21.(6分)“Birds” and “airports” are two words that, paired together, don’t normally paint the most
harmonious picture. So it really raises some eyebrows when China announces plans to build an airport that is for birds.
D escribed as the world’s first-ever bird airport, the proposed Lingang Bird Sanctuary(保护区)in the northern coastal city of Tianjin is, of course, not an actual airport. Rather,it's a wetland preserve specifically designed to accommodate hundreds-even thousands-of daily takeoffs and landings by birds traveling along the East
Asian-Australian Flyway. Over 50 species of migratory (迁徙的)water birds, some endangered, will stop and feed at the protected sanctuary before continuing their long journey along the flyway.
Located on a former landfill site, the 150-acre airport is also open to human travelers.(Half a million visitors are expected annually.) However, instead of duty-free shopping, the main attraction for non-egg-laying creatures at Tianjin’s newest airport will be a green-roofed education and research center, a series of raised “observation platforms” and a network of scenic walking and cycling paths totaling over 4 miles.
“The proposed Bird Airport will be a globally significant sanctuary for endangered migrator y bird species, while providing new green lungs for the city of Tianjin.” Adrian McGregor of an Australian landscape architecture firm explained of the design. Frequently blanketed in smog so thick that it has shut down real airports, Tianjin is a
city---C hina’s fourth most populous----that would certainly benefit from a new pair of healthy green lungs•
1、The underlined phrase “non-egg-laying creatures” in Paragraph 3 refers to?
A.Visitors. B.Designers.
C.Endangered water birds. D.Planes.
2、What do we know about the airport according to the passage?
A.People cannot watch birds up close here.
B.It is located on a 150-acre landfill site.
C.It functions as an actual airport and a wetland preserve.
D.It provides migratory birds with food and shelter.
3、What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The airport will become a permanent home for birds.
B.Tianjin will win worldwide fame in the future.
C.Tianjin’s air quality will improve thanks to the airport.
D.Tianjin will be able to accommodate more people.
4、What is this passage mainly about?
A.Airports shut down and open up.
B.China is to open the first Bird Airport.
C.Airports turn into green lungs.
D.Birds are no longer enemies to airports.
22.(8分)Many people have bought insurance, either life or property (财产), commercial or compulsory. Yet some people know little about it and some even misunderstand its nature and function.
Insurance is the sharing of risks. Nearly everyone is exposed to a risk of some sort. The house owner, for example, knows that his property can be damaged by fire; the ship-owner knows that his ships may be lost at sea; the breadwinner knows that he may die at an early age and leave his family poorer. On the other hand, not every house is damaged by fire nor every ship is lost at sea. If these persons each put a small amount of money into a pool, there will be enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer losses. In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance. Those who pay the contribution are known as the insured and those who manage the pool of contributions as insurers.
The legal basis of all insurance is the policy. This is a printed form of contract on a piece of paper in best quality. It states that every year the insured shall pay an amount of money, which is called the premium; in return, the insurer will pay an amount of money or compensation for losses if the risk or event insured against actually happens.
The premium for insurance naturally depends upon how likely the risk is to happen, as suggested by past experience. If companies fix their premiums too high, there will be more competition in their area of insurance and they may lose business. On the other hand, if they make the premium too low, they will lose money and may even have to drop out of business. So the ordinary forces of supply and demand keep premiums at a level, satisfactory to both the insurer and the insured.
1、The underlined phrase in Para. 2 most probably means .
A.money paid by the insurers B.each premium
C.money paid by all those insured D.the cost of administering insurance
2、Insurance premiums do not become too high because .
A.not many people insure themselves
B.premiums depend on the risk of losses
C.insurers have to be more competitive
D.insurance companies can never lose money
3、According to the passage, insurance business gains profit because .
A.more and more people buy insurance B.the firms have sound management
C.the premium is increased year by year D.only a few of those insured suffer losses
4、The purpose of the passage is to .
A.explain an insurance policy B.introduce insurance business
C.persuade people to be insured D.warn people of possible losses
23.(8分)The minute Joe Serna walked into the Veterans Treatment Court, he could feel his shoulders tense up. He had come to turn himself in (自首).
