In the early years of last century, a Dutch scientist named Eijkman was trying to discover the cause of beri-beri.At first he thought it was transmitted(传播) by a germ(病菌).He was working in a Japanese hospital, where the patients were fed on polished(磨光) rice which had the outer coverings removed from the grain.it was thought this would be easier for weak and sick people to digest(消化).Eijkman thought his germ theory was proved when he noticed the chickens in the hospital yard, which were fed on remains from the patients' plates, were also showing signs of the disease. He thentried to separate the germ, which he thought was causing the disease, but his experiments were interrupted by a hospital official, who ordered that the rice without coverings, even though left over by the patients, was too good for chickens. It should be recooked for the patients, and the chickens should be fed on cheap rice with the outer coverings still on the grain.Eijkman noticed that the chickens began to recover on the newdiet. He began to consider the possibility that eating unpolishedrice(糙米) somehow prevented or cured beri-beri —— even that alack of some element(成分) in the coverings may be the cause of the disease.Indeed this was the case. The element needed to preventberi-beri was shortly afterwards separated from rice coverings and is now known as vitamin B.The milled rice, though more expensive, wasin fact causing the disease the hospital was trying to cure. 东北师大附中2014届高三第三次摸底考试英语2
东北师大附中2014届高三“三年磨一剑”高考模拟英语2DNow that America has declared a state of swine flu (猪流感) public health emergency, you may be asking yourself — what am I supposed to do? Here is a list of practical steps you can take to prepare and protect yourself and your family.1) Know the symptoms— Here are some of the symptoms that sound like swine flu —fevers over 20140 degrees (37.8℃), body aches, cough, runny nose, and sometimes, nausea (恶心) and diarrhea (腹泻). It’s also useful to know if you might have had an exposure (暴露) eitherby recent travel to Mexico, or to the areas of known cases so far in America — specific areas of California, Texas, New York, Ohio and Kansas. Or you may have been exposed to a sick person who came from those areas.2) Don’t panic— If you have symptoms that sound like swine flu, do not rush to hospitals. Not only is this difficult for the healthcare system, it can also be potentially dangerous for everyone. Call your doctor or local public health clinic before going in.3) Contain the illness— Hand-washing works. Wash, wash and wash. Invest in some hand sanitizer (消毒洗手液) for the whole family.Avoid hugs and kisses of well-wishers, and do not share telephone handsets or computers. Be especially careful to always cough into the elbow of your arm (yes! the elbow, not your hand!). Cover your cough and sneeze to protect others.4) What about a mask?— The data shows that masks do work — as long as there is a tight seal (密封) about the mouth and nose.5) Eat the pork (if you want) — Swine flu gets its name because pigs can get the infection and spread it to each other — as well as to humans. This latest virus contains pieces that indicate it evolved (演变) from swine flu virus, and can now spread from person to person. Swine flu is not spread by properly prepared and cooked pork products. So if you want to eat pork, you can.6) Getting sick? Stay home!— In our go-go-go culture and these severe economic times, it can be very hard to call a boss and cancela day’s work. Now, however, if you or your loved ones are feelinglike there’s a flu coming on, stay home.7) Stockpile?—Right now, it’s too early for any of us to become a Swine Flu Shut-In, but the public health department recommends that each home have two weeks of supplies, in case we must stay home —either for illness or to help contain transmission. That means two weeks of food for everyone in your home, two weeks of all medications, and, if you’re like most people, two we eks of books and DVDs.52. The purpose of the writer is mainly to __________.A. analyze the possible causes of swine fluB. tell people how to protect themselves from swine fluC. give people some information about the present situation of swine fluD. suggest some treatments for swine flu53. According to the passage, which of the following is one of the reasons why the disease is called “Swine flu”?A. Some patients have eaten some not-so-well-cooked pork.B. Some patients have contact with pigs in their life.C. The virus is probably developed from swine flu virus.D. The disease is mostly passed from pigs to humans.54. Suppose Mr Fernando has just been back from Mexico and he’s gota high fever and runny nose, what shall he do?A. Go to hospital as soon as possible.B. Ask a day off and stay at home.C. Call his doctor to ask for directions.D. Take some medicine and have a good rest.55. Which of the following is NOT a suggestion given by the writer?A. Cough and sneeze into your hands.B. Wash your hands and wear a mask.C. Go on eating pork if you like.D. Store some food and medicine at home.EIt was a lovely day at the park and Stella Bianchi was enjoying the sunshine with her two children when a young boy, aged about four, approached her two-year-old son and pushed him to the ground.