When Mary Moore began her high school in 1951,
her mother told her,
“Be sure and take a typing course so when this show busines
s thing doesn’t work out,
you’ll have something to rely on. ”Mary responded in typical te enage fashion. From that moment on,
“the very last thing I ever thought about doing was taking a ty ping course,”she recalls.
The show business thing worked out,
of course. In her career,
Mary won many awards. Only recently,
when she began to write Growing Up Again,
did she regret ignoring her mom. “I don’t know how to use a c omputer,”she admits.
Unlike her 1995 autobiography,after all,
her second book is less about life as an awardwinning actress and more about living with diabetes(糖尿
病).All the money from the book is used for the Juvenile Dia betes Research Foundation (JDRF),
an organization she serves as international chairman. “I felt th ere was a need for a book like this,”she says. “I didn’t want t o lecture,
but I wanted other diabetics to know that things get better whe n we’re self-
controlled and do our part in managing the disease.”
But she hasn’t always practiced what she teaches. In her boo
k,she describes that awful day, almost 40 years ago, when she received two pieces of life-changing news. First, she had lost the baby she was carrying and second, tests (化验)showed that she had diabetes. In a childlike act,she left the hospital and treated herself to a box of doughnuts (甜甜圈).
Years would pass before she realized she had to grow up—again—and take control of her diabetes,
not let it control her. Only then did she kick her three-pack-a-day cigarette habit, overcome her addiction to alcohol,
and begin to follow a balanced diet.
Although her disease has affected her eyesight and forced he r to the sidelines of the dance floor,
she refuses to fall into self-
pity. “Everybody on earth can ask,
‘why me?’about something or other,”she insists. “It doesn’t do any good. No one is immune (免疫的) to heartache pain, and disappointments. Sometimes we can make things better by helping others. I’ve come to realize the importance of that as I’ve grown up this second time. I want to speak out and be as helpful as I can be.”
29. Why did Mary feel regretful?
A. She di dn’t achieve her ambition.
B. She didn’t follow
her mother’s advice.
C. She didn’t complete her high school.
D. She didn’t take care of her mother.
30. We can know that before 1995 Mary ________.
A. had two books published
B. supported the J DRF by writing
C. knew how to use a computer
D. received ma ny career awards
31. Mary’s second book Growing Up Again is mainly about he r ________.
A. service for an organization
B. successful show b usiness
C. living with diabetes
D. remembra nce of her mother
32. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Mary wants to help others as much as possible.
B. Mary has recovered from her disease.
C. Mary feels pity for herself.
D. Mary determines to go back to the dance floor

Scientists have found what look like caves on Mars(火
星), and say they could be protecting life from the planet’s terr ible environment.
The first caves discovered beyond the Earth appear as seven mysterious black dots on the pictures sent back by NASA’s M ars Odyssey orbiter. Each as large as a football field, they ma y be openings into natural caves below the Martian surface.“If there is life on Mars, there is a good chance you’d find it in caves,” said Jut Wynne, one of the researchers who noticed t he features while working on a US Geological Survey Mars C ave Detection Program.
Jonathan Clarke, a geologist with the Mars Society of Australi a, yesterday described the discovery as exciting.
One photo taken at night by an infrared imager(红外线成像器) showed one hole to be unusually warm, suggesting hot air trapped during the day is flowing out.
“I said: ‘Wow,that’s a cave. ” Dr. Clarke said excitedly. “Peopl e have been looking for these for a long time; now we have fo und them.”
He agreed such caves would be perfect places to hunt for life escaping from the bitterly cold, radiation-soaked(充满辐射的),dry surface.
“Tiny drops of water could collect inside,” he said. “If there are
gases coming out, they could provide energy for a whole ran ge of bacteria. A cave is also a protection from radiation; the s urface of Mars is exposed to high levels of space radiation. The caves probably formed when tube-shaped lava flows(管状岩浆
流) spread across the planet long ago. The outside of the tube s cooled, forming solid walls, while something hotter inside all owed the remaining lava to flow out, forming caves.”
33. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. How the caves were formed on Mars.
B. How scientists found these caves on Mars.
C. Scientists have completely recognized the surface of Mars.
D. Caves on Mars may be full of hot air or a sign of life.
34. According to the passage, Dr. Clarke was so excited beca use _________.
A. they had finally found the caves on Mars
B. such caves could provide energy for life
C. such caves would be perfect places to hunt for life
D. scientists had long been looking for these caves
35. Necessary condition for life on Mars mentioned in the pas sage may include _________. .
A. lava and energy
B. water and protection from radiation
C. gases and lava
D. water and radiation from space

