AI’ve often wondered if I might do more good as a travel agent rather than as a psychologist. It seems that I have been more dramatically affected by certain kinds of travel experiences than I ever have.My trip to Iceland is a fine example of that. The plan was to spend two days in a remote mountain hut in Iceland. I was working on a photographic book about winter in Iceland and needed to capture images of this amazing region of high mountain peaks, smoky volcanoes, and lakes with floating icebergs.The moment after we arrived, the weather turned extreme making visibility impossible. It snowed so much and the wind blew so hard that we cou ldn’t leave the tiny hut. To stay warm, we walked around in circles much of the day inside the tiny hut. We tried to call for help but the radio did not work. Day after day, we watched our supplies of food and fuel grow dangerously short. We got acute cabin fever (幽居病) and started going for walks and ski expeditions outside. Even when the weather finally broke, nobody came to get us even though it was three days beyond our scheduled pickup. By the time the rescue team came to pull us out, we had all given up hope.From then on, the world looks different to me, as does my life. It would have taken me years of psychotherapy to get to the same point.Almost everyone has a story to tell, and interestingly, most of these experiences were not altogether pleasant at the time. In fact, it appears that the most constructive life-changing journeys were those that involved some sorts of awful and uncomfortable events that forced the person to develop new resources, increase confidence, and solve problems in new ways.1. The writer went to Iceland to ______.A. enjoy the natural beautiful floating icebergsB. take photos about the region for a bookC. collect materials for psychological researchD. challenge the high mountains there2. During the trip in Iceland, those travelers faced difficulties EXCEPT that ______.A. they got lost in the mountainB. they were short of food and fuelC. they couldn’t see the surroundings clearlyD. they failed to get in touch with the rescue team3. From Paragraph 3, we learn that the travelers ______.A. were in despair before they were rescuedB. stayed in the hut for three days altogetherC. got sick because of going for ski outsideD. got rescued immediately the weather turned fine4. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. The writer is a travel agent who loves difficult challenges.B. In Iceland the weather is always extreme and it snows a lot.C. The travellers were so depressed that they needed psychotherapy.D. Awful journeys may become life-changing events that inspire people.BWell, parents, surprise! Lots of us are using Twitter and Facebook to thumb rides, and not just to school. It’s awkward to be refused when you call a friend and ask for a ride. But with Twitter, you just look for other people heading the same way.It may sound risky, so many teens stay within their own social circles to find rides, and don’t branch out beyond friends when asking on Twitter just like me, but to some young people, especially those taking longer trips, stranger danger is less of a concern.“I think the digital connection of young people is really key, because younger generations grew up sharing things on line, sharing files, photos, music, etc, so they’ve been very used to sharing,” said Juliet Schor, a sociology professor at Boston College.The sharing economy got big during the recession (经济衰退), allowing people to access more goods, services using technology and even to share costs. And that technology, for me, is what the car was for my mom, a gateway to more freedom, like what my friend Earl says, “The symbol of freedom isn’t the car any more because there’s technology out there connecting you to a car.”According to the researchers at the University of Michigan, 30 years ago, eight in ten American 18-year-olds had a driver’s license compared to six in ten today. So it’s not that surprising that on my 16th birthday I wasn’t rushing to get a license but an iPhone.“Driving, for young people, does mean they have to disconnect from their technology, and that’s a negative. So if they could sit i n the passage side and still be connected, that’s going to be a plus.” Schor continued. www.To me, another plus is that ridesharing represents something, something much bigger than trying to save money. I see it as evidence that people still depend on each other. My generation shares their cars and apartments the way neighbors used to share cups of sugar. For the system to work, some of us still need our own cars. But until I get my own version of the silver Super Beetle, you can find me on Twitter.5. The American teens like the author, prefer to possess an iPhone as a birthday gift because_______.A. it is most fashionable and coolB. they are bored with driving carsC. they are fond of being connectedD. it is much cheaper than a car6. We can learn from the text that _______.A. Twitter is a website for teens to make friends and achieve goalsB. ridesharing can be seen as a sign that people still count on each otherC. driving cars for teens means a plus and connecting