“I’d watched him for a little while and my son was the fourth orfifth child he’d shoved,” she says. “I went over to them, pickedup my son, turned to the boy and said, firmly, ‘No, we don’t push.’” What happened next was unexpected. “The boy’s mother ran toward me from across the park,” Stella says. “I thought she was coming over to apologize, but instead she started shouting at me for‘disciplining her child’. All I did was let him know his behaviorwas unacceptable. Was I supposed to sit back while her kid didwhatever he wanted, hurting other children in the process?”Professor Brendon White of Monash University sa ys, “There’s an idea that children are the property of the parents. We see our children as an extension of ourselves, so if you’re saying that my child is behaving inappropriately, then that’s somehow a criticism of me.”In those circumstances, it’s diffic ult to know whether to approachthe child directly or the parent first. “I’d go to the child first,” says Andrew Fuller, author of Tricky Kids. “Usually a quiet reminder that ‘we don’t do that here’ is enough. Kids have finely tuned antennae (直觉) for how to behave in different settings. And bringingit up with the parent first may make them feel neglectful, whichcould cause problems.Of course, approaching the child first can bring its own headaches, too.” This is why White recommends that you approach the parentsfirst. “Raise your concerns with the parents if they’re there andask them to deal with it,” he says.“Men might feel uneasy about dealing with other people’s children and feel nervous. A new set of considerations has become most important as part of the debate about how we handle children.”56. What does the underlined word “shoved” probably mean?A. played withB. pushedC.watched D. got close to57. When the boy’s mother came over, Stella Bianchi expected her to ___________.A. make an apologyB. quarrel with herC. discipline her own boyD. take her own boy away58. What should one do when seeing other people’s kids misbehave according to Andrew Fuller?A. Talk to them directly in a mild way.B. Complain to their parents politely.C. Simply leave them alone.D. Punish them lightly.59. Liu Xiang, a 21-year-old Chinese athlete, got the gold medal for the men’s 110 meters hurdles at the Olympic Stadium in the 28th Olympics in Athens. He clocked an excellent 12.91 seconds to equal the world record set by Britain’s Collin Jackson in 1993. Terrence Trammell of the United States won the silver, Anier Garcia of Cuba took the bronze. It is the first gold that Chinese men’s athlete has ever won from the track and field in the Olympic history. China has won over 100 gold medals from the summer Olympic Games since 1984 but its male athletes only got one medal from Olympic most popular sport. That was high jumper Zhu Jianhua’s bronze in the 1984 Los Angeles Games. The Shanghai native, with his father a truck driver and mother an out of work housewife, loved sports when he was very little. Liu was selected to the Junior Sports School of Putuo District of Shanghai to practice jumping as a fourth grader in the primary school. But after a bone test showing that he would not be able to become a tall man, Liu was asked to give up sports one year later, although he had won the national champion- ship at that level. The year of 1998 was a turning point for Liu’s career, when he attracted Coach Sun Haiping’s attention as a 15-year-old jumper. The world has put the Olympics a Johnson-Kuy cibtest. But surprisingly Johnson crashed out of the Games after falling at the ninth hurdle at round two. Johnson’s early exit paved the way for Liu’s win. He finally took the gold medal and put a Chinese man’s name on the record book.。

AThe summer I was ten, my mother decided to bring us to the world of art. My brother and I were not very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take drawing classes or painting classes but that we would have to spend one afternoon a week with her at the Fine Arts Museum. Before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting styles. It was almost as bad as being in school. Who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool?First we had to read about ancient Egyptians and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. My 12-year-old brother thought this was so funny, but I was not interested. Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly(蜷曲的)hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. I certainly couldn’t see what was so great about art.On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary. In it, a woman was reading to a child. More people are working harder than ever before in France. In the cities the traditional leisurely midday meal is disappearing. Offices, shops, and factories are discovering the great efficiency of a short lunch hour in company lunch rooms. In almost all lines of work emphasis now falls on ever increasing output. Thus the “typical” Frenchman produces more, earns more, and buys more consumer goods than his counterpart(对应的事物)of only a generation ago. He gains in creature comfort and ease of life. What he loses to some degree is his sense of personal uniqueness, or individuality. Some say that France has been Americanized. This is because the United States is a world symbol of the technological society and its consumer products. The so-called Americanization of France has its critics. They fear that “assembly line(装配线)life” will lead to the disappearance of the pleasures of the more graceful and leisurely (but less productive)old French style. What will happen, they ask, to taste, elegance, and the cultivation of the good things in life—joy in the smell of a freshly picked apple, a walk by the river, or just happy hours of conversation in a local café?Since the late 1950s life in France has indeed taken on qualities of rush, tension, and the pursuit(追求)of material gains. Some of the strongest critics of the new way of life are the young, especially university students. They are concerned with the future, and they fear that France is threatened by the achievements of this competitive culture. At times, they have reacted against the trend with considerable violence. In spite of the critics, however, countless Frenchmen are committed to keeping France in the forefront of the modern economic world. They find that the present life brings more rewards, conveniences, and pleasures than that of the past. They believe that a modern, industrial France is preferable to the old.28.Which of the following is a feature of the old French way of life?A.Leisure, elegance, and efficiency. B.Elegance, efficiency, and taste.C.Leisure, elegance, and taste. D.Efficiency, taste, and convenient.29.Which of the following is NOT true about Frenchmen?A.Many of them prefer the modern life style.B.They actually enjoy working at the assembly line.C.They are more concerned with money than before.D.They are more competitive than the old generation.30.The passage suggests that __________.A.great changes have occurred in the life style of all FrenchmenB.it’s now unlikely to see a Frenchman enjoying a walk by the riverC.the French are fed up with the smell of freshly picked applesD.in pursuing material gains the French are suffering losses elsewhere31.The main idea of the passage is “__________”.A.Changes in the French Way of Life B.Criticism of the New Life StyleC.The Americanization of France D.Features of the New Way of LifeDIt seems hard to watch someone yawn(打哈欠)and not to yawn ourselves. Even reading about yawning can make you do it. Now, a new study has found why yawning has such a powerful force.Yawning when others yawn, the study suggests, is a sign of pity and a form of social connection. Kids don’t develop this deeply rooted behavior until around age four, the study found. Kids with autism (自闭症)are less likely to catch yawns. In the most serious cases, they never do. Yawning might help doctors to see whether the children are developing rightly. The work could also lead to a better understanding of the ways that people communicate and connect.“Emotional infection seems to be a born thing that connects us together,” said Molly Helt, a graduate student in psychology at the University of Connecticut. “Yawning may be part of that.” Inspiration for her study came when she tried to get her own autistic son to clear his ears on an airplane. She repeatedly yawned at him, hoping he would yawn back. He never did.“The fact that autistic kids don’t do it might mean they’re really missin g out on that emotional connection with people around them, ” she said. “The biggest thing people try to figure out after birth is how we become humans and understand that humans have minds that are different from others’," she added. "Autistic people neve r seem to understand that.”Like infectious (有感染力的)laughter and crying, scientists have found that yawning is a shared experience that promotes social connection. Helt said it could fight stress after a period of being nervous and spread a feeling of calm through a group.32.According to the first two paragraphs, what does the new study suggest?A.Yawning is a form of communication.B.It is easy to stop yawning when you see others yawn.C.Children follow others in yawning just after they are born.D.Yawning has some mysterious force which is related to God.33.According to Molly Helt, __________.A.humans differ from animals because they communicate with othersB.yawning is a kind of emotional connection among humansC.emotions are infectious, but yawning is notD.yawning helps clear ears on planes34.Which of the following is NOT true about yawning?A.It is natural to yawn back if people around you yawn.B.Some kids are too young to yawn after others.C.Yawning can be used to test children’s development.