试题1
Passage 2 P189
Are you planning a vacation??If you like hot and extremely dry summers, go to phoenix, Arizona. For hot temperatures but lots of rain and thunderstorms, try Miami, Florida. If you want average temperatures and rainfall, St. Louis, Missouri, is the spot. Or if you’re a cold weather fan, head to Fairbanks, Alaska. Its winters are very cold with little precipitation (冰雹). Each of these cities has a certain type of weather. The average weather for a place over many years is called climate, and in no two places in the world is it exactly the same. How can this be?
Many things in nature, such as sunshine, temperature, and precipitation, affect climate. Nearness to mountain, oceans, and large lakes affects it too. Another factor is altitude, or height above sea level. Air cools as altitude increases. So a city at a higher altitude may be colder than one at a lower altitude. Finally, winds affect climate. They move heat and moisture between the oceans and continents. Winds keep the tropics from overheating. They keep the polar regions from getting overly cold.
Climate changes over long periods of time. Some scientists think, for example, that the earth’s climate changed at the time of the dinosaurs (恐龙时代). They think the dinosaurs died because of the change. What causes a climate to change? One possible cause may be changes in the sun. Sunspots, for example, are cool, dark spots that form on the sun. Sunspots may decrease precipitation on the earth and cause unusually dry periods. Changes in the atmosphere may change climate too. Volcanic eruptions (火山的爆发),for instance, release solid particles into
the air. These particles may form a cloud that blocks out the sun’s heat. Human activity is another cause of climate change. Air pollution and reduction of forest cover may have long-term effects on climate.

Passage 4
How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.
Youth is a time when there are few tasks to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is
fed, looked after and loved whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child—things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong.
When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.

PartⅤWriting
1. 一些人认为记住大量的英语单词是学好英语的关键;
There is a heated debate over how to memorize English words. There are mainly two kinds of opinions. It is commonly accepted that college students may learn words in the words list by heart. In contrast, others hold that people may memorize each English word through reading.
2.一些人认为学好英语的最佳方法是进行大量阅读;
Those who hold the fist opinion suggest that college students should learn new words as many as possible. In their
view, this method can save time and energy, and can bring about a striking effect. However, others think that learning new words one after another may lead to confusion and misunderstanding. They argue that the meaning of each word can be well understood only in the context.
3. 一些人认为需要有一个良好的英语学习环境;
3. 我的做法。
As to me, I prefer the latter opinion. First, simply repeating new words too many times makes us feel dull and boring. Second, reading can help us both in memorizing words and understanding the context. In a word, to learn new words through reading is the best method in English study.

Passage 1
In many countries in the process of industrialization, overcrowded cities present a major problem. Poor conditions in these cities, such as lack of housing, inadequate sanitation(卫生) and lack of employment, bring about an increase in poverty, disease and crime.
The over-population of towns is mainly caused by the drift of large number of people from the rural areas. These people have become dissatisfied with the traditional life of farming, and have come to the towns hoping for better work and play.
One possible solution to the problem would be to impose registration on town residents. Only officially registered residents would be allowed to live in the towns and the urban population would thus be limited. In practice, however, registration would be difficult to enforce; it would cause a great deal of resentment, which would ultimately lead to violence.
The only long-term solution is to make life in the rural areas
more attractive, which would encourage people to stay there, This could be achieved by providing encouragement for people to move and work in the villages. Facilities in the rural areas, such as transport, health and education services should be improved. Education should include training in improved methods of farming and other rural industries, so as to develop a more positive attitude towards rural life. The improvement of life in the villages is very important, because the towns themselves cannot be developed without the simultaneous(同步的) or previous development of the rural area.

Passage 2
Today television is one of the most popular forms of entertainment in home. Some people in places where television reception is good may think that television has taken the place of radio. Television, however, is actually a kind of radio. It uses special equipment for sending and receiving the picture. The television sound system uses the same type of equipment that is used in other forms of radio.
Exchanging messages with ships at sea was one of the first uses of radio. Modern radio is still used for this purpose and for communication across oceans. On land, too, radio provides a means of instant communication even with moving vehicles such as taxicabs or service trucks.
Police forces use two-way radio to get information to and from officers in squad cars and on motorcycles. Small portable sets make it possible to communicate with a central exchange while walking or riding in a city or over countryside. Observers in airplanes can report traffic accidents and traffic jams by radio to police officers on the ground.
Radiotelephones are used in many places. Connection with the regular telephone service can be provided for boats, trains,
and cars. Isolated places in deserts, forests and mountainous regions are linked by radiotelephone in many parts of the world. Thus by means of radio people can communicate with others wherever service is provided.

Passage 3
Teachers often complain that students don’t do their homework properly and that they are constantly arriving at school red-eyed and yawning(打哈欠) due to lack of sleep.
It appears that there are two main explanations for this phenomenon. Firstly, many young children stay up late to watch television. Programs suitable for them may finish as late as eight o’clock. No child wants to be an exception in an age of conformity(一致) and admit not having seen what everybody else has. Secondly, a growing number of older children, particularly those approaching school-leaving age, are taking up part-time jobs mainly involving evening or weekend work. They feel that working experience, not academic qualifications, will help them find jobs on leaving school. One can sympathize with both groups of children but it doesn’t make
a teacher’s life any ea sier.

A. School hours and work hours often clash.
B. Students usually feel very tired after their part-time jobs.
C. Part-time jobs take up little of study time.

14. The author thinks the two groups of school children___A___.
A. are understandable
