We were focusing on the theme of loving others in practical ways through our gifts, and something in particular happened during one of the sessions(会议)will remain imprinted in memory.A young Syrian woman (Lilith) was invited to the conference at the last minute, and everyone seemed surprised and delighted that she’d actually come. Just a few days earlier, Lilith had fled her country and found refuge with one of the women attending the conference. As an Orthodox Christian in Syria, she and her loved ones had become attacked targets of violent terrorist groups in the country’s ongoing civil war.Lilith had witnessed horrors no one of her young age should ever see. Despite the further danger it presented, she’d decided to leave her home and her family to find safety here in America. Knowing some of her story, and seeing her sitting through the sessions at the retreat(畏缩不前)---head, covered in a scarf, bowed toward the floor---broke my heart. Lilith’s story touched all of us, including Pam, who was quilt maker. Pam had just finished a beautiful quilt, and had brought it with her. She, along with a few of the leaders, decided to give it to Lilith as a symbol of their comfort and love.During our last session, Lilith was called forward and prayed over, hugged, and wrapped up in that beautiful quilt. I thought of the many hours Pam undoubtedly spent working on it, and the terrible events that led Lilith to this moment---surrounded by the beauty and love quiltembodied. I wept. When they told her it was for her, she wept.25. What is the purpose of the women’s conference?A. To help others in a practical way.B. To win equal rights for women.C. To find a better job.27. From this passage, we know that the writer is____________.A. enthusiasticB. sympatheticC. intelligentD. talented28. What is the meaning of the underlined word?A. a place of interestB. a place of dangerC. a place of conferenceD. a place of shelterCY ou know the feeling that you have left your phone at home and feel anxious, as if you have lost your connection to the world. “Nomophobia”(无手机恐惧症) affects teenagers and adults alike. Y ou can even do an online test to see if you have it. Last week, researchers from Hong Kong warned that nomophobia is infecting everyone. Their study found that people who use their phones to store, share and access personal memoriessuffer most. When users were asked to describe how they felt about their phones, words such as “hurt”(neck pain was often reported) and “alone”predicted higher levels of nomophobia.“The findings of our study suggest that users regard smartphones as their extended selves and get attached to the devices,”said Dr. Kim Ki Joon. “People experience feelings of anxiety and unpleasantness when separated from their phones.”Meanwhile, an American study shows that smartphone separation can lead to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. So can being without your phone really give you separation anxiety? Professor Mark Griffiths, psychologist and director of the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University, says it is what is on the phone that counts-the social networking that creates Fomo (fear of missing out).“We are talking about an internet-connected device that allows people to deal with lots of aspects of their lives,”says Griffiths. “Y ou would have to surgically remove a phone from a teenager because their whole life is rooted in this device.”Griffiths thinks attachment theory, where we develop emotional dependency on the phone because it holds details of our lives, is a small part of nomophobia. For “screenagers”, it is Fomo that creates the most separation anxiety. If they can’t see what’s happening on Snapchat orInstagram, they become panic-stricken about not knowing what’s going on socially. “But they adapt very quickly if you take them on holiday and there’s no internet,”says Griffiths.29. Which of the following may Dr. Kim Ki Joon agree with?A. We waste too much time on phones.B. Phones have become part of some users.C. Addiction to phones makes memories suffer.D. Phones and blood pressure are closely linked.30. According to Giffiths, we get nomophobia because .A. we are accustomed to having a phone on usB. we need our phones to help us store informationC. we worry we may miss out what our friends are doingD. we fear without phones we will run into a lot of trouble31. Where can you probably find the above passage?A. In a research report.B. In a fashion brochure.C. In a science textbook.D. In a popular science magazine. DAre some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some degree our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in aboring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.It is easy to show that intelligence is to some degree something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligent. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth. Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.32. The writer is in favor of the view that man’s intelligence is given to him .A. at birthB. through educationC. both at birth and through educationD. through environment of one’s family33. If a child is born with high intelligence, he can .A. surely become a geniusB. still become a genius if he isn’t given good educationC. reach his intelligence limits through his own effortsD. probably reach his intelligence limits in rich and varied surroundings34. The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows .A. the importance of their intelligenceB. the role of environment on intelligenceC. the importance of their positionsD. the part that birth plays35. The best title of the passage can be .A. On IntelligenceB. On GeniusC. Dependence on EnvironmentD. Effect of Education on Intelligence第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项。