with technologyD. having a car and cost-sharing symbolize more freedom for the author’s mother7. Professor Juliet would agree that _______.A. young people will sit waiting to be contacted by reading a passageB. sharing economy is bound to be responsible for the recessionC. young people tend to share a car with strangers by means of TwitterD. being connected via technology comes first for young people8. The best title for the passage is probably _______.A. Twitter, an Awesome WebsiteB. Cars or iPhoneC. Teens Use Twitter to Thumb RidesD. Cool Teens on the GoCImagine having an idea, drawing it on paper, bringing it to a store and seeing it turned into a physical object.This is now possible with the help of 3D printers.Such machines were once used just by universities and big companies.But now, stores with 3D printing services are appearing around the United States.Bryan Jaycox and his wife opened The Build Shop LLC in Los Angeles two years ago.The store is filled with tools like a laser cutter, an industrial sewing machine and 3D printers.Bryan Jaycox requires $ 15 an hour to print an object.He also charges a fee depending on the size of the object and up to $ 50 an hour for design and labor services.The Jaycoxs also offer 3D printing classes for anyone who is interested.One of the students in a recent class was Ki Chong Tran.He plans to open a 3D printing business in Cambodia."The demand has been amazing.It's been much more than I would have imagined," said Ki Chong Tran."I think 3D printing is going to be huge. It's going to make a huge impact on society as a whole," he added.Mr Jaycox predicts that within five years, 3D printing technology could becomemore consumer friendly.But Ki Chong Tran says even current technology can make a difference in a developing country like Cambodia."With 3D printing you can give them tools, and you put it in their hands so they are responsible more for their own development.They learn skills beyond just learning English and becoming a tour guide or something like that or working at a bank.You can actually create things that give value to the world," said Ki Chong Tran.He says it's not just Cambodia but anywhere where there is a 3D printer, it can turn a good idea into reality.9.We learn from Paragraph l that 3D printing_________.A. is now available to ordinary peopleB.first appeared in the United StatesC.can turn your every dream into realityD.is now only used by universities10.Bryan Jaycox opened The Build Shop LLC to__________.A.sell 3D printers and different kinds of toolsB.produce all types of printing machinesC.offer 3D printing classes and servicesD.design different types of 3D printers11.In Mr Jaycox's opinion, within five years 3D printing will_________.A.make it easier to do businessB.be accessible to all consumersC.change the way of social contactD.bring about more profits to the sellers12.How will 3D printing technology benefit developing countries according to the text?A.It helps the people work efficiently at a bank.B.It will promote the learning of EnglishC.It will accelerate the development of tourism.D.It offers them a new way of development.DAs thousands of communities in the USA — especially in the South — became booming gateways for immigrant families from Central and South America during the 1990s and the early years of the new century, public schools struggled with the unfamiliar task of serving the large numbers of English learners arriving in their classrooms.Education programs needed to be built from scratch. “We had no teaching resources suitable for English learners here before. We had to develop them all ourselves,” a Texas principal said. Throughout the country, districts had to train their own teachers to teach English to non-native speakers or recruit (招聘)teachers from elsewhere. School staff members had to figure out how to communicate with parents who spoke no English.But even as immigration has slowed or stopped in many places, and instructional programs for English-learners have matured, serving immigrant families and their children remains a work in progress in many public schools, especially those in communities that are skeptical, or sometimes unwelcoming, to the newcomers. One of the biggest challenges educators face, is communicating eff ectively with parents who don’t speak English — an issue that, in part, has contributed to recent complaints of discrimination by Latino students in some cities.