I started running about a year ago. At first, I just ran one or two

three of us do it together. The mother of one of us takes us to the rock-
climbing club every Wednesday evening. I really love it. I don’t think
I’ll ever get bored of climbing.
I go skateboarding most Friday evenings in the park. The park is only ten
minutes’ walk from my home, and I stay there for half an hour or so.
My cousin is there too. He’s a beginner, and I’m teaching him a few
moves. He’s starting to get really good!

Darcy, a bright and lovely girl, was very popular at school. She got on well with everyone because she tried to be kind and friendly to them. She once invited the whole class to her birthday party, and she hardly had time to spend with each one of them. However, she felt very happy because no other girl had so many friends at school.
But she felt upset on National Friendship Day this year. On that day, everyone was advised to make presents for their three best friends. Darcy enjoyed the time of choosing three from among her friends. However, she became the only one who had not received a present.
She couldn’t help crying, not understanding why no one regarded her as their best friend even though she had made so much effort. Seeing her crying, her classmates
tried to cheer her up, but none of them stayed long before leaving, which was exactly what Darcy had done so many times to others.
Then she realized that she was only a good schoolmate rather than a friend. Just paying attention to everyone and not making them angry is not enough to build a true friendship.
When Darcy got home that night, she asked her mother what she should do. “Darcy, my dear,” said her mother. “It is impossible to buy friends with a smile, a few good words or some presents. To win a true friend, you need to give them time and care. You must always be close to them, in good times and bad. Besides, it’s only possible to have a few true friends since you don’t have enough time for everyone.”
Hearing the words, Darcy decided to change her way: always be willing to help friends, put up with all of their dislikes and problems, and care about them with all her heart. Yes! That is what makes true friends!
24. How did Darcy feel on National Friendship Day this year?
A. Happy.
B. Upset.
C. Surprised.
D. Angry.
25. What did her classmates do when they saw her crying?
A. They tried to cheer her up.
B. They made presents for her.
C. They invited her to a birthday party.
D. They stayed with her for a long time.
26. To make true friends, Darcy realized that she should ________ .
A. ask her mother for help
B. get on well with everyone
C. made an effort to be friendly
D. give her friends time and care

What will astronauts eat when a space trip takes years?
“Lots of fresh vegetables,” says Dr. Janet Williams, whose team have spent the last 10 years learning how to grow plants in a space station. And it’s a good thing that she has already started her work, because space gardening can be really hard.
As usual astronaut George White looked into the closed plant room. He had planted ,
Dr. Williams’ quick-growing seedlings (秧苗) in it, but none of the stems were showing. He opened the room to check and found the problem. The stems weren’t growing upward and the roots weren’t growing downward. On Earth, gravity (重力) helps a
plant’s stems and roots to find “up” and “down”. However, in the space station,
there was almost no gravity.
Dr. Williams suggested a solution: give the plants more light, as plants also use sunlight
to find their way. And it worked. When the plants had more light, the stems turned up and the roots went down.
Now Dr. Williams was free to worry about the next problem: Would her baby plants live to flower? Can we grow food on a space journey?
Many plants died on the space station. Dr. Williams thought she knew why: the space plants were hungry for air. Plants live by taking up CO2 from the air. Since a plant uses it up in the air around it, the plant needs the moving air to bring more CO2 close to its surface. On Earth, the air is always moving. Gravity pulls down cold air, and warm air rises. And with these air movements, plants get enough CO2.
Many earlier experiments with plants in space had used closed rooms. Dr. Williams tried a new greenhouse that had a fan to keep the air moving. The plants loved it. They flowered and even produced more seeds. Using Dr. Williams’ method, astronaut George completed the first seed-to-seed experiment in space, and moved one plant closer to a garden in space.
“And this,” says Dr. Williams, “is good news for long-term space travel.”
27. Why have Dr. Williams’ team tried to grow plants in space?
A. To produce fresh air for astronauts.
B. To help astronauts relax themselves.
C. To provide food for long space journeys.
D. To make the space garden more beautiful.
28. From the passage, we can learn that ________.
A. Dr. Williams’ team invented a special fan for their greenhouse
B. the air condition was good enough for plants in the closed room
C. astronaut George found the seedlings grew well after being planted
D. a seed-to-seed experiment was successful with Dr. Williams’ method
29. What is Paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. How space plants get enough CO2.
B. How to stop space plants from dying.
C. Why space plants hardly stayed alive.
D. Why space plants needed the moving air.
答案:27. C 28. D 29. C

