‘Kangaroo mothering’ helps boost a child’s health and intelligence
“Kangaroo mothering”, the practice of continuous skin-to-skin contact with a newborn baby, results in healthier, more intelligent and successful children, a new study finds.
A 20-year follow-up research found that those brought up in the kangaroo method scored higher in IQ tests and earned 53% more. They were also found to be less likely to have behavior problems than babies in a control group.
Followers of the method nest their kids in a “kangaroo” position on their chest
as soon as possible after birth. Both mother and baby are supposed to go home as quickly as possible.
The technique is often used in cases of premature birth (早产). In such cases, the trained mother acts as the child’s main source of stimulation (刺激) and food, in the form of breast feeding. Between 1993 and 1996, a group of more than 700 prematurely born babies in Columbia were, on the basis of random selection, placed either away from mother or were raised using the kangaroo method. Two decades later, a follow-up survey funded by the Canadian Government has shown that those who went through the latter method benefited by comparison.
Published in the journal Paediatrics, the research shows that kangaroo mothering o ffered significant protection against early death, with a 3.5% death rate compared to a 7.7% rate in the control group. IQ test also showed a small but significant advantage of 3.5% compared to other infants.
Lead researcher Dr Nathalie Charpak, of the Kangaroo Foundation in Bogota, said the method has “significant, long-lasting social and behavioral protective effects”. “We firmly believe that this is a powerful, efficient, scientifically based healthcare intervention that can be used in all settings, from those with very restricted to unrestricted access to healthcare.”
The study also found that, compared with babies in the control group, those raised in the kangaroo method went on to develop bigger brains, with significantly larger volumes of gray matter.
1、According to the passage, what is “kangaroo mothering”?
A.Mothers trying their best to improve their babies’ IQs.
B.Mothers raising their babies in bags like kangaroos.
C.Mothers staying in touch with their babies early and constantly.
D.Mothers breastfeeding their babies instead of using milk powder.
2、The underlined word “infants” in Paragraph 5 probably means ____.
A.children B.kangaroos C.parents D.researchers
3、What is Dr Nathalie Charpak’s attitude toward Kangaroo mothering? A.Sceptical. B.Neutral. C.Disapproving. D.Supportive.
4、This passage shows that Kangaroo mothering can ____.
A.give children bigger heads
B.benefit children’s brain growth
C.reduce the number of premature births
D.solve school children’s behavioral problems
(8分)When Randy Heiss went hiking behind his Patagonia, Ariz. farm, the 22.
last thing he expected to find was a Christmas list from a little girl across the US-Mexico border. “I found this balloon on my morning walk near Patagonia on Sunday. Attached to it was a piece of paper with the Christmas wishes from a little girl,” Heiss wrote on his Facebook page.
When he brought the list home to his wife, who speaks fluent Spanish, they determined that the little girl had asked for Enchantimals toys, clothes, art supplies and various other gifts. That's when Heiss set out to make the little girl's Christmas dreams come true. Heiss said he had attempted to send Christmas letters to Santa Claus via balloon when he was a kid but never received a response.
Heiss sent a Facebook message on Wednesday to XENY, a radio station in Nogales, to see if it could help him track down the girl or her family. He later received a response from the station, which had determined the author of the letter was an 4-year-old girl named Dayami, and the station wanted to set up a meeting between the two on Thursday. “It just changed my entire day,” Heiss told the Washington Post. “Instead of going back to my office in Bisbee, I went with my wife to Walmart. “
The couple bought almost everything on Dayami's list. They also brought a few gifts for Dayami's little sister, Ximena. They told the children they were “ ayudantes de Santa,” or Santa's helpers.
Heiss,20, said the experience was very healing for him and his wife. Nine years ago,the couple's only son died. “ Being around children at Christmas time has been absent in our lives,” Heiss said. We now have friends for life. For a day, that border fence with its concertina wire melted away.

(8分)When you need to see a doctor, surely you will want to see a good one. But 24.
there is one important thing you may never have thought about: Has your doctor rested enough?
Doctors in our country often have to work 34 hours or longer without sleep. Most of them work 104 hours a week, and some even 150. (There are only 168 hours a week!) One report said that a doctor who works such long hours cannot think more clearly than a drunk driver. Another found that doctors who sleep 5.8 fewer hours than the week before might make 22% more serious mistakes. Surely no one wants to get in a car that is driven by a drunk driver. So, how safe would you feel when you are under the care of a tired doctor?
Sadly this problem has been around for a long time. There are no laws about it yet an d hospital bosses don’t look like they care either. And that is why we doctors are asking you to join us on the street this Sunday. Fight together with us on the street so we can fight better for your life in the hospital.

25.(10分)It seems that we are one step closer to finding alien life and maybe a future home for humanity. Scientists from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) have found a new solar system filled with planets that look like Earth and could even support life.
The group of seven planets, which orbits a star called Trappist-1, is 40 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Aquarius(水瓶座). And three of them are in the so-called “habitable (宜居的)zone” ----the area around a star where liquid water is most likely to be found. This is important because water is a necessary ingredient for life.
All of the planets were found using a meth od called “transit photometry.” This works by watching out for when a planet passes in front of its host start. This blocks out a small amount of light, allowing us to see the planet and learn about its size.
“This is an amazing planetary system---not only because we have found so many planets, but because they are all surprisingly similar in size to the Earth,” astronomer Michael Gillon from the University of Liege in Belgium told The Independent.
Trappist-1 is a “dwarf star (矮星)” which is colder and shines dimmer than our sun. If a person were on one of the seven planets, everything would look a lot darker than usual. The amount of light heading toward our eyes would be about 200 times less than we get from the sun, according to The Independent.
Because of that, Trappist-1, together with many other dwarf stars, was never on the list of places where scientists look for alien life. but Michael Gillon, lead researcher behind the discovery, decided to give dwarf stars a chance. He built a telescope in Chile to observe 60 of the closest dwarf stars, and it turned out that Trappist-1 was worthy of the effort.
The researchers hope that they can spend more time watching the newly found planets to learn more about them. Even though more research is needed before determining whether these planets could really support life, the discovery is still encouraging. It shows just how many Earth-size planets could be out there.
“The discovery gives us a hint that findin g a second Earth is not just a matter of if, but when,” NASA scientist Thomas Zurbuchen told the Telegraph.
1、Which of the following statements is TRUE about the newly found planets?
A.It will take human beings about 40 years to travel to them

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear classmates,
May I have your attentio n please? Now I’d like to make a speech here.
Nowadays, some of us have formed some bad habits on campus. For example, some students leave the lights on in the daytime, or let water running after washing. Some leave over much food on the table after eating. Besides, waste paper and spoiled books can be seen everywhere. So it is high time that we had to deal with the problems.
As we all know, these bad habits will have a bad influence on our character and behavior. What’s more, we can not only increase our c ost at school and add financial burden to our parents, but also waste the limited resources. But how to reduce the waste? In my opinion, we should start with ourselves to save everything. Here, I’d like to remind my classmates to take the lead in reducing the waste.
Therefore, I’m sure, with everyone doing his bit, we will change the present situation.
That’s all. Thank you!。
