Who are the elders in your family? The most common answer is that they are your parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and elder cousins —in a word, any relative who is older than you. But that doesn’t really answer the question, does it? In a normal family, there is a big difference between being elderly and being an elder.
The elders are the storytellers, the cooks, the historians, the authorities (权威人士), the knitters (编织者), and the workhorses (做粗工者). They are the people we respect and turn to for answers or help when we are in trouble, because of their many years of life experience. Most of all, they are the people who raised us and our loved ones and helped us grow into the people we are. Now it’s our turn to look after them. Ensuring the welfare of our elders should come as naturally to us as raising our children.
Unfortunately, too many people take their parents’and grandparents’ability to care for them for granted. And in a country where so many of us live hundreds of kilometres from our families, looking after loved ones can be difficult. Even so, you should make sure your loved ones are taken care of no matter where they live, and try to look after the seniors living alone in your neighbourhood, too. T aking responsibility for the elders in our society is an important thing that all citizens should do.
5. According to the writer, the elders are those who______.
A. were much older than us
B. brought us up by working hard
C. gave us money and food
D. had many interesting stories
6. Which of the following opinions will the writer NOT agree with?
A. Naturally the elders should take care of themselves.
B. It’s our duty to take care of the elders when they are old.
C. We should take care of the elders even if a long distance separates us from them.
D. Looking after the elders is as important as raising our own children.
7. In which of the following columns (栏目) would you most probably read this passage?
A. Education.
B. Parenting.
C. Society.
D. Family.
8. The passage is written to ______.
A. explain what the elders are like
B. criticize those people who don’t respect the elders
C. explain why we should not love the elders
D. call on people to respect and love the elders

From market research over a decade we know that the basic idea of space tourism is extremely popular. Travel to the moon will surely be popular for several reasons, including adventure (冒险), science and spiritual reasons. To actually visit the moon will have a wide range of meanings for people from all cultures, young and old, women and men, and could become the global “Mecca (麦加)”of the 21st century.
As proved years ago, a return journey to the moon takes one week. As a result, ten-day to two-week lunar trips, which are very convenient for tourism, can clearly become popular services. Long-term lunar residents (居民) will need to live and work underground for much of the time in order to limit the radiation (辐射) they receive.
As lunar infrastructure (基础设施) develops, the possibility of constructing buildings six times taller than on the earth becomes possible. As the moon has only
1/6 the earth’s gravity, human’s lifelong dream of flying like birds will come true. Flying and flying sports will be a new attraction of life on the lunar surface. Calculation shows that speeds of up to about 50 kilometres per hour should be possible. As long as there are economical benefits, developers will construct a lunar flying stadium for this new sport. Flying will also be possible on the moon with zero-gravity facilities (设施). So guests will have been able to try it out there first.
9. People will travel to the moon for all of the following reasons EXCEPT ______.
A. adventure
B. fresh air
C. spiritual content
D. scientific research
10. In order to limit the radiation, long-term lunar residents will need to ______ most of the time.
A. wear protective clothes
B. work at night

A. there is less gravity
B. the air there is thinner
C. people become lighter
D. people are like birds
12. The passage mainly tells us ______ the moon in the future.

To save food for her children in India, Sanjida has had just two meals a day for months. As the rice price has gone up from 20 rupees to more
than 40 rupees per kilogramme recently, the mother of two kids found it hard to make ends meet with a monthly earning of just 4,000 rupees. Sanjida is not alone. From Argentina to Zimbabwe, price rises of 40 percent or more for rice and wheat. The rocketing food price has thrown hundreds of thousands around the world into hung er since late March. “The world’s
grain reserve (储备) has fallen to the lowest point in 30 years. It can feed the population for just 53 days, fewer than the standard of at least 70 days,” said a recent report from the World Bank.
Several causes contributed to the food price hikes, such as bad weather in producing countries, more demand for grain-fed meat, and record oil prices boosting (增长) the cost of transportation. Some UN officials also complain about the high priority (优先权) given to biofuels (生物燃料), which are made from crops in the fight against global warming.
Luckily, however, the rice price in China hasn’t gone up. Premier Wen Jiabao said that the Chinese were fully capable of feeding themselves. “With a series of measures to support farms, China’s g rain output grew four years in a row. The country has enough grain reserves standing at 150 million to 200 million tons,” said Wen.
13. The price of rice has risen by ______ in India.
A. around 100 percent
B. around 40 percent
C. about 200 percent
D. about 50 percent
14. Which of the following is NOT a direct cause of the food price hikes?

D. Increasing demand for grain-fed meat.

A. China has imported enough grain from foreign countries
B. the Chinese government pays much attention to agriculture
C. modern technology has been introduced
D. Chinese people need less grain in their daily diets
16. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Saving Food for the Future.
B. The Food Price Is Going Up.
C. The UN Is Fighting against Biofuels.
D. China’s Grain Output Grew in a Row.

Want a glance of the future of health care? Take a look at the way the various networks of people in patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity (连接) is being used to deliver medicine to the patient —no matter where he or she may be.
Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms (症状) are the
most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis (远程诊断) will be based on real physiological data from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone, it is perfectly practical to send a patient’s vital signs over the telephone. Other medicine technology groups are working on using telemedicine (远程医学) to rural care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster need —especially after earthquakes.
But there is one problem. Bandwidth (带宽) is the limiting factor for sending complex (复杂的) medical pictures around the world —CT photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users. Communication satellites may be able to deal with the short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars.
Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for
medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and sharing of medical information, experts’opinions and diagnosis are common.
17. The basis of remote diagnosis will be ______.
A. personal data assistance
B. some words of the patient
C. real physiological information
D. medical pictures from the Internet
18. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Patients don’t need doctors in hospitals any more.
B. It is impossible to send a patient’s signs over the telephone.
C. Many teams use telemedicine dealing with disasters now.
D. Broadband communications will become cheaper in the future.
19. The underlined word “problem” in the third paragraph refers to “the fact that______”.
A. bandwidth isn’t big enough to send complex medical pictures
B. the second-generation of Internet has not become popular yet
C. communication satellites can only deal with short-term needs
D. there is not enough equipment for spreading the medical care
20. Telemedicine depends on the improvement of the following EXCEPT ______.
A. mobile phones
B. CT photos
C. broadband communications
D. computers
