Unit 4 Friends foreverWhen I’m sad and feeling low,And worries are all I know,Just hearing you say “Hello”Fills me with a cheerful glow. When I’m away in places new,With no familiar faces in view,It gives me pleasure to think of youAnd the adventures we’ve been through. When life seems like one long night,And nothing is ever going right,There’s just one sure delight:Friendship, like sunrise, warm and bright.CLICK FOR A FRIENDS?1. How would you feel if moving to a new town meant losing of your friends? What ifthe only way of getting new from faraway friends was writing letters that tookages to be delivered? This was how things worked not very long ago. Thanks to advances in technology, how we make friends and communicate with them has changed significantly.2. Nowadays, we can move around the world and still stay in touch with the peoplethat we want to remain friends with. Social media tools let us see what ourfriends are up to and maintain friendship. All you need is a wi-fi connection.3. The digital age also enables us to find people who share our interests, such ascollecting model cars or playing an unusual instrument. Whatever our hobbies, the Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them, even if they live on the other side of the world.4. But when you “friend” people online, does this mean that they really are yourfriends?5. It depends.6. If people always exchange true personal information online, then yes, thesefriendships can be real and meaningful. But we need to keep in mind that what we see on social media is often not the whole truth about a person.7. On social media sites, people tend to post only positive updates that make themappear happy and friendly. But smiling photos can hide real problems.Remember the saying: on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog. A youngperson could be old; a woman could be a man; we could even be sharing ourinformation with criminals.8. But this doesn’t mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater.Although technology has changed the way we acquire friends, the meaning offriendship and our longing for friends remain the same. As Aristotle said, no one would choose to live without friends, even if he had all other goods.Attributive clauses1. Rewrite the underlined sentences with that, which, who, whom or whose. Or use a past tense to distance yourself from the suggestion: I was wondering whether…Developing ideasWilliam Sydney porter (1862-1910), whose pen name was o. Most people have left work to go home, and this part of the city is now quiet. A policeman who is checking the area sees a man outside a shop. He goes up to the man and finds he has a scar on his face. They have a chat and the man starts to hell his story.∙“Twenty years ago tonight,” said the man, “I dined here at ‘Big Joe’ Brady’s with Jimmy Wells, my best chum, and the finest chap in the world. He and Iwere raised here un New York, just like two brothers, together. I was eighteenand Jimmy was twenty, the next morning I was to star for the West to makemy fortune. You couldn’t have dragged jimmy out of New York; he thought itwas the only place on earth. Well, we agreed that night that we would meethere again exactly twenty tears from that date and time, no matter what ourconditions might be or from what distance we might have to come. Wefigured that in twenty years each of us ought to have our destiny worked outand our fortunes made, whatever they were doing to be”.∙“It sounds pretty interesting,” said the policeman. “Rather a long time between meets, though, it seems to me. Haven’t you heard from your friendsince you left?”∙“Well, yes, for a time we corresponded,” said the other. “But after a year or two we lost track of each other. You see, the West is a pretty big proposition, and I kept hustling around over it pretty lively. But I know Jimmy will meet mehere if he’s alive, for he always wa s the truest, staunchest miles to stand inthis door tonight, and it’s worth it if my old partner turns up.”Writing an ending to a story4. Read Bob’s story after he was released from jail and answer the questionsStepping out of jail into the cold wind, Bob, now 58, felt lost and helpless.“Twenty years is a long time,” he smiled bitterly, not knowing where to go. He had no family, and had never heard a word from Jimmy again since that cold, dark night. “Was he ashamed of having a friend like me?” Bob lo nged for an answer.“Excuse me, sir, are you Bob?” Bob heard the voice of a young man.“Yes.” He turned around and was surprised to find a familiar-looking man in his thirties. “Have we met before?”.“No, sir,” replied the man. “My father told me to meet you today. I have a note for you from him.”Doubtfully, Bob unfolded the note. His hands were shaking by the time he hands finished reading.Bob, the doctor says I’ve only three months. I’m afraid I won’t be able to meet you this time, but you’ll always be my dear friend.Jimmy “You’re Jimmy’s son?!” Bob shouted in surprise.“Yes, sir,” the young man smiled. “And my name is Bob.”Learning to learnTo bring your story to life, describe the setting and characters.Setting: time, location and descriptions of the environment or surrounding help your readers picture the scene. For example, the street was long and dark, and there was no one around…Characters: introducing characters means describing both appearance and personality. For example, He was a tall man with curly brown hair. She always seemed happy and friendly. Friends Forever 歌词
Just when I thought I have to make it alone
You were right there by my side
Making a stand, holding my hand the way you do
The tune remind me about me and you
When I'm with you all my fear disappears
Like if I reach I touch the sky
You've got my back, pick up my slack when I can't see But nothing picks me up like knowing we'll be
Friends forever,
Face Whatever,
Friends forever,
Yay! We never can be torn apart
You and me we act so oddly the same,
The way we think, the way we play,(dot dot) Right from the start so off the charts about this thing,(o-ah) But we didn't know at first that we were making,
Friends forever,
Bound together,
Friends forever,
Yeah! We'll always be there...
Oh yes there also can be times that get rough
And all that can be said is "sorry" (Sorry!)
But we don't argue about the meaningless stuff
And we'll go on together Through any nasty weather, yeah
Friends forever(Friends forever) Bound together(Bound together) Friends forever(Friends forever) Face Whatever(Face Whatever) Friends forever(Friends forever) Bound together(Bound together) Friends forever(Friends forever) Face Whatever(Face Whatever)
Friends forever
Bound together
Friends forever
Face Whatever。
