For each multiple choice question, there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET TWO.PASSAGE ONEGiven the lack of fit between gifted students and their schools, it is not surprising that such students often have little good to say about their school experience. In one study of 400 adults who had achieved distinction in all areas of life, researchers found that three-fifths of these individuals either did badly in school or were unhappy in school. Few MacArthur Prize fellows, winners of the MacArthur Award for creative accomplishment, had good things to say about their precollegiate schooling if they had not been placed in advanced programs.Anecdotal reports support this. Pablo Picasso, Charles Darwin, Mark Twain, Oliver Goldsmith, and William Butler Yeats all disliked school. So did Winston Churchill, who almost failed out of Harrow, an elite British school. About Oliver Goldsmith, one of his teachers remarked, "Never was so dull a boy. " Often these children realize that they know more than their teachers, and their teachers often feel that these children are arrogant, inattentive, or unmotivated. Some of these gifted people may have done poorly in school because their gifts were not scholastic. Maybe we can account for Picasso in this way. But most fared poorly in school not because they lacked ability but because they found school unchallenging and consequently lost interest. Yeats described the lack of fit between his mind and school: "Because I had found it difficult to attend to anything less interesting than my own thoughts, I was difficult to teach."As noted earlier, gifted children of all kinds tend to be strong-willed nonconformists. Nonconformity and stubbornness (and Yeats's level of arrogance and self-absorption) are likely to lead to Conflicts with teachers. When highly gifted students in any domain talk about what was important to thedevelopment of their abilities, they are far more likely to mention their families than their schools or teachers. A writing prodigy studied by David Feldman and Lynn Goldsmith was taught far more about writing by his journalist father than his English teacher. High-IQ children, in Australia studied by Miraca Gross had much more positive feelings about their families than their schools. About half of the mathematicians studied by Benjamin Bloom had little good to say about school. They all did well in school and took honors classes when available, and some skipped grades.41. The author quotes the remarks of one of Oliver Goldsmith's teachers______.A.to provide support for his argument.B.to illustrate the strong will of some gifted children.C.to explain how dull students can also be successful.D.to show how poor Oliver's performance was at school.42. Pablo Picasso is listed among the many gifted children who______.A.paid no attention to their teachers in class.B.contradicted their teachers much too often.C.could not cope with their studies at school successfully.D.behaved arrogantly and stubbornly in the presence of their teachers.43. Many gifted people attributed their success______.A.mainly to parental help and their education at home.B.both to school instruction and to their rparents' coaching.C.more to their parents' encouragement than to school training.D.less to their systematic education than to their talent.PASSAGE TWOA controversy erupted in the scientific community in early 1998 over the use of DNA(deoxyribonucleic acid ) fingerprinting in criminal investigations. DNA fingerprinting was introduced in 1987 as a method to identify individuals based on a pattern seen in their DNA, the molecule of which genes are made. DNA is present in every cell of the body except red blood cells. DNA fingerprinting has been used successfully in various ways, such as to determine paternity where it is not clear who the father of a particular child is. However, it is in the area of criminal investigations that DNA fingerprinting has potentially powerful and controversial uses.DNA fingerprinting and other DNA analysis techniques have revolutionized criminal investigations by giving investigators powerful new tools in the attempt to trove guilt, not just establish innocence. When used in criminal investigations, a DNA fingerprint pattern from a suspect is compared with a DNA fingerprint pattern obtained from such material as hairs or blood found at the scene of a crime. A match between the two DNA samples can be used as evidence to convict a suspect. The controversy in 1998 stemmed form a report published in December 1991 by population geneticists Richard C. Lewontin of Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., and Daniel L. Hartl called into question the methods to calculate how likely it is that a match between two DNA fingerprints might occur by chance alone. In particular, they argued that the current method cannot properly determine the likelihood that two DNA samples will match because they came from the same individual rather than simply from two different individuals who are members of the same ethnic group. Lewontin and Hartl called for better surveys of DNA patterns methods are adequate. In response to their criticisms, population geneticists Ranajit Chakraborty of the University of Texas in Dallas and Kenneth K.Kidd of Yale University in New Haven, Conn., argued that enough data are already available to show that the methods currently being used are adequate. In January 1998, however, the federal Bureau of Investigation and laboratories that conduct DNA tests announced that they would collect additional DNA samples form various ethnic groups in an attempt to resolve some of these questions. And, in April, a National Academy of Sciences called for strict standards and system of accreditation for DNA testinglaboratories.44. Before DNA fingerprinting is used, suspects____.A. would have to leave their fingerprints for further investigationsB. would have to submit evidence for their innocenceC. could easily escape conviction of guiltD. could be convicted of guilt as well45. The attitude of the Federal Bereau of Investigation shows that ____.A. enough data are yet to be collected form various ethnic groups to confirm theunlikelihood of two DNA samples coming from two individual membersB. enough data of DNA samples should be collected to confirm that only DNA samplesform the same person can matchC. enough data are yet to be collected from various ethnic groups to determine thelikelihood of two different DNA samples coming form the same personD. additional samples from various ethnic groups should be collected to determine thattwo DNA samples are unlikely to come from the same person46. The National Academy of Sciences holds the stance that ____.A. DNA testing should be systematizedB. only