It was in New Hampshire. Cody was an 11-year-old boy. Just like other boys, he enjoyed running around the lake,__and sometimes picked yellow daisies for his mother's kitchen table along the paths. But the thing he liked best was fishing. He went fishing whenever he had got a chance and he was proud of his fishing skills.
On the day before that year's bass(鲈鱼) season o pened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and perch with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure(鱼饵) and practised casting. The lure hit the water, stirring up coloured ripples in the sunset, and then silver ripples as the moon rose over the lake. It was an unusually quiet evening. The gentle wind from the lake was so refreshing.
After what seemed a long time, Cody noticed his fishing pole doubled over, and he knew at once that something huge was on the other end. His father watched with admiration as the boy skilfully brought the fish beside the bank.
Finally, he very carefully lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.
The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish, gills playing back and forth in the moonlight. The father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 pm—two hours before the season opened. He looked at the bass, then at Cody.
“You'll have to put the fish back, son,” he said.
“Dad!” cried the boy.
“There will be other fish,”said his father gently but firmly.
,”cried the boy again.

That night was soft and warm as I lay on the sofa in our living room, staring at the ceiling. I was thinking of the hospital. We had gone there that afternoon to visit my father for Valentine's Day. Daddy was in a high bed that was folded in half some way. He looked alright to me. I didn't know why he kept going to that place anyway.
I sat as quietly as possible. My trouble was that I wanted to hug him and I was afraid of what Mama would say if I climbed up on his bed to do it. I didn't know why she would mind—I only knew she would. Sometimes she said I was too rough. I didn't know the meaning of her words. I was such a little girl and Daddy was so big—how could I hurt him? I thought there must be some other reasons why he couldn't play with me like he used to. Maybe he was too tired.
My parents talked for a long time while I looked out of the window and played with my brother__and__sister. I didn't like that place and I wanted to go. There didn't seem to be anything to do there. Then, all at once,we were leaving. Daddy called me to his bedside and told me to be sure to say my prayers. I said I would and kissed him quickly on the cheek. Then I was glad to leave that building. The people there were sick…except,of course,my daddy. He was not sick at all.
As I settled comfortably into the depths of the sofa, deep in thought, I was startled by the shrill sound of the telephone. That made me angry—now Mama would get up and find I was not sleeping yet. Why did somebody have to call then anyway?

It was a cool spring evening in Melbourne, Australia. I drove to my boxing gym for
a Friday night training session. After lifting up, I started training. Then I noticed a tall and slim young__man walking through the doors. There was something about him that caught my attention.
Before long, I realized that he might have a mental__illness. Having volunteered for mental illness support groups, I really understood his problems when I looked at him.
He paid for the session, put on a pair of gloves and then started hitting the punching bag. I watched him from a distance and wanted to help him to punch straighter and better. Then I felt it was best to leave that up to the trainer who was also watching him.
After a few seconds of punching the bag, he stopped and started staring__at the ceiling. The trainer went up to him and offered to help him. It was almost like he woke up from a dream. He broke eye contact with the ceiling at once and followed the trainer's instructions.
Then the bell rang and it was the end of the round. Between rounds we were required to do five press-ups (俯卧撑), so all the boys that were training that night did five press-ups. He struggled to complete his five press-ups. The bell sounded again and the next round began. He punched the bag for a few seconds and then he stopped. This time he was staring at the walls which were decorated with boxing posters. From his expression,__it was clear to me that he could not fix his attention for long.

The story began in the__old__days,__when there were three boys, Tung, Truc, and Mai. Each of them was from a different region in Vietnam and by chance they were brought together to study under the same teacher. The only thing the young men had in common was how poor each of them was. Their families were dirt poor but the parents were determined to let their sons have education. For that very reason, all of them buried
themselves in their books so their family's effort would not go to waste. It was natural that they became friends.
When they became friends, the boys swore together that later on in life if one of the three became successful,__he would not forget the others and their poor time. He would also promise to aid the other friends out of poverty(贫穷).
After a while, due to family circumstances all three boys had to quit__school(辍学);they went their separate__ways. T ung was the first fortunate one to have his luck turn around. With a bright mind and perseverance(毅力), Tung was determined to pursue his studies.
Tung became a servant for an elderly man named Nghe in order to continue his studies. The old man recognized Tung's potential and determination and supported him like a son. For the__next__few__years,__Tung studied and he was finally able to obtain Tien Si, a certificate to a person who passed all three examinations held by the government. With the Tien Si, Tung became an officer in the capital city.
From that point, Tung's life picked up its pace; its speed turned into a wind that no one could catch up with. Even though he now lived a rich life, Tung still remembered his previous friends at school. One day, Tung decided to find his friends so he took a leave.

My 14-year-old son, John,__and I saw the coat at the same time. It was hanging at a second-hand clothing store in Northampton, MA, together with the other cheap, worn coats and all kinds of sad, woolen overcoats—a rose among thorns(刺).
While the other coats seemed lifeless, this one looked as if it were holding itself up.
The thick, black woolen coat was soft and unworn, as though it had been kept carefully
for years in the closet. The coat had a black velvet collar, beautiful tailoring, a Fifth Avenue label and an unbelievable price of $28. We looked at each other, saying nothing, but John's eyes shone. Dark, woolen topcoats were popular just then with teenage boys like John, but could cost several hundred dollars then. This coat was even better, bearing that touch of classic elegance.
John slid his arms down into the sleeves and buttoned the coat. He turned from side to side, eyeing himself in the mirror with a serious, studied expression that soon changed into a smile. The fit was perfect.
John wore the coat to school the next day and came home wearing a big smile.

Cody looked around. No other men were fishing anywhere around the lake. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever
know what time he caught the fish, the boy could tell by the firmness in his father's voice
that the decision was final. He slowly worked the hook out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water. The creature swished its body and disappeared. The boy sighed at the loss of such an awesome fish.
