Jobs and work do much more than most of us realize to provide happiness and contentment. We're all used to thinking that work provides the material things of life—the goods and services that make possible our modem civilization. But we are much less conscious of the degree to which work provides themore important psychological well-being that can make the difference between a full and an empty life.
Historically, work has been associated with slavery and sin 〔罪恶〕and punishment. And in our ownday we are used to hearing traditional complaints.Against this background, it may well come as a surpriseto learn that not only psychologists but other behavioral scientists have come to accept the positivecontribution of work to the individual's happiness and sense of personal achievement.Work is more than anecessity for most human beings; it is the focus of their lives, the source of their identity and creativity.
Rather than a punishment or a burden, work is the opportunity to realize one' s potential. And theopposite is true, too.For large numbers of people, the absence of work is harmful to their health.Retirement often brings many problems surrounding the " What do I do with myself?" question, eventhough there may be no financial cares.Large numbers of people regularly get headaches and otherillnesses on weekends when they don't have their jobs to go to, and must take care of themselves. It hasbeen observed that unemployment, quite apart from financial pressures, brings enormous psychologicaltroubles and that many individuals' conditions become worse rapidly when jobless.
But why? Why should work be such a significant source of human satisfaction? A good share of theanswer rests in the kind of pride that is stimulated by the job, by the activity of accomplishing.
63.Which of the following statements can NOT be learned from the passage?
A.People feel happier and more content than they realize when working.
B.Work is likely to provide you with chance of achieving your potential.C.Happiness can only be gained through working.
D.A lot of people will suffer physically and psychologically without work.64.Traditionally, people are used to believing _______.
A.work is related to negative aspects
B.happiness has nothing to do with work
C.identity and creativity depend on work
D.work is not only a necessity for humans but the focus of our life 65.What would the author probably discuss in the following paragraph?
A.What the proper way to balance work and life is.
B.How work brings people pride in accomplishment.
C.Which is more important: the material things of life or psychological
well-being.
D.How people overcome the problems arising from retirement.
66.Which best describes the author's attitude towards work in the passage?
A.Doubtful.B.Concerned.
C.Approving.D.Neutral.
D
Great amounts of antibiotics 〔抗生素〕 were found in eight batches 〔一批〕 of raw chicken samplestaken from KFC supplier Shandong Liuhe Group from 2010 to 2011 , the Shanghai Food Safety Office saidin a recent statement. From 2010 to 2011, a total of 19 batches of raw chicken samples from the LiuheGroup were tested, and eight of them were found to contain excessive 〔过量的〕 amounts ofantibiotics. The statement of the Shanghai Food Safety Office came after China Central Television reportedon Dec.18 that some chicken farms in Shandong Province fed the birds with excessive amounts ofantibiotics to reduce their death rate and shorten their growing period.Animal nutrition experts said that chemical compound medicines, most antibiotics and hormones arebanned from being fed to chickens. The experts added that some chickens are fed with large amounts ofantibiotics because many Chinese farmers don't have the money or want to spend the money to raise thebirds in larger and cleaner places. The CCTV report said that the chickens, which had poor health conditions and reached full growthwithin about 40 days, were sold to the Liuhe Group and Yingtai Co., both KFC suppliers. After theCCTV report set off public concern over the safety of the birds supplied to KFC, the Shanghai Food andDrug Administration carried out tests after taking 32 samples of raw chicken products belonging to YumBrands in Shanghai.
"Severe punishments will be handed out if any violation of food safety laws is found," the ShanghaiFood Safety Office said. And it added, "Further investigations will also be made on the testing body-Shanghai Institute for Food and Drug Control, and we will carry out the most strict accountability 〔问责〕
procedures on it."
67.Which of the following is NOT the reason why antibiotics were used?
A.The death rate of the chickens can be reduced.
B.The growing period of the chickens can be shortened.
C.Fanners don't have enough money to improve their chicken farms.
D.Fanners think chickens fed with antibiotics healthier.

VI. 书面表达:
Lin Shuhao, known as Lin-sanity, a famous basketball player on active service
in NBA, was born in America on August 23rd,1988.
He displays his talent for basketball, which is sweeping across the United States.
His motto may help us find the reasons why he turns out to be a success so quickly.
He never denies himself and tries to seize the important opportunity when it comes up. He thinks it is important to stay modest all the time. Besides, he believes one
can succeed by working harder than others.
It is his devotion to basketball and working hard that lead to his achievement.
If he hadn’t trained crazily or believed in himself, he could hardly have made his dream come true.
听力原文:
1. M: Did Mary come?
W: Yes, she did. She said she would come again next Friday.
