一个成年人成功学英语的故事(二)故事的主人是潮州东山外语培训学校的校长阮极)后来,我心血来潮去报自学考英语本科,有些中学英语老师跟我说“别鸡蛋碰石头,很难的,我考了好几年,只考过两科非专业科”。

我不信邪,报了名,买了书,当然,跟别人不一样,我把全部磁带都买回来了。

自学考试一般人都是每次报上一两门。

我却一口气报了四门,你猜第一次考试我考过多少门?四门全过了。

那位中学老师觉得不可思义,她是英语专业的,都考不过,我怎么能一下子过四门。

跑来问我有什么诀窍。

我说诀窍就是真正会听说。

没几个人像我这样对付考试,大多数人都在研究试题,我却从不干这些无聊的事(Terry的提示:真心要考高分,就是要真正掌握知识,而不仅是天天做模拟题)。

以前我比较穷,只有摩托车(再次强调其实现在也不富,我的BMW还只是帖在幻想板上)。

整天骑着摩托车到三个工厂做翻译。

I know that John is his only grandson, who is everything to him. I really don't want to make him unhappy. Therefore, I always allow John to eat the chocolates his grandpa has bought him.Yesterday evening I kissed John good night and asked him to say his prayers before going to bed, then I left his bedroom. A few minutes later, I heard John shouting word by word, "Tomorrow -is-my- birthday. May - God- bring - me - a - big - box - of - chocolates. " I went to his room and saw him kneeling on the ground shouting out his prayers. I said, "Don't shout, John. Your dad is sleeping now! God can hear you no matter how softly you talk to him. Who Deserves Help?Many years ago, there lived a very rich man who wanted to do something for the people of his town. But first he wanted to find out whether they deserved his help. So he placed a very large stone in the center of themain road into town. Then he hid behind a tree and waited. Soon an old man came along with his cow."Who put this stone in the center of the road?" said the old man, but he did not try to remove the stone. Instead, with some difficulty he passed around the stone and continued on his way. Another man came along and did the same thing; then another came, and another. All of them complained about the stone in the center of the road, but not one of them tried to remove it. Late in the afternoon, a young man came along. He saw the stone and said, "The night will be very dark. Some neighbor will come along later in the dark and will fall against the stone. "The young man then began to move the stone. He pushed and pulled with all his strength to move it to one side. But imagine his surprise when under the stone he found a bag full of money and this message: "This money is for the thoughtful person who removes this stone from the road. That person deserves help."7. Be Medically ExaminedA young man was called up for army service and had to go to be medically examined. The doctor was sitting at a desk when he went in. He said to the man. "Take your coat and shirt off, loosen your belt and sit on that chair. "The young man did so. The doctor looked at him for a moment without getting up from his chair and then said, "All right. Put your clothes on again. ""But you haven't examined me at all," the young man said in a troubled voice."It isn't necessary, "the doctor said gently. "When I told you to take your coat and shirt off, you heard me all right, so you aren't deaf. You saw the chair I pointed to, so your eyesight's good enough for the army. Balzac's HandwritingBalzac, the famous French writer, wrote many books. His novels are read by people throughout the world. He was said to be good at many things. I'm going to ask my chauffeur to come up here and answer your question. "13. Florence Nightingale"Be a lady, dear. That's what we want!" How many times pretty young Florence Nightingale heard these words from her father and mother! But for her, being a lady was not enough. She wanted to do something for others.Florence's father was a very rich man. Florence took lessons in music and drawing and read great books. She could speak French, German, and Italian as well as English. And she traveled a great deal with her mother and father.As a child she felt that visiting sick people was both a duty and a pleasure. She enjoyed helping them. As often as she could, she visited hospitals in other countries. She saw so much suffering that she knew she must help.At last her mind was made up. " I'm going to be a nurse," she described."Nursing isn't the right work for a lady," her father told her."Then I will make it so," she smiled. And she went to learn nursing in Germany and France. When she returned to England, Florence started a nursing home for women. Here she did everything from washing floors to giving her patients new hope.During the Crimean War in 1854 many soldiers were wounded or became ill. News reached England that they received very little care. At once Florence Nightingale wrote to the War Office and offered her services. She went with a band of thirty-eight nurses to the hospitals at Scutari.What they saw there was even worse than they expected. Dirt and death were everywhere to be seen and smelled. The officer there did not wantany women to tell him