Y our roommate told me that I could find you in the TV lounge(休息室;起居室).What are you doing here?M: What does it look like I am doing?W: Well, it looks like you are watching television. But we have a linear algebra(线性代数) mid-term tomorrow, so I thought you’d be studying for it and maybe I can study with you.M: Oh, well, I was just taking a break. This linear algebra stuff gives me a headache if I work on it too long.W: I know what you mean. I’ve been working on it for 3 hours through it already. I’m beginning to go cross. I don’t wanna impose on her.W: Y eah, I guess you are right. But you know what, she owes me a big favor. Let’s at least give her a call and see what she says. 大学英语视听说四级新版原文+练习答案Unit4
⼤学英语视听说四级新版原⽂+练习答案Unit4Unit 4 CreativityPart 1 Listening, Understanding and SpeakingListening IIn China, education is considered a race. Students have to begin as early as possible and have to proceed as quickly as possible around the track. Success is measured by how many students cross the finish line in the short time .In America, we recognize the race too, but we feel that the students have a chance to explore things for themselves, even if not all of them reach the finish line. As a result of their exploring, some of the participants may have more to offer by the end of the race. The advantage of the Chinese way is that more students become proficient and reach the finish line. The disadvantage is that they may have less to say or to show once they get there. The disadvantage of the American way is that some students never finish the race. The advantage, however, is that some who do go "all the way" have very interesting and original things to say when they get there.1. The merchant greeted both of them and said, "May I ask why you have come to my humble house" The Goddess of Wealth said, "We want you to judge between us who is the most beautiful."The merchant did not know what to say. He knew he was between the devil and the deep blue sea: If he said that Wealth was more beautiful than Poverty, Poverty would curse him. If he said that Poverty was more beautiful than Wealth, Wealth would abandon him. However, he became calm and said, "I have great respect for you both. Would you please do what I ask of you It is the only way I can judge properly." The Goddesses agreed. He said, "Mother Wealth, would you please walk towards my house Mother Poverty, Would you please walk away from my house This way I can see you both better, from near and far." The two Goddesses did what the merchant had asked them to do. Then the merchant confidently declared, "Mother Wealth! You appear most beautiful when you are nearest my house. Mother Poverty! You look most beautiful when you are farthest from my house." The Goddesses appreciated the wit and wisdom of the merchant. The Goddess of Wealth happily stayed in his house while the Goddess of Poverty cheerfully departed.、Whenever we have a serious problem, if we look within and think calmly, a solution will come in answer to the problem.1. What does the story tell us CListening IIIThere is an old and common saying in the United States that "There is nothing new under the sun." I thought of that today while reading an article in a magazine. The article tells about the growing number of people who are building earth-sheltered houses, which are partly underground. I had known about modern earth-sheltered houses, but I had never thought about their roofs before. Instead of having metal or tiles on the roofs, many of these houses now have living roofs. The wooden top of the house is covered with a special waterproof plastic material. On top of this there is soil, in which grass and flowers are planted. Such a roof can be very beautiful. But this really is not a new idea. When the early settlers came to the UnitedStates, they often made their houses by digging into the ground. Their roofs were made of wood, and then covered by large areas of soil with grass or turf. They were warm, though not always waterproof. People replaced these houses and roofs as soon as they could live in regular wooden homes with wooden or metal roofs. Now, 200 years later, some people think of this as a new idea. But I think, "There is nothing new under the sun."1. 