It is most difficult for parents to decide whether to have a second child or not.
It is often heard that a single child is likely to be a lonely child. There are no other children in the family for the child to talk to or play with. An only child is not able to get along well with children of his age. Some parents feel sad about making the decisions to have only one child.
But the number of parents choosing to have only one child is increasing in many parts of the world. In the US, for example, more than14 percent of women between 18 and 34 plan to have just one child. The same can be seen in the UK. In Japan, the average(平均) number of children born per family had gone down to 1.42 by 1996.
For some single-child parents, especially who are busy working every day, time and energy seem to be overwhelming. They don’t have enough time and energy to share with more children. It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers(祖先) had lived in the same way for centuries.
Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frogs’ legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.
This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was to catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn’t last long.
The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and there seemed to be more insects around lately.
The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides(杀虫剂) and medicine. Soon there was no money left.
Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frogs. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more quickly. They were dreaming the crops and spreading diseases.
Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of night now have a much deeper meaning.

“Please take my penny,” said Maggie to old Dan, the fisherman, who sat on a bench repairing his nets.
Her brother Andrew drew her back, whispering, “Maggie, he is not a beggar (乞丐)!”
But Maggie paid no attention. “Please take it,”she said again. Old Dan smiled, and took it. “Thank you, little miss,”he said, “I t is kindly meant.”
After that, Maggie went to the beach to gather shells. She never thought how fast the hours were passing until being tired. She sat down on a rock. Soon she was scared because the sea water was going up. She wanted to go home, but she found the places she had gone down easily very difficult to climb up. The stones were wet and smooth. What could poor Maggie do? She felt sad and cried.
Luckily, Dan’s large dog Rover jumped down from a rock! Rover raised his loud bark. The fisherman had taken his nets to the top of the cliffs (悬崖), and was laying them out in the sun when he heard the loud barking of a dog. He felt sure that it was Rover, and Rover was in trouble, so he looked over. There he saw it all.
“Bless her! It is the little one that was so kind-spoken to me this morning!” he cried, and he hurried to his sons’ rooms.
“Quick, boys, quick!” he said. “Get to the boat, and row fast to the sea. There is a poor child there just waiting to be helped.” The fishermen lost no time, and soon little Maggie and Rover were rowed safely to land! Old Dan was waiting there to lift her out to give her into her mother’s arms.
“It was the penny that did it, madam,” he said to Mrs. Weston later. “I saw Rover looking at her when she put the penny. And I am thinking he had been looking after her all the day.”

No one wants to overspend on their supermarket shopping but to save money every week.
Preparations start before you even go into the store. Here is how to make sure you are always getting your shopping for the best price.
●Create your list.
Write a full list which includes two parts, something necessary for a living and something for fun. With a strict list you won’t easily change your mind to buy more than you need.
●Check the cupboards.
One of the easiest ways to overspend is buying what you don’t need. Before leaving, take time to check what products you have in the house, especially in the cupboards. Buy what you badly need and it will help you save money before you step into the supermarkets.
●Know your budget(预算)
Keep in mind how much you plan to spend. It is possible to get your shopping for less, but you need to wisely pay attention to the products and brands you buy to support savings.
●Compare prices
You should make a comparison between the prices offered by different supermarkets. So if you try to buy your shopping for less, compare the prices in different shops, which makes sure that you are always visiting the cheapest supermarket for your shop.
●Choose the best time for shopping
If you know your supermarket well, there will certainly be a preferred time to shop. This could be at the quietest time to make sure you get peace while working out the total cost of your shopping.
