NoisePollution(噪音污染)Noise Pollution We know the sounds of cities are loud enough to cause great harm to people's hearing in the U.S. One person out of twenty has got some hearing loss. And all over the world the situation is getting worse and worse all the time since the noise increases with the population. With the development of machines, noise has also increased greatly in the 20th century. We live surroundedby loud planes, trucks and electric tools. TV sets and radios add up to 90 or J00 decibels, a certain unit used to measure the loudness of sound. A normal dialogue reaches 55 decibels; a plane goes to 100, and an ordinary train, reaching the station, can be twice as loud as the loudest plane. Disco music reaches about 118. Atdecibels the ear stops hearing sound, and pain starts. How terrible if things go onlike this!
As a high school student with a keen interest in biology, Ive always been fascinated by the intricate relationship between plants and their environment. One of the most critical factors influencing plant growth and development is temperature. It plays a crucial role in various biological processes, from germination to photosynthesis, and even to the plants ability to withstand harsh conditions. My journey into understanding the impact of temperature on plants began in my schools greenhouse. Our biology teacher assigned us a project to observe the growth of different plant species under varying temperature conditions. We were to document the changes and draw conclusions about how temperature affects their growth patterns.I chose to work with a variety of seedlings, including tomatoes, sunflowers, and peas. The experiment was set up with three groups, each placed in a different temperaturecontrolled environment: one at a low temperature, one at room temperature, and one at a high temperature. Over the course of several weeks, I diligently recorded the germination rates, the speed of growth, and the overall health of the plants. What I observed was truly enlightening. The seedlings in the lowtemperature environment took longer to germinate and grew at a slower pace. Some seeds failed to sprout at all, indicating that the cold was inhibiting their metabolic processes. On the other hand, the plants in the hightemperature environment showed rapid initial growth but soon began to wilt and show signs of heat stress. Their leaves turned yellow and started to drop, suggesting that the high temperatures were causingdehydration and cellular damage. The plants in the room temperature environment, however, thrived. They germinated within a reasonable timeframe and grew steadily, showing robust health and vibrant green leaves. This group demonstrated the optimal temperature range for these species, highlighting the importance of maintaining a balance in environmental conditions. This handson experience led me to delve deeper into the subject. I learned that temperature affects the rate of photosynthesis, with most plants having a specific range of temperatures where this process is most efficient. Too cold, and the enzymes involved in photosynthesis become less active, reducing the plants ability to convert sunlight into energy. Too hot, and the plants cells can become damaged, leading to a decrease in photosynthetic efficiency and even cell death. Moreover, I discovered that temperature also influences the plants ability to adapt to its environment. Some plants, known as thermophiles, thrive in high temperatures and have developed mechanisms to prevent overheating, such as larger surface areas for heat dissipation. Conversely, psychrophilic plants are adapted to live in cold environments, often producing antifreeze proteins to prevent ice crystal formation within their cells. In agricultural settings, understanding the impact of temperature on plants is essential for optimizing crop yields. Farmers must consider factors like the planting season, the use of greenhouses, and even the selection ofcrop varieties that are best suited to the local climate. For instance, in regions with a short growing season, farmers might opt for varieties that have a shorter maturation period to ensure they can be harvested before the onset of colder weather.Furthermore, with the ongoing climate change, the study of temperatures effect on plants has become even more relevant. As global temperatures rise, plants may experience shifts in their growing seasons, altered pollination patterns, and increased vulnerability to pests and diseases. This calls for a greater understanding of plant responses to temperature fluctuations and the development of strategies to help plants adapt to these changes. In conclusion, my exploration into the world of botany has shown me that temperature is a fundamental factor in plant life. It influences everything from the most basic cellular processes to the plants ability to survive and thrive in its environment. As a high school student, I am excited to continue learning about the complexities of plant biology and hope to contribute to the ongoing research on how we can help plants adapt to the challenges posed by a changing climate.。

