1.He ______(pretend) that a tiger toy was real and giving it a voice.【解析】在主语He后,pretend显然是谓语动词;giving it(the tiger)a voice的主语理应是He, 所以,and giving与谓语动词是并列关系;由此推断,谓语动词应是过去实行时,故填was pretending。
【答案】was pretending2.One day, Nick invited his friends to supper. He was cooking some delicious food in the kitchen. Suddenly, he ________ (find) that he had run out of salt.【解析】在主语he后,find显然为谓语动词;由前面句意可知,此处为一般过去时,故填found。
I was on my way to the Taiyetos Mountains. The sun was setting when my car ________(break) down near a remote village.【解析】在when后的分句中,my car是主语,其后的break应为谓语动词;由全文可知,这是叙述过去的经历,用一般过去时;再说was / were doing... when...did...

I grew into adulthood and went to college.I had to ride the bus whenever I came home.Though the bus stopped about two miles from home,Dad never met me,even in severe weather. If I grumbled,he’d say in his loudest father-voice,“That’s what your legs are for!”The walk didn’t bother me as much as the fear of walking alone along the highway and country roads.I also felt less than valued that my father didn’t seem concerned about my safety. But that feeling was canceled one spring evening. It had been a particularly difficult week at college after long hours in labs.I longed for home. When the bus reached a stop,I stepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journey home.A row of hedge (树篱) edged the driveway that climbed the hill to our house.Once I had turned off the highway to start the last lap of my journey,I always had a sense of relief to see the hedge because it meant that I was almost home.On that particular evening, the hedge had just come into view when I saw something gray moving along the top of the hedge, moving toward the house.Upon closer observation,I realized it was the top of my father’s head. Then I knew, each time I’d come home,he had stood behind the hedge, watching, until he knew I had arrived safely.I swallowed hard against the tears. He did care, after all.On later visits, that spot of gray became my watchtower.I could hardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the greenery.Upon reaching home,I would find my father sitting innocently in his chair.“So!My son,it’s you!”he’d say,his face lengthening into pretended

[典例1](2016·浙江高考,11)Scientists have advanced many theories about whyhuman beings cry tears, none of ________ has been proved.A.whom B.whichC.what D.thatB[如果学生把先行词误认为scientists,容易错选A项。
][典例2]He wrote five novels,two of________translated into English.A.it B.themC.which D.thatB[此题很容易掉进陷阱误选C项,学生误以为后面是非限制性定语从句。
若在translated前加上were,were translated就成了谓语动词,这时才可以选连词which。

I think I’ll nip into the pub and call a cab。
" so we will do something to get ourselves somewhere safe.If we have an exam coming up,we are likely to start feeling anxious. We might think,“I can’t pretend it's not happening.I’ve got to revise or I’ll totally mess up." Once again, anxiety can guide us to behave in a way that is in our best interests. However, anxiety can also imprison us。
It stops us from doing what we would like to do and living our life fully。