authorized laboratories can conduct DNA testingC. it is authorized to work out standards for testingD. it has the right to accredit laboratories for DNA testingPASSAGE THREEA few months ago I was nominated for Governor of the great State of New York, to run against Stewart L. Woodford and John T. Hoffman, on an independent ticket. I somehow felt that I had one prominent advantage over these gentlemen, and that was, good character. It was easy tosee by the newspapers, that if ever they had known what it was to bear a good name, that time had gone by. It was plain that in these latter years they had become familiar with all manner of shameful crimes. But at the very moment that I was exalting my advantage and joying in it in secret, there was a muddy undercurrent of discomfort "riling" the deeps of my happiness -- and that was, the having to hear my name bandied about in familiar connection with those of such people. But after all, I could not recede. I was fully committed and must go on with the fight. As I was looking listlessly over the papers at breakfast, I came across this paragraph, and I may truly say I never was so confounded before:PERJURY. -- Perhaps, now that Mr. Mark Twain is before the people as a candidate for Governor, he will condescend to explain how he came to be convicted of perjury by thirty-four witnesses, in Wakawak, Cochin China, in 1863, the intent of which perjury was to rob a poor native widow and her helpless family of a meagre plantain patch, their only stay and support in their bereavement and their desolation. Mr. Twain owes it to himself, as well as to the great people whose suffrages he asks, to clear this matter up. Will he do it?I thought I should burst with amazement! Such a cruel, heartless charge -- I never had seen Cochin China! I never had beard of Wakawak! I didn't know a plantain patch from a kangaroo! I did not know what to do. I was crazed and helpless. I let the day slip away without doing anything at all.[Mem. -- During the rest of the campaign this paper never referred to me in any other way than as "the infamous perjurer Twain."]Next came the "Gazette," with this:WANTED TO KNOW. -- Will the new candidate for Governor deign to explain to certain of his fellow-citizens (who are suffering to vote for him!) the little circumstance of his cabin-mates in Montana losing small valuables from time to time, until at last, these things having been invariably found on Mr. Twain's person or in his "trunk" (newspaper he rolled his traps in), they felt compelled to give him a friendly admonition for his own good, and so tarred and featheredhim and rode him on a rail, and then advised him to leave a permanent vacuum in the place he usually occupied in the camp. Will he do this?Could anything be more deliberately malicious than that? For I never was in Montana in my life.[After this, this journal customarily spoke of me as "Twain, the Montana Thief."]I got to pick up papers apprehensively -- much as one would lift a desired blanket which he had some idea might have a rattlesnake under it.By this time anonymous letters were getting to be an important part of my mail matter. This form was common:How about that old woman you kicked of...Shortly the principal Republican journal "convicted" me of wholesale bribery, and the leading Democratic paper "nailed" an aggravated case of blackmailing to me.[In this way I acquired two additional names: "Twain, the Filthy Corruptionist," and "Twain, the Loathsome Embracer."]There was no possible way of getting out of it, and so, in deep humiliation, I set about preparing to "answer" a mass of baseless charges and mean and wicked falsehoods. But I never finished the task, for the very next morning a paper came out with a new horror, a fresh malignity, and seriously charged me with burning a lunatic asylum with all its inmates, because it obstructed the view from my house. This threw me into a sort of panic. And at last, as a due and fitting climax to the shameless persecution that party rancor had inflicted upon me, nine little toddling children of all shades of color and degrees of raggedness were taught to rush on to the platform at a public meeting and clasp me around the legs and call me PA!I gave up. I hauled down my colors and surrendered. I was not equal to the requirements of a Gubernatorial campaign in the State of New York, and so I sent in my withdrawal from the candidacy, and in bitterness of spirit signed it,"Truly yours,"Once a decent man, but now MARK TWAIN, I. P., M. T., B. S., D. T., F. C., and L. E."47. According to Para.1, Twain felt uncomfortable probably because_______.A. he was afraid that his good fame would be blackenedB. he felt reluctant to associate with the evil peopleC. it brought no honor to the victor in an unequal contestD. it was too late to recede from a problematic competiton48. The Gazatte accused Twain of_______.A. throwing away his friend’s belongingsB. making a practical joke of his enemiesC. stealing and hiding a mate’s precious stuffD. occupying the camp of another person49. To injure Twain’s reputation, his rivals tried all the following EXCEPT_______.A. media disinformationB. letters if false accusationC. anonymous blackmailsD. humiliation in publicSECTION B SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONSIn this section, there are five short answer questions based on the passages in Section A. 大学英语四级试卷模拟一试卷答案对照版CET-4 Test 1 Part 1 Reading Comprehension(35 minutes) Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C), and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:It was once believed that being overweight was healthy, but nowadays few people subscribe to this viewpoint. While many people are fighting the battle to reduce weight, studies are being conducted concerning the appetite and how it is controlled by both emotional and biochemical factors. Some of the conclusions of these studies may give insights into how to deal with weight problems. For example, when several hundred people were asked about their eating habits in times of stress, 44 percent said they reacted to stressful situations by eating. Further investigations with both humans and animals indicated that it is not food which relieves tension but rather the act of chewing.A test in which subjects were blindfolded showed that obese(肥胖)people have a keener sense of taste and crave (渴望) more flavorful food than non-obese people. When deprived of the variety and intensity of tastes, obese people are not satisfied and consequently eat more tofulfill this need. Blood samples taken from people after they were shown a picture of food revealed that overweight people reacted with an increase in blood insulin(胰岛素), a chemical associated with appetite. This did not