[来源:学科网]D.Kids with autism yawn easily when others yawn.35.The author implies in the last paragraph that __________.A.yawning can make people feel relaxedB.it is bad manners to yawn on some social occasionsC.the more you yawn, the happier you will beD.yawning is different from infectious laughter and crying in theory第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AWhile we are on the subject of crime, our listener question this week comes from Mohamad Firouzi in Iran. He wants to know about the history of Alcatraz Island and the prison that once operated there.Alcatraz Island is in the harbor of San Francisco, California. It is best known for being a federal prison, which was also called “The Rock.” It was once the most famous prison in America. Alcatraz was a military prison from the late eighteen fifties until the nineteen thirties. Then it became a federal prison for the country’s worst criminals. These included murderers, bank robbers and kidnappers. One of the main reasons federal officials chose Alcatraz Island to detain these prisoners was because they thought it would be impossible for prisoners to escape.Cold, deep and dangerous waters surround the island. Also, the distance between the island and San Francisco is too far for most humans to swim. No prisoner was ever officially reported to have successfully escaped. However, in nineteen sixty-two, three men broke out of the prison. Each man worked very hard at night for many months to cut through the stone wall of his cell. They made false heads out of paper, paint and hair. On the night of June eleventh, the men placed the heads in their beds to make it look as if they were sleeping. Then, the prisoners escaped through the holes in their cells to get to the water. The men were never seen or heard from again. It is believed that they drowned while trying to swim to San Francisco. The prison closed in nineteen sixty-three because of the high cost of keeping prisoners there and the need for major repairs. The school undertook a comprehensive effort to completely transform the culture of the school and added a motivated group of talented teachers. Western altered(改变)the school day to add opportunities for students to get additional credits toward graduation and created smaller learning groups. As part of these comprehensive changes, the school’s leadership also focused on four main reforms to transform their school.First, improvements started with the change in the relationship between the school and students to create a caring atmosphere at the school. Using the “Capturing Kids’ Hearts” strategies, school leadership and teachers began building a trusting environment and students and families described seeing changes aimed at improving student outcomes and ensuring the success of every student. The school day was altered to add more options for students to obtain additional credits toward graduation. Students and teachers were grou ped into “houses,” so that smaller groups of teachers and counselors(辅导员)could create one-on-one relationships with students. Teachers and counselors said that the altered school day provides time to address student’s individual concerns and develop individualized learning plans to put every student on a path to graduation. The school also made changes to encourage parents to support school and encourage real dialogues between parents and the teachers and leaders at Western. Funded in part through the United Way, the school created a family engagement center to get parents more involved in their children’s education, particularly parents of English language learners. Parents like Ally Gaona and Martha Mendez told me that they had a voice and the tools to eng age in their children’s learning and that they recognize that the main responsibility for their children’s learning must rest with the parents. Parents were passionate about these positive changes and said that these changes signaled to the entire the community that the school was serious about family engagement.25. What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To attract people to the school.B. To talk about the school reforms.C. To introduce the schoolD. To introduce the relationship between the school and students.26. How many main reforms are mentioned in the passage?A. TwoB. ThreeC. FourD. Five27. Students and teachers were grouped into “houses in order to ___.A. provide time to address student’s individual concerns.B. add more options for students to obtain additional credits toward graduation..C. create one-on-one relationships with students.D. develop individualized learning plans to put every student on a path to graduation.28. Which statement is the