2. W: I heard on the radio that the storm is getting nearer.
M: If the weatherman is as exact as usual, it will probably be sunny all day.
3.W: I know you don’t have much time left. I believe if you take Bus 209 instead
of Bus 3, you can save an hour.
M: You’re right. It takes only 4 hours to get to Los Angeles on Bus 209.
4. W: Mark, you look worried. What’s the matter?
M: I’ve lost $200. I should have been more careful. I just left it on the bank counter for a moment, and then it suddenly disappeared.
5. W: I’m looking for Mr. Smith.
M: I’m Mr. Smith.
W: I want to find a job as a housekeeper.
M: Have you worked in a hotel?
W: No, but I can make beds, and I clean very well.
6. M: Have you seen my school bag, Mom? I’ve been looking for it everywhere.
W: I hope you didn’t leave it in school. You never know where you put your things.
Where did you last see it?
M: Last night before I went to bed, I think. I remember putting it on the desk. W: Really? If you put it there, it should still be there. No one has been to your room. So it must be here somewhere.
M: Yes, but where? That’s what I want to know. Oh, dear, it’s about time for the school bus.
W: Hey, what’s that under your blanket at the foot of your bed?
7. M: Why didn’t your uncle fly?
W: It would have cost $65. The train fare is only $21.
M: That’s really a big difference.
W: Well, if the train doesn’t arrive till 9:50, we have 25 minutes to wait. Do you want to go into the coffee shop?
M: Not unless you do. I’d rather buy a magazine and sit down and read.
W: A good idea. We can start watching for Uncle Tom around 9:45.
M: What does he look like?
W: He’s about your height and about your weight. He’s around 55, maybe older. M: OK. I’m going to buy a magazine. Wait here till I come back.
8. M: Hello, do you have a minute?
W: Sure.
M: I’m Lee and I study in PekingUniversity. Nice to meet you!
W: Nice to meet you, too. My name is Lynn O’Neil. You can call me Lynn directly. M: OK, Lynn, what is your nationality?
W: I’m American. I was born in Spain but was brought up in the US.
M: Do you speak Spanish? You said you were born there.
W: No. Neither of my parents is Spanish and they left there before I could talk.
You know, it’s really hard to start learning a new language if nobody around you speaks that language.
M: Yeah, that’s true. Do you come here for study or simply on a visit?
W: For study, of course. I majored in Asian Study when I was in CaliforniaUniversity. M: By the way, how long have you been in China?
W: Ah… Only three months. I came here immediately after graduation.
9. M: That’s our table over there by the window.
W: Wow! What a romantic place, Doug!
M: Yeah, I wanted to…Look out for the candle! Your coat is on fire!
W: Oh, no! Quick, give me some water! (Sally puts the fire out.) There, it’s out. M: Are you OK? Your beautiful coat.
W: It’s no big deal. I need a new coat anyway. Let’s just sit down and order. M: We don’t need to order. They have a set meal for Valentine’s Day called the “Sweetheart Special〞!
W: Really? I can’t wait. This looks like a really fancy restaurant.
M: Well, I wanted some place special. You know, I really like you, Sally.
W: I can tell—Cupid’s arrow really found you, didn’t it?
M: I’ve been head over heels for you ever since we met, and show you how I feel—I brought these for you!
W: Thanks a…a…a…Achoo! I’m sorry I didn’t tell you—but I’m allergic to roses! M: Sorry! I’ll take them back then. Are you OK?
W: I’ll be fine—as soon as I stop sneezing…Achoo!
10. W: Well, Mr. Smith, we have had an interesting discussion about your work. Now,
tell us something about your after-work activities.
M: I guess not much different from everyone else. I’m interested in sports, and
I run about 3 miles every day. I particularly enjoy cross-country running, where
I have to run across fields, jump over streams and so on. While I’m running
I think about all sorts of things, and at the end of a run I’m sometimes surprised
to find that I’ve managed to solve a problem that was on my mind.
Next year I’m going to try the London Marathon. It’s a long, hard race—26 miles, or 42 kilometers——and you have to be tough to finish, but I very much want to do it. I worry a bit about getting old, and I’d like to prove to myself that I’m still almost as fit as I was twenty years ago.
I’m interested in climbing as well as running. I’ll never become an expert climber, but I know what I’m doing in the mountains. I successfully completed
a course in snow and ice climbing when I was younger, and I’ve done some easy
climbs in the Alps during the last few years. My wife doesn’t share my interest in mountains. She agreed to go climbing with me once, but she found that she felt ill as soon as she got above 1,000 meters, so we decide to follow different hobbies.。