Title: The Impact of Noise Pollution on the Ocean。
The ocean, a vast expanse of life and mystery, is not immune to the effects of human activity. Among the various forms of pollution it faces, noise pollution stands out as a significant but often overlooked threat. In this essay, we will delve into the detrimental effects of noise pollution on the ocean ecosystem and explore potential solutions to mitigate its impact.Firstly, it is crucial to understand the sources of oceanic noise pollution. Anthropogenic activities such as shipping, construction, offshore drilling, and naval exercises are primary contributors. These activities introduce sounds ranging from low-frequency hums to deafening blasts, disrupting the natural acoustic environment of the ocean. Additionally, the proliferation of maritime transportation has led to an increase in vessel traffic, amplifying noise levels in marine habitats. The consequences of noise pollution on marine life are profound and multifaceted. One of the most affected groupsis marine mammals, particularly cetaceans like whales and dolphins, which rely heavily on sound for communication, navigation, and foraging. Excessive noise can interferewith their ability to echolocate, locate prey, and communicate with conspecifics, leading to disorientation, stress, and even strandings.Furthermore, noise pollution impacts various other marine organisms, including fish, invertebrates, and plankton. Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to anthropogenic noise can disrupt fish behavior, such as feeding and reproduction patterns, ultimately affecting population dynamics. Invertebrates with sensitive auditory structures may suffer from direct physical damage oraltered behavior due to noise-induced stress. Even plankton, the foundation of the marine food web, can experience changes in distribution and abundance in response to noise disturbance. The ecological repercussions of noise pollution extend beyond individual species to entire marine ecosystems. Changes in animal behavior and population dynamics can disrupt trophic interactions, leading to cascading effects throughout the food web. For example, declines in fish populations due to noise disturbance can affect the abundance of their predators, ultimately impacting higher trophic levels, including marine birds and mammals. In addition to ecological impacts, noise pollution poses socio-economic challenges, particularly for coastal communities dependent on marine resources. The disturbance of fish populations and alteration of habitat due to noise pollution can jeopardize livelihoods reliant on fishing and tourism. Furthermore, noise pollution from maritime activities can degrade the quality of recreational experiences, diminishing the aesthetic value of coastal environments.Addressing the issue of oceanic noise pollution requires a multi-faceted approach involving collaboration among governments, industries, scientists, and conservationorganizations. Implementing regulations to limit noise emissions from shipping, offshore construction, and military exercises is essential.
We already know that the underwater world is anything but silent. It is full of natural sounds produced by animals and by the motion of the atmosphere and water. But today's researchers are increasingly concerned about the man-made noises under the water. They are confusing-and even killing-fish,whales and other marine animals.Although hearing is important to all animals, the special qualities of the undersea world emphasize the use of sound. Underwater sound allows marine animals to gather information and communicate at great distances and from all directions. Loud underwater noises can cause damage to their hearing. And nowadays it's becoming too much for marine wildlife. Evidence shows that whales will swim hundreds of miles, rapidly change their depth, and even beach themselves to get away from the sounds of sonar. You might think lower noises, typically caused by shipping or construction, do not pose a threat to marine animals. In fact, while they may not kill the animals directly, they can disturb their ability to locate food, find mates and avoid predators(掠食动物).Scientists looked at the effects of noise from small motorboats on coral-reef fish at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. In the lab, the fish had been trained to recognize the smell of three common predators as a threat. Some fish were trained in the presence of boat noise, while the others had training with the natural sounds of the ocean. It turned out that the first group showed no fright reactions when exposed to the predator. However, the other group was scared. And under the influence of underwater noise on this group, only 20 percent of fish survived, compared to almost 70 percent of unexposed fish.Humans rely on the ocean for its natural resources and biodiversity. The ocean also plays an important role in regulating(调节)temperatures. As Cousteau said,"For most of history, man has had to fight nature to survive; in this century he is beginning to realize that, in order to survive, he must protect it.整个课堂设计以三个主题展开:分析文本体裁;解构概要写作步骤;总结概要写作原则。

