Unit 6 Natural Disaster (Reading 2)
I. Contents:
Good afternoon, teachers. It’s a great honor to stand here. T oday I’m going to talk about Reading 2 of Unit 6 Natural Disaster.
As we all know, background on the reformation of curriculum, Oxford English text book can connect the life and act closely, emphasize the interest and experiences of the Ss, the pictures are active and vivid. So does this text.
In reading 2 of unit 6, Ss will know some basic knowledge of the earthquake, and the emergency measures in earthquake.Also, the learned language points will be reviewed and the new language points will be represented in the following units. So this unit forms connecting links with a special meaning in this book.
II. Teaching aims
1. Aims on the knowledge
(1) T o teach the students some vocabulary of the natural disaster.
(2) Let Ss distinguish the different types of the same word.
(3) Let Ss finish the assessment in this unit.
2. Aims on the abilities
(1) T o develop Ss’ abilities of listening and readin g.
(2) T o train the Ss’ ability of working in groups.
(3) T o help the students learn how to use the words and expressions properly in different situations.
3. Aims on the emotion
(1) T o help the students to develop the awareness of protecting the environment and protecting themselves when disasters really come.
(2) Let Ss know what should do when disaster comes.
III. Important points
(1) Words: survivor, slight, scream, wildly, alive
(2) Phrases: run in all directions, try one’s best, calm down, in fea r, a moment of fear, be trapped, shout for help, in a great hurry
Ⅳ. Teaching aids
I will use a multi-media projector, a computer and a blackboard to help me achieve the aims above.
Ⅴ. Teaching methods
As we all know: the main instructional aims of Oxford English are to cultivate Ss’ abilities of listening and speaking and their good sense of the English language. So in this lesson I’ll mainly use “Task-based” teaching method, and communicated method, group cooperate method will also be used in this
period.
VI. Learning methods
I always believe that the Ss would learn more quickly and easily in a relaxed and agreeable atmosphere, and there has the evidence already proved it. With listening to the tape, learning words with pictures, and making own dialogs, Ss will acquire new knowledge with better effects.
Ⅶ. Teaching procedures
I’ll finish this lesson in five steps.
Step 1. Warm-up
1. Listen to the song <We are The World>
In order to attract the Ss’ attention and construct an atmosphere of learnin g English, I will let the students listen to the song <We are the world>, and tell Ss it is a song about our lovely world, and we should protect it since there are many natural disasters.
Purpose: English should be learnt w ith interest, and a song will make it well.
2. Free talk
Make a free talk between T and Ss about what should we do if we meet an earthquake.
Purpose: It is important for Ss to a w are the importance of protecting our environment and protecting ourselves when disasters really come.
Step 2. Presentation
Now I’ll mainly talk about this step.
1. Listen to the tape, and tick out the right order.
In order to make the text be more directly seen and easier to know, I’ll show 6 pictures about the situation happen in the text on my PPT, but in wrong order. Ss will listen to the tape carefully and then make a right order of these pictures. After listening, Ss tick out the order together and try to find and read aloud the sentences in the text to prove the order is right.
2. Lead in the key words and phrases in the text.
Use word “Earthquake” as a center to extend new words and expressions in the text: shake, in fear, in all directions, be trapped, in a great hurry, calm dow n, alive.
Since a good pronunciation is very important to communication, I plan to make the Ss read these words and expressions one by one and also prepared for the following dialog practices.
3. Word Study.
Since the T ask-based Language T eaching is widely promoted in English language teaching nowadays. I believe language should be learned as close as possible to how it is used in real life. So I will make the word study along with many flash pictures, examples and tasks.
4. Mention that we should protect our environment.
Step 3. Practice
Dialog making
Divide Ss into groups of four Ss. Let them make a dialog according to the text and try to use their imagination to make some differences. Find out which group performs best.
Purpose: Task-based teaching method is used here to develop Ss’ability of communication and also their ability of co-operation w ill be well trained.
Step 4. Consolidation
1. Read the new word and examples together.
2. Let Ss tell each other how many natural disasters they know. T ell their parents how many natural disasters they know after school.
Purpose: It is necessary for the Ss to do some extensive exercises after class to consolidate the knowledge they learned.
Step 5. Assessment
1. Finish the exercises on the paper
2. Let Ss make up their own story with all the words and phrases we learned in this lesson.
Purpose: To check the knowledge Ss have learned in this period.
Above is the lecture notes of my lesson, I hope my Ss will not only learn the knowledge, but also improve the ability of speaking, listening and so on. Anyway, as a future English teacher, I’ll always make every effort to make my class interesting, plentiful and vitality.
