Review Skimming
❖ Review skimming is done on material that has already been read. The purpose is usually to refresh your memory. The best times to review are right after the material is learned and just before a test. It takes little time to review-skim. A good time to do it is while you are waiting for things to get started at the beginning of a class period. It gets you in the mood for the topic and refreshes your memory of the background material.

Skimming
❖ Quick reading for general ideas.
❖ Do not need to read everything in details. Just look at the important parts of the text, e.g. the title, the beginning, the end, the conclusion, the summary, the first sentence in each paragraph, etc.
❖ Read the last paragraph or the last two paragraphs to see if there is a summary or conclusion.
Language Learning in the U.S.
Most people in the US speak only one language: English. They do not learn to speak a second language. High schools teach foreign languages. But very few students learn to speak well. Why don’t Americans speak other languages?
❖ Preview skimming involves dealing with the material before it is read. You are assuming that you will be reading the material later. The purpose is to find out what the material is about, what kind of facts are presented, how it is organized, and what approach will be most effective if it is to be studied later.
First, most Americans never travel to other countries. The US is a very large country. Americans can travel a long distance and not leave the US. They do not need to learn a second language.

Some Americans think that it is a mistake to speak only English. They believe it is very important to learn a second language. Maybe someday other Americans will agree. Then more people will speak a second language in the US.
Skimming speed should be twice as fast as the normal reading speed.

❖ Skimming and scanning are often used together. Usually, we skim to get a general understanding of the passage, scan to find the parts that we are interested and study them. Thus we can look for the information from large amount of materials with a short time.
When skim longer passages
❖ Read the title and the 1st paragraph or 1st two paragraphs to look for the subject or the author’s viewpoint;
❖ Read the 1st sentence of each following paragraph, looking for ideas related to the author’s point;
It is important to note a basic difference between skimming and normal reading. While skimming leaves out some parts of the reading matter, the reader would usually omit no part at all in normal reading. Meanwhile, skimming also differs from scanning in that it is an effort to get general information rather than specific facts.
Overview Skimming
❖ It is used when you have a lot of material to read and don’t have time to read it all. This method is used more often than the other two. In this form of skimming, you are trying to get as much information as you can in one exposure. You do a bit more reading than in previewing. You are interested in getting the main idea and the significant facts rather than discovering the organization and the style.
