Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants.
Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it describes something
that is not yet ripe(成熟)or finished. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a situation. In the fifteenth century, a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns(角) had not yet developed. A century or so later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in battle. By the eighteenth century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today—a person who is new in a job.
Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression comes from the early nineteen hundreds. A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her garden continues to grow long after your plants have died.
The Green Revolution is the name given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains. The new plants produced much larger crops. The Green Revolution was the result of hard work by agricultural scientists who had green thumbs.
Green is also the color used to describe the powerful feeling, jealousy(嫉妒). The green-eyed monster is not a frightening creature from outer space. It is an expression used about four hundred years ago by British writer William Shakespeare in his play “Othello”. It describes the unpleasant feeling a person has when someone has something he wants. A young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if his girlfriend begins going out with someone else. Or, that green-eyed monster may affect your friend if you get a pay rise and she does not.
59. Greenhorn now refers to ____________.
A. a person who is new in a job
B. a new solider
C. a young horse
D. a thumb
60. A person who has a green thumb is a person _____________.
A. whose garden is greener than others’
B. whose thumbs are in green color
C. who is good at growing plants
D. who is younger than his neighbors
61. The author is actually talking about ______________.
A. colors
B. language
C. politics
D. agriculture
62. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. In about the 16th century, a greenhorn meant an experienced soldier
B. The Green Revolution may have some connection with green thumbs
C. The green-eyed monster was probably created by William Shakespeare
D. The green-eyed monster can be used to describe a person who is jealous

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a ‘territory’is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we
call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.
You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
63. Some scientists believe that most of the time bird’s singing is actually________.
A. an expression of happiness
B. a way of warning
C. an expression of anger
D. a way of greeting
64. What does the underlined word “territory’’mean?
A. A place where families of other species are not accepted
B. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice
C. An area for which birds fight against each other
D. An area which a bird considers to be its own
65. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?
A. Because they want to invite more friends
B. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away
C. Because they want to find outsiders around
D. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears
66. How does the writer explain bird’s singing?
A. By comparing birds with human beings
B. By reporting experiment results
C. By describing birds’daily life
D. By telling a bird’s story
D
Losing a baby tooth can be fun for a kid. You can put it under your pillow and look forward to finding some money there in the morning. And then you can watch your new permanent(永恒的) tooth grow in its place.
But if a permanent tooth falls out, that’s a problem. There isn’t another one under the gum(齿龈)that can replace it. Unfortunately, this happens to some older people. And if permanent teeth fall out or need to be pulled, an older person might need dentures.
Dentures, known as false teeth, are a set of replacement teeth for any teeth that are missing. There are partial dentures, which take the place of only a few teeth and prevent the others from changing position. If all the teeth are gone, the person would need complete dentures, which replace every tooth in the mouth.
Dentures can cause pains at first and take little time to get adjusted to. They also need special care. They should be brushed daily with a special denture brush and cleanser and soaked(浸泡)in denture solution when not in the mouth.
Dentures are important for the old because, without teeth, it’s hard to smile, talk, and eat properly. But it can be a little weird if you see someone take out his or her dentures. It can also be strange to see someone, like a grandparent, without dentures in because he or she won’t have any teeth. Try not to make fun of the person because this could cause hurt feelings. People usually lose their permanent teeth due to periodontal disease(牙周炎), or gum disease, which is caused by bacteria that attacks the gums. Diseased gums aren’t strong and healthy, so teeth can get loose and fall out. Older people often have many cavities(洞)that have been filled over the years, and these fillings can weaken over time, leading to more tooth problems.
67. If one of your baby teeth falls out, you ________.
A. should have a false tooth fixed in its place
B. have to put it under your pillow at once
C. will gain a permanent tooth in future
D. can exchange it for some money
68. A person wearing dentures ________.
A. should brush them with a special denture brush every few days
B. will take a very long time to adjust himself or herself to them
C. will experience unpleasant feelings at the beginning of fixing them
D. should use denture solution to soak them in his or her mouth
69. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Partial dentures can prevent the remaining teeth from changing position.
B. Old people will find it hard to smile, talk, and eat properly without teeth.
C. A person’s teeth will possibly get loose if diseases strike his gums.
D. It is hard for a person to wear dentures if all his teeth have fallen out.
70. What does the underlined word “weird”mean in the fifth paragraph?
A. inconvenient
B. excited
C. uncomfortable