One of the greatest sources(根源)of unhappiness, in my experience, is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are.
When we see something we don’t like, we wish it could be different. We cry out for something better. That may be human nature, or perhaps it’s something ingrained 的
(根深蒂固)in our culture. The root of unhappiness isn’t necessarily that we want things to be different. However, it’s that we decided we didn’t like it in the first place. We’ve judged it as bad, rather than saying, “It’s not bad or good, and it just is it.” An example: In my recent post, A Beautiful Method to Find Peace of Mind, quite a few readers thought my attitude toward life was negative because I said you should expect people to mess up, expect things to go differently than you planned, and that
you should accept that. They said it’s too negative to expect things to go wrong. However, it’s only negative if you see it as negative and judge it as bad. Instead, you could accept it as the way the world works as the way things actually are. And try to understand why that is.
This can be applied to whatever you do: how other students act at school, how my friends treat me and how heavy the traffic is. If you accept these things as they are, and try to understand why they’re that way, it won’t cause you the feeling of grief, because you’ll no longer say, “Oh. I wish bad things wouldn’t happen!”
Does it mean you can never change things? Not at all. But change things not because you can’t accept things as they are, but because you enjoy the process of changing, learning and growing.
Can we make this world a better place? You can say that you’ll continue to try to do things to help others, to grow as a person, to make a difference in this world. That’s the correct path you choose to take, because you enjoy that path. Therefore, when you find yourself judging and wishing for differences, try a different way: accept, and understand. It might lead to some interesting results.
30. The writer believes that people feel unhappy because ________.
A. unhappiness is a natural emotion in life
B. everyone has their own opinions on things
C. they dislike something in the very beginning
D. people often have difficulties in judging things
31. The words “grief’ in Paragraph 4 probably mean “________”.
A. worry
B. joy
C. pride
D. fear
32. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Accepting the facts might produce better results.
B. Changing things is a process of learning to accept.
C. The readers found the writer’s attitude very hopeful.
D. Judging good or bad may help us understand things clearly.
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To explain how unhappiness changes our lives.
B. To introduce what we can do to avoid unhappiness.
C. To encourage us to find the sources of unhappiness.
D. To share the experiences of dealing with unhappiness.
答案:30. C 31. A 32. C 33. D
四、任务型阅读
任务型阅读——多任务混合。

Today, many children spend a lot of their free time playing games on the Internet. In the UK, 99% of kids aged 8 to 15 play video games. They spend almost 14 hours gaming a week. This information tells us that the benefits and dangers of video games must be carefully considered.
For many people, video games are fun. They have bright lights, funny cartoons and
exciting stories. Everywhere you look, you can see children playing these games. They play on buses and trains, in restaurants and even at school.
Video games are educational too. They make kids think in a creative way and they have to move their hands and eyes quickly. This can improve the way that a child’s brain works. What’s more, video games make children use their imagination. The player has to do many creative things, like drawing, telling stories and building things. Video games are also good for children to learn about technology because they can learn how computers and other devices work while they play.
However, a recent study suggests that video games can also be bad for children. First, children can download many games for free. This means that parents often don’t know if their children are playing violent(暴力的)or scary(恐怖的)games. Second, many children spend too much time playing games on computers and this can lead to health problems. Third, if children spend too much time playing games instead of doing homework, they can have problems at school and get bad grades. Finally, video games can affect children’s social skills. If children spend too much time playing video games by themselves, they might not learn how to play with their friends. In conclusion, it seems clear that video games have some advantages and some disadvantages. It is up to parents to know what games their children are playing and how much time they spend on them. Parents should also make sure their children get enough exercise and spend time with other children.
34. How long do kids aged 8 to 15 in the UK spend on video games a week?
35. Why are video games good for children to learn about technology?
36. What might happen if children spend too much time playing games instead of doing homework?
37. What’s your opinion about video game playing? Why do you think so?
答案:
34. They spend almost 14 hours gaming a week.
35. Because they can learn how computers and other devices work while they play.
36. They might not learn how to play with their friends.
37. I think we can play video games, but we should pay attention to time and ask parents to supervise us.
