Step 1. Revision.
Sa: What was/were... doing at 6:00 yesterday evening? Sb: I/He/She was/ They were...
Step 2 Grammar focus. 1. Continuous tenses. Read the sentences in Grammar Focus together and make a summary about the continuous tenses.
Try to tell the differences between the present continuous tense and the past continuous tense.
2. When & while.
Read the sentences in Grammar Focus again and find out the conjunctions "when” and “while” and the verbs after them.
Do some exercises and have a summary with T’s help.
Step 3. Practice.
Ask Ss to work with their partners and ask and answer with the help of the pictures.
Guide Ss to observe the sentences and sum up the usages of the past continuous tense.
Ask Ss to circle the conjunctions and underline the verbs after them.
Then guide Ss to analyze their different usages.
Let Ss look at the table and guide them to divide the verbs into two types.
T: Can “take photos” continue for some time?
T: Can “buy a drink” last for a long time?
Ask Ss to make sentences like the example. Walk around the classroom to give help if necessary.
Ask Ss to complete the passage. Walk around the classroom to give help if necessary. Check answers.
Let Ss work in pairs and ask and answer questions according to the passage. Invite some pairs to show their conversations.
T: What were you doing at these times last Sunday?
Ask Ss to fill in the chart and make conversations in pairs.。
