They can't play favorites or punish students for no reason. They have to enforce the rules firmly but kindly for everyone. Good teachers are consistent and even-handed so students know exactly what's expected of them. My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Kim, was extremely fair. She had a few basic rules that she stuck to no matter what, and she never bent them for certain students. If someone broke a rule, they faced the same consequence every time. It made her class feel very safe because we knew she would treat us all fairly.Another quality of an excellent teacher is that they really care about their students' well-being, not just their academic performance. Good teachers check in on how you're feeling and try to help if you're struggling with an issue at home or being bullied at school. They advocate for students who need extra support or services. My second grade teacher, Mr. Sanchez, was like a second dad to me. When my parents were getting divorced, he could see I was having a hard time. He let me stay inside with him at recess when I felt sad and just needed some quiet time. He reminded me that lots of kids go through divorces and that it wasn't my fault. When a student was being unkind, she would gently explain why that behaviorwas hurtful and encourage us to apologize and treat each other with compassion.