“The parents’ role is very important for the success of these students, but it's also one of the most difficult things we’ve had to tackle(处理),” said Jim D. Rollins, the president of the Springdale school district, where the 19,000-student school system has gone from having no English-learners 15 years ago to more than 7,500 now. “You have to m ake it a priority and work on it, work on it, and work on it.”Aside from the practical challenges, such as finding bilingual (会说两种语言的) staff members, guiding districts through such dramatic changes requires school leaders to bridge difficult political and cultural divides. For school leaders in the South, especially in the last few years, this difficult job has been made harder still by the negative attitudes of some locals towards immigrants.13. According to the passage, what is the problem that public schools are facing?A. Handling more cases from the immigrant Mexican communities.B. Offering services to immigrant families in the southern states.C. Offering enough communicative lessons to immigrant parents.D. Providing education for non-native English learners.14. The underlined part “built from scratch” (in Paragraph 2) probably means “________”.A. completely newB. painful to makeC. based on past experienceD. constructed gradually15. What do we know about the immigrant parents?A. Many of them cannot speak English.B. Most of them think education is not important.C. Some of them feel skeptical about the local community.D. Few of them have attended American schools.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

When Frankie Moran first saw his son, he could not imagine ever sharing his love of music with the boy.But Cole was not deaf. He quickly showed an interest in music. Mr. Moran is a singer and songwriter. He says his son liked to be nearby when he was making music at home.When he was just one year old, Cole started playing notes(音符) of simple songs on a toy piano. "That is about the same time we discovered he had perfect sense of pitch(音高). Because when he would miss a note and hit the wrong notes in a song like ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,' he would go back and find that note. So that's how we realized he knew what he was hearing."Cole Moran is now 12 years old. Cole plays music every day. He records his performances and listens back to the sound.Cole's choice of instrument since he was four has been the harmonica(口琴), which he often plays with his dad. Last year, the father and son won second place at a Fiddler's Convention in their hometown.The 12-year-old released his first CD recently. His mother, Jenny Moran, was excited. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Never Judge a Person by His Appearance.B. Every Man Has His Faults (缺点)C. Failure Is the Mother of SuccessD. Blind Boy Defines (明确) His Life With MusicCGreen is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants.Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it describes something that is not yet ripe(成熟的) or finished.For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a situation. In the 15th century, a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns(角) had not yet developed. A century or so later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in battle. By the 18th century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today --- a person who is new in a job.About 100 years ago, greenhorn was a popular expression in the American west. Old-timers used it to describe a man who had just arrived from one of the big cities back east. The greenhorn lacked the skills he would need to live in the west.Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression comes from the early 1900s. A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her garden continues to grow long after your plants have died.Green is also the color used to describe the powerful emotion, jealousy(嫉妒). The green-eyed monster is not a frightening creature from outer space. It is an expression used about four hundred years ago by British writer William Shakespeare in his play "Othello."It describes the unpleasant feeling that a person has when someone has something that he wants. A young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if his girlfriend begins going outwith someone else. Or, that green-eyed monster may affect your friend if you get a pay raise and she does not.In most places in the world, a green light is a signal to move ahead. A green light on a traffic signal means your car can continue on. In everyday speech, a green light means approval to continue with a project.8. If a person was a greenhorn, he might ___________.A. be good at growing plantsB. get along well with othersC. be a soldier in the 16th centuryD. have no experience in doing something9. When you have trouble in growing flowers, you can ask for help from ___________.A. a green thumbB. a green lightC. a greenhornD. a green-eyed monster10. If a girl refuses your invitation to a dance party but accepting another gentleman’s, you may___________.A. need to buy a green lightB. have to get a green thumbC. show them your greenhornD. be affected by the green-eyed monster11.

