If you need to call your parents but your phone is not with you, can you remember their
numbers? To remember 11 numbers is not difficult. However, because of the smartphone, many of
us are losing this ability. What’s more, smartphones weaken (削弱) our skills at giving directions,
as well as killing face-to-face communications. Even when friends are having a meal together, it’s
common for most to check their phones.
According to a report by Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers, an American company, Chinese
people spend about 170 minutes on their smartphones daily. Many students are addicted to using
smartphones. It does no good to their study. Research by Japan’s Education Ministry showed children who spend more than four hours a day on their phones perform much worse in school test than those who play with their phones for 30 minutes.
It’s true that the smartphone has made our lives easier. But many also think they spend too much time on it, and this is bad for their study or work. People are trying to change that.
A new app (应用软件) called Forest was introduced this month. It lets users plant a seed that grows into a tree over the next 30 minutes. During the half hour, users cannot use their phones, or the tree will die.
A restaurant in Los Angeles, US, gives people a 5% discount (折扣) if they don’t check their phones during a meal. Owner Mark Gold said he hopes it gives people a way to enjoy their meal and actually talk with friends and family in person.

A. can easy remember telephone numbers
B. are better at giving directions
C. have less face-to-face communication

C. A bad habit of wasting food.
50. The APP “Forest” can help people ________.

The eagle has the longest life of its group. It can reach up to 70 years. But to reach this age,
the eagle must make a hard and painful decision.
When an eagle reaches near 40, its short sharp beak becomes bent (弯曲的). Its long and
once flexible (灵活的) talons can no longer catch animals or birds for food. And its old
and heavy wings with thick feathers on its body make it difficult to fl y. Then, the eagle has only
two choices: to die or to go through a painful time of change which needs five months.
When the eagle feels weak and is about to die, it goes to a place far away on the top of a
mountain and sits on a nest. For a new life, the eagle knocks its beak against a rock until it pulls its beak out. After pulling it out, the eagle waits for a new beak to grow. And then it pulls out its talons and old feathers. It takes the eagle five months to complete its change and get a new life. We can call it its rebirth. So it can live for 30 more years.
Like the eagle, we human beings sometimes need to make some change to get out of our difficulty. In miserable condition, we have to change our ways of life. The changing may be very painful. But sometimes we have to
throw off our old habits, memories and traditions. We can’t go on with all our past burdens (重负).
52. An eagle can live at most ________.
A. 30 years
B. 40 years
C. 70 years
53. It takes eagle ________ to go through a painful time for a new life.
A. 1 month
B. 5 months
C. 1 year
54. The underlined word “miserable” here probably means ________.
A. terrible
B. good
C. lonely
55. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. When an eagle reaches near 40, its short sharp beak is still straight.
B. If the eagle doesn’t change itself, it will die.
C. For a new life, the eagle knocks its talons against a rock.
56. The best title for the passage can be ________.
A. The death of the eagle
B. A good and easy decision
C. Rebirth of the eagle
E
Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame (责备) themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And do n’t forget—if you are shy, you are not the only one.
57.What does the underlined word “genetic” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Passed down from parents.
B. Learned from friends.
C. Made up by brothers.
58. We can learn that ________ from the passage?
A. If you are shy now, you will be shy forever.
B. Many shy children have older brothers and sisters.

A. genetics, grown —ups and birthplace
