I was privileged to be on vacation for the last two weeks with my husband and two of our children. We stayed in two different hotels and had two very different experiences.
In the first hotel, the staff went about their duties in a perfunctory (敷衍的) fashion; they did exactly what they had to, no more and no less. They weren't rude but neither were they friendly. When asked about good walking trails (小路) in the area, they immediately said they didn't know. Yet it turned out that following the main road from the hotel's front driveway took us straight onto a very popular and beautiful trail!
Our second experience could not have been more different. The staff not only offered advice about best sites, best means of transportation and even where to get gas, but behaved very friendly as well. We were greeted like longlost friends when we walked back in at the end of a long day. I felt the obvious difference that concern could make, especially when we were away from home in unfamiliar surroundings. The first made us feel alienated,_the second comfortable.
We can be like the staff in the first hotel—doing what's necessary to get by, doing things without sincerity and fulfilling the letter of our responsibilities. We'll still get rewarded but we will be missing goodness. If we can be like the staff in the second hotel, we will get the pleasure of performing kindness, and that joy will deepen our relationship with the others who recognize our genuine care and concern. Putting in the effort of doing our best, we get a much greater experience in this world.
It was a wonderful vacation. Each location offered different opportunities for appreciating the beauty of nature. We enjoyed the lakes, mountains and historic cities. But we learned something beyond dates, facts and figures. We witnessed firsthand the difference between doing the bare minimum and investing (投入) your all in everything you do. It helped shape our perspective (看法) and our actions for the upcoming year.

Back in 1988, Red Delicious made up 70 to 80 percent of the domestic apple market. Over the years, farmers sold a lot of them because they looked great. But they had a floury texture (口感), and people want an apple that's firm, crisp and juicy. I started searching for the one. By 1994, threatened by varieties from Japan and New Zealand, the U.S. apple industry and Washington State University agreed that we had to grow our own.
First,we crosspollinated (为异花授粉) existing apples: Collect pollen from one flower, put it on the tip of a pencil eraser, and rub it into another. We crossed dozens of crisp, tasty varieties such as Gala, Fuji, and Pink Lady. But the best breed came out of Honeycrisp and Enterprise parents. The crossbred seeds grew into 5foot trees, and we grafted those onto rootstocks (根茎) to make them start producing quickly, and planted them in evaluation gardens. A few years later, they fruited—and we began tasting.
So I would walk down long rows of hundreds and thousands of trees, and when I found an attractive fruit, I'd bite, chew, and spit it out. Most were terrible, but when I found one with good texture and taste, I'd pick 10 or 20 or them. Then I put them in cold storage to see how they would hold up after a few months. After that, three or four researchers sat down and tasted every apple. We checked acidity and sugar levels, which can change over time, and tested firmness and crispness using instruments that measure pressure and cell breakdown.
When we found exactly what we wanted,we planted and tested them all over again. Eventually, we ended up with Cosmic Crisp. It can spend nine to twelve months in storage, and stay crisp, firm, juicy and sweet.

根据第二段第一、二句“First, we crosspollinated existing apples: Collect pollen from one flower, put it on the tip of a pencil eraser, and rub it into another. We crossed dozens of crisp, tasty varieties such as Gala, Fuji, and Pink Lady.”可知,我们对现存的苹果品种进行异花授粉,然后使很多鲜脆、美味的品种杂交;结合第二段第四句“The crossbred seeds grew into 5foot trees, and we grafted those onto rootstocks to make them start producing quickly, and planted them in evaluation gardens.”可知,人们把这些杂交种子培育成5英尺高的树,然后将其嫁接到根茎上使其迅速地开始生长,故B项正确。
答案:B

Imagine a life without a constant sense that you're running behind.Imagine not wishing for more hours in the day. We haven't always been this crazy with time. In fact, before the Industrial Revolution, people had jobs to do, and they did them at the natural time. However, the factories of the Industrial Revolution needed to have hundreds of people work at the same time. Businesses introduced clock time to their workforces.
Today, we don't need time discipline upon us—we do it ourselves because we're so busy. Time management, we believe, is the solution to our busyness. However, that works only in a finite (限定的) world. In our infinite world, when we complete more tasks, more take their places—send more emails, and get more replies. If we do more as a result of better managing our time, we just become busier.
Besides, as we seek to make full use of our time, we slice it into smaller parts. But when we spread our attention across many mini activities, we prevent ourselves from engaging deeply. We maintain a state of chaotic (混乱的) mental activity that is the opposite of the ideal psychological state, where attention is allowed to sink into an activity without distraction (分心). Think about your past few weeks. All the moments you had of real happiness came when you focused your attention on the moments.
You may still think that you'd be willing to feel busier and less happy as long as you could be effective. Actually, effectiveness comes from prioritization and achievement. When we prioritize well, we choose to do the right things. Yet strong time awareness makes us prioritize the urgent and immediate rather than the important. Time pressure also lowers our ability to
achieve. Research has shown that increased focus on time reduces our problemsolving abilities and our ability to give out imaginative solutions. It is true we will be able to do more things if we focus on managing our time, but we need more thinking, creativity and problemsolving skills.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
选项中有两项为多余选项。
If you're a gamer who's constantly glued to your phone, it could be time to ask for medical help.
On June 18, 2018, the World Health Organization(WHO) officially listed “gaming disorder” as a mental health condition. 16
“Video games are like a nonfinancial kind of gambling (赌博) from a psychological point of view,” Mark Griffiths, a professor from Nottingham Trent University in the UK, told the Associated Press (AP). “Gamblers use money as a way of keeping score, while gamers use points.”
17 “People need to understand this doesn't mean every child who spends hours in their room playing games is an addict, otherwise doctors are going to be flooded with requests for help,” Joan Harvey, a spokeswoman for the British Psychological Society, told AP.
18 For example, a 21yearold Chinese woman surnamed Wu in Guangdong Province went blind in one eye after playing the mobile game for a whole day. “On days when I have no work, I usually get up at 6 am, eat breakfast and play until 4 pm,” she told the South China Morning Post. “Then I'll eat something, have a nap (小睡) and play until 1 am.”
Wu isn't alone. According to a study published by China Youth Daily, about one in five young Chinese people play online video games for at least four to five hours per day. 19 In April 2018, the Ministry of Education issued a notice asking Chinese schools and parents to prevent students from becoming addicted to the Internet and games.
Other countries have also taken action. 20 Meanwhile, in Japan, some
mobile phones have a special mode for children that lets their parents control what games they can download and how long they can play.
A.This means it's now on the same list as other mental illnesses.
B.Thankfully, measures have been taken to deal with the problem.
C.We often see people around us playing games on their mobile phones.
D.In South Korea, children are forbidden to play video games after midnight.
E.WHO's main work is to improve the mental health of individuals and society.
F.But if you lose control over your gaming habits, you'll face serious problems.
G.However, it doesn't matter if you play your favorite game now and then.
