The average one-way commute has grown by 13 percent to 25 minutes. For a growing number of people, getting to work takes more than an hour. In 2000, only in New York State did more than 10 percent of workers spend more than an hour getting to work. Now that situation can be found in several other states as well. Two pint eight million people have so called extreme commutes because they spend more than 90 minutes on their way to work.Steven, an electrical engineer, has an extreme commute between home and work. He learves home before dawn and returns after dark, but as tiring or boring as Stevens trip may sound, he says it’s the way to keep the home and jo he loves. “I have the balance right now,” Steven said. “I could do similar jobs closer, but not with the work rewards and job satisfaction I have now. and I could live closer, but I wouldn’t have the lifestyle that I desire.”Longer commutes frequently involve people who live at one end of the city and work at another. Such a pattern probably begins with companies moving away from the city center, attracting workers to move to less expensive areas further away from the city center. People see this as an opportunity because such aove may provide more affordable housing or better schools. Steven spends about $185 a week on gas. Even high fuel costs can pay off in a better quality of life.Added to long commutes are increased traffic jams, however. Comuters typically spend 47 hours a year in traffic jams, up from 40 hours a decade earlier.Q1: How much time on average do Americans spend on their way to work?Q2: What is the present situation about Americans’ commuting t work?Q3: why does Steven choose to have an extreme commute?Q4: Which of the following is the disadvantage of long commutes?Answers1C 2A 3D 4APassage 2Scripts and answersHumans’ first means of transportation were walking and swimming. 1)Gradually, humans learned to use animals for transportation. Some of you are still wondering what to do for your mom. Here's my advice.Look out for anything that she plans to buy, and buy it if you can afford it. For example, a casual dress or formal office wear. Or, it may be a hair clip with a touch of difference. Checked out if she is planning to get a new microwave or a new steam iron, and give it to her if you can afford it.You can get some ideas by considering what her likes and dislikes are. If she likes cats, how about giving her a pet or something that has a cat’s picture on it? But make sure she doesn't find out that you're getting her a present. Let her gift be a pleasant surprise.Definitely spend some time with her, especially if you are not living with her. Make her feel special. For example, you can cook a special dish for the day. You can also throw a little party and invite those who are close to her.And of course, if she enjoys outings, take a little trip with her. And if possible, take one with your entire family. She'll love it for sure. After all, she is the one who takes care of all of you. A special trip to the countryside could show her how much you care for her. Today we'll introduce you to a couple, Joan and Sandy Wilson, who could not afford to take long distances to visit their parents. His wife (S4) died giving birth to their sixth child, so he raised six children alone without (S5) remarrying, which was undoubtedly unusual back in those days. His (S6) daughter, Sonora Dodd, realized when he was an adult what her father sacrificed for his children. It was in the early (S7) 1900s and she was actually in the church one day, listening to a sermon on Monday’ Day. She thought there should be a Father’s Day celebration. So (S8) the tradition was born, on the third Sunday every June, close to the anniversary of Sonora’s father’s death.Britain took the idea of Father’s Day from the American celebration and it has been celebrated officially since the 1970s. What do British people do for Father’s Day? Well, most people buy their fathers a card. (S9) The card probably has a nice message on it saying what a great dad their father is. Some people do buy presents as well. Popular gifts for dads are probably ties, chocolates, or socks because these are things that dads can always use even if they don’t want them. Some families might do things together to celebrate Father’s Day like going for a meal. As a special treat, (S10) British people might give their dad a bit of a rest-make him a cup of tea, or even wash his car and mow the lawn.Task3 St.Valentine’s StoryScriptLet me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. He wanted to have a big army, and he expected men to volunteer to join. Seeing many men did not want to leave their wives and families, Claudius had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So he passed a law to forbid any more marriages. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn't going to support that law!I was a priest, and one of my favorite activities was to marry couples. I kept on performing marriage ceremonies, secretly. One night, we heard footsteps and shouts of soldiers outside. It was scary! The couple I was marrying escaped in time, but I was caught. I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death. Then wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed, "Love from your Valentine."I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day.Key1.He thought he was that if men were not married, they would not mind joining thearmy. So he passed a law to forbid any more marriages.2.He kept on performing marriage ceremonies, secretly.3.They came to the jail to visit him. This is why many Christmas shoppers around Europe are now going to the German city of Nuremberg to visit its famous Christmas market, Christkindlesmarkt. The 400-year-old market is a child's paradise. Its (3)150 stalls sell all kinds of toys, gifts, and special foods. A staggering (4) two million people visit the market annually. The old city and market add a special (5) feeling to Christmas. As one British tourist, Mivart Thomas, explains, “There's something quite, sort of, medieval about the (6) atmosphere here. There are quite a lot of old stalls—(7) traditional-looking stalls--and the cathedral in the background with (8) lights all around, and just a few minutes ago, the brass band was playing...playing Christmas carols. The whole atmosphere is wonderful."The market maintains its Old World atmosphere with (9) regulations saying what can and can't be sold. Not surprisingly, the focus is on the (10) family. The market's tourist officer, Gerd Lauterbauch, points out that the market's name (11) translates as "Christ child's market", and the idea behind it is to offer presents for (12) children on Christmas.Christmas markets are found in many German cities, but Nuremberg's is the (13) most famous. It gives a very (14) different impression from the one tourists expect, considering the city's Nazi past. 2022年人教pep版五下册Unit 5 Part A说课稿
Unit5 Whose dog is it? Unit 5Whose dog is it?Part A局部,本节课的课型是词汇和会话的整合课。
这一课时围绕Whose dog is it?
