I was afraid of being off by myself, away from my family for the first time. Here I was surrounded by people I did not know and who did not know me. I would have to make friends with them and perhaps also compete with them for grades in courses I would take. Were they smarter than I was? Could I keep up with them? Would they accept me?2 I soon learned that my life was now up to me. I had to set a study program if I wanted to succeed in my courses. I had to regulate the time I spent studying and the time I spent socializing. I had to decide when to go to bed, when and what to eat, when and what to drink, and with whom to be friendly. These questions I had to answer for myself.3 At first, life was a bit difficult. I made mistakes in how I used my time.I spent too much time making friends. I also made some mistakes in how I chose my first friends in college.4 Shortly, however, I had my life under control. I managed to go to class on time, do my first assignments and hand them in, and pass my first exams with fairly good grades. In addition, I made a few friends with whom I felt comfortable and with whom I could share my fears. I set up a routine that was really my own — a routine that met my needs.5 As a result, I began to look upon myself from a different perspective.I began to see myself as a person responsible for myself and responsible formy friends and family. It felt good to make my own decisions and see thosedecisions turn out to be wise ones. I guess that this is all part of whatpeople call “growing up.”6 What did life have in store for me? At that stage in my life, I reallywas not certain where I would ultimately go in life and what I would do withthe years ahead of me. But I knew that I would be able to handle what wasahead because I had successfully jumped this important hurdle in my life: Ihad made the transition from a person dependent on my family for emotionalsupport to a person who was responsible for myself.

The desire to read easily led to the Braille system. January 4 is Braille Day. That day honors the blind. Butwe should also remember Louis and what he achieved by age 15.2 Louis Braille was born on January 4, 1809, in France. He lived with his parents, two older sisters, and one older brother in a small, stone house in Coupvray.3 Three-year-old Louis went to his father’s workshop. Louis’s father was a saddle maker who made items out of leather. Imitating his father, Louis tried to cut a piece of leather with a small knife. His hand slipped, and the point of the knife went into his eye. The doctors took care of him the best they could, but the injured eye got infected. Then the infection spread to his good eye. Louis became blind.4 Louis went to a public school and learned by listening to the teacher. To do his homework, his sister and a friend read the assignments to him. Soon Louis was at the top of his class.5 One day, the pastor of Louis’s church came to Louis’s house and told his parents of a school for the blind in Paris. Louis’s parents decided to send him to the school when he was nine years old.6 Louis wanted very much to read. The school had only 14 books for blind people; the books were big and heavy. The letters were large and raised; one book took a long time to read. Louis thought there must be a better way to read.7 When Louis was 12, Charles Barbier, a French Army officer, came to the school. Barbier developed an alphabet code used by army soldiers. The code was used to deliver messages to the soldiers at night. It was made up of dots and dashes. It kept the messages secret even if the enemy would see them, but the code was too complicated for the blind. Louis thought the code was slow and the dashes took up too much space. Only one or two sentences fit on a page.8 Over the next three years, Louis worked to simplify the code. On a vacation at home, Louis, age 15, picked up a blunt awl. Aha An idea came to him. He made the alphabet using only six dots. Different dots were raised for different letters. Later, he madea system for numbers and music.9 Today, Braille is in nearly every language around the world. Louis Braille, at age 15, changed the lives of blind people when he created the six-dot Braille system. It is fitting that January 4, Louis’s birthday, is considered Braille Day, in honor of the blind. 把布莱叶(de)生日1月4日定为向盲人表示敬意(de)布莱叶日是非常恰当(de).Unit 3 Text A Thanks, Mom, for All You Have Done1 We tend to get caught up in everyday business and concerns and forget some of the things that are most important. Too few of us stop and take the time to say “thank you” to our mothers.2 With a letter to my mother on the occasion of Mother’s Day, I’m going to take a minute to reflect. Feel free to use any of this in greeting your own mother on Sunday, May 10. Happy Mother’s Day to all.Dear Mom,3 This letter, I know, is long past due. I kn ow you’ll forgive the tardiness, you always do.4 There are so many reasons to say thank you, it’s hard to begin. I’ll always remember you were there when you were needed.5 When I was a child, as happens with young boys, there were cuts and bumps and scrapes that always felt better when tended by you.6 You kept me on the straight path, one I think I still walk.7 There was nothing quite so humbling as standing outside my elementary school classroom and seeing you come walking down the hall. You were working at the school and I often managed to get sentoutside class for something. Your chiding was gentle, but right tothe point.8 I also remember that even after I grew bigger than you,you weren’t afraid to remind me who was in charge. For that I thankyou.9 You did all the things that mothers do — the laundry, thecooking and cleaning —all without complaint or objection. But you were never too busy to help with a problem, or just givea hand.10 You let me learn the basics in the kitchen, and duringthe time I was on my own it kept me from going hungry.11 You taught by example and for that I am grateful. Ican see how much easier it is with my own daughter to be the bestmodel I can be. You did that for me.12 Your children are grown now, your grandchildren, almost. You can look back with pride now and know you can rest. Asmothers are judged, you stand with the best.13 God bless you, Mom.

Unit 1 Text A College—A Transition Point in My Life1 When I first entered college as a freshman, I was afraid that I was not able to do well in my studies. I made mistakes in how I used my time. I spent too much time making friends. I set up a routine that was really my own — a routine that met my needs.5 As a result, I began to look upon myself from a different perspective. I began to see myself as a person responsible for myself and responsible for my friends and family. It felt good to make my own decisions and see those decisions turn out to be wise ones. I guess that this is all part of what people call “growing up.”6 What did life have in store for me? At that stage in my life, I really was not certain whereI would ultimately go in life and what I would do with the years ahead of me. But I knew that I would be able to handle what was ahead because I had successfully jumped this important hurdle in my life: I had made the transition from a person dependent on my family for emotional support to a person who was responsible for myself.