And before that, it was actually a wall----hence the name. The wall used to protect New Yorkers from attacks by Native American Indians. But eventually, the English knocked the wall down. Bankers Trust Company Building.BDo you like cholocate? It’s popular all over the world, but why? Scientists have been trying to discover its secrets. The main thing is that chocolate makes us happy. This may have something to do with the 380 known chemicals found in it. The problem is that many of these chemicals appear in other types of food too. So, it’s difficult to know why the ones i n chocolate make us feel good. But we aren’t all lost. Adam Drewnowski at the University of Michigan found that chocolate makes the human brain produce natural opiates, called opioids(鸦片). These can stop pain and make us feel good.Others think that we feel good after eating chocolate because of a chemical called anandamide. This occurs naturally in the brain and seems to give us a feeling of happiness. Normally, our levels of anandamide are very low and our body uses it quickly. But two scientists, Emmanuelle di Tomaso of Harvard University and Daniele Piomelli of the University of California believe that the anandamide in chcocolate raises levels of the chemical in our brain. And other substances in chocolate slow down the speed at which we use it. So, chocolate helps us feel happier for longer! Great! But which chocolate is the best? Well, for a start, there’s more anandamide in dark chocolate than milk chocolate. So, you need to buy some dark chocolate. Then, you should follow these five tips from connoisseur chocolate makers Ghirardelli. They say that when choosing chocolate, you need to use all five senses:1.Sight: good chocolate has a shine to it.2.Smell: rub the chocolate with your finger to release the aroma. It should have a deepchocolate smell.3.Sound: when you break a piece of chocolate it should snap crisply, creating a soundsimilar to that of a thin piece of wood being broken.4.Touch: the chocolate should melt easily in your mouth becoming a thick liquid.5.Taste: good chocolate should not taste too sweet or too bitter.58. Why does the author mention opioids in Paragraph 2?A. To prove chocolate contains the same chemicals as opioids.B. To show the sharp contrast between chocolate and opioids.C. To suggest that chocolate is as highly addictive as opioids.D. To help explain the reason why chocolate brings pleasure.59. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to _______.A. anandamideB. chocolateC. opiateD. Brain60. Which of the following best suits “perfect chocolate” according to chocolate makers?A. Milk chocolate that produces a dull sound when broken.B. Milk chocolate that has shiny appearance and bitter taste.C. Dark chocolate that is easy to melt and of moderate taste.D. Dark chocolate that gives off a sweet and deep fragrance.CLandscapes are not only the setting for history; they are also a major ssource of our sense of history and identity. Read them right, and historical landscapes can be more informative than any other kind of source. This is even more the case with sacred landscapes, which were reflection of our ancestors’ beliefs about their relation to the cosmos and can still today seem to hold a spiritual influence.Over the years, I’ve had the good fortune to have spent time in many historical landscapes, hoping to picture something of the spirits of the people who shaped them over the centuries. I still remember years ago walking along the Inca sacred lines around Cuso, Peru. In this ancient landscape, old sites that once belonged to Incan royals had become torn Spanish mansions. Or many years ago, before the Gulf Wars, I took a journey through south Iraq, the heart land of civilization, where the desert is still crossed by dried-up riverbeds of the Euphrates and canals that once sustained the world’s first cities.Britain also has its own magical ancient landscapes. From the Mesolithic to the Bronze andIron Ages, rich layers of the past are still present in the landscape surrounding Stonehenge, even as traffic rushes down the A303. It is the A303 that is the problem. As the main road to the south west from the home counties, the road runs right past Stonehenge. One of humanity’s most famous monuments, Stonehenge is an archaeological landscape without parallel in Europe, and perhaps the world. The first circle at Stonehenge was made 5,000 years ago, and the great stone circle itself in a round 2,500 BC ----the age of the pyramids! And the mysteries of this amazing monument and the complex prehistoric societies that produced it are by no means exhausted, as new discoveries continue to show. All the more worrying to me then, this unique landscape is currently at the centre of a projected plan by Highways England, which aims to relieve congestion on the A303 by creating a four-lane road with a 1.8-mile tunnel, and an expressway interchange 1.5 miles to the west. While the National Trust and English Heritage have offered qualified support for the plan, UNESCO has expressed its opposition. Meanwhile, the