It’s my dog,The dog is mine. Whose dog is it?It is mine/ yours/ hers/ his/ ours/ theirs. Are these all ours? Yes,they are./No, they aren’t.
It’s my dog,The dog is mine. Whose dog is it?It is mine/ yours/ hers/ his/ ours/ theirs. 询问Are these all ours? Yes,they are./No, they aren’t.

La Boca, the port where the first Spaniards landed, is one of the poorest regions in the city. The people of La Boca share one of Argentina’s greatest passions: football. From its slums have come some of the greatest players and its most famous team. La Boca is where Diego Maradona, one of football’s leading legends, began his career. So why is football so important to Argentinians?W: Because we are a very passionate country. We are Latins.M: In every way, we have passion, for football, for music. We are also famous for the tango. People started dancing the tango in the 1800s.N: It’s a dance full of passion and emotion.N: I’ve been riding on and off since I was eight or nine and I love horses and I’ve never played polo before and apparently Argentina is the place to learn. Morning, Juan. Morning, Gada. First lesson: getting on the horse.J: Come on, Nicki. You can do it!N: I can do it. I’ve got to do one, haven’t I? Here we go!J: Ola, Nicki!N: Yes! That was one! One out of a hundred! The British originally came to Argentina for meat. Today, Argentina is still famous for its beef. It’s considered the best beef in the world. Big meat-eaters over here, aren’t you?J: Yeah. I think the, the average (consumption) of meat per person in Argentina per year is like 80 kilos in one year.N: That’s a lot!J: The average. This year, some shoppers, however, stayed up late on Thanksgiving night. This change in behavior was in large part due to the efforts of different stores to beat each other during the traditional start to the holiday shopping season. Some popular stores for the first time opened at midnight on Thanksgiving night to offer deals that once were reserved for the next day. It was reported that 24 percent of Black Friday shoppers were at stores at midnight. That’s up from percent the year before when only a few stores were open during that time. But those hours mostly attracted the younger people. Of those shopping at midnight on Black Friday, 37 percent were aged 18 to 34. Older shoppers weren’t as quick to run to the stores. Only percent of 35- to 54-year-olds were in stores by midnight. One department store, for example, attracted 10,000 people to its midnight opening and many of them were young people who turned out for the gift sets and discounted fashion items. CULTURE NOTE:
Some Chinese Traditional Festival
Spring Festival—According to the Chinese tradition, preparation for the festival starts from the beginning of the last lunar month. Usually, most people can enjoy a week-long public holiday, during which the most important are the New Year's Eve and the first three days. Chinese people will make dumplings and have family reunion dinner together. People stay up until midnight (such as watching Spring Festival Gala) to welcome the lunar New Year. People set off fireworks and firecrackers, perform lion and dragon dances to celebrate the festival. The young can get some red packets with gift money in them from the elder. Lantern Festival—the first full moon in the lunar New Year. Traditionally, it is a part of the Spring Festival. People celebrate it by hanging up lanterns, attending dancing and singing performances, making ―Yuan Xiao‖ or sweet rice dumplings and lighting fireworks. Qingming (Pure Brightness) Festival—one of the 24 seasonal division points in China, falling on April 4-6 each year. People usually offer sacrifices to their ancestors and sweep the tombs of the Dragon Boat Festival—it is in commemoration of Qu Yuan, a minister of the State of Chu. Dragon boat racing is held all over the country. And Zongzi is eaten to symbolize the rice offerings to Qu. Mid-Autumn Festival—an evening celebration when families gather together to light lanterns, eat moon cakes and appreciate the round moon.