1) partly underground 2) living 3 ) digging into the ground 4) grass waterproof`2.Questions:1. Coffee was in Arabia around 1,000 AD, and just before that, playing cards were invented in China.Woman:Well, I got this one right. First diagram of a flying machine was drawn by Leonardo da Vinci, as I said, in 1492. Man: Yeah, but the first air flight wasn't made until 1903, and it was in the United States. The oldest known piece of pottery was found in China and dates back to 7,900 BC. Pottery doesn't just include pots, but anything made from clay that can hold things, such as jugs, vases and cups. Pottery was used to hold water, milk, seeds and grains.Later, people learned to mix different clays together to make stronger pottery and to put the pottery in a fire oven so that the clay would harden faster. The potter's wheel was invented in China around 3100 BC. The wheel spins clay like a top. It allows people to make pottery much more quickly and makes shapes that were perfectly symmetrical—bowls that were really round, rather than lumpy or uneven. Pottery is not only considered one of the first inventions but also one of the first art forms. Most types of pottery have been painted with figures or designs; some even tell a story!1. The characters on this show are mainly puppets, and probably the most loved of the puppets is a gigantic yellow bird called "Big Bird".Caroll Spinney has played Big Bird all the years of Big Bird's existence on American television. Spinney's love of puppets and his own creativity led him to this career. When he was five years old, he saw his first puppet show. He loved the show and never forgot it. When he was seven he bought a used monkey puppet for five cents. His mother had made him a stuffed snake from green material, so he got the idea of making his own puppet show. He made a stage from wooden orange boxes and his mother's old curtains. He charged 2 cents for admission and earned 32 cents for his first performance.Spinney's family liked his creativity and encouraged him to do more. For Christmas when he was nine, his older brother made him a better puppet theater and his mother secretly sewed eight colorful puppets for him. Spinney later wrote, "The more I gave shows, the more I felt the power that one has when performing. All these people would sit in a room and listen to everything I said. I did all the character voices: little girl voices, an old lady voice, and a ghost voice. The audience listened and clapped at the end, and also paid me to do it. What could be a better way to make a living than to perform I knew that I would wind up in the world of entertainment." Spinney continued giving puppet shows. When he decided to go to art school, puppet shows helped him pay for his tuition. Even when he was in the army, he managed to continue giving puppet shows. He knew he wanted to do this as his life's work and that he wanted his audience to be children. When he was given the opportunity to create the character of Big Bird on "Sesame Street", he accepted it and over the years has made Big Bird one of the most beloved characters on American television.1-5 T T T F F6-10 T T T F F。

大学英语四级听力练习题篇1Britain Prepares for Historic EU VoteLONDON— Britain prepares for a momentous vote Thursday that will decide whether it leaves the European Union. The debate has centered on immigration and economic security and has often been bitter. Both sides have lowered the tone of their arguments after a three-day suspension of campaigning that followed the murder of an anti-Brexit lawmaker, an incident that polls indicate has shocked many previously undecided voters who now say they will vote to remain. These are uncertain times in a nation whose economy is the second largest in the European Union. The stakes are huge. There are warnings that leaving the 28-member bloc may cause the British pound to lose 15 percent of its value and bring the resignation of David Cameron, the country’s prime minister, whose mandate depends on whether Britain listens to him and votes to remain.“If we choose to leave, we can leave. But let us be clear - if we do leave, that is it. We are walking out the door,” said Cameron. For such an important election, many voters complain there has been too little solid information to make a decision and too much scaremongering, and grandstanding by both sides. Flotillas of the “Leave” and “Remain” camps recently faced off on theRiver Thames. For months, the Leave campaign has been hitting the streets. Its arguments are based largely on immigration, and the belief that Britain has handed control of its borders to a European super state.“The U.K. has lost control over migration. We have to accept anyone into this country if they have an EU passport, no matter if they have a criminal record or not. We are not allowed to say ‘no’ to people and that is damaging for the security of the U.K., but it is also putting pressure on jobs and opportunities for young people,” said Tom Harwood, a Brexit campaigner. The murder of Jo Cox, an anti-Brexit, pro-immigrant lawmaker allegedly by a far right extremist with a history of mental problems had a sobering effect on both campaigns, and on voters.“There has been a lot of bad feeling because of the way both the Leave campaign, the Brexiters, and the Remain campaign have acted,” said Mary White, a British voter.Polls since the June 16th murder showed the Leave camp losing ground, but with both sides still very close on a referendum that many believe could change the course of European history.