( A )The sharing economy has grown in recent years to include everything from apartment sharing to car sharing to community tool sharing.Since 2009,a new form of sharing economy has been emerging in neighborhoods throughout the US and around the world—Little Free Libraries. The libraries are boxes placed in neighborhoods from which residents can withdraw and deposit books.Little Free Libraries come in all shapes and sizes. Some libraries also have themes, focusing on books for children, adults,or tour guides. In 2009,Tod Bol built the first Little Free Library as a gift to his mother, who was a devoted reader. When he saw the people of his community gathering around it,exchanging conversations as well as books,he knew he wanted to take his simple idea further.“I think Little Free Libraries open the door to conversations we want to have with each other.” Bol said.Since then, his idea has become a movement, spreading from state to state and country to country.According to ,there are now 18,000 of the little structures around the world, located in each of the 50 US states and 70 countries in Europe,Africa and Asia. The Internet has helped to spread Little Free Libraries. But an Atlantic article says the little structures serve as a cure for a world of e-reader downloads. The little wooden boxes are refreshingly physical and human. For many people, the sense of discovery is Little Free Libraries’main appeal.“A girl walking home from school might pick up a graphic novel that gets her excited about reading;a man on his way to the bus stop might find a volume of poetry that changes his outlook on life,”says the Atlantic article.“Every book is a potential source of inspiration.”21.How do Little Free Libraries get their books?( )A.Citizens shared them.B.Tod Bol donated them. government provided them.D.The communities bought them.22.Why did Tod Bol want to build more Little Free Libraries?( )A.He wanted to promote his idea worldwide.B.He was inspired by the sharing economy.C.They can offer neighbors more chances to talk.D.They are a gift to please his mother.23.Little Free Libraries attract readers most in that .A.they connect strangers togetherB.they are located all over the worldC.they are in various shapes and sizesD.they may give readers a sense of discovery( B )Primary Source Holiday Shopping Night at Ten Thousand Villages Brookline.●Shop for your holiday gifts and give back to Primary Source at Ten Thousand Villages on Friday,December 4! 15% of all sales from 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.that day will be donated to Primary Source.Join us for light refreshments and enjoy beautiful handmade gifts from artisans around the world. All are welcome!Primary Source’ s Holiday Shopping NightFriday,December 43:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.Ten Thousand Villages226 Harvard Street,Brookline,Massachusetts (Coolidge Corner)Download our flyer and tell your friends!Ten Thousand Villages provides vital, fair income for the people from developing countries by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America.Learn more and preview toys, home decor, jewelry, and other gifts online.●Can’t join us on Dec.4? earth provides us with almost everything that we need to eat, sleep, work and entertain. To do all this,we use the earth’s resources.Because some of us have more buying power, they end up using more resources than they usually need.At the same time,we also create a great deal of waste and pollution. So we also need to think about how much land we use to deal with that waste. Then two things happen:first, large numbers of the world’s population get much less resources than they need to live;second, the earth is damaged. The amounts of resources we consumed are like footprints. They show whose lifestyles are a burden on the earth and whose lifestyles are not.Because a few people eat up most of the earth’s resources, the majority have to bear the consequences—like pollution. This is the ecological footprints that the earth keeps in its memory. Some years ago,a famous expert, called William Rees, developed this idea of the ecological footprints.Today, this idea has become like a magnifying glass (放大镜).It allows us to see whetherwe are living lives in a way that keeps the earth in a reasonably good shape.Once the earth goes out of shape, there is no hope for human beings.Countries like the United States and Canada have big ecological footprints.Rees calculated that the average amount of energy and materials consumed by a Canadian is what a land of 4.3 hectares can produce.India has a footprint of 0.4.This means that the energy and materials consumed by an Indian is what 0.4 hectares of land can produce. But if we look more carefully,we will find that even within India, the footprints of the city Indian are much larger than the rural Indian.28.Which of the following is the best title for this text?( )A.Footprints on the earthB.How to protect the earthC.Footprints of wild animalsD.How to reduce pollution on the earth29.Our footprints on the earth refer to .A.the cities we buildB.the cultures we createC.the marks we leave on roads behind usD.the resources we use and the waste we produce30.According to the text, rich people .A.should give more money to the poorB.are using too many resourcesC.are helping the poor to live better livesD.should live in rural areas with the poor31.We learn from the text that Rees .A.put forward the idea of the ecological footprintsB.thought highly of the United States and CanadaC.thought India was an extremely poor countryD.thought rich people made great contributions to society( D )Birds learn how to fly much like a human baby learns to walk:a combination of instinct (本能)and practice. Not all birds are instinctive flyers, however.Flightless birds, such as penguins and ostriches (鸵鸟),no longer have the instinct to imitate their cousins. The newborn of bird species that can fly, such as pigeons and hummingbirds, have a sense that it is a natural pare this to a human baby who instinctively understands that standing upright is a natural goal to achieve. Most birds cannot fly until their muscle structure has had time to develop. At that time,a nest is their entire world.Baby birds are not responsible for food gathering or protection of their nest,so they develop psychological dependence.Parent birds begin to teach their baby birds the importance of flying by remaining a short distance away from the nest during feeding. If the young birds are to survive, they must step away from the nest.Frequently, this means a few hard falls to the ground followed by a long trip back to the safety of the nest. All practice, awkward as it may seem, does teach the baby birds about the mechanics of flight.Falls to the ground become more controlled as the young bird stretches out its wings, and short jumps back to the nest become longer flight.Parent birds continue to encourage them to leave the nest for longer periods of time. Some species even adopt a tough love policy, leaving the baby birds alone to develop their own instincts. After a few weeks of practice and imitation, young birds learn more advanced flying techniques:how to use the wind for lift and how to make controlled landings.Eventually, all of these become instinctive and young birds can start families of their own.For birds, flying is a demanding exercise.Fortunately, many birds have air sacs (气囊)that act as human lungs, and each breath a bird takes is much more concentrated than humans’breath.Birds also have very well-developed pectoral (胸部的)muscles for constant wing movement and a strong heart for endurance. Most birds are actually swimming through the air, using the weight of the air beneath them to keep themselves in the air.32.What birds and human babies have in common is that they .A.have to learn new things to surviveB.are born with some kind of instinctC.have many goals to achieveD.like to imitate their cousins as they grow33.Why do parent birds stay a short distance away from the nest during feeding?( )A.To let baby birds know flying is important.B.To make baby birds more independent.C.To develop baby birds’ muscle structure.D.To make baby birds become brave.34.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?( )A.Body structure that helps birds fly.B.The similarity between birds and humans.C.Difficulties birds might meet when they fly.D.The advantages birds have when they fly.35.What would be the best title for the passage?( )A.Practice makes perfectB.How do birds learn how to fly?C.Birds have an instinct for survivalD.Why do some birds adopt a tough love policy?

