Families around the country are finding new options for their children's midday meal thanks to a growing number of delivery options catering to students. Kiddos Catering in Chicago adopts a method of providing restaurant meals to schools that contract with it. Owner Michelle Moses and her staff work with area restaurants to create a variety of kid-friendly choices and deliver the meals to the schools five days a week. Parents select the lunches from an online order form that lists the day's featured restaurant and its menu choices.
"Each day is a different restaurant with six to 10 menu options," she said. "It offers so much
choice to kids." The service appeals to parents because they think their children are less likely to toss out restaurant food than a packed lunch, Ms. Moses said. The schools appreciate that Moses handles the ordering, payment, pickup, and food distribution in the cafeteria. "Schools really want to be in the business of educating kids," she said. "They don't want to be in the food and beverage(餐饮) business."
That doesn't mean that schools always like it when teens (or parents) take it upon themselves to order food through phone apps. Many schools have banned that practice, citing safety concerns about delivery drivers showing up at school unannounced and the burden of tracking down students to alarm them that their meals have arrived.
"These types of deliveries pose an unnecessary security risk for students and staff," said Bernard Watson, director of community relations for Gwinnett County Public Schools in Suwanee, Ga. "In addition, our award-winning school nutrition program provides students with a wide variety of tasty, nutritious meals on-site, so there is no need to order food from outside."
Jacob Levin, a recent graduate of Bexley High School in Bexley, Ohio, relied on a sub shop to deliver a sandwich to him during lunchtime meetings or other appointments that conflicted with his lunch period. "It was a convenient option. In most cases, I would not have been able to eat at school if it weren't for the delivery option," he said. "Having a restaurant-quality sub also was much more enjoyable than cafeteria food."
(1)What can we learn about Kiddos Catering?
A. It should be ordered online.
B. It is a non-profit food program.
C. It delivers the meals to the schools twice a day.
D. It mainly offers the featured dishes of a restaurant.
(2)What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The aim of the food and beverage business.
B. A suitable time for school meals.
C. Advantages of the delivering school lunch.
D. An alternative to the school cafeteria.
(3)What is Bernard Watson's concern for delivering food?
A. It's less healthy than that in the school cafeteria.
B. It causes a potential danger to students.
C. It attracts students' attention to study.
D. Its arrival is usually not punctual.
(4)What is Jacob Levin's attitude to the change of the school lunch?
A. Neutral.
B. Careless.
C. Supportive.
D. Unfavorable.
【答案】(1)A
(2)C
(3)B

Over the next decade, technology will decimate more jobs in many professions.
Some robots already cost less to operate than the salaries of the humans they replace, and they are getting cheaper. Boston Consulting Group predicts that, by 2025, the operating cost of a robot that does welding (焊接) will be less than $2 per hour, for example. That's more affordable than the $25 per hour that a human welder earns today in America.
Uber and many other companies are working on developing cars and trucks that don't need a driver in the driver's seat. According to the American Trucking Associations, approximately 3 million truck drivers were employed in the United States in 2010, and 6. 8 million others were employed in other jobs relating to trucking activity. So roughly one of every 15 workers in the country is employed in the trucking business. We could be talking about millions of jobs disappearing in the early 2020s.
And then there is the "Gig Economy (零工经济)" that has some businesses moving toward part-time, on-demand employment. Uber has already done this to taxi drivers, and other
technology companies are doing it to a wide range of jobs. A study by Intuit predicted that, by 2020, 40% of American workers will be self-employed, and that full-time jobs will be harder to find. We are talking about 60 million people in this category. The problem is that not only do such part-time workers lack reliable full-time jobs and sick pay, but they can't enjoy health insurance and longer-term benefits.
The measures to be taken are to raise trade barriers. But closing the doors to foreign trade won't bring jobs back. It will only slow the global economy and hurt American exports, shrinking the U. S. economy and accelerating job loss.
(1)The underlined word "decimate" in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by "______".
A. make someone interested in
B. equip someone for
C. wipe out
D. bring back (2)What will happen with technologies developing according to the text?
A. Robots will become smarter and smarter.
B. Uber's labor cost will be lower and lower.
C. More and more truck drivers will be needed.
D. Taxi drivers can enjoy more health insurance.
(3)Which of the following is an advantage of a full-time job?
A. It may be flexible.
B. It may offer sick pay.
C. It is full of adventure.
D. It is always well-paid.
(4)Which of the following does the writer agree on?
A. Welcoming foreign trade.
B. Offering more part-time jobs.
C. Using fewer robots to stop job loss.
D. Developing more new technologies.
(5)What's the writer's main purpose in writing the text?
A. To show technology advances in our daily life.
B. To prove technologies cause low incomes.
C. To introduce what the Gig Economy is.
D. To warn the Gig Economy is coming.
【答案】(1)C
(2)B
(3)B
(4)A
(5)D

Some robots already cost less to operate than the salaries of the humans they replace, and they are getting cheaper. "可知机器人的成本比人力更便宜,未来很多公司会更多使用机器人。