大学英语四级听力练习题篇2Large Muslim Community in Minnesota Observes Ramadan MINNEAPOLIS— Ramadan is widely observed in parts of the northern U.S. state of Minnesota; a place a large Muslim community calls home.An estimated 200,000 Muslims live in Minnesota. When you walk into the businesses and the neighborhoods where Somalis reside, you would assume you are in a Muslim country. At night, houses of worship are full of people saying the so called the “Taraweeh” p rayers identified with Ramadan.Rowda Mosque in Minneapolis is one of the places where worshipers come in masses. Imam Abdirazak Abshir Farah (aka San’ani) talks about the virtue of Ramadan.“Muslims who are fasting shouldn't only avoid eating and drinking but all evil deeds as well.”During Ramadan, people strive to help the poor and the needy. Farhia Isse Qalanjo is a volunteer from the Minnesota branch of “Walaal Afuri,” an organization that helps poor people in Somalia.“In Somalia, there are people who have no relatives in foreign countries who send them money and are in dire needs. We are collecting the money for them. We don’t know them but we got their contacts through friends.”Jamal Farah (aka Happy Khalif) is a barber at Karmel Somali Mall. He is also a well-known comedian.“Since I came to the U.S., I have never cooked food. Maybe, I occasionally make tea for myself. You can find everything in the mall, even there is a buffet upstairs. It is easy.”Last year, the Minneapolis City Council approved a bill that permits Somali businesses to stay open after regular closing hours during the month of Ramadan. The owner of Safari Restaurant, Abdurahman Abkos believes this came as a result of the prominent role the Somali community plays in the city.“To ex tend the hours of operations during the Holy Month of Ramadan is a recognition of the role of the Somali and the Muslim communities in the city.”This year, Ramadan came in the summer season. People fast between 17-18 hours. Some complain about the hightemperature and lengthy hours, but find it spiritually rewarding.【大学英语四级听力练习题】。

When his wife entered, he saw her for the first time in nine years. Doctors confirm that he has regained his sight and hearing from the flash of lightning, but they are unable to explain the occurrence. Even though the ancient Egyptians and Romans used a kind of cement, it was not until 1824 that an English bricklayer developed a cement strong enough for modern roads and buildings. While experimenting in his kitchen, the bricklayer found that a mixture of limestone and clay, that had been heated together formed a hard, stonelike chunk as it cooled. When this substance was ground into a fine powder it could be stored indefinitely. When the powder was mixed with water, it made an excellent quality of cement that quickly hardened in sunlight or even under water. 大学英语四级(听力篇章)专项练习试卷4(题后含答案及解析) 题型有:1.听力原文:Saving money is a first step toward wealth. Putting money away for the future also supports the banking system. Banks need a supply of savings to provide money for loans. In the United States, people who want to start a savings have many choices. Banks, savings-and-loans and credit unions are traditional places to open an account.[17]Credit unions are cooperatives for people who are linked in some way. For example, the members may work for a university or a government agency. Most credit unions are non-profit organizations. Savers have their money guaranteed up to one hundred thousand dollars. Banks and other financial organizations pay interest on savings accounts. But the interest rates are low. Certificates of deposit are another way to save. They pay higher interest rates. With a certificate of deposit, a person agrees not to withdraw an amount of money for a period of time. The term could be three months, or it could be several years. Longer terms, and larger amounts, pay higher interest. People can withdraw their money early but at a cost. Another way to save is through a money market fund. This is a kind of mutual fund. Mutual funds invest money from many people. Money market funds pay higher interest than savings accounts. The money is usually placed in short-term government securities. Money market funds, however, may not be federally guaranteed like other kinds of savings. 16. What are the traditional places to open an account in the United States?17. Which group can form a credit union?18. Which way of saving may not be federally guaranteed?1.A.Banks, government agencies and credit unions.B.Banks, deposit unions and money market funds.C.Banks, savings-and-loans and deposit unions.D.Banks, savings-and-loans and credit unions.正确答案:D解析:短文中说到:传统的可以开账户的场所是银行、储蓄与贷款协会以及信贷互助会。

