Mastering one and then reinventingyourself after moving halfway across the world is another story, but AbigailFernandes is doing just that. The 17-year-old student was a good shooter whilestudying in Britain. But when she moved back to Hong Kong, China, life suddenlyfelt a little empty without the eight hours a week of shooting training she’dbecome used to.“I decidedto go for a sport that might help me get fitter and allow me to protect myselfin the future,” she explains. With its high intensity exercise, and chances tobuild strength, boxing fit the bill perfectly.“Boxingteaches you patience, but best of all, a hunger to learn,” she said. “Thevalues and lessons the sport teaches you can all be used in both yourday-to-day life and education.”Now, shehas been boxing for just a little more than three years and loves thechallenges that this sport offers. She trains 10 hours a week with her coachJim, who has helped her to grow as an athlete and a person.Though shehas made great progress, she thinks being able to deal with hits in the ring isher biggest challenge. “When you get hit in the ring, it’s so easy to burstinto tears and give up, but this gets you nowhere,” she says. “I want to beable to take hits and accept them. These are skills that can only be learnedthrough countless sessions of sparring . The firsttime I sparred I cried, so I’m proud of myself for never turning down asparring session,” she says.Abigailsays that though her training is pretty boring, she’ll keep practicing as shelooks for a competition where she can put her skills to the test.“I have along way to go,” she says, “but I want to learn everything this sport has tooffer!”(1)When did Abigail start boxing?A . When she studied in Britain.B . Before she became a shooter.C . After she came back to China.D . While she traveled half the world.(2)Why did Abigail decide to box?A . To protect her family.B . Do teenagers simply love taking all risks muchmore than adults? A recent study suggests otherwise.Scientistsdesigned a simple experiment involving 33 teenagers and three other age groups. In the experiment, the researchers tried to distinguish between two verydifferent kinds of risk-taking. The first they called a willingness to takeknown risks and the second theycalled a willingness to take unknown risks .The studyoffered participants the opportunity to play two kinds of games. They had thechance to win money, with one game offering a known risk and the other offeringan unknown risk. On each round of the game, eachparticipant had to choosebetween taking a sure $5 and known or unknown risks of winning a lot more. Ifon one particular round they had picked the $5 for sure choice, then they got$5. But if on that round they had chosen to take a risk, the rules of the gamewill determine whether or not they had won. If they did win, they went homewith between $8 and $125. And, of course, if they lost, they went home withnothing. What thescientists found was really quite surprising. It turned out that the averageteenager was very hesitant when risks were known—more careful than collegestudents or parents-aged adults, and about as careful as grandparent-agedadults. This means that when the risks were known, teenagers were not risky intheir behavior at all. Only when the risks were unclear did teenagers choosethem more often than other groups. Under those kinds of conditions, they weremuch more willing to take a risk than any other group. So, whatdoes all of this mean? The research suggests that adults should probably focusmore energy on trying to educate teenagers about risks than limiting them.Teenagers who understand the risks associated with a decision are more likelyto be careful in their behavior.(1)This experiment was carried out byA . dividing the teens into three groupsB . comparing the reactions to different risksC . giving equal amount of awards to the participantsD . observing the emotional changes of the teenager(2)When facing known risks, teenagers tended to be ________.A . ambitiousB . cautiousC . anxiousD . curious(3)Which group in the study were more likely to take unknown risks?A . Teenagers.B . College students.C . Parent-aged adults.D . Grandparent-aged adults.(4)According to the study, parents should focus on ________.A . guaranteeing children to be carefulB . setting age limits on dangerous activitiesC . respecting teens to make their own choicesD . guiding teens to learn more about the effect of risks二、任务型阅读(共5题;每小题2分,满分10分)4.

1.He is the only one of the students who _____ a winner of scholarship five times up to now.A. isB. areC. have beenD. has been【答案】D【解析】【详解】考查现在完成时和主谓一致。

句意:他是唯一一位三年奖学金获得者的学生。

句中的先行词为the only one,在定语从句中作主语,故谓语动词用单数。

根据句中的时间状语for three years,故时态用现在完成时。

故D正确。

2.Though the series of books is a bit too dear (昂贵), it is worthwhile _____________.A. to be boughtB. buyingC. to buyD. buying it【答案】D【解析】【详解】考查非谓语动词。

句意:尽管这套书很昂贵,但是值得买。

本句为worthwhile 的用法,it is worthwhile doing sth或者sth is worthwhile to be done,结合语境可知,本句it为形式主语,而不是真正主语,故用第一个结构,故选D。