happen to average-weight people. In another experiment, results showed that certain people have aspecific, biologically induced hunger for carbohydrate(糖类).Eating carbohydrates raises the level of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain. Enough serotonin produces a sense of satiation(满足),and hunger for carbohydrates subsides.Exercise has been recommended as an important part of a weigh-loss program. However, It has been found that mild exercise, such as using the stairs instead of the elevator,is better in the long run than taking on a strenuous program, such as jogging, which many people find difficult to continue over long periods of time and which also increase appetite.1. It can be inferred from the passage that _______.A) overweight people are tenseB) thin people don't eat when under stressC) weight watchers should chew on something inedible when tenseD) 56 percent of the population isn't overweight.2. According to the passage, insulin _______.A) increases in the bloodstream when people eat large amounts of foodB) can be used to lessen the appetiteC) causes a chemical reaction when food is seenD) levels don't change in average-weight people who see food3. In order to lose weight, it would be a good idea for heavy people to _______.A) jog 3 miles daily and chew on carrot sticksB) avoid stressful situations and have control over theireating habitsC) eat plenty of chewy carbohydratesD) walk up stairs and look at pictures of food4. Which of the following exercises might be best for an overweight person to engage in daily?A) An evening walkB) A long swimC) Cross-country skiingD) 10-mile bicycle rides5. What can be said about serotonin?A) It is a chemical that increases the appetite.B) Only certain people produce it in their brains.C) It tells the brain when a person is full.D) It neurotransmits carbohydrates to the brain. Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage: Washington Irving was America's first man of letters to be knowninternationally. His works were received enthusiastically both in England and in the United States. He was, in fact, one of themost successful writers of his time in either country, delighting a large general public and at the same time winning the admiration of fellow writers like Scott in Britain and Poe and Hawthorne in the United States. The respect in which he was held was partly owing to the man himself, with his warm friendliness, his good sense, his urbanity, his gay spirits, has artistic integrity, his love of both the Old World and the new. Thackeray describedIrving as "a gentleman, who, though himself born in no very high sphere, was most finished, polished, witty; socially the equal of the most refined Europeans." In England he was granted an honorary degree from Oxford-- an unusual honorfor a citizen of a young, uncultured nation--- and he received the medal of the Royal Society of Literature; America made him ambassador to Spain.Irving's background provides little to explain his literary achievements. A gift but deliberate child, he had little schooling, He studied law, but without zeal, and never did practise seriously. He was immune to his strict Prebyterian home environment, frequenting both social gatherings andthe theatre.6. The main point of the first paragraph is that WashingtonIrving was ______.A) America's first man of lettersB) a great writer who was successful in his own country and other parts of the world as wellC) a man who won the respect of other writers because ofhishigh social statusD) a man who was able to move from literature to politics7. What is implied by the comment about Scott, Poe and Hawthorne?A) Irving's great popularity resulted in the admiration of Scott, Poe and Hawthorne.B) More Americans than Britains admired Irving.C) Irving's work was not only popular, but also of high literary quality.D) Irving's success was attributed to his family background.8. What can be said about Irving's law career?A) He only began to practice law late in life.B) He spent very little time working as a lawyer.C) He never practiced law although he studied it .D) He worked as a lawyer with great enthusiasm.9. Why did Thackeray think that Irving's social grace was unusual?A) Because Irning's degree was honorable and unusual.B) Because his parents were not aristocratic.C) Because he had good sense and gay spirits.D) Because he often exhibited warm friendiness.10. Which of the following best describes the effect ofIrving's Presbyterian background on his life?A) It had almost no effect on his life.B) It promoted his interest in law.C) It fostered his love for literature.D) It enabled him to become a successful writer.Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:Time spent in bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book lover or merely there to buy a book as a present. Whatever the person , you can soon become totally in awareof your surroundings. You soon become engrossed(全神贯注)in some books, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and mustdash off to keep some forgotten appointment --- without buying a book,of course. This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. A music shop is very like a bookshop. You can wander round such places to your heart's content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the inevitable greeting:" Can I help you, sir?" You Needn't buy anything you don't want. In a bookshop, an assistant should remain in the backgrounduntil you have finished browsing(游览).Then, and only then, are his services necessary. You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop. It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on ancient coins and to come out carrying a copy of the latest best-selling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing -- something which had only vaguely interested you up until then. The simple reason for this is that there are more different ways of looking at things present in the first kind of society, There are more ideas, disagreements in interest, and more groups and organizationswith different beliefs. In addition, there is usually a greaterworldly interest and greater tolerance in mixed societies. All these factors tend to promote social change by opening more areas of life to decision. In a society where people arequite similar in many ways, there are fewer occasions for people to see the need or the opportunity for change becauseeverything seems to be the same. And although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customary and undisputed.Within a society, social change is also likely to occur morefrequently and more readily in the material aspects of the culture than in the non-material, for example, in technologyrather than in values; in what has been