Preschoolers are children around the age of 4 or 5.The term ‘obese’ refers to calculations of your Body Mass Index, what doctors call BMI. They use a person’s height, weight and age to assess their amount of body fat. BMIs help tell whether a person is underweight, normal, overweight or obese. The World Health Organization says obesity can lead to serious long-term health problems like diabetes, heart disease and stroke.Researchers from the Ohio State University’s College of Public Health have found that young children who go to bed after 9 p.m. are twice as likely to be obese later in life. The researchers wrote their findings in The Journal of Pediatrics. The lead author of the study is Sarah Anderson. She is an associate professor ofepidemiology. She studies how diseases spread and how they can be controlled. Anderson says that, for parents, the results of the study support the importance of creating a bedtime routine. She says that having a usual bedtime routine is something “families can do to lower their child's risk” of becoming overweight.A usual, early bedtime, Anderson adds, “is also likely to have positive benefits on behavior and on social, emotional and cognitive development."Researchers used data from 977 children for the study. These children are part of a larger project called the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. The project follows healthy babies born in 1991 in 10 U.S. cities. The children were 4 ½ years old when their mothers report ed their usual weekday bedtime. Researchers then divided the children into three groups:those who went to bed by 8 p.m. or earlier, those who went to bed between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. andthose whose bedtimes were after 9 p.m.When these children turned 15 years old, the researchers looked at their rates of obesity. Of those with the earliest bedtimes, only one out of 10 was obese. Of those who went to bed between 8 and 9 p.m., 16 percent became obese. And out of those with the latest bedtimes, 23 percent became obese.Anderson said putting children in bed early does not mean they will immediately fall asleep. But, she adds, it makes it "more likely that children will get the amount of sleep they need to be at their best.”But Anderson says it is important to understand that having early bedtimes may be harder for some families than others. She says that, “families have many competing demands and there are trade-offs that get made.” For example, she says, if some parents work late, that can push the children’s bedtimes to laterin the evening. Is childhood obesity a worldwide problem?Obesity among children in the United States is a major health concern. About 17 percent of children and teenagers in the U.S. are considered obese. That is according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The World Health Organization reported in 2014 that the number of overweight babies and young children worldwide had increased from 31 million in 1990 to 44 million in 2012. If that trend continues, the WHO warns, there will be 70 million obese children in the world by 2025.I’m Anna Matteo.______________________________________________________________ Words in This Storypreschool - n. a school for very young childrenobese - adj. fat in a way that is unhealthyassess - v. to make a judgment about (something)epidemiology - n. the study of how disease spreads and can be controlledroutine - n. a regular way of doing things in a particular order cognitive - adj. of, relating to, or involving conscious mental activitiesdata - n. facts or information used usually to calculate, analyze, or plan something。

You haven't turned the page in the last ten minutes.W: No, Jim, I suppose I haven't. I need to get through although, but I keep drifting away.M: So it doesn't really hold your interest?W: No, not really. I wouldn't bother with it, to be honest, but I have to read it for a seminar. I'm at the university.M: It's a labor of labor then rather than a labor of love.W: I should say, I don't like Dickens at all really, the author, indeed, I am starting to like the whole course less and less.M: It's not just the book, it's the course as well?W: Yeah, in a way, although the course itself isn't really that bad, a lot of it is pretty good, in fact, and the lecturers are fine. It's me, I suppose. You see, I wanted to do philosophy rather than English, but my parents took me out of it.M: So the course is OK as such. It's just that hadn't been left to you. You would have chosen a different one.W: Oh, they had my best interest at heart, of course,[24B] my parents. They always do, don't they? They believe that my job prospects would be pretty limited with the degreeof philosophy. Plus they give me really a generous allowance, but I am beginning to feel that I'm wasting my time and their money. They would be so disappointed though if I told them I was quitting.22. Most of the population, however, will be undisturbed for only three years, then they will be dug up, washed, compressed into a small tin box, and placed in a bone room. If the body has only partially decayed, it is reburied in a smaller cheaper grave, but not for long, the body will be dug up again some time later when it has fully decayed. Buying a piece of land for a grave is the only way to avoid this process. The cost of the grave is so great that most