The island of Lanai is one of Hawaii’s best kept secrets. With its old country beauty, rocky land, empty beaches and forests, the island of Lanai is like an attractive Colorado Village in the middle of the Pacific. What to see
In fact, you’ll need a 4-wheel sightseeing bus to get to most of the island’s attractions. Lanai offers 400 miles of rocky dirt roads that lead you through rainforests, up to Mount Lanaihale---the island’s highest point, through a tour of ancient rock paintings, and to the island’s famous Garden of the Gods.
If you want to experience the local island color, head to Lanai City, the island’s only town and home to nearly all of its 3,000 people. The attractive little town offers pop shops, local art and small cafes. Accommodation (住宿) choices
Lanai only has three hotel choices: one beautiful historical village and two Four Seasons resorts (度假胜地). Stay one night in Hotel Lanai, the smallest and cheapest of the choices, and you’ll feel like you stepped back to old Hawaii.
The two Four Seasons resorts offer different characters of the island. The Lanai at Manele Bay is the island’s beachside resort that faces a near-sea preserve (保存区). The second Four Seasons resort, The Lodge at Koele, covers over 80㎡ of rolling hills, gardens and trees. You’ll need a blanket to stay warm at night. It feels like a very different Hawaii.
How to get there
With all its beauty, getting to Lanai is no easy task. If you are
planning a trip there, you ’ll have to fly into the island of Mauri and catch a boat that leaves from Lahaina five times a day, or you can catch one of Hawaiian Airline ’s daily flights. 21. What can you find in Lanai City?
A. Empty beaches.
B. Rainforests.
C. Pop shops.
D. Rock paintings.
22. If you don ’t have much money for accommodations, you can choose ______________.
A. Hotel Lanai
B. The Lanai at Manele Bay
C. The Lodge at Koele
D. Garden of the Gods 23. Which of the following is a Four Seasons resort?
A. Mount Lanaihale.
B. Garden of the Gods.
C. Hotel Lanai.
D. The Lodge at Koele. 24. Lahaina is located on the island of _____________. A. Manele B. Mauri C. Lanai D. Colorado B
LONDON (Reuters) ---Organic fruit, carried right to the doorstep. That is what Gabriel Gold prefers (更喜欢), and he is willing to pay for it. If this is not possible, the 26-year-old computer technician will spend the extra money at the supermarket to buy organic food.
“Organic produce is alw ays better,〞 Mr. Gold said. “The food is free of pesticides(杀虫剂), and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms. And more often than not it is locally grown and seasonal, so it is more tasty.〞 Mr. Gold is one of a growing number of shoppers buying into the organic trend, and supermarkets across Britain are depending on (依赖) more like him as they grow their organic food business. But how many shoppers really know what they are getting, and why are they willing to pay a higher price for organic produce? For example, small amounts of pesticides can be used on organic produce. And about three quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported (进口) to meet the growing need. “The demand for organic food is increasing(增加) by about one third every year, so it is a very fast-growing market.〞 Said Sue Flock, a specialist in this line of business. 25. When David Hyche was helping his local church plan an annual Easter egg hunt nine years ago, he realized his then 19-month-old blind daughter Rachel would not be able to fully take part in it. He decided to look for a way for his daughter to experience an Easter egg hunt just like her normal-sighted older brother.
David then researched online on how a blind child could do an Easter egg hunt and have fun with it. He found there were people who could make beeping (有哔哔声的) eggs. He then called a man in Los Angeles and the man told him how he did it. David then thought he could spreading beeping eggs around the world.
He made forty beeping eggs that year and sold them at a price of $14 per egg. Each egg took him about 20 minutes to make. It contains a switch (开关), a beeper, and a 9-volt battery, joined together by wires (导线).
A handful of blind kids, Rachel included, showed up at the first beeping Easter egg hunt hosted by David in Birmingham nine years ago. Hoping to spread it further, David employed his coworkers and friends throughout Alabama to help him make more beeping eggs. This year, three beeping Easter egg hunts were held in Birmingham alone, with dozens more held across the country.
Around six years ago, David’s idea drew an ally (同盟) in the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators (IABTI). IABTI’s members collect the eggs and then send them to the requesting groups. Each egg now costs $10 to make, according to the IABTI, which posts a step-by-step explainer on its website.
“A lot of schools for the blind use the eggs to teach kids how to locate (位) things because it teaches them to use a logical mind to search,〞 said David. “It’s teaching these kids independence,〞 he said. “It’s not just an Easter egg hunt like it is for other people.〞29. Why did David want to make the beeping Easter egg at first?
A. To plan a special Easter egg hunt.
B. To make his daughter enjoy an Easter egg hunt.
C. To drew people’s attention to an Easter egg hunt.
D. To provide beeping Easter eggs for blind children.
30. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Rachel is 9 years old now.
B. It is not too hard for David to make a beeping egg.
C. David learned how to make a beeping egg by chance.
D. Few children were interested in the beeping egg at first.
31. David asked his coworkers and friends to help_________________.
A. raise money
B. send finished eggs
C. make beeping eggs
D. post an explainer online
32. Why do so many schools for the blind use beeping eggs? .
A. Because they help blind kids to be independent.
B. Because an egg hunt is a lot fun like it is for others.
C. Because they are easy to locate for the blind.
D. Because a logical mode is used in making them.
D
Running as often and as far as possible might sound like great training, but it’s a way to get injured, ill or lose your motivation (动机) before a big race. “Training for any goal is about planning, patience and progression,〞 says running coach Tom Craggs. “Coaches often talk about the ‘TNR’: Training, Nutrition and Rest---- and the y’re all equally important.〞
Rest lets your body change and improve and it’s an opportunity for your muscles, tendons (腱) and ligaments (韧带) to repair and your lung capacity (肺活量) to increase. “It’s when all the hard work you’ve done gets successful to make you a fitter, stronger runner,〞 says Craggs. “And the greater the distance of your running is, the more important rest becomes.
If you’re really enjoying running, or if you’re anxious about being fit enough to achieve a certain time for a race, avert running daily. “Think quality, not quantity,〞 says Craggs. “And if you’ve missed a few periods of time, don’t try to catch up. Simply begin your training schedule again on the right day. Running too much or too often won’t benefit your performance; you’ll just be doing what we call ‘junk miles’.〞
Schedule a rest day after any hard training. Avoid back-to-back tough sessions (集会) such as hills or intervals. “For experienced athletes, a rest day might include a gentle recovery run or cross training, but for most of us, it means the sofa,〞 he explains.
It is also important to get enough sleep. Aim for at least six hours of good sleep a night, finishing as many of those as you can before midnight. You may find caffeine, alcohol and sugar affect getting to
sleep. Likewise, eating or exercising too late at night can have negative effects.
33. What Tom Craggs says in Paragraph 2 shows that ___________________. A. tendons and ligaments can easily get hurt
B. the greater the distance we run, the better it is
C. becoming a fitter and stronger runner is difficult
D. we should allow our bodies to rest after exercising
34. What does the underlined world “avert 〞 in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Try.
B. Keep.
C. Avoid.
D. Consider.
35. What may a rest day mean to experienced athletes? . A. Back-to-back tough sessions. B. Resting comfortably on the sofa.
C. Some other kinds of hard training.
D. Receiving some other kinds of training.
