She was a Chinese American experimental physicist known for her work in radioactivity. She was a part of the Manhattan project where she helped develop the process of making U- 235 and U-238 from uranium (铀). She was a winner of the first Wolf Prize in Physics and was recognized as the Chinese Madam Curie.
● Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin (1910—1994)

Beck was a young skilled artist and lived a simple and peaceful life with his wife and two lovely sons. One night, his elder son developed a severe stomachache. Thinking he was only suffering from some common intestinal (肠内的) disorder, neither Beck nor his wife took it very seriously. But the boy died suddenly that night.
Knowing the death could have been avoided if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, Beck always felt guilty. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Beck could stand, and he turned to alcohol for help. In no time Beck became an alcoholic.
As the alcoholism progressed, Beck began to lose everything he possessed—his land, house, etc. Finally Beck died in a small bar. Hearing of Beck’s death, I thought, “What a totally wasted life! What a complete failure!”
As time went by, I began to revalue my earlier rough judgme nt. I knew Beck’s now adult son, Ernie. He was one of the kindest and most caring men I had ever known. I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.
I hadn’t heard Ernie talk much about his fa ther. One day, I gathered up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly, “As a child until I left home at 18, Beck came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said ‘love you, son’.”
Tears came to my eyes as I realized that I had been a fool to judge Beck as a failure.

B. Ernie’s decision to follow his father.
C. The influence of Ernie’s father’s death.
D. The reason why Ernie was kind and caring.
27. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To tell a sorrowful story.
B. To prove the value of family.
C. To show a father’s deep love.
D. To warn people of stomachache.

US scientists say they have poured cold water on the theory that washing hands with hot water kills more germs (细菌) than unheated water. The small study of 20 people found using water at 15℃ left hands as clean as water heated to 38℃.
National Health Service (NHS) recommends that people wash their hands in either cold or warm water. In this study, scientists at Rutgers University-New Brunswick wanted to find out if popular assumptions about the benefits of warm or hot water and official guidance
on hot water—given to the food industry in the US—held true. They asked 20 people to wash their hands 20 times each with water that was 15℃, 26℃ or 38℃. Volunteers were also asked to experiment with varying amounts of soap. Before they started the tests, their hands were covered in harmless germ. Researchers say there was no difference in the amount of germ removed as the temperature of the water or the amount of soap changed.
Prof Donald Schaffner said, “People need to feel comfortable when they are washing their hands but as far as effectiveness goes, this study shows us that the temperature of the water used did not matter.”
However, the researchers accept their study is small and say more abundant work is needed to determine the best ways to remove harmful bacteria.
In the UK, NHS experts say people can use cold or hot water to wash their hands. They say hands should be washed for at least 20 seconds and stress the importance of using enough soap to cover the whole surface of the hands. Their guidance focuses on rubbing hands together in various ways to make sure each surface of each hand is clean.
28. What does the underlined phrase “poured cold water on” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Proved
B. Created
C. Contradicted
D. Accepted
29. After they washed their hands with either hot or cold water, .
A. volunteers all talked about American food industry
B. volunteers nearly had the same amount of germ removed
C. volunteers still had much germ on their hands
D. volunteers all didn’t feel very comfortable
30. How does researchers feel about their study?
A. It is incomplete.
B. It is popular.
C. It is convincing.
D. It is abstract.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Using Cold Water Instead of Hot Water
B. How to Use Cold Water to Wash Hands
C. It Is Better to Wash Hands in Cold Water
D. Washing Hands in Cold Water as Good as Hot
D
In a time where power-banks and solar-power devices (设备) have become mainstream, a device that lets you charge gadgets (小物件) as you wish doesn’t sound very special. But while power-banks have to be charged the old way, and solar batteries need the sun to store energy, HandEnergy just needs a hand.
The working principle behind HandEnergy is that of a two-axis rotor gyroscope (双轴转子陀螺仪). “You may be familiar with the wrist-training device called the Powerball, which is a powerful handheld gyroscope,” HandEnergy co-founder Alex Novik told Digital Trends. “We came up with the idea of putting a battery, metal coil (线圈) and magnets (磁铁) inside a similar device for making electricity. We spent a year developing it, and finally arrived at one we were happy with.”
To use HandEnergy, users start by winding a starter ring. This sends a signal to drive the rotor, at which point they can start rotating (旋转) their wrists to keep the rotor spinning. The rotor inside HandEnergy spins at an average speed of 5,000 rotations per minute, conveying mechanical power to create electricity, and charging the built-in batteries. To charge a device, just hook it up to HandEnergy using a USB data line.
“We don’t necessarily think this will be something you use every day, because it takes around on e hour to reach full charge,” Novik says. “But it’s small enough to fit in your pocket, and you can use it anywhere.”
Actually, HandEnergy charges smartphones at the same speed as a power outlet (插座). The battery only has a capacity of 1,000 mAh, so it won’t charge your phone completely at a time, but it can surely keep it running for a while longer when you really need it. Plus, it uses clean, unlimited energy.
HandEnergy will be available for the masses in December 2017, at a price of 99 Euros. One thing is for sure—it beats paying thousands of dollars on a solar-powered battery-charging coat.
32. Why is HandEnergy considered to be special?
A. It’s able to charge a gadget anytime anywhere.
B. It produces clean energy on an unlimited basis.
C. It charges a gadget with users’ personal energy.
D. It’s so small that you can carry it with yourself.
33. The Powerball is mentioned in Paragraph 2 just in order to show .
A. how HandEnergy is produced
B. what HandEnergy looks like
C. what HandEnergy can do
D. how HandEnergy works
34. What is the disadvantage of HandEnergy?
A. It is difficult to create it.
B. It takes longer to charge it.
C. It can be used only once.
D. It produces too little energy.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards HandEnergy?
A. Supportive.
B. Disapproving.
C. Doubtful.
D. Unconcerned.

Family Unity—A Practical Approach Family life is an unavoidable demand of human beings.
A family—young or mature—sincerely wishes for happiness and unity. However, in this age, according to statistics, familial issues (家庭问题) are increasing greatly. 36 However, in my opinion, the family affairs demand a few proper measures with commitments from all family members. So here we mention two practices briefly.
37 All family responsibilities should be divided wisely among all family members. For example, in a traditional family, cooking task is assigned to mother, mowing (割草) effort to son, hosting by girls, financial struggle by father, etc. This practice wipes out any possibility of hate and envy in the family. 38
Set routines. Routines make life more organized. Research proves that a family performs best in active and regular routines. Apart from activeness and regularity, family routines are recommended to be simple as well. 39 General family routines include dining together, visiting parks at weekends, spending family time, and doing certain housework at fixed moments.
Most people urge to discover a proper way to protect their family from conflicts. 40 All of them should never be allowed to get worse; otherwise, they may damage the family — your near and dear ones. Therefore, before the conflicts overwhelm (压倒) the family,
the family should overcome the conflicts. The above steps are highly useful to avoid gaps (间隙) in family life.
A. Arrange family tasks reasonably.
B. Therefore, it greets peace and unity.
C. Have fun together on a regular basis.
D. Yet conflicts are an unavoidable part of family life.
E. In other words, they shouldn’t pressurize the members.
F. So building a strong family unity is a rather difficult task.
G. Family members should speak honestly and listen faithfully to each other.