learned later inrather than what was learned early; in the less basic and less emotional aspects of society than in their opposites; in the simple elements rather than in the complex ones;in form rather than in substance; and in elements that are acceptable to the culture rather than in strange elements. Furthermore, social change is easier if it is gradual. For example, it comes readily on human relations on a continuous scale rather than one with sharp dichotomies. This is one reason why change has not come more quicklyto black Americans as compared to other American minorities, because of the sharp difference in appearance between them and their white counterparts.16. Choose the one that you think is the best answer.TEXT AOn August 2, 1492, a three-ship fleet commanded by Christopher Columbus of Genoa, Italy, for the King and Queen of Spain began a voyage west seeking a route to Japan and the Indies. The flagship was this chartered carrack, the Santa Maria, a bulky craft of cranky sailing behavior. However, on Christmas Eve, 1492, Columbus' flagship ran aground on a coral reef off the coast of Haiti and the crew had to abandon ship. Ever since then, many attempts have been made to find and recover the ship.Between 1967 and 1972, Fred Dickson made four explorations of the coral reef in Cap Haitien Bay where Edwin Link had found an anchor that he believed might belong to the flagship. During the first excavation of the coral mound, Dickson and his crew found a layer of ballast stone about two feet below the surface. At the twelve-foot level, they found numerous pieces of wood, copper and brass bolts, iron rods and a few silver nails, presumably from a piece of armor. Probably the most significant find was some pottery that had been buried between 1375 and 1575.In later excavation, Dickson's crew continued hacking away at the coral and mud, digging a trench four or five feet wide and eighteen inches deep. But they found nothing that would either prove or disprove the possibility that the Santa Maria was buried there. In 1972, using sophisticated electronic equipment, Dickson discovered an object about seventy-five feet southeast of the coral reef that he had been exploring. It was about one hundred feet long. That it was a ship was certain. Whether it was the Santa Maria is still an open question.81. The usual reporting period for all the statistics included in the accounts is a year. However, some statistics that make up the balance of payment are published on a more regular monthly and quarterly basis. It reveals how many goods and services one country has exported and imported and whether it has borrowed from or lent money to the rest of the world. Besides, whether the central bank has increases or decreased its reserves of foreign exchange is reported in the statistics. It is important to note that citizenship and residency are not necessarily the same thing from the view point of balance of payment statistics. In addition, for the purpose of balance of payment reporting, the subsidiaries of a multinational are treated as being a resident in the country where they are located even their shares are in fact owned by domestic residents. While the international organizations, such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, United Nations and so on, are treated as being foreign residents even though they may be located in the reporting country.Reported figures are normally in the domestic currency of the reporting country. Collecting statistics on every transaction between domestic and foreign residents is an impossible task. However, the authorities collect their information from the customs authorities, surveys of tourist numbers and expenditures, data on capital inflows and outflows from banks, pension funds, multinationals and investment houses. Information on government expenditures and receipts with foreign residents is obtained from local authorities and central government agencies. Such statistics are based on reliable sampling techniques and thus only an estimate of the actual transactions. With the reported statistics, the International Monetary Fund provides a set of guidelines for the compilation of balance-of-payment statistics published in its Balance of Payment Manual. Besides, the Fund also publishes the balance-of-payment statistics of all its member countries in a standardized format facilitating inter-country comparisons. These are presented in two publications: Balance of Payment Statistics Yearbook and International Financial Statistics. In an accounting sense, balance of payment always balances. Because it is based on the principle of double entry book keeping. Each transaction between a domestic and foreign resident has two sides: a receipt and a payment. And both sides are recorded in the balance-of-payment statistics.86. From the view point of the balance of payment statistics, citizenship and residency are______.A. the same thingB. hardly the same thingC. maybe the same thingD. almost the same thing87. The information needed in the balance of payment can be collected from______.A. foreign authorities, surveys of tourist agencies and expenditures, date on capital inflows and outflows from banks and other sourcesB. native authorities, surveys of travel agencies and data on capital inflows and outflows from banks and other sourcesC. local authorities, surveys of travel agencies and data on capital inflows and outflows from banks and other sourcesD. the customs authorities, surveys of tourist numbers and expenditures, data on capital inflows and outflows from the banks, pension funds, multinationals and investment houses88. IMF publishes the balance-of-payment statistics of all its member countries in a standard format facilitating inter-country comparisons in the book______.A. Balance of Payment Statistics Yearbook and International Financial StatisticsB. Balance of Payment Statistics Yearbook and Balance of Payment ManualC. Balance of Parent Manual and International Financial StatisticsD. Balance of Payment Manual89. An important point about a country's balance-of-payment statistics is that it always balances in a(n)______ sense.A. mathematicalB. accountingC. statisticalD. accountant90. The information of Balance of Payment is collected______.A. at the local levelB. at the country levelC. from other countriesD. both at home and abroadTEXT CThere are the 4P's which help select the best advertising or marketing agency for your marketing campaign. In today's results-oriented business environment, many people miss a very important element in the selection process. The world, even the hard-nosed business world, is made up of people. You can work with the most creative minds, the strongest marketing teams, and maybe