Stonehenge Alliance, a group of archaeologists and environmental campaigners, says the plan is based on inadequate and obsolete information. In the end, the argument is about the totality of an ancient landscape, and that includes the ancient astronomical alignment that was purposefully chosen by our ancestors, and that will, in my view, be werecked by the xpressway interchange. Time perhaps for a rethink in the name of future generations?61. What can historical landscapes offer us?A. Details of ancient lifestyle.B. Sacred writingsC. Rich historical informationD. Breathtaking sights.62. What did the author want to explore when touring historical landscapes?A. Different archcitecture.B. His sense of belonging.C. The rise of ancient citiesD. The spirits of ancestors.63. Which of the following is True about Stonehenge?A. The first stone circle has a longer history than the pyramids.B. New discoveries have solved the mysteries of the monument.C. The ancient monument must have been the heart land of civilizaiton.D. The landscape surrounding Stonehenge has rich layers of the present.64. What is the author’s attitude towards the projected plan by Highways England?A. He is for it because it will benefit the future generations.B. He keeps cool but believes a better solution could be adopted.C. It should be stopped because it will destroy the totality of the monument.D. It is rather practical especially with qualified support from the government.D.The news one day reached Gabriel that Bathsheba had left the neighborhood. Her abrupt departure is more emphatic than her verbal refusal of his offer. It may have been observed that there is no regular path for getting out of love as there is for getting in. All that Gabriel learnt of Bathsheba’s movements was done indirectly. It appeared that she had gone to a place called Weatherbury, which, whether as a visitor or permanently, he could not discover.Gabriel had two dogs. George, the elder, had originally belonged to a shepherd (牧羊人) of inferior morals and dreadful temper. Long experience had so precisely taught the animal the difference between different orders. Though old, he was clever and trustworthy still. The youngdog, Ge orge’s son, might possibly have been the image of his mother, for there was not much resemblance between him and George. He was learning the sheep-keeping business. So earnest and yet so wrongheaded was this young dog that if sent behind he did it so thoroughly that he would have chased them across the whole country with the greatest pleasure if not called off.One night, when Gabriel had returned to his house, he called as usual to the dogs, previously shutting them up in the outhouse till next morning. Only one responded----old George; the other could not be found. ①Gabriel then concluded that the young one had not finished his meal, and he went indoors to the luxxury of a bed.It was a still and wet night. Just before dawn he was woken by the abnormal reverberation of familiar music. To the shepherd, the note of the sheep-bell is beating with unusual violence and rapidity. The experienced ear of Gabriel knew the sound was caused by the running of the flock with great speed. ②He jumped out of bed and ascended the hill. These two hundred ewes( female sheep) seemed to have absolutely vanished from the hill. Gabriel called at the top of his voice:‘Ovey, ovey, ovey!’He called again: the valleys and furthest hills resounded but no sheep. He passed through the trees and along the ridge of the hill. ③He advanced: at one point the rails were broken through, and there he saw the footprints of his ewes. The dog came up, licked his hand, and made signs implying that he expected some great reward. Gabriel looked over the side of the mountain. The ewes lay dead----a pile of two hundred dead bodies. As far as could be learnt, it appeared that the poor young dog, still under the impression that since he was kept for funning after sheep, the more he ran after them the better, had at the end of his meal off the dead lamb, which may have given him additional energy and spirits, collected all the ewes into a corner and driven the timid creatures through the hedge, breaking down a portion of the rotten railing. ④Gabriel was an intensely humane man; his first feeling now was one of pity for the untimely fate of these gentle ewes and their unborn lambs. It was a sxecond to remember another stage of the matter. All the savings had been gone at a blow; his hopes of being an independent farmer were laid low. Gabriel’s energies, patience, and industry had been so severely taxed during the years of his life, to reach his present stage of progress, that no more seemed to be left in him. He leant down upon a rail, covered his face with his hands and uttered in thankfulness: “Thank God I am not married: what would she have done in the poverty now coming upon me!”Gabriel found that the value of remaining lambs, plant, and implements which were really his own would be about sufficient to pay his debts, leaving himself a free man with the clothes he stood up in, and nothing more. Two months later, Gabriel was discovered at the hiring fair in Casterbridge. Though he was not hired, he earned a few pennies at the hiring fair and learned that another fair would be held at Shottsford, 10 miles beyong Weatherbury.65. How did Gabriel feel after Bathsheba’s departure?A. He was consumed with anger.B. He quickly adapted and moved on .C. He decided to stick to his first love.D. He was at a loss to grasp the reasons.66. What can we learn about the young dog?A. He was more than capable of doing a shepherd dog’s duty.B. He was slow in responding to Gabriel’s different orders.C. He bore a striking resemblance to the old dog George.D. He belonged to those of terrible temper and behavior.67. Where should the sentence “ On the extreme summit, he saw the younger dog standing against the sky----dark and motionless.” Be put in the passage?A.