There are thousands of coral reefs(珊瑚
礁) in the world; Unfortunately, however, they are now in serio us danger. More than one-
third are in such bad shape that they could die within ten year s. 36 Here are the three main causes discovered.
The first cause is pollution on land. The pollutants run with rai nwater into rivers and streams, which carry the poisons into th e ocean. 37 So they will be easily infected(感
染) with diseases.
38 Higher ocean temperatures kill the important food sour ce(来源) for the coral—the algae, the tiny greenish-
gold water plants that live on coral. 39 This process has ha ppened more and more frequently in recent years.
The last factor contributing to the disappearance of coral reefs is people. People sometimes crash into reefs with their boats, breaking off large blocks of coral. 40 Moreover, some peo ple even break coral off to collect for souvenirs since it is so c
olorful and pretty.
A. Divers who walk on reefs can also do serious damage.
B. Many might not even last that long!
C. Global warming is another reason.
D. Chemicals from the poisons kill reefs or make them weak.
E. Reefs provide a home for 25% of the fish in the ocean.

When Mary Moore began her high school in 1951,her mother told her,
“Be sure and take a typing course so when this show business thing doesn’t work out,
you’ll have something to rely on. ”Mary responded in typical teenage fashion. From that mom ent on,
“the very last thing I ever thought about doing was taking a typing course,”she recalls.
The show business thing worked out,of course. In her career,
Mary won many awards. Only recently, when she began to write Growing Up Again,
did she regret ignoring her mom. “I don’t know how to use a computer,”she admits.
Unlike her 1995 autobiography,after all,
her second book is less about life as an awardwinning actress and more about living with dia betes(糖尿
病).All the money from the book is used for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JD RF),
an organization she serves as international chairman. “I felt there was a need for a book like t his,”she says. “I didn’t want to lecture,
but I wanted other diabetics to know that things get better when we’re self-
controlled and do our part in managing the disease.”
But she hasn’t always practiced what she teaches. In her book,
she describes that awful day, almost 40 years ago, when she received two pieces of life-changing news. First, she had lost the baby she was carrying and second, tests(化验)showed that she had diabetes. In a childlike act,
she left the hospital and treated herself to a box of doughnuts (甜甜圈).
Years would pass before she realized she had to grow up—again—
and take control of her diabetes, not let it control her. Only then did she kick her three-pack-a-day cigarette habit, overcome her addiction to alcohol,
and begin to follow a balanced diet.
Although her disease has affected her eyesight and forced her to the sidelines of the dance fl oor,she refuses to fall into self-pity. “Everybody on earth can ask,
‘why me?’about something or other,”she insists. “It doesn’t do any good. No one is immun e (免疫的) to heartache pain,
and disappointments. Sometimes we can make things better by helping others. I’ve come to r ealize the importance of that as I’ve grown up this second time. I want to speak out and be a s helpful as I can be.”

Scientists have found what look like caves on Mars(火
星), and say they could be protecting life from the planet’s terrible environment.
The first caves discovered beyond the Earth appear as seven mysterious black dots on the pi ctures sent back by NASA’s Mars Odyssey orbiter. Each as large as a football field, they may be openings into natural caves below the Martian surface.
“If there is life on Mars, there is a good chance you’d find it in caves,” said Jut Wynne, one of the researchers who noticed the features while working on a US Geological Survey Mars Ca ve Detection Program.
Jonathan Clarke, a geologist with the Mars Society of Australia, yesterday described the disc overy as exciting.
One photo taken at night by an infrared imager(红外线成像
器) showed one hole to be unusually warm, suggesting hot air trapped during the day is flowi ng out.
“I said: ‘Wow,that’s a cave. ” Dr. Clarke said excitedly. “People have been looking for these f or a long time; now we have found them.”
He agreed such caves would be perfect places to hunt for life escaping from the bitterly cold, radiation-soaked(充满辐射的),dry surface.
“Tiny drops of water could collect inside,” he said. “If there are gases coming out, they could provide energy for a whole range of bacteria. A cave is also a protection from radiation; the s。
