As the legends (传奇) would have it, the Olympic Games, one of the w orld’s largest and greatest international multisporting events, were founded by Heracles, the son of Zeus, who was considered one of the most importan t Olympic gods. The games were part of a religious festival, which were hel d in honour of Zeus, and were staged every four years at Olympia, a valley near a city called Elis. According to the legends, Heracles first called the g ames "The Olympics", and established the custom of holding them every f our years.
Written records suggest that the first Olympic Games were held in 776 BC. During the games a runner called Coroebus, won the 192 meters race t o become the first Olympic champion. The games were held in Olympia loc ated in the western part of the Peloponnese, 145 km west of Athens, Greec e, and comprised only a few events where any male youngster from the vari ous cities of Greece could participate to show off their physical qualities. Th e games consisted of contests of music, sports and literature.
The games grew over time and were played every four years for nearly 1,200 years. Gradually in due course of time the games lost their hold as t he Romans gained power and controlled Greece. At around 393 AD, empero r Theodosius brought the end of the games, saying they were full of pagan (异教徒) influences. This event marked the end of the first generation of Ol ympic Games known as the Ancient Olympic Games.
The second, known as the Modern Olympic Games came into existence in the late 19th century. For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. From computers to sm artphones, a web of information is open to them. According to a new report from the Pew Research Center, about three out of four kids aged 12 to 13 connect the Internet using a mobile device (移动设备) from time to time. Many younger kids are online too.
Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor(监测) his we
b use and discuss Internet safety with him. "I ask my parents if something is wrong, "Julian says.
Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information. The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands. A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.
Have you ever had to enter a parent’s email address when signing u p for a website? That safety net is there because of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The law says sites for kids under 13 canno t collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, without a parent’s permission (承诺).
This July, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will update COPPA for the first time since the law was created, in 2021 —when there were no sm artphones. "The nature of the way kids get online has changed, "FTC la wyer Phyllis Marcus said.
When the changes take effect, COPPA will apply to (适用于) mobile de vices and newer forms of advertising. It will expand what falls under "pers onal information"to include videos, photographs and services that give user location (位置).
COPPA doesn’t cover everything that can go wrong online. That’s wh y kids and parents need to know what to look out for and to stop and think before sharing information online.
"There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is t otally safe,"says privacy expert Shai Samet. He runs kidSAFE, which chec ks whether a site meets kidSAFE standards and is safe. "It’s important tha t kids know how useful the Internet is but that it also can be dangerous if you are not careful, "he adds.

Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public scho ols across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Wor se, some schools have never had music classes to begin with. But without th em, students’academic growth and emotional health could suffer. In fact, m usic classes are necessary for all students in schools.
Recent studies by Brown University have shown that students who recei ved music education classes were better in math and reading skills than thos e without music classes. Another study by The College Board found that st udents taking music and art classes got higher points. Students’academic su ccess seems to depend on their taking part in music education.
Music programs in public schools also help to add to a student’s sense of pride and selfconfidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. B esides, they have family problems, selfconfidence problems, relationship tro ubles, and choices about drugs and alcohol. All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by The Texas Commission o n Drug and Alcohol Abuse found that students who took part in school mus ic programs were less likely to turn to drugs. Music programs encourage stu dents to work together to produce an excellent performance.
Music crosses language, class, cultural and political boundaries (界限). Music allows students from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet (二重奏) wit h an American classmate. Although they could not communicate verbally (口头上) , they were able to read the music in order to play the duet. Two stu dents from different cultures worked as a team with selfconfidence and co mmon purpose through music.
The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary m usic classes for all students. The world is losing its music, and putting musi
c into schools is the first step to get it back.
12. Education with music classes could ___________.
A. waste a lot more money from parents
B. help students improve their school work

A. students with great success attended music lessons
B. not all students took part in music lessons
C. music plays an important role in students’success
D. students having music classes are better in all lessons
14. The example in Paragraph 4 mainly suggests that ___________.
A. Japan has a good international relationship with America
B. different cultures have different styles of music
C. music makes crosscountry communication possible
D. Japanese and American students are good at playing the piano
15. What is the best title for the text?