ASuddenly another thought went through Kate's mind like an electric shock. An express train was due to go past about thirty minutes later. If it were not stopped, that long train, full of passengers, would fall into the stream.“Someone must go to the station and warn the stationmaster,”Kate thought. But who was to go?She would have to go herself. There was no one else.In wind and rain she started on her difficult way.Soon she was at the bridge that crossed the Des Moines River,a bridge also built of wood, just like the bridge across Honey Creek. The storm had not washed this away, but there was no footpath across it.She would have to cross it by stepping from sleeper(枕木)to sleeper. With great care she began the dangerous crossing, sometimes on her hands and knees, hardly daring to look down between the sleepers into the wild flood waters below. If she should slip, she would fall between the sleepers, into the rapidly flowing stream. At last—she never knew how long it had taken her—she felt solid ground under her feet. But there was no time to rest. She still had to run more than half a mile and had only a few minutes left.Unless she reached the station before the express did, many, many lives would be lost. She did reach the station just as the train came into sight.Fortunately the stationmaster was standing o utside.“The bridge is down!Stop the train!Oh,please stop it!”Kate shouted breathlessly. The stationmaster went pale.He rushed into the station building and came back with a signal light. He waved the red light as the train came into the station. It was not a second too early.21.What did Kate decide to do?A.Stop the express train. I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said:”Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today - and 45minutes each day for the rest of the week.”A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time. His constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染) other students.Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinkin g. Without fail one would declare, ”But I’m just not creative.”“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep?”“Oh, sure.”“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a t ime machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you?”“Nobody. To help them to see their creativity.B. To find out about their sleeping habits.C. To help them to improve their memory.D. To find out about their ways of thinking.CReading can be a social activity. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now, the website turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.Members go on the site and register the books they own and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.Bruce Pederso n, the managing director of BookCrossing, says, “The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. BookCrossing combines both.”Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossing to keep them updated about where their books have been found. Bruce peterson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.zxx.kBookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the “real” and not the virtual(虚拟). Online Reading: A Virtual TourB. Electronic Books: A new TrendC. A Book Group Brings Tradition BackD. A Website Links People through BooksDA new collection of photos brings an unsuccessful Antarctic voyage back to life.Frank Hurley’s pictures would be outstanding----undoubtedly first-rate photo-journalism---if they had been made last week. In fact, they were shot from 1914 through 1916, most of them after a disastrous shipwreck(海滩), by a cameraman who had no reasonable expectation of survival. Many of the images were stored in an ice chest, under freezing water, in the damaged wooden ship. The ship was the Endurance, a small, tight, Norwegian-built three-master that was intended to take Sir Ernest Shackleton and a small crew of seamen and scientists, 27 men in all, to the southernmost shore of Antarctica’s Weddell Sea. From that point Shackleton wanted to force a passage by dog sled(雪橇) across the continent. The journey was intended to achieve more than what Captain Robert Falcon Scott had done. Captain Scott had reached the South Pole early in 1912 but had died with his four companions on the march back.As writer Caroline Alexander makes clear in her forceful and well-researched story The Endurance, adventuring was even then a thoroughly commercial effort. Scott’s last journey, completed as be lay in a tent dying of c old and hunger, caught the world’s imagination, and a film made in his honor drew crowds. Shackleton, a onetime British merchant-navy officer who had got to within 100 miles of the South Pole in 1908, started a business before his 1914 voyage to make money from movie and still photography. Frank Hurley, a confident and gifted Australian photographer who knew the Antarctic, was hired to make the images, most of which have never before been published.13. What do we know about the photos taken by Hurley?A. They were made last weekB. They showed undersea sceneriesC. They were found by a cameramanD. They recorded a disastrous adventure14. Who reached the South Pole first according to the text?A. Frank HurleyB. Ernest ShackletonC. Robert Falcon ScottD. Caroline Alexander15.