even pure geniuses. The reality is, if you simply cannot "get along", it is highly unlikely that you will come up with a winning campaign. Even a mediocre team, inspired by great team spirit, can produce astounding campaigns. The sense of belonging, of ownership, spurs people to greater heights. In an advertising campaign, where emotions, values and vision play such important roles, it is the people who will win through. If people were the only considerations, then the business world will be filled with friends and lovers. Unfortunately, true substance is still a very necessary ingredient in the success of any marketing campaign. This is so important that most of the time, the Proposal, the Big Idea, the Grand Creative have formed the clinch pin of all decisions. This can work. This does work. So, this is an element that must not be overlooked. The proposal should cover not just the creative vision, but all the elements that make the campaign successful. When a great proposal and a nice team of people might be present, however, to ensure the success of a marketing campaign, the proper processes must be in place. You must have a good understanding of the organization, the resource and the way of working of the selected agency. In a major advertising campaign, the number of elements could mean that different teams are involved in different aspects.Price is indeed a consideration. Don't we all wish we had budgets the size of a mountain? Even Bill Gates has to think about budgets. Pay peanuts to get monkeys. Sounds familiar, right? While it is true that the most expensive is not necessarily the best and the cheapest, not always the worst; price is indeed a poor gauge of the potential success of a marketing agency. Work out a realistic budget. Your local4A's (or whatever the association of advertising agencies is called in your neck of the woods) should have a price guide available on request. There you have it: 4P's as promised. With this, you should be in good standing to make an intelligent decision on the marketing agency to be selected. This is by no means the best, the only or even an assured way to make the decision. However, this is a good starting point, and if used prudently can help tremendously. Here's to your next successful marketing or advertising campaign!91. According to the writer, if you cannot get along with the creative people,______.A. you can never win the competitionB. you can achieve independenceC. you have to work by yourselfD. you will remain dependent92. The underlined expression "true substance" (Line 2, Para. 3) means______.A. friends and loversB. success in media plansC. proposals with creative ideasD. decisions and campaigns93. By proper process, the writer means that you must have a good understanding of the organization, the resource and______.A. the costsB. operate modeC. the energyD. the whole team of talents94. The writer thinks that price is______.A. the key to a large budgetB. a local guide to marketingC. the peanut to get monkeysD. a poor means to marketing success95. The 4Ps refers to those EXCEPT______.A. proposalB. peopleC. projectD. priceTEXT DMany people seem to have the wrong image of schools in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with many assuming they are predominantly Islamic-based and tend to "cold shoulder the West". This is very much not the case as schools in the UAE are more open, more accessible and offer one of the highest levels of education in the whole world.Despite the fact that the UAE is predominantly connected with oil and other natural resources, many people seem to overlook the fact that the UAE authorities have invested billions upon billions of dollars into the local education system. The area now has some of the latest technology, the latest education facilities with the latest education techniques very prominent across the education system, which continues to attract overseas interest. While in some areas of the UAE education system there has been a battle between the more traditional and the modern politicians in the region, the area has embraced English as a general teaching language. This has proved to be very beneficial not only for those moving to the UAE from the UK for employment but also those bringing families to the area and also requiring education facilities. This has helped many of those expats moving to the region to settle quicker thereby enabling them to concentrate on other areas of their new life.Anybody who is resident in the UAE is eligible for inclusion in any of the state run schools in the region and those who do not fit the residency criteria can pay to attend。

PART V READING COMPREHENSION [25 MIN]In this section there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer.TEXT AWe can begin our discussion of "population as global issue" with what most persons mean when they discuss "the population problem": too many people on earth and a too rapid increase in the number added each year. The facts are not in dispute, It was quite right to employ the analogy that likened demographic growth to "a long, thin powder fuse that burns steadily and haltingly until it finally reaches the charge and explodes."To understand the current situation, which is characterized by rapid increases in population, it is necessary to understand the history of population trends. Rapid growth is a comparatively recent phenomenon. Looking back at the 8,000 years of demographic history, we find that populations have been virtually stable or growing very slightly for most of human history. For most of our ancestors, life was hard, often nasty, and very short. There was high fertility in most places, but this was usually balanced by high mortality. For most of human history, it was seldom the case that one in ten persons would live past forty, while infancy and childhood were especially risky periods. Often, societies were in clear danger of extinction because death rates could exceed their birthrates. Thus, the population problem throughout most of history was how to prevent extinction of the human race. This pattern is important to notice. Not only does it put the current problems of demographic growth into a historical perspective, but it suggests that the cause of rapid increase in population in recent years is not a sudden enthusiasm for more children, but an improvement in the conditions that traditionally have caused high mortality.Demographic history can be divided into two major periods: a time of long, slow growth which extended from about 8,000 BC.till approximately AD. 1650. In the first period of some 9600 years, the population increased from some 8 million to 500 million in 1650. Between 1650 and the present, the population has increased from 500 million to