They tried to live simple lives so that they could have time for what was most important. They didn’t busy themselves buying a bigger house, because that would mean working harder to pay the monthly mortgage(按揭贷款),working overtime or taking second job. Who would go running with me then? Who would read stories to me?They didn’t burden themselves with buying an expensive car because that would mean worrying about installment(分期付款) bills. Besides, walking to the shopping centre every Saturday afternoon with me gave my dad his needed exercise, and made me feel so special. One of my heart’s delights was seeing Dad and Mom in their bedroom at night, after our nightly family prayer. The lights were turned off, and I’d see the figure of my father seated on his old chair and Mom standing behind him, gently massaging(按摩) his shoulders. I’d hear them talk about what happened during their day. Even as a child, I sensed their quiet pleasure in being together. My question today: Could they have done this rich ritual(仪式) each night and nourished(滋润) their marriage if they had been busy paying for expensive clothes for themselves or their kids, or if they had been worrying about monthly bills for new hi-tech equipment? I don’t think so. And I’ve made a choice: I don’t want that of life either.( ) 41. Which of the following is TRUE about the author’s family?A. There were six people in the family.B. They decided to buy a bigger house.C. They lived an easy and happy life.D. They had a second-hand car.( ) 42. What did the parents regularly do with the author?A. They wrote stories together.B. They read newspapers together.C. They regularly took exercise together.D. They went shopping together each day.( ) 43. The author believed that his/her parents’ happiness was due toA. their attitude towards lifeB. their love for each otherC. their common interestsD. their ability to communicate with each other( ) 44. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author .A. go t bored with his/her parents’ way of educating kidsB. was influenced by his/her parents’ lifestyleC. didn’t want to follow his/her parents’ adviceD. didn’t want to live the same life as his/her parentsBThe CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs’ story about deathWhen I was 17, I read a quote that went something like : ―If you live each day as if it were your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.‖ It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 ye ars, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, ―If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?‖Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered(遇到) to help me make the big choices in life.About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that was incurable, and that I would live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor’ code for preparing yourself to die.I lived with that diagnosis all day. I was completely in despair. Later that evening I had another biopsy(活组织检查) and my wife told me that tumor(肿瘤) turned out to be curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now. This was the closest I’ v been to facing death. To tell the truth, no one wants to die. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. It clears out the old to make room for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.Your time is so limited that you shouldn’t waste it repeating someone else’ life. Don’t be trapped by dogma—which is living with the results of other people’ thinking. Don’t let the noiseof others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart. It somehow already knows what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.( ) 45.

"The researchers measured the presence of the sleep - promoting hormone( 荷尔蒙) in teenagers' saliva( 唾液) at different time of the day. They learned that the hormone levels rise later at night than they do in children than adults - and remain at a higher level later in the morning. Measuring the hormone in the saliva is a good way to show that most teens have sleep problems, but changing schools schedules isn’t the best way to do fix this. Most people arguing against changing school schedules would say that it would only cause teens to stay up and wake up later, thus leaving them with the same problem. The biggest problem schools would come across from changing their schedules would be the after school and job conflicts students and teacher would meet. “Teachers reported that students were more alert, and research showed that after - school sports and jobs would suffer. Students in that area might have been able to deal with less time for jobs and sports somehow, but some of them have practice and earlier plans that would become conflicted if this change were to occur. Most students rarely have time to play a sport and do homework before 9 or 10 o'clock. Opening schools later may have worked for some areas, but the reality is often very different.72.

In the United States, the social value of a college education has long been taken for granted. American parents expect their children to attend college, and college graduates have become the norm in the professional job market. Among the ten fastest-growing occupations, eight require an associate’s degree o r higher. In fact, experts predict that by 2008, about 90% of the fastest-growing jobs will require post-secondary education or vocational training. However, not all high school students are prepared for college-level work. Even those students who are academically prepared for college may not be able to afford it. Rising tuition (学费) has made college a luxury that is out of reach for many middle-income families. But cost is not the only reason a high school graduate might decide notto attend college. A university education is not appropriate or necessary forall careers. For example, vocational school or on-the-job training is often a better option for careers in the trades (工艺行业) or for those who want tobe business owners or operators. Some people simply choose not to go to college because they do not want to further their education in an academic setting. 1. According to the passage, what has become the norm in the professional job market in the United States?答案:College graduates.2. What does the author say about the fastest-growing occupations?答案:Eight out of ten of the fastest-growing occupations require a degree or higher education.3. Why do many high school graduates decide not to attend college?答案:The cost of college is one reason, and not all careers require a university education.