At least, that’s how many people saw it. It was a highly desirable government position that included a guaranteed retirement and a lifetime medical plan. It was also nearly impossible to get fired.But I was miserable every day. As soon as I clocked into work, all my energy—and in turn, all my desire for life—faded away.Instead, I thought about my side business. For a few years, I’d been running an auto shop in my home garage. I specialized in repairing and modifying classic cars. At one point, I hung up a print (照片) of my favorite automotive shop as a source of inspiration. I knew the owner’s story well: He has a tight work schedule, but his work ethic, artistry, and authenticity never falter(衰退).In 2019, one of my clients offered me an actual industrial space to run my shop. I was nervous to say yes. Could I really expand my business and keep my government job? Was it wise to give up something with so much security?Then it dawned on me: The “dream job” had a guaranteed retirement plan for people who work there for 30 years—but after 30 year, would elderly me look back and regret not seizing the opportunity to do things on my own terms? I had my answer.In 2020, I left the dream job to run my business full time. In 2021, I somehow kept the business afloat, and we moved into a shop that’s double the size. That’s when I realized that my print was still hanging up back at my “first” garage. I thought about how much that print meant to me back then, and how it deserved a place of prominence(杰出) at my new location.It is now proudly displayed in my humble shop, along with a banner given to me by the owner of the store that I like. It serves as a reminder to hold myself to the same ethos as he—tireless work ethic, ever-evolving artistry, and genuine authenticity. Frankly, this path hasnot been easy. Since starting my own business, never in my life have I been so tired, frustrated, or anxious. But I live on my own terms and love every second of life.4.How did the author probably feel about his “dream job”?A.Fairly painful.B.Rather busy.C.A bit regretful.D.Very enjoyable.5.Why did the author mention his favorite automotive shop owner in Paragraph 3?A.He helped the author expand his shop.B.He encouraged the author to work hard.C.He always worked according to his schedule.D.He was an inspiration for the author to own a shop.6.What did the author mean by his answer?A.He would refuse to accept the owner’s offer.B.He would give up his dream job in the end.C.He would value the print offered by the owner.D.He would keep a strong desire for his dream job.7.What message does the author seem to convey in the text?A.All hard work will pay off.B.We should respect our heart.C.There is no shortcut to success.D.Opportunity is for the prepared.TerraCycle is a company that has recycled and upcycled (升级改造) just about any garbage it can get its hands on. They said they hate the “involution (内卷),” joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get trapped in an endless competition against peers.“Instead of always following the ‘virtues’ of struggle, endure and sacrifice to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis (宣泄) and adjustment,” said a scholar. “It is no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures fromchild-raising to paying the mortgage (按揭) today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.”Interestingly, the majority of millennials and Gen Zs reached by the Global Times, who claim to be big fans of the lying down philosophy, acknowledged that they only accept a temporary lying down as a short rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese youth have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down is not entirely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel guilty about their constant loss of morale (士气) far beyond their reach.“Young people on campus have both aspirations and confusion about their future, but most of us have rejected setting ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges,”a postgraduate student told the Global Times. “It’s no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’ and face the reality sooner or later.”12.What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 mean?A.Warned.B.Criticized.C.Touched.D.Amused.13.What might have caused the “lying down” lifestyle among the young? A.Improvements in living conditions.B.Growing pressure from family and social life.C.Increasing material possessions from families.D.Temporary adjustment to failure in competitions.14.What’s the scholar’s attitude toward the “lying down” group?A.Understanding.B.Intolerant.C.Supportive.D.Unclear.15.What can be inferred about the young generation from the text?A.They never really drop their responsibilities.B.They really enjoy the “lying down” lifestyle.C.They find their dreams far beyond their reach.D.They would rather escape than take challenges.二、七选五When you have got a lot of stuff,decluttering(整理)your home can be really necessary.Decluttering is just about putting new systems into place in your life.___16___ ,you realize how great you feel about it,and you want to keep going.Getting rid of things gives you time to look after yourself.