more than 4 billion. And it is estimated that by the year 2000 there will be 6.2 billion people throughout the world. One way to appreciate this dramatic difference in such abstract numbers is to reduce the time frame to something that is more manageable. Between 8000BC and 1650, an average of only 50,000 persons was being added annually to the world's population each year. At present, this number is added every six hours. The increase is about 80,000,000 persons annually.1.Which of the following demographic growth pattern is most suitable for the long thin powder fuse analogy?A.A virtually stable or slightly decreasing period and then a sudden explosion of population.B.A slow growth for a long time and then a period of rapid, dramatic increase.C.Too many people on earth and a few rapid increase in the number added each year.D.A long period when death rates exceeds birthrates and then a short period with higher fertility and lowermortality.2.During the first period of demographic history, societies were often in danger of extinction because .A.only one in ten persons could live past 40.B.there was higher mortality than fertility in most places.C.it was too dangerous to have babies due to the poor conditions.D.our ancestors had little enthusiasm for more children.3.Which statement is true about population increase?A.There might be an increase of 2.2 billion persons from now to the year 2000.B.About 50,000 babies are born every six hours at present.C.Between 8000 BC and the present, the population increase is about 80,000,000 persons each year.D.The population increased faster between 8000BC and 1650 than between 1650 and the present.4.The author of the passage intends to .A.warn people against the population explosion in the near future.pare the demographic growth pattern in the past with that after 1650.C.find out the cause for rapid increase in population in recent years.D.present us a clear and complete picture of the demographic growth.5.The word "demographic" in the first paragraph means .A.statistics of human.B.surroundings study.C.accumulation of human.D.development of human.TEXT BChinese Americans today have higher incomes than Americans in general and higher occupational status. The Chinese have risen to this position despite some of the harshest discrimination and violence faced by any immigrants to the United States in the history of this country. Long confined to a narrow range of occupations they succeeded in those occupations and then spread out into other areas in later years, when opportunities finally opened up for them. Today much of the Chinese prosperity is due to the simple fact that they work more and have more (usually better) education than others. Almost one out of five Chinese families has three or more income earners compared to one out of thirteen for Puerto Ricans, one out of ten among American Indians, and one out of eight among Whites. When the Chinese advantages in working and educational are held constant, they have no advantage over other Americans. That is in a Chinese Family with a given number of people working and with a given amount of education by the head of the family, the income is not only about average for such families, and offer a little less than average. While Chinese Americans as a group are prosperous and well-educated Chinatowns are pockets of poverty, and illiteracy is much higher among the Chinese than among Americans in general. Those paradoxes are due to sharp internal differences. Descendants of the Chinese Americans who emigrated long ago from Toishan Province have maintained Chinese values and have added acculturation to American society with remarkable success. More recent Hong Kong Chinese are from more diverse cultural origins, and acquired western values and styles in Hong Kong, without having acquired the skills to proper and support those aspirations in the American economy. Foreign-born Chinese men in the United States are one-fourth lower incomes than native-born Chinese even though the foreign-born have been in the United States an average of seventeen years. While the older Hong Kong Chinese work tenaciously to sustain and advance themselves, the Hong Kong Chinese youths often react with resentment and antisocial behavior, including terrorism and murder. The need to maintain tourism in Chinatown causes the Chinese leaders to mute or downplay these problems as much as possible.6.According to the passage, today, Chinese Americans owe their prosperity to .A.their diligence and better education than others.B.their support of American government.C.their fight against discriminations.D.advantages in working only.7.The passage is mainly concerned with .A.chinese Americans today.B.social status of Chinese Americans today.C.incomes and occupational status of Chinese Americans today.D.problems of Chinese Americans today.8.Chinatowns are pockets of poverty, as is probably associated with .A.most descendants of Chinese Americans are rebelling.B.most descendants of Chinese Americans are illiterate.C.sharp internal difference between Chinese coming from different cultural backgrounds.D.only a few Chinese Americans are rich.9.Which of the following statements is not true according to this articleA.As part of the minority, Chinese Americans are still experiencing discrimination in American today.B.Nowadays, Chinese Americans are working in wider fields.C.Foreign-born Chinese earn lower income than native-born Chinese Americans with the similar advantagesin the U.S.D.None of the above.10.According to the author, which of the following can best describe the older Hong Kong Chinese and theyoungerA.Tenacious; rebellion.B.Conservative; open-minded.C.Out-of-date; fashionable.D.Obedient; disobedient.TEXT CA controversy erupted in the scientific community in early 1998 over the use of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid ) fingerprinting in criminal investigations. And, in April, a National Academy of Sciences called for strict standards and system of accreditation for DNA testing laboratories.11.efore DNA fingerprinting is used, suspects .A.would have to leave their fingerprints for further investigationsB.would have to submit evidence for their innocenceC.could easily escape conviction of guiltD.cold be convicted of guilt as well12.DNA fingerprinting can be unreliable when .A.the methods used for blood- cell calculation are not accurateB.two different individuals of the same ethnic group may have the same DNA fingerprinting patternC.a match is by chance left with fingerprints that happen to belong to two different individualsD.two different individuals leave two DNA samples.13.To geneticists like Lewontin and Hartl, the current method .A.is not so convincing as to exclude the likelihood