right according to the passage?A. Parents didn’t support the reforms.B. The reforms intended to improve student outcomes and ensure the success of every student.C. The school asked parents to donate their money.D. the school was not serious about family engagement.CBEIJING - China will build a nation-wide network within three to five years to monitor the impact of air pollution on health, a latest step to deal with a persistent smog crisis in big cities, an official said.A total of 43 monitoring spots will be set up in 16 provinces and municipalities frequently engulfed by smog so as to facilitate research on air pollutants in different regions, the impact on the health of vulnerable groups and the study of related diseases, said Xu Dongqun, an official with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. With funds allocated by the central government, the study will provide reference for preventive efforts to reduce the PM 2.5, Xu said. In 1983, the young tech innovator was attending a conference in Aspen when he and the group decided to bury as a stunt during a design convention. The tube that was filled with an eclectic collection of goods- ranging from the then-new apple mouse to a six-pack of beer for the people who discovered the time capsule- was meant to be dug up 20 years later. There was a problem with that plan, however, as everyone involved forgot where it was buried. The final discovery happened at the hands of the crew from the National Geographic Channel`s reality show called Diggers. The discovery was well documented and is surely going to be featured on an upcoming episode, and even the experts had problems finding this particular treasure. CNET reports that in spite of their preparations and clear idea of where the 13-foot-long tube was, it still took them two hours to dig it up using heavy machinery. To anyone removed from the tech industry, the accomplishment in finding the tube appears to be the biggest accomplishment. To others, the most interesting object would likely be the `Lisa` mouse placed in the tube by the hands of a then-28-year-old Jobs. The Lisa Mouse, which Jobs named after his daughter, was one of the first commercial computer mice soled publicly, making it a rarity at the time. The Aspen Historical Society is going to help the show creators catalogue the tube`s contents- but no word yet whether or not the Diggers cracked open one of the six bottles of Boddington`s Ale that was left inside for the people who found the tube.33.Who found the time capsule buried by Steve Jobs?A. Apple founder Steve Jobs himself.B. the crew from the National Geographic Channel`s reality show called Diggers.C. Steve Jobs' friends.D. Kites, mostly made of paper, are often designed into diverse shapes, some with adorable animal images like butterflies or eagles. People often fly kites in an open area, whic h is a popular form of entertainment. Besides, a pen container with the Chinese ink painting on it is also a nice choice. Meanwhile, more and more students are getting into the field to show their capabilities. But opinions on whether they should do it are divided into two aspects. Students who are in favor of it believe that it offers an opportunity to make them get in touch with society ahead of time. What’s more, it will to ughen them better. On the contrary, it’s thought that opening online stores will distract students from their study. Moreover, so naive are students that they would be taken in easily. As for me, opening online stores is a good idea, partly because we should gain and accumulate some experience before getting into society; partly because we need to achieve our maturity earlier. Just find the balance.听力原文:1.W: Do you get along well with Jack at the office?M: He ordered everyone around as if he were the boss there.2.M: I think I’ll order the chocolate ice cream because I didn’t eat lunch earlier today.W: No dessert for me. I am not at all used to this cold weather, but I am glad to say that I have all the clothes for this freezing weather. When I first got to know that I would be attending this international conference here in Finland, I had no idea what kind of clothes I should take along. I didn’t know what to do when I thought of this two week stay here, with a rather formal dinner, a few parties, social gatherings and a dance during the conference.Fortunately, my friend Julia has been to Northern Europe. Yes, she was a great help. She helped to solve my biggest problem. She placed an order for some warm suits and dresses, business-type clothes, of course, of dark colours. She also bought me some skirts and blouses so that I could wear the same clothes in several different ways. A couple of lively coloured dresses will give me a nice change from time to time. She also helped to choose a very warm raincoat and a pair of boots.Oh, how lucky I am to have such a helpful friend. She saved me a lot of trouble.。
