Really? That’s interesting. … We gave our current employees 12 months to quit smoking and drinking. And what happened if they are unable or unwilling to quit? Unfortunately, we had to fire them. Doesn’t them seem a little harsh? I mean, if they are good employees, shouldn’t their past work account for something? Actually, there were 25 employees who smoked and drank, All but 3 of them decided to quit. So you fired 3 employees? Yes. After all, it’s my company. I pay the salaries, so I set the rules…

Activity 2
Thank you for agreeing to speak with me, Mr. Wright. No problem. I’m always happy to meet with the press. I know your time is valuable, so I will keep my questions brief. Certainly. We have done some careful research about employee health and how it affects the company, such as the number of sick days that employees take and the cost of health-care benefits. We concluded from our study that employees who do not smoke or drink alcohol are significantly more healthy than employees who do.
Activity 3
1. What research did Mr. Wright do before he adopted a new health policy? The company did research on employee health and how it affected the company. He looked at how many sick days employees take and how much the health-care benefits cost. He found that employees who do not smoke or drink were healthier than those who do. 2. What does the reporter’s opinion seem to be about the new policy? The reporter seem to have a negative opinion about the policy. He thinks it is harsh. And he implies that employees should not be fired for things like smoking and drinking if their past work is good.
1. How is Mr. Wright’s new health policy good? How is it bad? Mr. Wright’s new health policy is both good and bad. It’s good because it encourages employees to be healthier and to quit smoking and drinking. It will improve their health and save the company money. However, there are also bad things about it. Some people have a really hard time kicking the habit and can’t quit smoking no matter how hard they try. My uncle has tried to quit smoking and had never been able to. So it seems like a harsh policy for someone to lose their job because they can’t quit a bad habit.

You can decide if you would rather work in a good company or smoke and drink. It’s your choice. People who choose to smoke and drink can choose to work someplace else. Many people say that smoking cigarettes is not a choice but an addiction… Is it fair to fire those people when they don’t have any control over whether they smoke or not? I believe smoking is a choice. I myself was addicted to cigarettes ten years ago and I chose to quit. If I can do it, they can too. Then they should find another company to work for.