①B. ②C. ③D. ④68. Two hundred ewes died mainly due to ______.A. Gabriel’s carelessness.B. the absence of old GeorgeC. the young dog’s wrong impressionD. the unpleasant weather conditions69. Why did Gabriel utter such words in thankfulness after such a blow to him?A. He eas greatly relieved to know that no villager got hurt in the disaster.B. He felt lucky that he oculd pay off his debts with the remaining things on the farm.C. He was convinced that with patience and industry such a situation would improve.D. He had such a considerate and sympathetic nature that he didn’t want ot bother others.70. What might happen in the following paragraphs?A. Gabriel decided to see Bathsheba on his way to Shottsford.B. Gabriel found a good job in Casterbridge and succeeded again.C. The young dog was abandoned for his failure ot perform his duty.D. Good neighbors gave Gabriel a hand and restored the rotten railing.第四部分任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

To thosewho have to squeeze onto the number 25 bus in London, or the A train in NewYork, the change might not be noticeable. But public transport is becoming lessbusy in those places, and passenger numbers are flat or falling in almosteveryAmerican city. That is despite healthy growth in urban populations andemployment.Although transport agencies blame theirunpopularity on things like road works and broken signals, it seems more likelythat they are being outcompeted. App-based taxi services like Uber and Lyft aremore comfortable and convenient than trains or buses. Cycling is nicer than itwas, and rental bikes are more widely available. Cars are cheap to buy, thanksto cut-rate loans, and ever cheaper to run. Online shopping, home working andoffice-sharing mean more people can avoid travelling altogether. The competition is only likely to grow. More than onelaboratory is developing new transport technologies and applications. SiliconValley invented Uber and, more recently, apps that let people rent electricscootersand then abandon them on the pavement. China created sharing-bicycles andbattery-powered “e-bikes”, both of which are spreading.Transport agencies should accept the upstarts, and copythem. Cities tend either to ignore app-based services or to try to push themoff the streets. That is understandable, given the rules-are-for-losersattitude of firms like Uber. But it is an error. It is doubtful that most people make hard distinctionsbetween public and private transport. They just want to get somewhere, andthere is a cost in time, money and comfort. An ideal system would let them moveacross a city for a single payment, transferring from trains to taxis tobicycles as needed. Buildinga platform to allow that is hard, and requiresmuch sweet-talking of traditional networks as well as technology firms. It isprobably the secret to keeping cities moving.(1)What is the change in public transport in big cities?A . It is becoming busier.B . It is getting less popular.C . There are fewer traffic delays.D . There is more new transport.(2)In the author’s opinion, the reason for the decline of public transport is that ______.A . there are road works and broken signalsB . people are becoming healthier and employedC . cars and bikes are more and more availableD . transport agencies are seemingly less competitive(3)How does the author develop his idea in Paragraph 3?A . By giving examplesB . By providing research resultsC . By stating argumentsD . By comparing different approaches(4)According to the text, the key to keeping cities moving is ____________.A . to develop an ideal system that satisfies everyoneB . to build a platform that appeals to transport agenciesC . to provide people with more means of transportationD . to cater for both traditional networks and technology firms4. 阅读理解Why do some people live to be older than others? You knowthe standard explanations: keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regularexercise, etc. But what effect does your personality have on your longevity(长寿)? Do some kinds of personalities leadto longer lives? A new study in the Journal of theAmerican Geriatrics Societylooked at this question by examining the personality characteristics of 246children of people who had lived to be at least 100.The study shows that those living the longest are moreoutgoing, more active and less neurotic than other people. Long-living womenare also more likely to be sympathetic and cooperative than women with a normallife span. These findings are in agreement with what you would expect from theevolutionary theory: those who like to make friends and help others can gatherenough resources to make it through tough times. Interestingly, however, othercharacteristics that you might consider advantageous had no impact on whetherstudy participants were likely to live longer. Those who were more self-disciplined,for instance, were no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open tonew ideas had no relationship to long life, which might explain all thosebad-tempered old people who are fixed in their ways.Whether you can successfully change your personality as anadult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new papersuggests that if you want long life, you should strive to be as outgoing aspossible.Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mother’spersonality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly28,000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets.Patterns of childhood eating can be hard to break when we’re adults, which maymean that kids of depressed moms end up dying younger.Personality isn’tdestiny, and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But bothstudies show that long life isn’t just a matter of your physical health but ofyour mental health.(1)The aim of the study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society is____.A . to investigate the role of exercise in living a long lifeB . to find out if one’s lifestyle has any effect on their healthC . to see whether people’s personality affects their life spanD . to examine all the factors contributing to longevity(2)What does the author imply about outgoing and sympathetic people?A . They are more likely to get over hardship.B . They are better at negotiating an agreement.C . They generally appear more resourceful.D . They have a good understanding of evolution.(3)What finding of the study might prove somewhat out of our expectation?A . Personality characteristics that prove advantageous actually vary with times.B . Easy-going people can also live a relatively long life.C . Readiness to accept new ideas helps one enjoy longevity.D . Such personality characteristics as self-discipline have no effect on longevity.(4)What can we learn from the findings of the two new studies?A . Anxiety and depression more often than not cut s hort one’s life span.B . Health is in large part related to one’s lifestyle.C . Personality plays a decisive role in how healthy one is.D . Longevity results from a combination ofmental and physical health.二、任务型阅读5. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Pop art emerged from the foundation of abstract art in the 1950s, first gaining recognition in Great Britain, then establishing itself in the United States in the 1960s.In the 1930s and 1940s, abstract art was greatly popular, but people began to hate this art form. Most abstract art produced in this era could be found in art galleries or the homes of the elite(名流), not in the homes of everyday people. Pop art sprung onto the scene as the people's art. Some art critics say pop art is a rebellion against abstract art; others say it is an extension of abstract art. You can see elements of abstract art in many pop art prints, especially those that consist of a collage(拼贴画)of images. However, some pop art pieces have nothing to do with abstract art, looking more like a photo of a popular consumer item, which impressed people deeply.Richard Hamilton and Eduardo Paolozzi were two of the first contemporary pop art pioneers recognised in Great Britain. They were a part of the Independent Group, an organised group of British artists who wanted to challenge ruling modernist approaches to culture. They recognised the value of modern advertising and comic book images. They used these popular images in art as a social commentary, often building irony and humour into their artworks, thus creating a new form of art. These pieces were mass-produced and sold at affordable prices. When pop art took off in the United States, it expanded to include a celebration of kitsch and the common images found in movies and television. Andy Wharhol is perhaps the most famous American pop art artist, known for his prints of the actress Marilyn Monroe, the singer Elvis Presley and of Campbell's soup cans. Andy Wharhol was inspired by images from advertisements and common consumer items. He also made a series of paintings which showed images of car accidents.1. Why did people dislike abstract art?A. My wife and I celebrated our 40thwedding anniversary that year. It was a lovely event hosted by our sons for us. My wonderful friends from the past surprised us with gifts and congratulations. Our gift to each other was a driving trip out west. We drove fromOntariointoAlberta, then southward intoGlacierNational ParkinMontana, and continued toYellowstoneNational Park.It was a cold spring day, and theBeartooth Highwayhad opened for the season just days before. Alongside the road, there was still a great amount of snow there. The scenery was so impressive that we made lots of stops to record memories with my camera. At the highest point of the highway, I stopped at a lookout to catch the amazing views, with my wife in the centre of my camera lens. There were not many cars on the road. Sometimes, cars with energetic young tourists passed by. And then we heard a motorcycle in the distance. The driver of the motorcycle, who wore dirty clothes, parked behind our cars. As he approached us, his only words were, “Give me your camera and get over there with your wife.” I must admit I felt nervous that we might be robbed where we just created some beautiful memories. Surprisingly, he just took a picture of us, handed back my camera and rode off before we could express our gratitude. The photo he took is one of the most valuable and prized of our trip.I learned my lesson somewhere I least expected