It is our misfortune that, for most of us, that clear-eyed vision — that true instinct for what is beautiful and awe-inspiring — is dimmed and even lost before we reach adulthood. If I had influence with the angels who are supposed to preside over all children, I would ask that their gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life.If children are to keep alive their natural sense of wonder without any such gift from the angels, they need the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with the child the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in. Parents often feel inadequate when confronted on the one hand with the eager, sensitive mind of a child and on the other with a worldof complex physical nature. In a mood of self-defeat, they exclaim, “How can I possibly teach my child about nature —why, I don’t even know one bird from another!”I sincerely believe that for children, and for parents seeking to guide them, it is not half so important to know as it is to feel. If facts are the seeds that later produce knowledge and wisdom, then the emotions and the impressions of the senses are the fertile soil in which the seeds must grow. The years of early childhood are the time to prepare the soil. Once the emotions have been aroused —a sense of the beautiful, the excitement of the new and the unknown, a feeling of sympathy, pity, admiration or love —then we wish for knowledge about the object of our emotional response. Once found, such knowledge has far more lasting meaning than mere information. It is more important to pave the way for children’s desire to know than to put them on a diet of facts they are not ready to assimilate.Even if you feel you have little knowledge of nature at your disposal, there is still much you can do for your child. Wherever you are and whatever your resources, you can still look up at the sky — its dawn and evening beauties, its moving clouds, its stars by night. You can listen to the wind, whether it blows with majestic voice through a forest or sings a many-voiced chorus around the corners of your apartment building, and in the listening, you can gain magical release for your thoughts. You can still feel the rain on your face and think of its long journey from sea to air to earth, and wonder at the mysteries of natural selection embodied in the perfume and flavour of a fruit. Even if you are a city dweller, you can find some place, perhaps a park or a golf course, where you can observe the mysterious migrations of the birds and the changing seasons. And with your child you can ponder the mystery of a gro wing seed, even if it’s just one planted in a pot of earth in the kitchen window.Exploring nature with your child is largely a matter of being open to what lies all around you. It is learning again to use your eyes, ears, nose and fingertips, opening up the disused channels of your senses. For most of us, knowledge of our world comes largely through sight, yet we look about with such unseeing eyes that we are partially blind. One way to open your eyes to unnoticed beauty is to ask yourself, “What if I had never seen this before? What of I knew I would never see it again?”What is the value of preserving and strengthening this sense of awe and wonder, this recognition of something beyond the boundaries of human existence? Is the exploration of the natural world just a pleasant way to pass the golden hours of childhood or is there something deeper?I am sure there is something much deeper, something lasting and significant. Those who dwell, as scientists or laypeople, among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life. Whatever the problems or concerns of their personal lives, their thoughts can find paths that lead to inner satisfaction and to renewed excitement in living. Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There issymbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of the birds, the ebb and flow of the tides, the folded bud ready for the spring. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature — the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the winter.I like to remember the distinguished Swedish oceanographer, Otto Pettersson, who died a few years ago at the age of ninety-three, in full possession of his keen mental powers. His son has related in a recent book how intensely his father enjoyed every new experience, every new discovery concerning the world about him.“He was an incurable romantic,” the son wrote, “intensely in love with life and with the mysteries of the u niverse.” When he realized he had not much longer to enjoy the earthly scene, Otto Pettersson said to his son: “What will sustain me in my last moments is an infinite curiosity as to what is to follow.”写作运用:记叙文写作写法本单元要求写故事,这属于叙事记叙文。

高中英语Unit 1 The world of our senses(1)

高中英语Unit 1 The world of our senses(1)

