BEIJING—Pharmacologist Tu Youyou has become the first scientist on the mainland to win America's respected Lasker Award for her discovery of a new approach to malaria (疟疾) treatment.
The 81-year-old was presented with the medical prize by the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation on September 23, 2011 in New York.
Tu, a scientist at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing, was praised by the jury (评判委员会) for her “drug therapy (治疗) for malaria that has saved millions of lives across the globe, especially in the developing world,” according to a statement on the foundation's website.
In early 1969, Tu was appointed head of a government project that aimed to eradicate(消灭) malaria, and it was then that she began applying modern techniques with Chinese traditional medicine to find drug therapy for malaria.
After detecting (检测) 380 extracts (提取物) made from 2,000 candidate recipes, Tu and her colleagues obtained a pure substance called “Qinghaosu”,which became known as artemisinin in 1972.
An artemisinin-based drug combination is now the standard regimen (养生法) for malaria, and the World Health Organization lists artemisinin and related agents in its catalog of “Essential Medicines”,said a statement from the foundation.
The Lasker Awards are given annually to people who have made major advances in the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of human diseases since 1945.
Lasker Awards are known as “America's Nobels” for their knack (熟练技术) of gaining future recognition by the Nobel committee. In the last two decades, 28 Lasker laureates (得奖者) have gone on to receive the Nobel Prize, and 80 since 1945.

Ask savvy investors(投资者) how they learned their first lessons about money, and they'll probably tell you lessons their parents taught them.
The money values we learn as children stay with us the rest of our lives. If you are a parent, teaching your children the value of saving and investing will benefit them the rest of their lives. Here's what you can do:
Help your child begin to save. Open savings accounts for your children, and teach them how the bank adds interest to their savings that makes their money grow. Encourage your children to save a little from every bit of money they receive, such as allowances, birthday gifts, etc. You may even want to set up a matching program, contributing fifty cents for each dollar your child saves.
Teach your child about stocks(股票). A child in elementary school can start learning about how businesses work. Once your child understands the basics, ask him or her to think about some of the businesses that might be good stock investments. Then use Morningstar Mutual Fund
Guide(available at your library)to find a quality mutual fund that holds some of these companies, or a mutual fund that caters to children such as the Stein Roe Young Investor Fund. Many funds accept regular monthly investments as low as $50 a month, so these funds can be a good way to teach children about the stock market while saving for their college education.
Encourage early IRA(个人退休金账户)saving. The new Roth IRA is a great way for children who are working in summers or after school to begin saving for their future. Imagine how much money you'd have today if you had saved $3,000 a year since you were a teenager!
Let your kids handle their own money. We all learn by doing, so letting your kids manage a segment of their budget(预算)will let them earn valuable financial lessons. They may make mistakes, but they will be small mistakes that may help them avoid larger mistakes as adults.

Today, people all over the world are moving out of small villages in the country to go and live in big, noisy cities. They are moving from the peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams of the countryside to the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds. This movement from rural(乡下的) areas to urban areas has been going on for over two hundred years.
In many countries, the main reason people come to live in towns and cities is work. After one or two large factories have been built in or near a town, people come to find work, and soon an industrial area begins to grow. There is usually a_residential_area nearby, too. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and shops, so many people come to live in the area to provide these services and a city grows.
In every major city in the world, there is a business district where the big companies have their main offices. In the United States, this area is usually in the city center downtown. It is here that you can see many huge skyscrapers(摩天大楼)and office blocks. The people who work here often travel a long way to work each day. Many of them live in the suburbs of the city, far away from the industrial area and the city center. Some suburbs are very pleasant, with nice houses and big gardens. There are usually parks for children to play in and large department stores where you can buy all you need.
But what is the future of the big cities? Will they continue to get bigger and bigger? Perhaps not. Some major cities have actually become smaller in the last ten years, and it is quite possible that one day we will see people moving out of the major cities and back into smaller towns and villages.

Facebook means never having to say goodbye. The social media website has earned a reputation for reconnecting old st week,a guy whom I hadn't seen since my bachelor party five years ago sent me a friend request.I accepted and waited for “Easy E”to send me a greeting of some kind.He had sought me out, after all.

My pool of friends consists of family members, college buddies,co-workers from past and present, and friends of friends. There are 35 in all.If I spent some time uploading old e-mail addresses,I'm confident that I could increase my friend count actually.

Thanks to e-mail,the inability to schedule face-to-face meetings no longer means a friendship must come to a close. But even with e-mail,people will lose touch if one or both parties stop writing back. That's normal.People move from school to school, job to job, city to city. You never have to feel guilty for breaking away.

Even relatively mild stress can lead to long term disability and an inability to work, reveals a large population based study published online in the Journal of Epidemiology (流行病学) and Community Health. It is well known that mental health problems are associated with long term disability, but the impact of milder forms of psychological stress is likely to have been underestimated (低估), say the authors.
62.________
Between 2002 and 2007, the authors tracked the health of more than 17,000 working adults up to the age of 64, who had been randomly selected from the population in the Stockholm area. All participants completed a validated (经验证的) questionnaire at the start of the Study to measure their mental health and stress levels, as well as other aspects of health and well-being.
63.________
During the monitoring period, 649 people started receiving disability benefit —203 for a mental health problem and the remainder for physical ill health.Higher levels of stress at the start of the study were associated with a significantly greater likelihood of subsequently being awarded long term disability benefits. But even those with mild stress were up to 70% more likely to receive disability benefits, after taking account of other factors likely to influence the results, such as lifestyle and alcohol intake. One in four of these benefits awarded for a physical illness, such as high blood pressure, angina(心绞痛), and stroke(中风), and almost two thirds awarded for a mental illness, were likely to have been caused by stress.
64.________
The authors say that it is important to consider their findings in the context of modern working life, which places greater demands on employees, and social factors, such as fewer close personal relationships and supportive networks.
65.________
These factors lead them to ask: “Are the strains and demands of modern society commonly exceeding (超出) human ability?”And they conclude that while mild stress should not be over-medicalised, their findings suggest that it should be taken more seriously than it is.

Words seem to fail me when I try once more to express my thanks to you, and I'll keep my promise and not let you down. Yours_sincerely , Li_Hua。