that two DNA samples can never come from twoindividualsB.is arguable because two individuals of the same ethnic group are likely to have the same DNA pattern.C.Is not based on adequate scientific theory of geneticsD.Is theoretically contradictory to what they have been studying14.The attitude of the Federal Bereau of Investigation shows that .A.enough data are yet to be collected form various ethnic groups to confirm the unlikelihood of two DNAsamples coming from two individual membersB.enough data of DNA samples should be collected to confirm that only DNA samples form the same personcan matchC.enough data are yet to be collected from various ethnic groups to determine the likelihood of two differentDNA samples coming form the same personD.additional samples from various ethnic groups should be collected to determine that two DNA samples areunlikely to come from the same person15.National Academy of Sciences holds the stance that .A.DNA testing should be systematizedB.Only authorized laboratories can conduct DNA testingC.The academy only is authorized to work out standards for testingD.The academy has the right to accredit laboratories for DNA testingTEXT DMost of us are taught to pay attention to what is said—the words. Words do provide us with some information, but meanings are derived from so many other sources that it would hinder our effectiveness as a partner to a relationship to rely too heavily on words alone. Words are used to describe only a small part of the many ideas we associate with any given message. Sometimes we can gain insight into some of those associations if we listen for more than words. We don't always say what we mean or mean what we say. Sometimes our words don't mean anything except " I'm letting off some steam. I don't really want you to pay close attention to what I'm saying. Just pay attention to what I'm feeling." Mostly we mean several things at once. A person wanting to purchase a house says to the current owner, "This step has to be fixed before I'll buy." The owner says, " It's been like that for years." Actually, the step hasn't been like that for years, but the unspoken message is: " I don't want to fix it. We put up with it. Why can't you?" The search for a more expansive view of meaning can be developed of examining a message in terms of who said it, when it occurred, the related conditions or situation, and how it was said. When a message occurs can also reveal associated meaning. Let us assume two couples do exactly the same amount of kissing and arguing. But one couple always kisses after an argument and the other couple always argues after a kiss. The ordering of the behaviors may mean a great deal more than the frequency of the behavior.A friend's unusually docile behavior may only be understood by noting that it was preceded by situations that required an abnormal amount of assertiveness. Some responses may be directly linked to a developing pattern of responses and defy logic. For example, a person who says "No!" to a serials of charges like "You're dumb," "You're lazy," and "You're dishonest," may also say "No!" and try to justify his or her response if the next statement is "And you're good looking."We would do well to listen for how messages are presented. The words, "If sure has been nice to have you over," can be said with emphasis and excitement or ritualistically. The phrase can be said once or repeated several times. And the meanings we associate with the phrase will change accordingly. Sometimes if we say something infrequently it assumes more importance; sometimes the more we say something the less importance it assumes.16.Effective communication is rendered possible between two conversing partners, if .A.they use proper words to carry their ideas.B.they both speak truly of their own feelings.C.they try to understand each other's ideas beyond words.D.they are capable of associating meaning with their words.17."I'm letting off some steam" in paragraph 1 means .A.I'm just calling your attention.B.I'm just kidding.C.I'm just saying the opposite.D.I'm just giving off some sound.18.The house-owner's example shows that he actually means .A.the step has been like that for years.B.he doesn't think it necessary to fix the step.C.the condition of the step is only a minor fault.D.the cost involved in the fixing should be shared.19.Some responses and behaviors may appear very illogical, but are justifiable if .A.linked to an abnormal amount of assertiveness.B.seen as one's habitual pattern of behavior.C.taken as part of an ordering sequence.D.expressed to a series of charges.20.The word "ritualistically" in the last paragraph equals something done .A.without true intention.B.light-heartedly.C.in a way of ceremony.D.with less emphasis.答案:1-5 ABADA 6-10 ACCCA 11-15 CBABB 16-20 DBABC。

When highly gifted students in any domain talk about what was important to the development of their abilities, they are far more likely to mention their families than their schools or teachers. Many gifted people attributed their success______.A.mainly to parental help and their education at home.B.both to school instruction and to their rparents' coaching.C.more to their parents' encouragement than to school training.D.less to their systematic education than to their talent.PASSAGE TWOA controversy erupted in the scientific community in early 1998 over the use of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid ) fingerprinting in criminal investigations. And, in April, a National Academy of Sciences called for strict standards and system of accreditation for DNA testing laboratories.44. Before DNA fingerprinting is used, suspects____.A. would have to leave their fingerprints for further investigationsB. would have to submit evidence for their innocenceC. could easily escape conviction of guiltD. could be convicted of guilt as well45. The attitude of the Federal Bereau of Investigation shows that ____.A. enough data are yet to be collected form various ethnic groups to confirm the unlikelihoodof two DNA samples coming from two individual membersB. enough data of DNA samples should be collected to confirm that only DNA samples formthe same person can matchC. enough data are yet to be collected from various ethnic groups to determine the likelihoodof two different DNA samples coming form the same personD. additional samples from various ethnic groups should be collected to determine that twoDNA samples are unlikely to come from the same person46. It was easy to see by the newspapers, that if ever they had known what it was to bear a good name, that time had gone by. -- During the rest of the campaign this paper never referred to me in any other way than as "the infamous perjurer Twain."]Next came the "Gazette," with