___17___ ,or looking for the potato peeler—because everything has a home and you know exactly where it is—you’re free to spend that time on yourself and your family. D.Experimental procedures.It all began in Everett, Washington, where my project team was in the process of conducting one of our business systems. So tough was the project that we often stayed up completing the tasks assigned. All of us were worn out. One night, as I walked through the parking lot with one of my employees. I found a cent and picked it up. Glancing at my exhausted employee. I suddenly had an idea to delight him. Jokingly, I presented the cent to the employee and said, "This is an informal award for your efforts." He put the cent in his pocket. "Thank you," he said, a wave of joy sweeping across his face.About six months later, I was walking with the same employee, this time in Los Alamitos, California, when I again found a cent and gave it to him with the same words.Later, I got into his office and there, taped on a piece of paper, were the two cents, which made me surprised. He said he was displaying them as his recognition for a job well done.Other employees noticed the cents proudly displayed and began asking why they hadn't received any. They were also longing for the "reward". It was then that I started handing out cents, explaining that they were for recognition, not for reward. Soon, so many people wanted them that I designed a cent holder. The front features a place for a cent and beside it the phrase, "Your work is recognized!" The back has room for 30 more cents and the phrase, "Your achievements count!"One time, I spotted an employee, Mia, doing something right and wanted to recognize her, but I didn't have a cent, so I gave her a quarter. Later the same day she stopped by and returned 24 cents.That's how the "One Cent Award" was born. It's become a significant source of recognition in our organization.4. Why did the author give a cent to the employee initially?A.To amuse him. B.To surprise him. C.To reward him. D.To praise him. 5. What inspired the author to hand out cents?A.The design of a cent holder. B.The shared beliefs in his team.C.The eagerness of fellow employees. D.The desire for better achievements.6. Why did Mia return the author 24 cents?A.She was advised to do so. B.One cent stood for recognition.C.The author was mean with money. D.It is the company's strict regulation.7. Which can best describe the employees receiving one cent?A.Greedy. B.Talented. C.Informed. D.Motivated.Medical artificial intelligence (AI) can perform with expert-level accuracy and deliver cost-effective care. IBM’s Watson diagnoses (诊断) heart disease better than cardiologists (心脏病专家) do. Chatbots give better medical advice to patients in place of nurses. Some forecast that medical AI will enter 90% of hospitals and replace as much as 80% of what doctors currently do. Yet, as our recent research suggests, patients show a strong resistance to medical AI.The reason, we found, is not the belief that AI provides lower care. Nor is it that patients think that AI is more costly or less informative. Rather, resistance to medical AI seems to come from a belief that AI does not take into account one’s specific circumstances. People view themselves as unique. By contrast, they think medical care delivered by AI providers is suited to treat an average patient but unsuitable to account for the unique circumstances that apply to an individual. No wonder that medical AI providers are given a cold welcome.There are a number of steps that care providers can take to overcome patients’ resistance to medical AI. For example, if an AI provider is capable of tailoring its recommendation for whether to have a surgery to each patient’s unique characteristics and medical history, patients would be likely to follow the treatment recommendations of the AI provider. In addition, health care providers could also deliver individualized health care by explaining how the algorithms (算法) work and sharing patients’ reviews with the media. Having a physician confirm the recommendation of an AI provider should make people more willing to accept AI-based care. People are comfortable using medical AI if a physician remains in charge of the ultimate decision.AI-based health care technologies are being developed and employed at an impressive rate, providing better medical services for the patients. But harnessing the full potential of them will require that we first overcome patients’ doubt of having an algorithm, rather than a person making decisions about their care.8. What made people resist the medical AI?A.A sufferer’s temper ignored by medical AI.B.People’s lasting trust in a human doctor’s ability.C.The concern about its personalization in treatment.D.The accuracy of the information from medical AI.9. What can be a solution to patients’ resistance according to the author?A.Treating sufferers as average patients.B.Providing a more specific treatment.C.Getting the algorithms prioritized in time.D.Keeping away from the influence of a physician.10. Which word can replace the underlined word “harnessing” in the last par agraph?A.Weakening. B.Storing. C.Destroying. D.Using.11. What is the suitable title for the text?A.Advantages of Medical AIB.Potential Application of AIC.How AI Replaces Nurses in HealthcareD.The Challenge That Medical AI FacesIs forgiveness against our human nature? To answer our question, we need to ask a further question: What is the essence of our humanity? For the sake of simplicity, people consider two distinctly different views of humanity.The first view involves dominance and power. In an early paper on the psychology of forgiveness, Droll (1984) made the interesting claim that humans’ essential nature is more aggressive than forgiving allows. Those who forgive are against their basic nature, much to their harm. In his opinion, forgivers are compromising their