people choose to rent a grave for three years and even after being dug up, lasting peace is still not guaranteed. If no one pays for renting space in the bone room, the skeleton is removed and stored in a building in a poor part of the town. Lack of space in Amphons is the main reason why the dead are dug up after three years. The city is so overcrowded that sometimes dead bodies are kept in hospitals for over a week until a grave is found. Amphons city council wants to introduce cremation that is burning the dead bodies as a means of dealing with the problem. But the Greek Church resists this practice, they believe the only place where people burn is a hell, so burning dead bodies is against the Greek concept of life after death. To save space, the church suggested burying the bodies standing up instead of lying down. Some people proposed building multi-storey underground grave yards.26. D What must Greeks do to keep the dead resting in ever-lasting peace?27. A Why are most dead bodies in Amphons dug up after three years?28. B What suggestions does the church give about theburying of the dead bodies?29. C What practice does the Greek church object to?If you visit a big city anywhere in the world, you will probably find a restaurant would serve the food of your own native country. Most large cities in the United States offer international sample of foods. Many people enjoy eating the food of other nations. This is probably one reason why there are so many different kinds of restaurants in the United States. A second reason is that many Americans come from other parts of the world. Theyenjoy tasting the foods of their native lands. In the city of Detroit, for example, there are many people from western Europe, Greece, Latin America, and the Far East. There are many restaurants in Detroit which serve the foods of these areas. There are many other international restaurants too. Americans enjoy the foods in these restaurants as well as the opportunity to better understand the people and their way of life. One of the most common international restaurants to be found in the United States is the Italian restaurant. The restaurant may be a small business run by a single family. The mother of the family cooks all of the dishes, and the father and children serve the people who come to eat there. Or it may be a large restaurant owned by several different people who worked together in the business. Many Italian dishes that Americans enjoy are made with meats, tomatoes and cheese. They are very delicious and tasty.Questions 30 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard.30. A Why are there so many international restaurants in the United States?31. B Why do Americans like to go to international restaurants apart from enjoying the foods there?32. C How is it typical Italian family restaurant run in the United States? Passage ThreeOne winter day in 1891, a class of training school in Massachusetts, U. S. A, went into the gym for their daily exercises. Since the football season had ended, most of young men felt they were in for a boring time. But their teacher, Janes Nasmith had other ideas. He had been working for a long time on the new game that would have the excitement of American football. Nasmith showed the men a basket he had hung at the each end of the gym, and explained that they were going to use a round European football, at first everybody tried to throw the ball into the basket no matter where he was standing. “Pass! Pass!” Nasmith kept shouting, blowing his whistle to stop the excite d players. Slowly, they began to understand what was wanted of them. The problem with the new game, which was soon called “basketball”, was getting the ball out of the basket. They used ordinary food baskets with bottoms, and the ball, of course, stayed inside. At first, someone had to climb up every time a basket was scored. It was several years before someone came up with the idea of removing the bottom of the basket and letting the ball fall through. There have been many changes in the rules since then, and basketball has become one of the world’s most popular sports.33. D What did Nasmith do to entertain his students one winter day?34. C According to the speaker, what was the problem with the new game?35. Then we have problems and some processes to learn. Y ou go to class, you keep up, you do the homework, and you know it.W: How is your English class different?M: First of all, they don’t want to teach us all the rules. They tell us one rule. We use that rule, but soon it won’t work. It’s more complicated and there are a lot of exceptions. Sometimes I think the teachers don’t know the rules either.W: But you don’t really learn a langu age from the rules anyway. Y ou have to use it.M: Y es, that’s something else they tell us. But why can’t we just go to class, study, and do our homework? W: Look at it this way. Can you learn to play football by sitting at home and reading about