how to run a hospital, either. But the brave nurses went to work.Florence used her own money and some from friends to buy clothes, beds, medicines, and food for the men. Her only pay was smiles from the lips of dying soldiers. But they were more than enough for this kind woman.She fell dangerously ill herself, but she did not stop working. Her thin hands worked day and night. Even in the last hours of night— she could be seen walking with a lamp past each bed. The soldiers often kissed her shadow as "the lady of the lamp " went by.After the war she returned to England and was honored for her services by Queen Victoria.But Florence said that her work had just begun. She raised money" to build the Nightingale Home for Nurses in London, and she asked young girls to learn nursing there. she also wrote a book on public health which was printed in several countries.Florence Nightingale did at the age of ninety,still trying to serve others through her work as a nurse. An Advertisement for Modern BicycleTom saw an advertisement in a newspaper for a beautiful modern bicycle which cost $50, so he went to the shop which had put the advertisement in and asked to see one of their wonderful bicycles.The shopkeeper was very happy to show one to Tom, who examined it carefully and then turned to the shopkeeper, saying, "There isn't lamp on this bicycle, but there was one on the bicycle in your advertisement. " "Yes, sir," answered the shopkeeper, "but the lamp isn't included in the price of the bicycle. It's an extra.""Not included in the price of the bicycle?" Tom said angrily. "But that's not honest. If the lamp's in the advertisement, it should have been included inthe price you gave there. ""Well, sir," answered the shopkeeper calmly, "there is also a girl on the bicycle in our advertisement, but we don't supply one of them with the bicycle either. "15. A Clever InterpreterA famous writer who was visiting Japan was invited to have a lecture at a university to a large group of students. As most of them could not understand spoken English, he had to have an interpreter .During his lecture he told an amusing story which went on for rather a long time. He called the guests to swim and announced, "To anyone brave enough to swim across this pool, I will give the choice of a thousand acres of my oil fields, 10,000 head of cattle, or my daughter's hand in marriage . "No sooner were his words spoken than a young man plunged in, swan across the pool and climbed out unscathed but breathless . "Congratulations!" the tycoon greeted him, "Do you want my oil fields?""No!" gasped the guest."The 10,000 head of cattle?""No!" the young man shouted. "Well, how about my daughter's... ""No!""You must want something," said the puzzled host."I just want to know the name of the guy who pushed me in!"17. A Clever ManAS a result of weather delays, Boston's Logan International Airport was teeming with frustrated travelers. When I checked in for my flight, I could see from the size of the crowd that boarding was going to be a lengthy process.One well-dressed young man handled the situation with true Yankee ingenuity . I watched as he sat down next to a mother who was coping with a baby and two preschool children, tie struck up a conversation with her, making a point of learning the youngsters' names.The boarding call for passengers with young children was announced. "May I help you with Rob and Jenny?" the young man asked. Tucking his briefcase under one arm , he gave each child a helping hand and followed mother and baby to the plane.18. Do I Have to Give the Watch Back?It was very hot in the small court-room and everybody was feeling sleepy. After a tiring mornings, the clerks were anxious to get off to lunch and even the judge must have felt relieved when the last case came up before the court. A short, middle-aged man with grey hair and small blue eyes was now standing before him. The man had a foolish expression on his face and he kept looking around stupidly as if he was trying hard to understand what was going on.The man was accused of breaking into a house and stealing a cheap watch. The witness who was called did not give a very clear account of whathad happened. He claimed to have seen a man outside the house one night, but on being questioned further, he confessed that he was not sure whether this was the man. The judge considered the matter for a short time and then declared that as there was no real proof, the man could not be found guilty of any crime. He said that the case was dismissed and then rose to go. Meanwhile, the accused looked very puzzled. It was clear that he had not understood a thing. Noticing