第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)I left England for Sydney in September. It was a career move for my husband, and our 20-year-old daughter was feeling adventurous and decided to come, too. However, just before leaving England, my 79-year-old mother suffered a stroke (中风). Being strong and independent, she continued to live at
home with the help of social services. But she couldn’t look after the garden. I thought how wonderful it would be if there was an organization offering volunteer help. Friends asked me what I
planned to do in Australia, and I told them I would be looking for a volunteer position with a gardening charitable organization. Imagine my surprise when I found just the organization I had been looking for —Easy Care Gardening (ECG)!
There are several reasons why I volunteer for ECG. Firstly, as a newcomer to Australia I meet many people who, like me, volunteer some of their time. We cover a large age range, but all love gardens and helping others.
Secondly, through working with ECG I have been lucky en ough to explore Sydney’s North Shore that I might not have had the opportunity to visit otherwise.
Finally, there are all those wonderful people we call “clients (客户)”, but they are more like friends when we visit them often and tend their gardens. What great people I have met, and the stories they have to tell — the family histories, where they come from and the reasons for immigrating to Australia. I find it a privilege to have access to private gardens which, in many cases, have been the joy of their owners for many years. Each one is individual and reflects the character, needs and the history of each family. Indeed, the gardens reflect the multicultural and historical background of Sydney.
1、Why did the author move to Sydney?
A.She planned to volunteer there. B.Her husband would work there.
C.She was very keen on adventures. D.She had to look after her sick mother.
2、What made the author choose to be a gardening volunteer?
A.Her own experience. B.The tips from her friends.
C.The popularity of ECG. D.Her gardening skills.
3、What do the volunteers at ECG have in common?
A.They make friends with their clients.
B.They like to explore Sydney’s North Shore.
C.They are of similar ages and backgrounds.
D.They are kind-hearted with the same interest.
4、What does t he underlined word “one” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Client. B.Reason.
C.Garden. D.Volunteer.

23.(8分)When I was 5, my father worked the night shift as a nurse in a hospital. He was always carrying his stethoscope (听诊器) so natural ly, so I called him “Dr. Saldivar” while I pressed his stethoscope against his chest. But my father, as a humble man, was always correcting me: “I am not a doctor, son, but you can be one.” I grew up feeling like I had no limits b ecause of moments like this, which has helped me take risks personally and professionally in spite of the hardships I had to endure.
Being born to Mexican immigrants meant that my parents had to work very hard to provide for my family and I had to learn to struggle through school paperwork on my own, because my parents’ English was limited and they couldn’t always be there motivating us through the process. If I wanted to succeed
academically, my perseverance, and strength would be tested.
Perseverance, strength and good education are the gateway to success. And this is especially true when you look at the obstacles that Latinos have to overcome to succeed in public schools. For instance, while the national high school dropout (辍学) rate has decreased significantly, we still have the highest dropout rate in the country. We are more likely to live in poverty and attend racially separated schools. These issues create many other problems for Latinos.
To help relieve my family burden, I found my first job when I was 14 at a local hotel. Despite the long hours on my new job, I worked hard. Meanwhile, I continually stressed the importance of getting a respectable education and did everything possible to get one step closer to making my dream a reality.
Nearly a decade later, I became the first in my family to graduate from the University of Southern California. Knowing the social, economic, and political struggles that a community faces, I began to pursue
journalism to give the disadvantaged minorities a voice.