Studying Abroad
Nowadays, studying abroad gains popularity in China. Many rich parents would rather send their children abroad to receive education than let them be educated in China.
As every coin has two sides, studying abroad is not an exception. There are advantages for people to attend school abroad. In the first place, he can use the foreign language in his daily life so that his ability in the second language may be greatly improved, as it is obvious that there is no better chance to improve second-language than living in the country where it is spoken. While studying in a foreign country, he will most likely meet many others from overseas and it is possible to make friends from all over the world. This is not only exciting on the social level, but could lead to important overseas contacts in his career as well. He can get familiar with the latest knowledge in science and make use of the first-rate facilities (设备) available. In this way, there is every chance that he is able to widen his horizon (眼界) and broaden his mind.
Of course, attending schools abroad may bring about a series of problems. The most serious problem is language barrier (障碍). Most of the students who go abroad don’t have enough skills in the language spoken there. As a result, on arriving there, they will find it difficult to understand what the teachers say. Besides, for lack of knowledge of the customs of the local people, they may constantly run into trouble in dealing with various situations.
Therefore, given an opportunity to attend a school abroad, one must consider both sides of the
第五部分: 书面表达(满分25)
阅读下面短文,然后按要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Why are so many people so afraid of failure? It is simply because no one tells us how to fail so that failure becomes an experience that will lead to growth. We forget that failure is part of being human and that every person has the right to fail.
Most parents work hard at either preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards. A mother describes her child’s carelessly-made table as “perfect”even though it doesn’t stand still. Another way is to blame something else. If John fails science, it is because his teacher is unfair or stupid.
Success, which encourages repetition of old behavior, is not nearly as good a teacher as failure. Even a failure that seems definitive(决定性的) can cause fresh thinking or a change of direction. After 12 years of studying ballet, a friend of mine applied to a professional company. She was turned down. “Would further training help?”she asked. The ballet master shook his head. “You will never be a dancer,”he said. “You haven’t got the body for it.”
In such cases, the way to use failure is to take stock bravely, asking, “What have I left? What else can I do?”My friend put away her shoes and moved into a dance treatment center, a field where she’s both able and useful.

It’s fine to fail
Failure is something people always try to avoid, without realizing that by facing it bravely, it’ll turn out to be great value in helping their growth.
It’s natural and normal that parents stop their children from experiencing failure. Anyway, it’s been widely accepted that, by means of appreciation and encouragement, children get inspired and tend to learn more. However, this idea ignores an actual fact that life consists of both success and failure. That’s why I believe that too much protection from failure may end up with more pain –it creates a fake world to kids, not a true one.
The ballet girl gives us a good example of how to face her big failure, from which we see clearly what life is really like: the great amount of time that you’ve devoted to your dream may turn out to be something wrong. The only choice you can make is to smile to it, think of what you can do with it, and decide to still go further or change your way of life. If you face it bravely enough, the failure will lead to “fresh thinking”, and possibly your life will turn on a new page.
Can success bring the same good to us? No. Failure is painful, but it makes us learn more about life. There’s no escape, and there’s no need to escape!

W: Hello, Thomas Brothers.
M: Hello, this is Mike Landon here. Is Jack Cooper there by any chance?
W: I am afraid not, he is away for a day or two, back on, let's see, Monday morning.
M: Oh, well perhaps I can live a message for him.
W: Yes, of course, just a minute. Now, let's see, to Jade Cooper from Mike London.
M: No, Landon, L-a-n-d-o-n, -
W: Sorry, yes, got that, and what's the message?
M: Well it's just this: could he come to a meeting on Monday afternoon at 5:00 pm?
W: That's this coming Monday, October 12th?
M: Right, it's to discuss the new factory in France.
W: Fine, I've got that. I will see that he gets it as soon as he comes in on Monday.
M: Good, thank you, goodbye
(Text 9)
M: Now, Mrs. Franks, I just like to read your statement back to you, and then you can write your name on it.
W: Fine.
M: I was standing in front of the Second National Bank building at about 8:50 a.m, I saw a small red car heading for the crossroads of Churchill Avenue, and York Road, it was coming towards me along Churchill Avenue at about 40 miles per hour. The traffic lights on York Road changed to green, and a delivery lorry began to move forward at about 5 miles per hour. The driver of the car probably didn't see that his traffic light has changed from orange to red, and ran into the side of the lorry.
W: That's correct.