this, the judge paused for a moment and then the man said suddenly,"Excuse me, sir,but do I have to give the watch back or not?"19. Minding His T's and 2'sDr. Irving Wright, president of the American Federation for Aging Research, tells the story of a psychological test that was developed to measure the mental agility of elderly people. A young psychologist was chosen to try out the test on a 91-year-old man.The psychologist explained that it was a verbal test and that some of the questions were easy, while others were difficult. The first question, for example, was "What two days in the week begin with T?""That's easy," the man replied. "Today and Tomorrow. "The psychologist paused, studied his papers, and moved to the next question. "This one is much more difficult. How many seconds are there in a year?"Without blinking an eye, the man said, "Twelve.""What did you say?" asked the psychologist."Twelve," said the elderly man, smiling. "The second of January, thesecond of February. . . "20. A BetA programmer and an engineer are sitting next to each other on a long flight from Los Angeles to New York. The programmer leans over to theengineer and asks if he would like to play a fun game. The engineer just wants to take a nap, so he politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks . The programmer persists and explains that the game is really easy and has a lot of fun. He explains "I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me $5. Then you ask me a question, and if I don't know the answer, I'll pay you $ 5. " Again, the engineer politely declines and tries to get to sleep. The programmer, now somewhat agitated, says, "Ok, if you don't know the answer you pay me $5, and if I don't know the answer, I'll pay you $50!" This catches the Engineer's attention, and he sees no end to this torment unless he plays, so he agrees to the game. The programmer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the earth to the moon?" The engineer doesn't say a word, but reaches into his wallet, pulls out a five dollar bill and hands it to the programmer. Now, it's the engineer's turn. He asks the programmer, "What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down on four?" The programmer looks up at him with a puzzled look. He takes out his laptop computer and searches all of his references. He taps into the Aerophone with his modem and searches the net and the Library of Congress. Frustrated,he sends e-mail to his co-workers-all to no avail. After about an hour,he wakes the engineer and hands him $50.The engineer politely takes the $5O and turns away to try to get back to sleep,The programmer,more than a little miffed, shakes the engineer and asks,"Well,so what's the answer?" Without a word,the engineer reaches into his wallet,hands the programmer $5,and turns away and goes back to sleep.21 .The Man Who Had No FriendsEdgar wondered why he didn't have many friends. The reason was as always taking, never giving, people soon got tired of that.One day Edgar told Bill, "I'd like to give a party on Saturday. I'd like you to come and bring Martha, too. ""Thanks, Edgar. We'd be happy to come. ""Perhaps you'd be willing to bring your violin. You and Martha sing well together. I'm sure everyone will want you to sing for us. ""We'd be glad to sing. We'll try to learn a few new songs between now and Saturday. We can start practicing this evening. ""Good! Don't forget to practice ' You Are My Sunshine'. That's the one I like best. One day he bought a picture."We don't need a man for this. I'll put that picture up on the wall in no time."Then he took off his coat and began. But he had no nails. He sent his daughter to buy some. Then he sent one of the boys to tell her what size to buy. Then he shouted."Now you go and get me my hammer, Will; and bring e the ruler, Tom;and I shall want the ladder, Jim. And won't go away, Maria, because I shall want you to hold the light. Now, Tom, hand me the picture. "When all was ready and Tom handed him the picture, he dropped it, and it came out of the frame . He tried to save the glass, and cut himself. Then he ran round the room, looking for his handkerchief. Suddenly he remembered it was in the pocket of his coat. Now everybody started looking for his coat while he sat and shouted.―Doesn’t anybody in the whole house know where my coat is?‖The he discovered that he was sistting on it, and shouted again.―Oh, I have found it myself. You can never find anything, you fools.‖Half an hour had passed by now. uncle Podger started to work all over again with the whole family standing round ready to help.……At about midnight, the picture was up at last.