this:W ANTED TO KNOW. -- Will the new candidate for Governor deign to explain to certain of his fellow-citizens (who are suffering to vote for him!) the little circumstance of his cabin-mates in Montana losing small valuables from time to time, until at last, these things having been invariably found on Mr. Twain's person or in his "trunk" (newspaper he rolled his traps in), they felt compelled to give him a friendly admonition for his own good, and so tarred and feathered him and rode him on a rail, and then advised him to leave a permanent vacuum in the place he usually occupied in the camp. TEXT CThe year 1400 opened with more peacefulness than usual in England. Only a few months before, Richard II, weak, wicked, and treacherous, had been deposed(废黜),and Herry IV declared king in his stead. But it was only a seeming peacefulness, lasting for but a little while; for though King Herry proved himself a just and a merciful man——as justice and mercy went with the men of iron of those days——and though he did not care to shed blood needlessly, there were many noble families who had been benefited by King Richard during his reign, and who had lost somewhat of their power and prestige from the coming in of the new king.Among these were a number of great lords who had been degraded from their former titles and estates, from which degradation King Richard had lifted them. They planned to fall upon King Herryand his followers and to massacre(屠杀)them during a great tournament(中世纪的马上⽐武⼤会) which was being held at Oxford. And they might have succeeded had not one of their own members betrayed them. But Herry did not appear at the lists; whereupon, knowing that he had been lodging at Windsor with only a few attendants, the conspirators marched there against him. In the meantime, the king had been warned of the plot, so that instead of finding him in the royal castle, they discovered through their scouts that he had hurried to London, and that he was marching against them at the head of a considerable army. So nothing was left but flight. One and another, they were all caught and some killed. Those few who found friends faithful and bold enough to afford them shelter dragged those friends down in their own ruin.72. Why did the nobles wish to kill Herry?A. Herry had taken away power given to them by Richard.B. Herry was weak, wicked, and treacherous.C. Herry had needlessly killed members of their families.D. Herry had killed King Richard.73. How did King Herry find out about the plot?A. His scouts discovered it.B. He saw the conspirators coming.C. One of the conspirators told him.D. He found a copy of the conspirators’ plan.74. What does the author seem to think of King Herry?A. He was the best king England had ever had.B. He was unfair and cowardly.C. He was just as evil as King Richard.D. He was a better ruler than King Richard.TEXT DAlthough the United States cherishes the tradition it is a nation of small towns and wide open spaces, only one in every eight Americans now lives on a farm. The recent population trend has been a double one, toward both urbanization and suburbanization. Metropolitan areas have grown explosively in the past decade, and nearly half this increase has been in the suburbs. With the rapid growth of cities has come equally rapid decentralization. The flight of Americans from the central city to the suburbs constitutes one of the greatest migrations of modern times; quite residential sections outside cities have become conglomerations of streets, split-level houses, and shopping centers. This spurt of suburban expansion, however, does not alter the basic fact that the United States has become one of the most urban nations on the face of the earth. Census Bureau figures show that the rural population has been shrinking steadily since 1830. When the United States became a nation it had no large cities at all; today some fifty cities have population of more than 258,000. Mammoth complexes of cities are developing in the area of the East Coast and the east north-central states, on the Pacific and Gulf coasts, and near the shores of the Great Lakes. Some sociologists now regard the entire 600-mile stretch between Boston and Washington D.C.——an area holding a fifth of the country’s population——as one vast city or, as they call it, megalopolis.75. The author says that trends are toward the____.A. growth of cities and shrinking of suburban areasB. growth of both rural and suburban areasC. growth of urban and suburban areasD. growth of suburban areas and shrinking of cities76. Decentralization is best defined as ____.A. movement from the central city to rural areasB. movement from the central city to the suburbsC. disorderly expansion of the central cityD. shrinking of metropolitan77. One aspect of the recent population trend is the____.A. development of complexes of citiesB. increasingly great distance between citiesC. transformation of cities into suburbsD. growth of many small townsTEXT EA need for beauty, lightness, corrosion resistance, or other specific properties must be present before plastic can be considered as competitors of brick, window glass, cement, cast iron, or steel, since volumetric prices are so low for the last substance and for wood. It is not particularly unfortunate that plastics do not appear economical for every use. There is no reason why industry should want to replace wood, brick, concrete, and metals when the latter are adequate and inexpensive. Too much has been written about the coming “Plastics and Light Metal Age,” which is prophesized as the successor to the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age. In the historical sequence of these earlier periods, there is logic in the quantitative sense; one age gave way to another when the use of a new material exceeded in quantity that of its predecessor. For the plastics and light metals, however, a different picture presents itself; less than 3,000,000 tons of all these materials are being produced annually, while steel production exceeded 90,000,000 tons last year and will probably not recede to less than 60,000,000 tons for many years. This is still the Iron Age or rather the Steel Age.78. The writer considers that the Bronze Age succeeded the Stone Age because____.A. there was a scarcity of wood and other building materialsB. bronze was less expensive than stoneC. stone was no longer availableD. more bronze than stone came into use79. The writer regards the change to a “Plastic and Light Metal Age” in the near future as____.A. necessaryB. desirableC. improbableD. logical80. The title that best expresses the idea of this passage is____.A. New Uses for PlasticsB. How One Age Succeeds AnotherC. Advantages of PlasticsD. Limitations on the Use of Plastics。