well-being as they offer mercy to others, who might then take advantage of them.The second view involves the theme of cooperation, mutual respect, and even love as the basis of who we are as humans. Researchers find that to fully grow as human beings, we need both to receive love from and offer love to others. Without love, our connections with a wide range of individuals in our lives can fall apart. Even common sense strongly suggests that the will to power over others does not make for harmonious interactions. For example, how well has slavery worked as a mode of social harmony?From this second viewpoint of who we are as humans, forgiveness plays a key role in the biological and psychological integrity of both individuals and communities because one of the outcomes of forgiveness, shown through scientific studies, is the decreasing of hate and the restoration of harmony. Forgiveness can break the cycle of anger. At least to the extent the people from whom you are estranged (不和的) accept your love and forgiveness and are prepared to make the required adjustments. Forgiveness can heal relationships and reconnect people.As an important note, when we take a classical philosophical perspective, we see the distinction between potentiality and actuality. We are not necessarily born with the capacity to forgive, but instead with the potential to learn about it and to grow in our ability to forgive. The actuality of forgiving, in real situations, develops with practice.12. What is Droll’s idea about forgiveness?A.People should offer mercy to others.B.Aggressive people should learn to forgive.C.Forgiveness depends on the nature of humanity.D.People who forgive can have their own welfare affected.13. What does the example in Paragraph 3 illustrate?A.To fight is to grow. B.To give is to receive.C.To forgive is to abuse. D.To dominate is to harm.14. What is the writer’s attitude toward forgiveness?A.Favorable. B.Reserved. C.Objective. D.Skeptical.15. What message does the last paragraph convey?A.Forgiveness is in our nature. B.Forgiveness grows with time.C.It takes practice to forgive. D.Actuality is based on potentiality.Are you frequently depressed by the feeling that life is leaving you behind particularly when you look over social media sites and are faced with all the exciting things your friends are up to? 16 FOMO, or Fear of Missing Out refers to the perception that other people’s lives are superior to our own. It appears as a deep sense of envy, and constant exposure to it can have a weakening effect on our self-esteem(自尊).While feelings of envy and lack of confidence seem to be human nature, social media seems to have added fuel to the fire. 17 Social media, with its built-in appeal, allows us to share only the best presentations of our life, while leaving out the more boring aspects. Although this could be characterized as dishonest, it is the atmosphere social media seems to demand. So how do we avoid being trapped into our own insecurities by social media?Consider your own social media posts. 18 Well, so have others. And what they’ve left hidden is the fact that boredom, loneliness and unpleasant chores are an unavoidable part of everyone’s life, and you’re not the only one feeling left out.19 You may not be a regular at fancy parties or a climber of dizzying peaks, but you have your health, a place to live and real friends who appreciate your presence in their lives.Learn to shake it off. We are all flooded daily with photos of other people’s perfec tions, but really, what does it matter? 20 And even if you are more easily affected than others by social media envy, all you need to do is to look around you and acknowledge that you are doing pretty well after all.One summer night in a seaside cottage, a small boy was in bed, sound asleep. AA shopkeeper sent his son to learn about the secret of happiness from the wisest man in the world. The boy walked a long way, and finally came upon the beautiful castle where the wise man lived.On entering the main room of the castle, the boy was quite surprised: tradesmen coming and going, people chatting in the corners, and a small orchestra playing soft music. The wise man talked with everyone, and the boy had to wait for two hours before it was his turn.The wise man listened carefully to the boy’s explanation of why he had come, but told him that he didn’t have time just then to explain the secret of happiness. He suggested that the boy look around the palace and return in two hours.“Meanwhile, I want to ask you to do something,” said the wise man, handing the boy a teaspoon that held two drops of oil. “As you wander around, carry this spoon with you without allowing the oil to spill.”The boy began to walk up and down stairs of the palace, keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. After two hours, he returned to the wise man.“Well,” asked the wise man, “Did you see the Persian tapestries(挂毯)in the hall? Did you see the garden that took the master gardener ten years to create?” The boy was embarrassed, and replied that he had observed nothing. His only concern had been not to spill the oil.