Unit 5 Nelson Mandela-Writing
Once the writing is completed, swap it with a partner and improve each other’s work. Remember to check grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Then rewrite the passage. We will make assessment on your writing.
Look at the life of Nelson Mandela and find out what happened to him in 1999. In pairs discuss what qualities make Mandela a great man. Then you can begin organise your discussion.
S1: I’m not so sure. He was in favour of violence and that is not the behaviour of a great man, is it? S2: True. However, he explained at his trial why he encouraged the ANC to become violent. He said that there was no other way for them to attack the unfair laws.
Let me think about it!
Before writing you can follow these steps:
Make a list of the personal qualities you think Mandela has shown in his life. Put them together to compare your lists with another group. This will make sure that you do not overlook an important aspect of Mandela’s life. Then begin to organise your writing. Put your ideas into any order that seems sensible and add the reasons or details to the ideas.

Make sure that you give reasons for your opinions. If you are writing about Mandela’s qualities you can concentrate on two or three. If you are describing his life then you should group his life into periods: his studies, work for the ANC and its results, fight against anti-black laws, life in prison, after being released from Robben Island. Then you can either describe one period in your own words or describe the development in his life and ideas.

S1: Let me try.Although Mr.Mandela was one of the leaders who called on black people to blow up some government buildings,he had no choice but to do that.He said they broke the law in a way which was peaceful.Only when this was not allowed did they decide to answer violence with violence.
T: So you mean the government forced him to break the law, so it is necessary to set him free.Good.Another reason?
S2:In my opinion,it is natural for Mr.Mandela to encourage violence against anti-black law.At that time, there were a lot of laws stopping the blacks’rights and progress. The black people reached a stage where they have almost no rights at all.Black people had no vote and could not choose who ruled them. The parts of town where they were sent to live were decided by white people. They could not get jobs they wanted. The places where they were sent to live were the poorest areas in South Africa. No one could grow food there. As a matter of fact, black people did not like violence. But they knew it was to realize their dream of making black and white people equal.

ELIAS’ STORY
My name is Elias. I am a poor black worker in South Africa. The time when I first met Nelson Mandela was a very difficult period of my life. I was twelve years old. It was in 1952 and Mandela was the black lawyer to whom I went for advice. He offered guidance to poor black people on their legal problems. He was generous with his time, for which I was grateful.
“…we were put into a position in which we had either to accept we were less important or fight the government. We chose to attack the laws. We first broke the law in a way which was peaceful; when this was not allowed…only then did we decide to answer violence with violence. As a matter of fact, I do not like violence…but in 1963 I helped him blow up some government buildings. It was very dangerous because if I was caught I could be put in prison. But I was happy to help because I knew it would help us achieve our dream of making black and white people equal.

高一英语Unit 5 Nelson Mandela Writing 说课稿
高一英语Unit 5 Nelson Mandela Writing 说课稿Hello, everyone. Today I’m very pleased to have an opportunity to talk about some of my teaching ideas. My topic is the last part of Unit 5 Nelson Mandela .That’s speaking and writing . It is made up of four parts.Part 1 My understanding of this lessonThis lesson is the last one of the whole unit and it’s also the most difficult part for students to acquire. That’s the reason why some teachers and students avoid writing part in our teaching and learning procedure. By studying 5 classes of this unit, Ss can master the basic language points, useful expressions, attributive clauses and get improved their reading ability. So we can make them combine all these skills. At the same time, we should get the students to know how to give a speech. The Ss should do some reading, speaking and writing, too. Of course, the Ss should receive some moral education. For example, let them know some important qualities for the hero, as for strong, work-hard, warm-heart and so on.Teaching aims:1. Knowledge aim: Understand the speaking part and write a birthday speech.2. Ability aim: Improve their speaking and writing ability..3. Emotional aim: Make the Ss learn the good qualities from the hero and don’t give up when they get in trouble. Key points / Teaching important points: How to write a birthday speech for Nelson.Teaching difficult points:1. How to organize the sentences to describe the whole life of Nelson Mandela in order.2. How to use attributive clauses to make sentences clean and clear.Something about the Ss:1. The Ss have known something about Nelson.2. They are lack of vocabulary and grammar.3. They seldom use English to express themselves and communicate with others. And they haven’t confidence to give a speech in public. They don’t like to show themselves.4. Some Ss are not active in the class because they are afraid of making mistakes.Part 2 My teaching theories, methods and aidsA famous female educator Mentessori once said, “tell me , I will forget; show me , I may remember; involve me, I will understand”Before dealing with this lesson, I’ll do my best to carry out the following theories: Make the Ss the real masters in class while the teacher himself acts as director;Combine the language structures with the language functions; Let the students receive some moral education while they are learning the English language. Teaching methods:Watch-and-listen activity; Task- based teaching and learning; Pair work or individual work method ; Role PlayTeaching aids: 1. a crown 2. multimedia 3. the blackboardPart 3. Teaching steps / proceduresStep 1: Presentation1. Talk about Nelson Mandela.2. Make a dialogue about him.Step 2: Speaking1. When was ANC Youth League formed?2. Why was the law office closed by government?3. Why was he sentenced to five year hard labour in 1962?Step 3: Discussion:If you were Nelson Mandela, what should you say at your 91st birthday party?Step 4: writing :Write a short speech of Nelson’s birthday and then show it in front of the class.Step5: HomeworkWrite your own birthday speech. After finishing the composition, ask your partner to read it and give his/her comments.Part 4. Blackboard writing。

In 1944, he founded the ANC Youth League to call o n people to struggle for their rights to vote. In 1952, he opened a law office to help the poor black people in Johannesburg on their problems. The black people loved him.In 1962, Mandela encouraged people to use violence against anti-black laws to get th eir rights, so he was sentenced to 5 years hard labor. Here are some reasons why I think he should be free.First, it is natural for Mr. Mandela to encourage violence against anti-black law. At t hat time, there were a lot of laws stopping the blacks’ rights and progress. The black peo ple reached a stage where they had almost no rights at all. Black people had no vote and could not choose who ruled them. The parts of town where they were sent to live were decided by white people. They could not get jobs they wanted. The places where they w ere sent to live were the poorest areas in South Africa. No one could grow food there. A s a matter of fact, black people did not like violence. But they knew it was to realize th eir dream of making black and white people equal.Second, although Mr. Mandela was one of the leaders who called on black people to blow up some government buildings, he had no choice but to do that. He said they brok e the law in a way which was peaceful. Only when this was not allowed did they decide to answer violence with violence. Finally, it is not a good way of solving the problem to put Mr. Mandela in prison.