football?M: No, of course not.W: But why not? Y ou could understand the rules, the duties of each position, and all the special situations. M: Football isn’t like that. Y ou have to feel the ball, practise kicking it hundreds of times, practise running down the field, moving toward the goal, and centering the ball. No one can learn that by passively studying inside.W: Well, learning a language is more like learning to play football than learning mathematics.Question 9~12 are based on the conversation you have just heard.9.What is the conversation mainly about? But the geography of American West is my major interest, and I’ve done a lot o f reading in thefield. Last semester I took Professor Harrison’s course, and I didn’t find it nearly challenging enough. M: I see. Y ou certainly aren’t one of those students who are out for easy grades.W: I should say not. I really want to learn something.M: Well, I’ll speak to Professor Harrison about it. If he thinks you are ready, I’ll let you enrol.W: Oh, thank you, Professor Brown, that is really very nice of you.Questions 13 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard.13.Why does the woman come to see Professor Brown? He took off from an airport runway on a training flight. A strong wind blew the plane sideways, and it touched the top of a tree. Both wheels of the plane were knocked off but the plane did not crash. The pilot sent a radio message to the airport. He did not know how to land without wheels. The airport controller promised to help the pilot. He telephoned the airport firemen and told them what to do.A fireman saw a long, open lorry. It was waiting at the airport building to collect some goods. The fireman borrowed it and drove to one end of the airport runway. Then he turned round and waited for the plane to come. The airport controller sent a radio message to the pilot. He told him to try to land on top of the lorry. The fireman drove quickly along the runway and the pilot flew down to land. Luckily, he managed to land on the lorry. Part of the lorry was damaged and the tail of the plane was broken, but nobody was injured. The fireman slowed the lorry down and then stopped. The pilot was very grateful. He gladly agreed to pay for the damage to the lorry.Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.16.Why did the pilot sent a radio message to the airport? (C)17.Why did the lorry come to the airport? (D)18.Why was the pilot grateful? (A)Passage T woAlaska is known for its cold snowy weather. For many years dog sleds were the only means of transportation. Some Alaskans combine fun and hard work in an annual dog sled race. The trail race is the longest dog sled race in the world. It lasts from two to three weeks and covers almost 17 hundred km. The race goes across Alaska from Anchorage to Rome. It follows the trails that were once used by the people who looked for gold in Alaska’s wildness. The race also follows the route of several brave Alaskans who brought medicine from Anchorage to Rome in the winter of 1925. They carried the badly needed medic ine through bad storm and helped save many lives. The race, which is held in March, is very hard for the drivers to sleigh dogs. Each day the dogs run for about four hours and then rest for four hours. They run day and night, and sometimes travel as much as one hundred and ten km a day. The drivers must feed and take care of the dogs at race periods. Because the race is so hard many drivers do not expect to win. For most of them just being able to finish is a victory.Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard.19.What is this passage mainly about? (D)20.When is the race held? (A)21.Which is considered a victory for most of the drivers? (C)Passage ThreeMillions of words have written about young people in the United States. There are reasons for this great interest in the ideas, feelings and actions of youth.Today there are about seven million Americans in colleges and universities. Y oung persons under twenty-five make up nearly half of the American population. Many of these will soon be in charge of the nation. Naturally their ideas are important to everyone in the country, and it is necessary for older people to understand what they think and feel.College students today have strong opinions about right and wrong. They are deeply interested in making a better life for all, especially for those who have not been given a fair chance before. They see much that is wrong in the lives of their parents. It is hard for them to see what is right and good in the older ways. As a result, there is often trouble in American families. Y our country may be meeting such problems, too. Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard.22.How many of the Americans are almost young persons under twenty-five? (C)23.Why is it necessary for older people to understand what young persons think and feel? (D)24.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