“Then go back and observe the wonders of my world,” said the wise man. The boy picked up the spoon and returned to his exploration of the palace. This time he observed all of the works of art on the ceilings and the walls. When he returned, he described in detail everything he had seen.“But where are the drops of oil?” asked the wise man. Looking down at the spoon he held, the boy saw that the oil was gone.“Well, there is only one piece of advice I can give you,” said the wise man. “The secret of happiness is to see all the wonders of the world, and ne ver to forget the drops of oil on the spoon.”21.When the boy arrived at the castle, he .A.received a warm welcome from the wise manB.had already missed his chance to talk to the wise manC.was shown around the palace by the local peopleD.didn’t expect t o see so many people around22.The wise man gave the boy two tasks in order to .A.show him how to observe the wonders in the worldB.teach him the secret of happinessC.make him learn from his mistakesD.let the boy enjoy his palace and garden23.We can inf er from the article that “the drops of the oil on the spoon” probably refer to .A.the beauty of one’s natureB.the fortune a person possessesC.the responsibilities one has to take onD.the great opportunities in life24.What would be the best title for the article?A. Lesson about HappinessB. The Secret of HappinessC. Learning about HappinessD. Searching for HappinessB“Have you ever been out on a boat and felt it lifted up by a wave? Or have you jumped in the water and felt the rush of energy as wa ves came over you?” asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group at the University of Edinburgh. “There is certainly a lot of energy in waves,” he said. Scientists are working to use that energy to make electricity. Most waves are created when winds blow ac ross the ocean. “The wind starts out by making little ripples(涟漪), but if they keep on blowing, those ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves,” Taylor said. “Waves are one of nature’s ways of picking up energy and then sending it off on a journey.” When waves come toward the shore, people can set up dams to block the water and send it through a large wheel called a turbine(涡轮机). The turbine can then power an electrical generator to produce electricity.“The resource is huge,” said Janet Swain of the World Watch Institute. “We will never run out of wave powe r.” Besides, wave energy does not create the same pollution as other energy sources, such as oil or coal. Oceans cover three quarters of the Earth’s surface—that would make wave power seem ideal for creating energy throughout the world, though there are some weak points yet to overcome.Swain said that wave power still costs too much money. She also said that its effects on sea animals are still unknown. What is more, wave power could affect fishing and boat traffic. Traditional sources of energy like oil a nd gas may someday run out. “Demand for energy to power our TVs and computers, drive our cars, and heat and cool our homes is rising rapidly throughout the world,” Swain said. In the future when you turn on a light, an ocean wave could be providing the electricity!25.The writer uses the two questions at the beginning of the passage to .A.test the readers’ knowledge about wavesB.draw the readers’ attention to the topicC.show Jamie Taylor’s importanceD.invite the readers to answer them26.The underlined phrase “picking up” is closest in meaning to .A. starting againB. speeding upC. improvingD. gathering27.We can make better use of wave energy if we .A.shorten its journey to thousands of homesB.build more small power stations on the oceansC.reduce the cost of turning it into electric powerD.quicken the steps of producing electricity28.It can be inferred that someday we might not worry about .A. our power supplyB. our boat trafficC. air pollutionD. our supply of sea fishCHow could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments -mostly for entertainment purposes -is fair and respectful?Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range. The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’natural needs. www.The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusually and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered.Captive breeding(圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild.Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.29.How would the author describe the an imals’ life in zoos?A.Dangerous. B.Unhappy. C.Natural. D.Easy.30.In the state of zoochosis, animals _________.A.remain in cages B.behave strangelyC.attack other animals D.enjoy moving around31.What does the author try to argue in the passage?A.Zoos are not worth the public support.B.Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.C.Zoos should treat animals as human beings.D.Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.32.The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by _________.A.pointing out the faults in what zoos doB.using evidence he has collected at zoosC.questioning the way animals are protectedD.discussing the advantages of natural habitatsDOUR KIDS ARE AMAZING-especially compared with everybody else’s (who seem to cry all the time).