Six months earlier, Serna had been arrested for driving after drinking and was required to report to Judge Lou Olivera’s court every two weeks to take a test and prove he hadn’t been drinking. Serna had passed every biweekly screening—until the week before. Positive. He decided to try to bluff his way out of trouble. “I never had a drink, Judge,” he told the court.
^Both Joe Serna and Judge Olivera were old soldiers, and Olivera had come to know and admire Serna as he participated in the court’s program to help old soldiers with drinking and addiction problems. And that was what had brought Serna back to Olivera’s court a week after his lie. “This guy is a fellow soldier,” he told himself. “I need to make this right.” So Serna stood before Olivera and admitted, “I lied, Judge. I was drinking.”
After countless combats and the memories of many “best buddies” losing their lives, 39-year-old Joe Serna left the army in 2013 with 18 years of service. But in truth, the terrible memories had never left him and would reappear in nightmares. And that’s the reason for his drinking. T o this day, being stuck in a closed space can cause flashbacks (突然重现) for Serna.
On the day when Serna admitted he had lied about drinking, the judge was moved and decided on the punishment: one night in jail.
The next night, Joe Serna was in a small cell and felt he would soon be flashing back to a terrible war. Then the door opened, and Judge Olivera came in. Serna was confused. But a few minutes later, he understood the judge had decided to spend the night with him. The two talked for hours about their service, their families, and their hopes for the future. At around one in the morning, Serna fell asleep. “He will be OK now,” the judge said to himself as he rolled up his shirt into a makeshift pillow.
1、Which can best replace the underlined words in the second paragraph?
A.explain without being disturbed B.get away with his wrong-doing
C.give the court a little trouble D.give up drinking in future
2、What made Serna decide to turn himself in?
A.His sickness in his shoulders. B.His admiration for Olivera.
C.Olivera’ s help and identity. D.The advice of Serna’s family.
3、What can we know about Joe Sema?
A.He didn’t admit his fault and thus got punished.
B.He lost his life direction and got himself drunk often.
C.He had planned to talk more with Olivera in the cell.
D.He joined the army when he was 21 years old.
4、What would be the best title for the text?
A.An Army of Two B.A Considerate Judge
C.Two Soldiers’ War Experience D.Honesty Is the Best Policy
24.(8分)The Nazca Lines are a series of large ancient geoglyphs (地画) in the Nazca Desert, in southern Peru. It is ranging from geometric patterns to drawings of different animals and stylized human-like forms. The ancient lines can only be truly taken in from high in the air, leaving generations puzzled as to how these precise works could have been completed long before the documented invention of human flight.
The Lines were first spotted when commercial airlines began flying across the Peruvian desert in the 1920,s. Who built them and what was their purpose? Are they roads, star pointers, maybe even a gigantic map? If the people who lived here 2,000 years ago had only a simple technology, how did they manage to construct such precise figures? Did they have a plan? These markings are like a vast puzzle.
The Nazca Lines are the most outstanding group of geoglyphs in the world. There are also huge geoglyphs in Egypt, Malta, United States (Mississippi and California), Chile, Bolivia and in other countries. But the Nazca geoglyphs, because of their numbers, characteristics, dimensions and cultural continuity as they were made and remade throughout a certain history period, form the most impressive archeological (考古学的) group.
The Nazca plain is unique for its ability to preserve the markings upon it, due to the combination of the climate (one of the driest on Earth, with only twenty minutes of rainfall per year) and the flat, stony ground which minimizes the effect of the wind at ground level. With no dust or sand to cover the plain and little rain or wind to erode (腐蚀) it, lines drawn here tend to stay drawn. These factors, combined with the existence of lighter-colored subsoil beneath the desert surface, provide a vast writing pad that is suited to the artist who wants to leave his mark eternal.
1、502.What can we know about the Nazca Lines from the first two paragraphs?
A.They were built as a big map.
B.They were formed by nature.
C.They are ancient lines in caves.
D.They are huge markings in a desert.
2、504.How many factors make the Nazca Lines the most impressive?
A.One. B.Two.
C.Three. D.Four.
3、506.Why are the Nazca Lines well preserved?
A.Because of the wind at ground level.
B.Because of the existence of soft soil.
C.Because of the climate and geography.
D.Because of the thick sand on the top.
4、508.What does the underlined word “eternal” probably mean? A.Non-stop. B.Ever-lasting.
C.Real-life. D.High-end.