物候的影响因素600字英语作文
物候的影响因素600字英语作文英文回答:Phenology, the study of the timing of biological events in relation to environmental conditions, is influenced by a multitude of factors. These factors can be broadly categorized into two main groups: biotic and abiotic factors.Biotic factors are those that originate from living organisms, including:Inter-plant competition: Competition for resourcessuch as light, nutrients, and water can affect the timingof flowering, fruiting, and other plant phenological events.Herbivory: Feeding by herbivores can remove or damage plant tissues, influencing the timing of leaf production, flowering, and fruiting.Pollination: Insect and animal pollination can affect the timing and success of seed set, which in turn influences the timing of subsequent phenological events.Disease and parasitism: Pathogens and parasites can weaken or kill plants, altering the timing of phenological events or even preventing their occurrence.Abiotic factors are those that originate from the non-living environment, including:Temperature: Temperature is a primary driver of phenological events, influencing seed germination, leaf unfolding, flowering, and senescence.Photoperiod: The length of day and night affects the timing of many phenological events, particularly those related to reproduction and growth.Water availability: Water stress can delay or suppress phenological events, while ample water availability can promote earlier and more synchronized timing.Light intensity: Light intensity can affect the timing of flowering and other phenological events, especially in plants that use sunlight as a cue for reproduction.Soil conditions: Soil characteristics, such as pH, nutrient availability, and drainage, can influence the timing of plant growth and development. The interplay of these biotic and abiotic factors results in the complex patterns of phenological events observed in nature. Understanding these factors is crucial for predicting and managing the impacts of environmental change on ecosystems and agricultural systems.
Air plays a crucial role in the growth and health of plants, including flowers and grasses. It is an essential component for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy. Heres a detailed look at how air affects the wellbeing of these green organisms.1. Composition of Air: Air is primarily composed of nitrogen about 78%, oxygen about 21%, and trace amounts of other gases like carbon dioxide, argon, and water vapor. Oxygen is vital for the respiration process in plants, while carbon dioxide is a key ingredient for photosynthesis.2. Photosynthesis: During photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and use sunlight to convert it into glucose, a form of sugar that provides energy for growth. This process also releases oxygen back into the atmosphere, which is essential for life on Earth.3. Respiration: Just like animals, plants also respire. They take in oxygen from the air and use it to break down glucose, releasing energy that is used for various cellular activities.4. Transpiration: This is the process by which plants lose water through tiny pores called stomata, found mostly in the leaves. The exchange of gases through stomata is regulated to maintain the balance of water and gases, which is crucial for the plants health.5. Air Quality: The quality of air can significantly impact plant health. Pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter can damage plant tissues, reduce photosynthesis efficiency, and even lead to plant death.6. Carbon Dioxide Levels: An increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide can enhance photosynthesis, a phenomenon known as the CO2 fertilization effect. However, this can also lead to changes in plant physiology and ecosystem dynamics.7. Temperature and Humidity: Air temperature and humidity influence the rate of photosynthesis and transpiration. Warmer temperatures can increase the rate of these processes, while higher humidity can reduce the rate of water loss through transpiration.8. Wind: Wind can affect plants by influencing the rate of evaporation and the distribution of pollinators and seeds. Strong winds can also cause physical damage to plants.9. Atmospheric Pressure: Changes in atmospheric pressure can affect the rate of gas exchange in plants, although this is generally a minor factor in most environments.10. Climate Change: Rising global temperatures and altered precipitation patterns due to climate change can stress plants, affecting their growth cycles, distribution, and susceptibility to pests and diseases. In conclusion, air is a fundamental resource for the life cycle of plants, influencing their growth, development, and survival. Understanding these interactions is essential for agricultural practices, ecosystem management, and conservation efforts.。