The score was two to one, my son’s team in the lead. Parents surrounded the playground, offering encouragement. With less than ten seconds remaining, the ball suddenly rolled in front of my son’s teammate, Mickey O’Donnel. With shout of “kick it!” echoing across the playground, Mickey turned around and gave it everything he had. All around me the crowd erupted. O’ Donnel had scored. Then there was silence. Mickey had scored all right, but in the wrong goal, ending the game in a tie. For a moment there was a total bush. You see, Mickey has Down’s syndrome(唐氏综合症) and for him there is no such thing as a wrong goal. All goals were celebrated by a joyous hug from Mickey. He had even been known to hug the opposing players when they scored. The silence was finally broken when Mickey, his face filled with joy, hugged my son tightly and shouted, “I scored! I scored. Everybody won! Everybody won!” For a moment I held my breath, not sure how my son would react. I need not have worried. I watched, through tears, as my son threw up his hand in the classic high-five salute and started chanting, “Way to go Mickey! Way to go Mickey!” Within moments both teams surrounded Mickey, joining in the chant and congratulating him on his goal.Later that night, when my daughter asked who had wo n, I smiled as I replied, “It was a tie. Everybody won.”56.What was the score of the soccer match?A.Two to two, equal to both the teams.B.Three to one in Mickey’s team’s favor.C.Two to one in the opposite team’s favor.D.Two to one in Mickey’s team’s favor.57. The underlined word “bush” in paragraph 3 means___.A. cheer B cry C laughter D silence58. What did the author worry about when Mickey scored and hugged his son?A. The result of the match would fail his son.B. His son would shout at Mickey for his goal.C. Mickey would again hug the opposing players.D. His son would understand Mickey’s wrong goal.59. Why did Mickey kick a wrong goal?A. he liked the opposing players.B. he often kicked the wrong goal.C. he had a disease.D. he just wanted to get scores.60. It can be referred from the passage that _______.A. both teams liked and respected Mickey.B. both teams were thankful to Mickey for his goal.C. Mickey didn’t mind though his goal was wrong.D. Mickey was a kind-hearted boy and hoped everybody won.BWhen I was small and my grandmother died I couldn’t understand why I had no tears. But that night when my dad tried to cheer me up, my laugh turned into crying. So it came as no surprise to learn that researchers believe crying and laughing come from the same part of the brain. Just as laughing has many health advantages, scientists are discovering that so, too, does crying.Whatever it takes for us to reduce pressure is important to our emotional (情感的) health, and crying seems to study found that 85 percent of women and 73 percent of men report feeling better after crying.Besides, tears attract help from other people. Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and friendly and they are more ready to provide support and comfort. Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better; sometimes we don't even know we' re very sad until we cry. We learn about our emotions through crying, and then we can deal with them.Just as crying can be healthy, not crying — holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering —can be bad for physical health. Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illnesses. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry. But when you feel like crying, don't fight it. It's a natural— and healthy — emotional response (反应).61. Why didn't the author cry when her grandmother died?A. Because her father did not want her to feel too sad.B. Because she did not love her grandmother.C. Because she was too shy to cry at that time.D. The author doesn’t give the explanation.62. It can be inferred from the text that ______.A. there are two ways to keep healthyB. crying does more good to health than laughingC. crying and laughing play the same rolesD. emotional health has a close relationship to physical health63. According to the author, which of the following statements is true?A. Crying is the best way to get help from others.B. Fighting back tears may cause some health problems.C. We will never know our deep feelings unless we cry.D. We must cry if we want to reduce pressure.64. What might be the most suitable title for the text?A. Power of TearsB. How to Keep HealthyC. Why We CryD. A New Scientific DiscoveryCLions are opportunists. They prefer to eat without having to do too much work. When resting in the shade, they are also watching the sky to see what is flying by, and even in the heat of the day they will suddenly start up and run a mile across the plains to find out what is going on. If another animal has made a kill, they will drive it off and take the kill for themselves. A grown lion can easily eat 60 pounds of meat at a single feeding. Often they eat until it seems painful