century. The emergence of endocrinology (内分泌学)as a separate discipline can probably be traced to the experiments of Bayliss and Starling on the hormones secreting. This substance is secreted from cells in the intestinal ( 肠的 ) walls when food enters the stomach; it travels through the bloodstream and stimulates the pancreas ( 胰 ) to liberate pancreatic juice, which aids in digestion. By showing that special cells secret chemical agents that are conveyed by the bloodstream and regulate distant target organs or tissues, Bayliss and Starling demonstrated that chemical integration can our without participation of the nervous system. The term "hormone" was first used with reference to secreting. Starling derived the word from the Greek hormone, meaning "to excite or set in motion". The term "endocrine" was introduced shortly thereafter."Endocrine" is used to refer to glands that secrete products into the bloodstream. The term "endocrine"contrasts with "exocrine (外分泌)", which is applied to glands that secrete their products through ducts (导管) to the site of action. Examples of exocrine glands are thetear glands, the sweat glands, and the pancreas, which secretes pancreatic juice through a duct into the intestine. Exocrine glands are also called duct glands, whileendocrine glands are called ductless glands.57. The author's main purpose in this passage is to.A) explain the specific functionsB) provide general information about hormonesC) explain how the term "hormone" evolvedD) report on experiments in endocrinology58. What conclusion can we draw from the passage?A) The human body requires a large amount of hormones.B) Synthetic hormones can replace a person' s natural supply of hormones if necessary.C) The quantity of hormones produced and their effect on the body are related to a person's age.D) The short child of tall parents probably had a hormone deficiency early in life.59. The word "liberate" (Line 5, Paragraph 2 ) could be best replaced by .A) emancipateB) dischargeC) surrenderD) save60. It can be inferred from the passage that, before the experiments of Bayliss and Starling, most people believedthat chemical integration ourred only.A) during sleepB) in the endocrine glandsC) under control of the nervous systemD) during strenuous exercise61. Aording to the passage, another term for exocrine glands is.A) duct glandsB) endocrineC) ductless glandsD) intestinal glandsQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.Americans are proud of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of an elevator operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian clothes. People have bee conditioned toexpect superior quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears a uniform tends to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faithin the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity than to step outof uniform?Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They saveon other clothes. They save on laundry bills. They are tax-deductible ( 可减税的 ). They are often more fortable and more durable than civilian clothes.Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular typeis generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tend to think, speak, and act similarly, on the job at least.Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.62. It is surprising that Americans who worship variety and individuality .A) still judge a man by his clothesB) hold the uniform in such high regardC) enjoy having a professional identityD) will respect an elevator operator as much as a general in uniform63. People are austomed to thinking that a man in uniformA) suggests quality workB) discards his social identityC) appears to be more practicalD) looks superior to a person in civilian clothes64. The chief function of a uniform is to .A) provide practical benefits to the wearerB) make the wearer catch the public eyeC) inspire the wearer's confidence in himselfD) provide the wearer with a professional identity65. Aording to the passage, people wearing uniforms .A) are usually helpfulB) have little or no individual freedomC) tend to lose their individualityD) enjoy greater popularity66. 2019大学英语四级阅读冲刺练习及答案(9)The men who race the cars are generally small, with a tight, nervous look. They range from the early 20s to the middle 40s, and it is usually their nerves that go first.Fear is the driver's constant companion, and tragedy can be just a step behind. Scarcely a man in the 500 does notcarry the scars of ancient crashes. The mark of the plastic surgeon is everywhere, and burned skin is common. Sometimes a driver's scars are invisible, part of his heritage. Two young drivers, Billy Vukovich and Gary Bettenhausen, raced in their first 500 in 1968. Less than 20 years before, their fathers also competed against one another on the Indy track—and died there. All this the drivers accept. Over the years, they have learned to trust their own techniques, reflexes, and courage. They depend, too, on a trusted servant—scientific engineering. Though they may not have had a great deal of schooling (an exception is New Zealand's Bruce McLaren, who has an engineering degree), many drivers are gifted mechanics, with a feeling for their engines that amount to kinship.A few top drivers have become extremely wealthy, withsix-figure incomes from prize money, endorsements, and jobs with auto-product manufacturers. Some have businesses oftheir own. McLaren designs racing chassis (底盘). DanGurney's California factory manufactured the chassis of three of the first four ears in the 1968 Indy 500, including hisown second place car.Yet money is not the only reason why men race cars. Perhaps it isn't even the major reason. Three-time Indy winner(1961, 1964, 1967) A. J. Foyt, for example, can frequently be found competing on dirty tracks in minor-league races, where money, crowds and safety features are limited, and only the danger is not. Why does he do it? Sometimes Foyt answers, "It's in my blood. " Other times he says, "It's good practice. " Now and then he replies, "Don't ask dumb questions. "26. The statement "it is usually their nerves that go first" means_______.A. at first they all have a nervous lookB. they often find they can't bear the tension even if they are in good conditionC. someday they find they can't make responses to any riskD. they can continue their career at most until the middle 40s27. It can be inferred that a car accident is often coupled with_______.A. a plastic surgeonB. a companionC. a riskD. a fire28. The invisible scars of the drivers mentioned in the second paragraph refers to_______.A. the regrets left by their fathersB. the fears left by their fathersC. the cars left by their fathersD. the heritage left by their fathers29. Bruce McLaren is different from most of the drivers in that_______.A. he himself designs chassisB. he has an engineering degreeC. he manufactures chassisD. he is a gifted mechanic30. A. J. 2019年大学英语四级考试阅读模拟试题(9)There is no denying that students should learn something about how computers work, just as we expect them at least to understand that the internal combustion engine has something to do with burning fuel, expanding gases and pistons being driven. For people should have some basic idea of how the things that they use do what they do. Further, students might be helped by a course that considers the computer’s impact on society. But that is not what is meant by computer literacy. For computer literacy is not a form of literacy;it is a trade skill that should not be taught as a liberal art.Learning how to use a computer and learning how to program one are two distinct activities, A case might be made that the competent citizens of tomorrow should free themselves from their fear of computers. But this is quite different from saying that all ought to know how to program one. Leave that to people who have c hosen programming as a career. While programming can be lots of fun, and while our society needs some people who are experts at it, the same is true of auto repair and violin making.Learning how to use a computer is not that difficult, and it gets easier all the time as programs become moreuser?friendly. Let us assume that in the future everyone is going to have to know how to use a computer to be a competent citizen. What does the phraselearning to use a computermean? It sounds like learning to drive a car, that is, it sounds as if there is some set of definite skills that, once acquired, enable one to use a computer. In fact, learning to use a computeris much more likelearning to play a game, but learning the rules of one game may not help you play a second game, whose rules may not be the same. There is no such a thing as teaching someone how to use a computer. One can only teach people to use this or that program and generally that is easily accomplished.1. To be the competent citizens of tomorrow, people should _______.A) try to lay a solid foundation in computer scienceB) be aware of how the things that they use do what they doC) learn to use a computer by acquiring a certain set of skillsD) understand that programming a computer is more essential than repairing a car2. In the second paragraph violin?makingis mentioned to show that _______ .A) programming a computer is as interesting as making a violinB) our society needs experts in different fieldsC) violin making requires as much skill as computer programmingD) people who can use a computer don’t necessarily have to know computer program-ming3.
