If you plan to travel to Japan, it might be helpful to know some Japanese customs about public behavior, dining out, tipping, and gifts before you go.
When dining out, before you start a meal, you will be given a basket with a hot towel in it. Use this towel to wipe your hands and then put it back in the basket.
A napkin (餐巾) is not usually used. Be sure to wait until the older people at your table pick up their chopsticks before you begin eating.
You will find rice served at every meal. Always alternate a bite of rice with a bite of the side dishes. Don’t eat just one dish at a time; this is considered rude. Drink soup directly from the bowl, but don’t finish your soup before eating other dishes; it should accompany the entire meal.
When it is time to pay the bill, if the other person has invited you to dinner, let that person pay. If you wish to treat, be the first one to pick up the bill. Don’t spend time checking over the bill. Honesty is very important and you can assume that the numbers are correct. And your change will not be counted out in front of you; it will just arrive on a tray. There is no need to leave a tip, for tipping is almost unheard of in Japan.
You will find that gifts are important. You should bring something when you visit, but it shouldn’t be too expensive or your host will be uncomfortable. Avoid
giving four of anything – the word for “four” is similar to the word for “death”. All gifts, even money, should be wrapped, but your host will probably not open the gift in front of you, in order to show that the act of giving is more important than actual gift. Use both hands when you give or receive a gift.

If you are an immigrant, the first thing you will do when you come into this country is to find a place to live. Usually you need to rent a furnished room or an apartment.
The amount of rent you pay depends on the size of the apartment. The rent you pay also depends on the floor on which the apartment is located. Elevator service adds to the cost. The location of the apartment makes a difference in the rent.
In many cases an agreement to rent the apartment is signed for a certain length of time. This agreement is called a lease (租房合同). The rent you agree to pay is written into the lease. So are the services the landlord agrees to give you.
It’s often a big problem to find a room, an apartment or a house. Walking through a neighborhood is one way of finding a place to live. The signs, “To Let,”“For Rent”, “Rooms,” and “Vacancy”, will show you which places can be rented. Looking through the classified ads in the newspaper is helpful too.
