“They’re harming your brain.” “They’re ruining your eyes.” “They’re turning you into a violent person.” The words said publicly against video games are so common, but are these worries founded on actual science? Countless studies have offered different opinions on whether video games are bad for you. We’ve rounded up the most notable reports and studies below, so you can weigh up the evidence for yourself.
In 2013,psychologist(心理学家) Simone Kuhn studied the influences of spending long hours on video games on the brains of young adults and found that several areas became bigger than before. These areas are connected with highercognitive functions(认知功能), memory formation andfinemotor(精细运动) function.
Last year, psychologists said that video game players who favour violent games are more likely to be violent when offline. Dr. Mark Appelbaum of the American Psychological Association said that there was a relation between violent video game use and increases in violent behaviour.
Dr. Daphne Bavelier is an expert in the field of Brain & Cognitive Sciences. Bavelier presented the audience with a colour-word test, where non-gamers are easily puzzled by the test, and those who spend long periods playing on their computers are more likely to pass the test with flying colours.
“Actually, those video game players have many other advantages in terms of attention,” said Bavelier, “and one part of attention which is also improved for the better is our ability to follow the movements of objects.”
“So, in a sense, when we think about the influence of video games on the brain, it’s very similar to the influence of wine on the health. There are some very poor uses of wine. There are some very poor uses of video games. But when drunk in reasonable amounts, and at the right age, wine can be very good for health,” said Bavelier.
4. What can be learned from Simone Kuhn’s study?
A. Video games make you happier.
B. Video games make your brain grow.
C. Video games play a key role in memory.
D. Video games teach you how to learn fast.
5. What was Dr. Mark Appelbaum’s attitude towards video games?
A. He was against them.
B. He was hopeful of them.
C.He was in favour of them.
D. He was uncertain about them.
6. Which of the following may Dr. Daphne Bavelier agree with?
A. Video games fix attention problems.
B. Video games make kids do well in exams.
C. Video games encourage violent behaviour.
D. Video games help increase colour knowledge.
7. Why are the uses of wine mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To remind people to avoid video games.
B. To show the disadvantages of video games.
C. To help people learn more about video games.
D.To ask people to make good use of video games.

Have you ever done something that was really dangerous just because you thought it was safe?Maybe you did a dangerous trick on your bicycle or skateboard because you were wearing a helmet and thought you couldn’t get hurt. The psychology(心理) of this sort of behavior is called the Peltzman Effect, named after Sam Peltzman, professor of economics at the University of Chicago. Peltzman believes that those moments when people think they are the safest are the times when they act most dangerously.
Peltzman said that people drove more dangerously when they wore seat belts(安全带) . Driving a large four-wheel drive vehicle has a similar effect on drivers’ behavior. Because drivers of large vehicles sit up higher and can see better, they feel they can make better judgments when they drive. They are better protected in accidents,so they act more dangerously. This makes driving morehazardousto other drivers.
The Peltzman Effect isn’t just limited to driving. In 1972, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) passed a law requiring child safety caps on most medicine bottles. The safety caps were designed to prevent children from accidentally taking the medicine, especially painkillers such as aspirin. Requiring safety caps sounded like a great idea, but there was an unexpected side effect. Because the safety caps are so hardto take off, some people leave them off altogether.
Worse, some parents leave the bottles where kids can reach them because they feel that it is safe because of the cap. A study on the Peltzman Effect showed that more than 3,500 children have been harmedby aspirin
because of the safety caps.
The Peltzman Effect describes how we’re likely to take more risks and act more dangerously when we feel safest. What’s more, the effects of these behaviors can be quite different from what we expect.
8. What is the Peltzman Effect?
A. People behave less safely when they feel safe.
B. People feel safest when they are under protection.
C. Something that seems dangerous turns out to be safe.
D. People who act dangerously are likely to be together.
9. What does the underlined word“hazardous”in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Interesting.
B. Expensive.
C. Dangerous.
D. Important.
10. Medicine bottles with safety caps ________.
A. are required throughout the world
B. meet the demands of the Peltzman Effect
C. sell well in the world
D. are not completely safe
11. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Unsafe Safety Measures
B. Types of Decision Making
C. People’s Fear of Taking Risks
D. Different Behaviors of People in Danger
D
A student had to get his long hair cut off in a middle school in GuangDong Province. It was talked a lot among teachers and students.
In fact, all schools have their own rules. In most schools, boy students are not allowed to have long hair while girls are not allowed to dye their hair. And most school rules say that students should wear their school uniforms at school. And students must obey these rules so that they can get healthy development at school.
But some students have disagreements. They think that boy students having long hair doesn't mean that they are not good students. They want to show their own personality. They think that they would look cool too if they had long hair and the hairstyles like their favorite stars.
A girl student thought that she would look much more beautiful if she had brown hair. So she had her dark hair dyed brown one day. When she went back to school the next day, the teacher was very angry with her. She said that she worked hard at her lessons and did well in every subject. She just didn't know why the teacher didn't allow her to dye her hair while women teachers can.

12. What aren't boy students allowed to do in most middle schools according to this passage?
A. To have long hair.

13. Why did the girl make her hair brown?
A. Because she wanted to be cool.
B. Because she thought that she would look much more beautiful.
C. Because she wanted to make her teacher angry.
D Because women teachers dyed their hair.
14. What does the writer think of these school rules?
A. The students should be against them.
B. They are bad for students.
C. They can make schools in good order.
D. They can't make students grow healthily.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Hair styles and clothes.
B. Schoolboys and schoolgirls.
C. Students and famous stars.
D. School rules.

Finding an outlet for emotion
Finland is fertile (肥沃的) ground for heavy metal music. For every 100,000 people, there are 70 metal bands, according to Medium. Heavy metal’s characteristic aggression and loudness attack listeners with brute (粗暴的) force.___16___
The cold and sometimes severe climate has contributed to the population’s interest in heavier forms of rock.
“When someone is surrounded by cold and dark for long periods of time, it is only natural that some form of depression will start to set in,” the website A Metal State Of Mind noted. “How do many Finns combat the depression, release the negative energy, and make themselves feel more positive?___17___”
According to Medium, most Finnish people are emotionally restrained (克制的). Whatever emotions — soft or hard — they feel, they keep them inside. “I feel that the emotional introversion (内向性) also has to do with the fact that we often want to keep things private.___18___One has to appear ‘strong’ at all costs,” Ida-Katharina Kiljander, one of the lead singers of the Oulu-based metal band Mournful Lines, told Medium.
___19___
“The reason why heavy metal might reflect the Finnish mentality is probably because we are so private that it is difficult to discuss our feelings, but still we need an outlet to deal with these negative emotions,” explained Kiljander.
___20___Those who tend to keep their emotions inside may find themselves drawn to a medium or genre that allows them to do the opposite — something that Finland has made loud and clear with its growing number of heavy metal fans.
A. However, heavy metal music offers a way to express these emotions.
B. Every year, thousands of “metalheads” gather at Finland’s many metal festivals, especially during summer.
C. But why does this seemingly extreme form of music thrive in the Nordic country of Finland?
D. It has not been socially acceptable to show great emotions, for example anger or sadness.
E. Just as the Chinese proverb goes, “Where you live makes you who you are.”
F. Emotional introversion is a form of learned behavior in Finland and the roots go back quite far in history.
G. There is no one form of music more tailored to the release of the negative more than metal.