know their paths quite well.If anything new, such as stone or wood,is put in the path, the rats won’t go near it at first as they are too frightened. It will take them many days to get over the fear. They are also frightened to go near a place that they know, where something has been taken away.If a path goes around arock, the rats follow the same path around the rock each time.If the rock is taken away, they will still run round the place where the rock was! They won’t cross the empty place which is now open to them, even though it would be quicker.Rats will always keep away from anything unusual to them. That’s why they won’t eat poison on the first or second night. They usually won’t go anywhere near it for about four days until they get used to being there.Even then they only eat a little at a time.If people want to kill rats with poison, all they have to do is to leave it out for a few days.Once the rats have got used to it,they will eat it,and die.56.This passage mainly tells popular, usually because it promises people that they will lose a lot of weight overnight.Although dieters may really show weight loss from a fad diet, they will almost certainly get back the weight if their usual eating habits (习惯) remain unchanged. Moreover, fad diets continuously call for special products of questionable value or for “health foods”that may cost twice as much as supermarket foods.Worse yet, certain fad diets don’t include nutrients (营养) good for health.People have been known to become very ill as a result of following medically unhealthy diets. The worse fact of fad wealth,” wise people say.Y ou can’t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach,if you complain of a bad cough,if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold,or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure,I think you should go to the doctor’s.The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed.After that he will advise some treatment,or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.Speaking about doctor’s advice,I can’t help telling you a funny story. An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill.He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest.He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule,“Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again,he shouldn’t smoke more than one cigarette a day.A month later the gentleman came into the doctor’s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he_had_never_felt_a_healthier_man.“But you know, doctor,” he said,“it’s not easy to begin smoking at my age.”64.The writer thinks doctor’s advice.DMore to dinner than just foodY ou are not the first one in your class to hear the complaints that teenagers nowadays are unruly (难管的) and uncommunicative. And it is not just your parents’remarks.Teachers in the UK also find it difficult to communicate with their students. And now they are asking:why?According to a recent survey in Britain, the erosion (消磨) of family life leaves parents less time to teach key social skills such as listening to others, saying “please” and “thank you” and taking turns.“One of the most important factors has been the loss of the family meal, which has reduced family conversation,” said John Dunford, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders.Dunford believes family meals are a good chance to stay connected. It’s an emotional andmutual bond based on warmth and trust.“Family meals are a time for sharing thoughts and ideas and problem-solving together,”he says.“Having meals together means parents and teenagers can find the delicate (微妙的) balance between staying connected and letting go.”Dunford also criticized celebrity worshipping (明星崇拜),which makes teaching “more difficult than it has ever been”.Schools are based on the connection between hard work, passing exams and getting a good job. However, worshipping celebrities makes teenagers believe social advancement can be gained through the purchase of a lottery ticket rather than hard work.“Y oung people forget that high-earning footballers have to train incredibly hard, that successful pop singers have to practice for hours and I think it makes the job of the school more difficult,” says Nick Seaton of the Campaign for Real Education.68.All of the following contributed to the fact that teenagers nowadays are difficult to communicate with EXCEPT________.A.parents’less involvement in teaching their children key social skillsB.an addiction to online gamesC.the loss of family mealsD.celebrity worshipping69.Which of the following is NOT the reason for the importance of family meals according to the text?A.They are good time for teenagers to learn social skills.B.They provide a good opportunity to share thoughts and ideas.C.Family members can take the time to enjoy TV programs togetherD.Family members can solve problems together during this period of time.70.What can we infer from Paragraph 6?A.Celebrity worshipping makes teenagers believe they can achieve success through good luck.B.Celebrity worshipping makes teenagers take an interest in buying lottery tickets.C.Celebrities can inspire teenagers to fulfill their dreams through hard work.D.Celebrities who buy a lottery ticket set a bad example to teenagers.第Ⅱ卷(非选择题,共35分)第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)Nowadays people use different ways to communicate with each other. And does one always tell the truth when he or she talks with the other on the phone? Or does one sometimes tell a lie when writing an e-mail or giving an instant message? Recent research has found that communication technologies are far from equal when it comes to conveying the truth. The first study, made by Jeff Hancock of Cornell University in Ithaca,New Y ork, to compare honesty across a range of communication media has found that people are twice as likely to tell lies in phone conversations as they are in e-mails. The fact that e-mails are automatically recorded—and can come back to trouble you—appears to be the key to the finding.Jeff Hancock made an investigation by asking 30 students to keep a communication diary for a week. In it they noted the number of conversations or e-mail exchanges they had lasting more than 10 minutes, and how many lies they told. Hancock then worked out the number of lies per conversation for each medium. He found that lies made up 14 per cent of e-mails,21 per cent of instant messages, 27 per cent of face-to-face interactions and an astonishing 37 per cent of phone calls. His results, to be presented at the conference on human computer interaction in V ienna, Austria, in April, have surprised psychologists. Some expected e-mailers to be the biggest liars, reasoning that because the unreal condition makes people uncomfortable, the detachment of e-mailing would make it easier to lie. Others expected people to lie more in face-to-face exchanges because people are more practiced at that form of communication. But Hancock says it is also very important and effective whether a conversation is being recorded and could be reread, and whether it occurs in real time. People appear to be afraid to lie when they know that they will be responsible for what they have said in the conversation, he says. This is why fewer lies appear in e-mails than on the phone.People are also more likely to lie in real time—in an instant message or phone call, say—than if they have time to think of a response, says Hancock. He found many lies are sudden or immediate responses to demands that they don’t expect, such as “Do you like my dress?”Hancock hopes his research will help business companies work out the best ways for their employees to communicate. For instance, the phone might be the best medium for selling their products where employees are encouraged to stretch the truth. But when giving results, work assessment, where honesty is regarded as more important than others, it might be best by usingJohn非常喜欢中国的民间艺术二人转,请你根据下列要词左右的电子邮件,向他介绍当前走红的二人转明星小沈阳的情况。