it. We should never judge a man by his appearance. If the motorcycle driver reads this story and remembers the situation, we would like to say “Thank you” to him.4. According to the passage, what do we know about the trip?A. Studies have shown, however, that a positive attitude towards schoolwork and the support and encouragement from their parents can help at-risk youngsters to overcome the economic barriersand lack of resources they face. Most of the evidence about the effects of parental involvement (参与)comes from research on mothers. Little is known, however, about how teenagers experience their fathers’ warmth and the beliefs and behavior that are most affected by it.This new study is part of a large one focusing on low-income families conducted in four middle schools in the southwestern United States. Researchers asked 183 sixth-graders about how optimistic and motivated they were about their school work, and how they experienced their fathers' warmth. The students' maths and language arts grades were also gained. The research team took into account the influence that mothers have on their children’s well-being in their analyses.Their findings show how fathers can support their teenagers in ways that result in greater optimism and higher achievement at school. “Low-income fathers affect their teenagers’ beliefs about themselves and their future, and these beliefs influence their achievement by increasing their determination to complete school tasks, “says Dr, Marie-Anne.These positive effects extend to both sons and daughters, although in different ways. Experiencing their fathers’ warmth first influences daughters’sense of optimism, and thenspills overinto their feeling more determined and certain about their academic abilities. This in turn leads to better maths grades. There is a more direct link between their fathers, love and boys' belief in their ability to succeed in academy.8. What is more likely to happen to teenagers from low-income families?A. They will be more determined to struggle.B. They will have fewer happy things to share.C. They will fail in their studies and quit school.D. They will receive less love from their parents.9. How is the new research different from the previous ones?A. It only researches families in the north of America.B. It only studies low-education families in the world.C. It combines questionnaire data and students, grades.D. It mainly focuses on the effects of fathers' involvement.10. What can we know about fathers' warmth?A. It is less effective than that of mothers.B. It affects girls and boys in different ways.C. It mainly applies to girls rather than boys.D. It has a more direct effect on girls thanon boys.11. Which of the following best explains "spills over" underlined in the last paragraph?A. Spreads.B. These schools are primarily located in the Northeastern part of the country. There are eight total colleges that are considered to be Ivy League. These schools are Brown, Harvard, Cornell, Princeton, Dartmouth, Yale, and Columbia universities and the University of Pennsylvania. Of all institutions of higher learning, these elite schools are considered to be the most outstanding and the most sought-after in terms of acceptance and graduation. The term “Ivy League” came about in 1954 when the NCAA athletic conference for Division I was formed. At the time, the elitism of these schools was really due to their prestige in the realm of sports like basketball. Although the term “Ivy League” was not created until the 1950s, many of these schools were in existence as far back as 1636, when John Harvard became the first benefactor of Harvard University.Although this group of elite schools is considered to be part of one big league of the elite, there have been plenty of internal rivalries over the years. The sports that these colleges play were so popular that some teams began playing games in New York City so spectators could come from far away and watch the games. The popularity of both the athletes who played and the college team rivalries brought in a good deal of attention tothe schools as well as revenue from ticket sales. There have also been academic rivalries between schools. Mostly, these rivalries are a matter of opinion in terms of which school has the most honor graduates, which schools offer the most prestigious scholarships, and what famous graduates have come from each school. Each Ivy League college has its own unique accomplishments that make it important. All carry a certain reputation with them, and each school has programs that excel primarily in the medical and law fields, making them some of the most sought-after schools in the world. Their admission process is very selective, which helps the schools ensure that they only accept the best and brightest. Many famous people have graduated from Ivy League schools, including recent presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. This prestige leads many to believe that these colleges are only for the wealthy and elite. Often, companies look for Ivy League graduates as potential employees, usually preferred by law firms, medical facilities, and large corporations. It has long beencovetedto have earned a degree from an Ivy League school. Today, the Ivy League schools are still excellent in both academia and in sports, and they have left a legacy of higher education with an exceptional track record and reputation to go along with them.12.