for them to lie down. The lioness (母狮) , being thinner and faster, are better hunters (猎手) than the males (雄狮). But the males don’t mind. After the kill they move in and take the rest share. Most kills are made at night or just before daybreak. Roughly, It’s about twenty daytim e attempts for one kill. When lions are hiding for an attack by a water hole, they wait patiently and can charge at any second. The kill is the exciting moment in the day-to-day life of the lion, since these great animals spend most of their time, about 20 hours a day, sleeping and resting.Lions are social cats, and when they are having a rest, they love to touch each other. After drinking at a water hole, a lioness rests her head on another’s back. When walking, young lions often touch faces with older ones, an act of close ties among members of the group.65. By describing lions as “opportunists” in the first paragraph, the author means thatlions ______.A. are cruel animalsB. are clever animalsC. like to take advantage of other animalsD. like to take every chance to eat66. According to the text, which of the following is true?A. Lions make most kills in the daytime.B. Males care more about eating than active killing.C. Lions are curious about things happening around them.D. It doesn’t take lions too much time to make a kill.67. How can we know that lions are social animals?A. They depend on each other.B. They look after each other well.C. They readily share what they have.D. They enjoy each other’s company.68. What would be the best title for the text?A. Powerful LionsB. Lions at Work and PlayC. Lions, Social CatsD. Lions, Skilled HuntersDBeauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy(值得表扬). Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisers give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer to attractive defendants(被告). But in the executive(行政的)circle, beauty can become a liability. While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder(梯子),it is negative to a woman.Handsome male executives were considered as having most honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck. All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight successes. Why are attractive women not thought to be able?An attractive woman is considered to be more feminine(女性的)and an attractive man more manly(男子汉的)than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the “manly” qualities required. This is true even in politics…….69. The underlined word “liability”(Para 1) may be replaced with ________.A. disadvantageB. strengthC. wealthD. uselessness70. In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness ______.A. makes women look more honest and capableB. often provides women a happier lifeC. may be a kind of shortcoming for womenD. often enables women to succeed more easily71. It can be inferred from the passage that people’s view on beauty is often _____.A. selfishB. reasonableC. modernD. one-sided(片面)72. Following the end of the passage, what will be written about?A. the disadvantage of attractiveness for men in another fieldB. the advantage of attractiveness for women in another fieldC. the disadvantage of attractiveness for women in another fieldD. the advantage of attractiveness for men in another fieldEThe closing ceremony must take place in the stadium after the end of all the events. ADespite the fact that it has never been seen almost everyone is familiar with the legendary unicorn(独角兽). Descriptions of unicorns have been found dating from ancient times. The great philosopher Aristotle theorized that there were two types of unicorn--- theso-called Indian Ass and the Oryx, a kind of antelope. Unicorns are often used in the logo of a noble family, town council or university as their special sign. Even Scotland is represented by a unicorn.According to the legend, anyone attempting to catch a unicorn had to be extremely cautious as it has a reputation for being very fierce. A clever trick suggested by unicorn-trappers, in order to catch this magnificent beast without being hurt by its horn, was for the hunter to stand in front of a tree and then to move quickly behind it as the unicorn charged. Hopefully, the creature could then be captured when its horn was stuck in the tree. When hollowed out and used as a drinking-cup, the unicorn’s horn was said to have the power to offer protection against person. It was believed that nobody could be harmed-by drinking the contents of a unicorn’s horn. Right up until the French Revolution in 1789, the French court was said to have used cups made of “unicorn” horn in order to protec t the king. In addition, the horn was said to have medicinal value, so much so that it could be sold for more than ten times the price of the same weight of gold. What, then, was “unicorn” horn? We know at times the rhino(犀牛) was confused with this legendary creature. A drinking-cup supposedly made of “unicorn” horn was discovered to be made of the horn of a rhino.56.