也就是说机器人会夺走很多人的工作,故C项正确。

(2)推理判断题。

根据第三段第一句"Uber and many other companies are working on developing cars and trucks that don't need a driver in the driver's seat. "可知Uber公司开发了
无人驾驶技术,会大大地减少雇佣司机的工资付出,公司的运营成本会越来越低。

故B项正确。

(3)推理判断题。

根据第四段最后一句"The problem is that not only do such part-time workers lack reliable full-time jobs and sick pay, but they can't enjoy health insurance and longer-term benefits. "可知兼职工作的人无法享受生病工资,也就是说全职工作的人可以享受sick pay,这也是全职工作的优势,故B项正确。

(4)推理判断题。

根据文章最后一句"But closing the doors to foreign trade won't bring jobs back. It will only slow the global economy and hurt American exports, shrinking the U. S. economy and accelerating job loss. "可知作者认为关闭对外贸易并不能让工作机会回归,只会减缓全球经济发展并伤害美国的出口。

由此可见作者支持对外贸易。

故A项正确。

(5)推理判断题。

根据文章前两段可知技术进步让公司使用更多的机器人,不再需要很多全职工人。

再根据第四段第一句"And then there is the "Gig Economy (零工经济)" that has some businesses moving toward part-time, on-demand employment. "可知零工经济时代很快就会到来。

故D项正确。

The Great Depression that followed the stock market crash of 1929 saw hundreds of thousands of Americans out of work. In the years of great fear and depression, a lot of American citizens looked desperately to the federal government for assistance. Of all the programs designed by President Roosevelt when he took office in 1932, few were more criticized - or had more lasting impact - than the Work Projects Administration, better known as the WPA.
The intention of the WPA, which functioned from 1935 to 1943, was to design and administer public works projects to help relieve unemployment. The majority of these projects involved historic or artistic attempts. The WPA's Writers Project, for example, was responsible not only for such practical works as state guidebooks but also for the collection of historically valuable oral histories. Over 2,900 of these records were collected in 24 states. They provide an irreplaceable firsthand account of people's diets, customs, celebrations, and political and religious beliefs at the time.
The artworks created through the Federal Arts Project are one of the WPA's most lasting achievements. Out - of - work painters, both famous and unknown, created paintings that beautified schools, libraries, and government buildings, WPA photographers traveled across the country recording the hardships of life on small rural farms. When the United States entered World War Ⅱ in 1941, WPA artists were enlisted to produce posters supporting the war effort. A. In1929.
B. In1932.

B. It was President Roosevelt's favorite project.
C. It played an important role during World War Ⅱ.
D. It trained artists before sending them out to work.
(3)How does the author mainly develop this text?
A. By examples.
B. By comparison.
C. Through a true story.
D. Through a persuasive argument.
(4)What's the main idea of the text?
A. President Roosevelt designed the WPA

The intention of the WPA, which functioned from 1935 to 1943,"从1935到1943年这项机构一直在起作用,可知,它是在1935开始实施的。

故选A。

故选A。

Many WPA artworks, including hundreds of small drawings picturing scenes of everyday life, still exist today."

Ronald Reagan ever said, "It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?" To some extent, extra effort seems to be self-defeating. Studies suggest that, after 50 hours a week, employee productivity falls sharply.
But that doesn't stop some managers from demanding that workers stay chained to their desk for long periods. Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, recently praised the "996" model, where employees work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., 6 days a week, as a "huge blessing". Apparently, presenteeism (出勤主义) is the curse of the modern office worker.
There will be days when you do not have much to do: perhaps because you are waiting for someone else in a different department, or a different company, to respond to a request. As the clock ticks past 5 pm, there may be no purpose in staying at your desk. But you can see your boss hard at work and, more importantly, they can see you. So you make an effort to look busy.
Some of this may be a self-continuing cycle. If bosses do not like to go home before their employees, and employees fear leaving before their bosses, everyone is trapped. Staff may feel that they will not get a pay rise, or a promotion, if they are not seen to be putting in maximum effort. This is easily confused with long hours. Managers, who are often no good at judging employees' performance, use time in the office as a measure. The consequence is often wasted effort. We pretend to work and managers pretend to believe us. Rather than work hard, you try to make bosses think that you are. Leaving a jacket on your office chair, walking around purposefully with a notebook and sending out emails at odd hours are three of the best-known tricks. After a while this can result in collective self-delusion that this pretence is actual work.
But presenteeism has more serious consequences. It is perhaps most common in Japan, where people attend the office even when they are in discomfort. In doing so, they are doing neither themselves nor their employers any favours. As well as reducing productivity, this can increase medical expenses for the employer. According to a study in the Journal of Occupation and Environmental Medicine, these costs can be six times higher for employers than the costs of absenteeism among workers. Those workers were more likely to experience greater pain and to suffer from depression.
In the evolution of humanity, presenteeism is a recent phenomenon. In the industrial era, workers were paid not for their output but for their time, and were required to clock in and out. But modern machinery like smartphones and laptops is portable. Turning an office into a prison, with prisoners allowed home for the evenings, does nothing for the creativity that is increasingly demanded of office workers as routine tasks are automated. To be productive you need presence of mind, not being present in the flesh.