Unit 1 science vs. the humanities1.Are the humanities useless frill—a vestigial appendage of our antiquated educational system? Has the importance of technology been stressed over that of the humanities at a time when perhaps the converse should be true? Should we bother at all to teach the humanities in our schools? These are questions which have often beset educators and serious-minded thinkers. Let us investigate these questions in their broad context, for our heritage depends to an extent on the answers.
2.The humanities are not a mere device; they are not agencies for general improvement. The humanities in the broad cultural sense, and in the narrow academic one, have uses that are much more intimate and permanent. In any generation, persons are born who find books, music, works of art, and theaters in the world and are instinctively drawn to them. These people grow up with an ingrained desire for the objects of their interest and a preference for people of like taste. a larger group, though less intent, takes similar pleasure in artistic activities from time to time. The two groups together are strong enough to impose on the remainder the daily presence of what delights them.

As the film says, the college life is about ourselves. During a few years of study, we are going to make a great improvement. It is colorful because all types of extracurricular activities such as sports meets, speech contests, and different social gatherings and dancing parties provide opportunities to make new friends.

➢ being independent ➢ a new lifestyle ➢ a new environment ➢ meeting different people ➢ learning more knowledge
Most probably, our new friends come from different cultures, speak different dialects or languages and have different views of the world. The college or university is just a new stage of life for us to play our own roles colorfully. However, college life is also very challenging. It is actually everyone’s story about how to develop skills in communicating, learning and researching, about how to make achievements in preparing for a bright future and again about ourselves.

unit1 college just isn27t special any moreUNIT1College just isn't special any more1 "If you can remember anything about the 1960s, you weren't really there," so the saying goes. It may be true for those who spent their college years in a haze(阴霾、薄雾、疑惑)of marijuana(大麻) smoke. But there is one thing everyone remembers about the 1960s: Going to college was the most exciting and stimulating (刺激的)experience of your life.2 In the 1960s, California's colleges and universities had transformed the state into the world's seventh largest economy. However, Berkeley, the University of California's main campus, was also well-known for its student demonstrations(示范、展示) and strikes(罢工), and its atmosphere of political radicalism(激进主义). When Ronald Reagan ran for office as governor of California in 1966, he asked if Californians would allow "a great university to be brought to its knees by a noisy, dissident minority"(持不同政见的少数人). The liberals(自由主义者) replied that it was the ability to tolerate noisy, dissident minorities which made universities great.3 On university campuses in Europe, mass socialist or communist movements gave rise to increasingly violent clashes(冲突) between the establishment(确立、制定) and the college students, with their new and passionate(热情的)commitment(保证、承诺、献身) to freedom and justice. Much of the protest(抗议、断言)was about the Vietnam War. But in France, the students of the Sorbonne in Paris managed to form an alliance(联盟、联合) with the trade unions and to launch a general strike, which ultimately(最后、根本上) brought about the resignation(辞职) of President de Gaulle.4 It wasn't just the activism(行动主义) that characterized student life in the 1960s. Everywhere, going to college meant your first taste of real freedom, of late nights in the dorm or in the Junior Common Room(学生公共休息室), discussing the meaning of life. You used to have to go to college to read your first forbidden book, see your first indie(独立的) film, or find someone who shared your passion for Jimi Hendrix or Lenny Bruce. It was a moment of unimaginable freedom, the most liberating(解放) in your life.5 But where's the passion today? What's the matter with college? These days political, social and creative awakening(唤醒、觉醒) seems to happen notbecause of college, but in spite of it. Of course, it's true that higher education is still important. For example, in the UK, Prime Minister Blair was close to achieving his aim of getting 50 per cent of all under thirties into college by 2010 (even though a cynic(愤世嫉俗者)would say that this was to keep them off the unemployment statistics). Yet college education is no longer a topic of great national importance. Today, college is seen as a kind of small town from which people are keen(渴望的)to escape. Some people drop out, but the most apathetic(冷漠的、无动于衷的)stay the course because it's too much effort to leave.6 Instead of the heady(任性的、顽固的) atmosphere of freedom which students in the 1960s discovered, students today are much more serious. The British Council(英国文化委员会)has recently done research into the factors(因素)which help international students decide where to study. In descending(递减次序)order these are: quality of courses, employability prospects(前景、预期), affordability(支付能力), personal security issues, lifestyle, and accessibility(可达性). College has become a means to an end, an opportunity to increase one's chances on the employment market, and not an end in itself, which gives you the chance to imagine, just for a short while, that you can change the world.7 The gap between childhood and college has shrunk(收缩,shrink的过去式), and so has the gap between college and the real world. One of the reasons may be financial. In an uncertain world, many children rely on their parents' support much longer than they used to. Students leaving university in the 21st century simply cannot afford to set up their own home because it's too expensive. Another possible reason is the communications revolution. Gone are the days when a son or daughter rang home once or twice a term. Today students are umbilically(母系地) linked to their parents by their cell phones. And as for finding like-minded friends to share a passion for obscure(晦涩的) literature or music, well, we have the Internet and chat rooms to help us do that.8 "Bliss(极乐、天赐之福) was it in that dawn(黎明、破晓) to be alive,9 But to be young was very heaven(天堂)!"10 Wordsworth(华兹华斯,英国诗人) may have written these lines about theFrench Revolution, but they were also true for the students of the 1960s. Sowhy aren't they true for the students of today?。