1Scientists have known for years that plants respond to sounds around them.Forexample, flowers make sweeter nectar to the sound of buzzing bees. But now scientists in Israel have shown that plants also seem to be doing some “talking ”.2As scientists studied the sounds, they began to notice patterns.Plants hardly clicked at all when they had enough water. But as their soil got drier, they clicked more and more. When scientists cut off stems from the plants, the plantsalso clicked more. But the clicking wasn t the same as when the plants needed water.3It s not clear how the plants make the sounds. One idea is that air bubbles form inside the plants stems, and that these popping bubbles make a clicking sound. It s also not clear whether the plants are making the sounds on purpose.4In fact, researchers trained an Artificial Intelligence (AI)system to identify different kinds of clicking sounds. The system is able to tell the difference between plants that need water and plants with cuts about 70%of the time. The result suggests that researchers may one day be able to use a plant s sounds to figure out when it is having trouble, and whattrouble it is having. That could be very expedient tofarmers.475The new discovery raises many more questions. One important question is:Do plants make sounds to communicate with each other?Other research has shown that plants do seem to communicate in some ways.Plants being attacked by insects send chemicals into the air.Soon, nearby plants that haven t been attacked yet start to make other chemicals that don t taste good to insects.6Scientists say wheat plants, like the ones above, also make clicks. In the future, plant sounds could help farmers figure out when their crops are having trouble.Another big question is:Is anything listening to plants?Take mice for example. They depend on plants, and can hear ultrasonic frequencies. The clicks may tell these animals when a plant isn t healthy,so they can avoid it.Scientists hope to learn what else might cause plants to make sounds, and whether AI can help identify those conditions, too.ReadingCheckDetailVocabulary Inference Inference 1.In what situation do plants rarely make sounds?A.When they are cut off.B.When they feel a bit drier.C.When they have enough water.D.When they are bitten by insects.2.What does the underlined word“expedient”in paragraph4mean?A.Interesting.B.Beneficial.C.Influential.D.Meaningful.3.What does the author think of the fact of plants talking?A.It s worrying.B.It s practical.C.It s objective.D.It s meaningless.4.Where is the text probably taken from?A.A science magazine.B.A biology textbook.C.The encyclopedia.D.Theanecdote. 48Crazy English2023.8LanguageStudyⅠ.Text⁃centered chunksrespond to对……做出反应cut off切断figure out理解;弄明白raise questions提出问题take...for example以…… Difficult sentence in the textScientists hope to learn what else might cause plants to make sounds, and whether AI can help identify those conditions, too.

Y ou can almost hear the law of unintended consequences at work among the flora and fauna of northwestern New Mexico.
Thousands of natural gas wells dot the landscape there, along with the compressors that get the gaseous fuel ready to travel through pipelines. The compressor rumble is constant, and seems to be attracting black-chinned hummingbirds, according to a new experiment. The findings appeared this week in the journalProceedings of the Royal Society B.
Researchers set up test flower beds and tracked bird landings. They found that the hummingbirds were five times more likely to visit noisy areas. Why? Perhaps because the western scrub jay tends to avoid noise. And western scrub jays eat baby hummingbirds. The situation is good for wildflowers that are pollinated by the hummingbirds.
But the absence of jays seems to be bad for other plants. For example, the pinon pine relies on scrub jaysto spread its seeds. As a result, pine seedlings were four times less abundant at noisy sites than quiet ones.
Pinon seedlings take decades to become pinon pines, a critical habitat for hundreds of species in the western U.S. So the forest of the future may never take root. Darn noisy neighbors.
GPS is utterly useless for finding your wife or kids (or even locating yourself) at the mall. What we need is an indoor equivalent of GPS. And researchers have been working on it.
Most recently a team of Stanford students launched a project called WiFiSLAM. Their goal is to develop mobile applications that let your smart phone pinpoint its location in real-time to within 2.5 meters. It would do it by sensing ambient WiFi signals already present in buildings. The
phone's internal compass and accelerometer also come into play to help determine its location.
The students also want to create apps that could be use for marketing, depending upon what store a smart phone user is standing near. Another app might connect the user's location to social networks.
Other indoor positioning systems try to find a user's position using radio, ultrasound or infrared signals. But these approaches require special radio-frequency tags. WiFiSLAM's approach is promising because it uses existing wireless networks and the smart phone already in your pocket.