Unit 1 The world of our sensesWele to the unit(The first period)Step 1 Lead-inAlmost everyone has five senses and uses them all the time.Do you know what they are? (sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch)Well, in our daily lives —1. With what do we see and hear?(We see with our eyes and hear with our ears.)2. How do we know whether a dish is delicious?(We taste it with our tongues.)3. If a flower has a pleasant smell, how do we know it?(We smell it with our noses.)4. If we want to know whether the water in the basin is hot or cold, what do we do?(We put our hands in the water to feel it.)5. How do we know about the world around us?(We usually use our five senses.)(Ask students more questions if time allows. While doing this, you can write down the following words onIf someone lost one or two of his senses, what would happen?(You can use the following questions to elicit students’ ideas.)As we all know, almost everyone has five senses, which are used everywhere and all the time. We learn about the world through the five senses. We use the five senses to study, work and relax, but there are some people who have lost one or more of their senses.A person who cannot see is blind and someone who cannot hear is deaf.Do you know how blind people can read? (They can read by touching raised dots which represent (= stand for) numbers and letters. This system is called Braille.)How do the deaf municate with each other?(They use body language or sign language.)Step 2 ReadingRead the instructions and the short passage to see if there are any sentences that you don’t understand. Then I will give you five minutes to describe the four pictures with your own words.Picture 1: What can you see?(If we look at the white part, we can see a vase. If we look at the black part, we can see two faces.) Picture 2: How do you find out the two lines are of the same length?(We can use a ruler to measure the two lines. Or we can use two pieces of paper to cover both ends of the two lines.)Picture 3: How do you know it?(We can place a ruler next to the line. Or we can also use a ruler to draw more straight lines which run parallel to the two lines.)Picture 4: How do you read the symbols in line b?(The symbols in line b can be read as the letters K, B, E, M , or K, 13, R, M.)Step 3 Discussion1. Why are people misled by their own eyes?(Because the background or other lines confuse the eyes. Also, what we expect to see can change what we see. But in fact, what is really confused is the brain, not the eyes.)2. Then read the three questions. I will put you into groups of four to discuss the three questions. Then you will be asked to report your answers.Question 1: Do you use one of your senses more than the others? Give an example. We often use one or two of the five senses more than the others when we need to.For example, ①in the darkness, the sense of hearing and the sense of touch bee more sensitive, because we can’t see anything. ②When we listen to our favorite music, we will close our eyes and just listen with our ears.③When we read a very interesting book, we’ll lose ourselves in it, and hardly hear anything around us. ④When we eat something, we not only taste or smell it, but look at it as well.Question 2:Some people cannot remember something until they have seen it. Other people only need to hear something once or twice before they can remember it. Which sense helps you learn best? How does it help you?I think that when learning English, the sense of sight and the sense of hearing help me a lot. I usually listen to thetape before I read. While I’m listeningto the tape, I’ll look at the text. And Ioften read the English text aloud. Thebination (= state of being joined or mixed together) of these two senses besthelps me remember what I have learnt.Question 3: Do you know of any people who have made great achievements even if they have lost one of their senses? What did they achieve? There are quite a few people who havemade great achievements even whenthey have lost one of their senses. Take Beethoven, the great Germanposer, as an example. He began tolose his hearing in 1797 and was partlydeaf by 1803. In 1818 when he waspletely deaf, Beethoven pletedhis most famous symphony, the NinthSymphony. Another famous musici anis Hua Yanjun, Blind Abing. Althoughhe couldn’t see anything, his famous erhu solos are admired by people allover China.Step 4 Summary and HomeworkIn this period we have talked about five senses of humans. It is presented with a short passage and four pictures that sometimes the senses affect one another and people may be misled (= be caused to have a wrong idea or impression about sb./sth.) by their own senses. This section helps us realize how we use our senses in our studies and daily life. It also helps us how to make better use of our senses. That is to say, eyes control sight and ears control hearing. Skin controls touch. Taste depends on tongue while smell depends on nose.Well, besides these, there are also other senses which are as important as those five senses. There is a sense of balance which stops us from falling down. We also have senses of hunger, thirst, cold and ache or pain. Now, I give you your homework : ……So much for today. Goodbye guys.Step 5 The design of the Writing on the Blackboard。

高一英语译林版3素材:备课资料Unit1 Theworldofoursensesperiod2含解析

备课资料1. Lost?Then Just Follow That Turtle迷航了?

2.Telepathy (心灵感应)Telepathy is the ability to communicate without the use of the five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste). It is an instinct(本能), and although quite dormant(潜伏的)in many of us, we are often capable of tapping into (激发)our latent abilities in times of emergency (紧急状况) or need. When we intuitively (直觉) know that something is happening, or about to happen, our instinct has kicked in.Telepathy can be either projective(投影的)or perceptive (感知的), we either send or receive。
