My passage into eighties a few weeks ago gave me a moment’s reflection and the thought that I should watch how others in this situation have been affected. After a while it seemed to me that the first 80 years are the hardest.
Once you reach 80, everyone wants to carry your baggage and help you up steps. If you forget your name or anybody else’s name, or an appointment or your own telephone nu mber, or promise to be there places at the same, or you can’t remember how many grandchildren you have, you only need to explain that you are 80.
Being 80 is a lot better than being 70. At 70 people are mad at you for everything. At 80, you have a perfect excuse no matter what you do. If you act foolishly, it’s your second children. Everybody is looking for symptoms(症状)of your failing of the brain.
Being 70 is not fun at all. At that age they expect you to retire to a house in Florida and complain about your arthritis(关节炎)and you ask everybody to stop mumbling (咕哝)becau se you can’t understand them. (Actually your hearing is about 50% gone) .
If you survive until you are 80, every is surprised that you are still alive. They treat you with respect just for having lived so long. Actually they seem surprised that you
can walk and talk sensibly.
So please, folks, try to m ake it to 80. It’s the best time of life. People forgive you for anything. In response to the question of what years were the most difficult, an 80-year-old responded “those between 10 and 70.”
Life begins at 80.

A. They are not respected by other people.
B. They are afraid of death.
C. They can’t understand many things.
D. They are often forgetful.
44. The author wrote this passage in a _________ way.
A. humorous
B. serious

Gary Locke, 61, who comes from a Chinese background and even looks Chinese, became the new US ambassador (大使) to China.

Neil Armstrong
On the way there: Of all the wonderful views we had, the most impressive to me was on the way to the Moon when we flew through its shadow. We were still thousands of miles away, but close enough so that the Moon almoet filled our window. The Moon appeared blue-grey. It seemed almost as if it were showing us its roundness, its similarity in shape to our Earth, in a sort of welcome. I was sure it would be a hospitable host. It had been waiting for its first visitors for a long time.
After touch down:The sky is black, you know. It’s a very dark sky, but it still seemed more like daylight than darkness as we looked out the window. It’s a very strange thing but the surface looked very warm and inviting. It seemed to be tan(棕褐色). It’s hard to explain that, because later when I held the material in my hand, it wasn’t tan at all.It was black, grey and so on.

On the Moon:The blue colour of my boots has completely disappeared now into this soil-still don’t know what colour to describe this other than greyish(带灰色的) cocoa.
