If you can’t manage to quit smoking to improve your own healt h, do it for your kids’ hearing. Teenagers who have been expo sed to secondhand smoke have about double the risk of heari ng loss of those who had little or no exposure, say researcher s from the New York University School of Medicine.
They tested more than 1,500 adolescents (青少
年) aged 12 to 19 for blood levels of cotinine, a byproduct of n icotine that forms when people are exposed to cigarette smok e, and then tested their ability to hear high- , medium-, and lo w-frequency sounds.
The more smoke the teens had been exposed to, the greater t heir risk of hearing loss. Those with the highest levels of expo sure had nearly three times the risk of hearing loss.
Hearing loss was especially marked in the mid- to high-frequency range, which means the adolescents may have diffi culty understanding human speech. That could cause proble ms in school, where kids may be labeled trouble makers. Surprisingly, some 80 percent of these kids had no idea that t hey had hearing loss.
More than half of American children and teenagers are expos ed to secondhand smoke in their homes. This exposure incre ases children’s risk of lung cancer, learning disabilities, heart disease, and other diseases.
Scientists suggest that parents minimize their children’s expo sure to tobacco smoke and that all children and teenagers ex posed to secondhand smoke should be regularly tested for he aring loss, in case hearing aids are needed.

I still read out loud to my son. He is in fifth grade and an avid reader. He plows through books and is currently devouring (津津有味地看)
The Hobbit which he calls “addicting”. But he still likes it when I read out loud to him before bed.
I’ve always read to him, I could probably recite Goodnight Mo on by heart and I like to think it has helped to instill his love of reading in him.
But as he’s gotten older, reading to him has changed. The bo oks are longer, of course, and sometimes he corrects me if I misread a word in the dim light of his room. But what’s really c hanged is what we both get out of it.
When I was in fifth grade, I had a wonderful teacher, Mr. Ha nks, who would read aloud to the class after lunch. I remembe r him reading Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and me hanging on every word. I could hardly wait for lunch t o be over to find out what happened next to little Charlie Buck et.
Now I’m giving the same gift to my own son. Last week he br ought me a copy of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol he fo und on the shelf and asked me to read it to him. One of the bo
nuses of reading to an older child is you can revisit a beloved book from your past or be exposed to a book you have never read yourself.
Such was the case with A Christmas Carol which I admit I ha d never read. So when I started reading I worried that it would be a tough go since the book uses expressions and the langu age Dickens used in the 1840’s. I found myself having to defin e things such as braziers and balustrades. But in the wonderf ul descriptiveness of Dickens’ prose, my son was especially t aken with his description of Scrooge’ s house where he had of ten played hide-and-seekwith other friends.

Christmas is approaching, but 20 children in Sandy Hook Ele mentary School in the US will never get to open their Christm as presents.
On Dec. 14, Adam Lanza, 20, killed his mother and then brok e into a school in Newtown, Connecticut. He killed 20 student s and six adults there before taking his own life.
The tragedy has stunned the people of Newtown, a quiet town of 27,000 residents northeast of New York.
The shooting has also shaken the country and the world. It ha s made the US think, once again, about gun control issues.
The US constitution(宪
法) protects the right of its people to carry guns. Any US citize n over 21 without a criminal background or mental health prob lems can buy the weapons, which are sold in gun shops and even supermarkets in some states.
“As a result, Americans now carry around 270 million guns, m aking them the most heavily armed people in the world per ca pita (人均), “ CNN reported.
This has brought with it a lot of tragedies. UN data shows that the US has the highest per capita rate of gun-
related killings among all developed countries; Americans are 20 times more likely to be killed by a gun than people from oth er developed countries.
Since 1982, there has been more than 61 shootings in the US , according to Mother Jones magazine. The worst incident ha ppened at Virginia Tech in 2007, when 32 people were killed. Although the US has gun control laws, some want them to be more restrictive, especially after the recent tragedy. But suppo rters of gun ownership, including the National Rifle Associatio n, argue that the right to own guns has become part of Americ an culture. Gun use can date back to the early days of coloniz ation(殖民地时期), when European settlers used guns for self-defense and hunting.
Despite all this, US President Barack Obama has voiced his c oncerns and says that he wishes to make a change,
“We can’t tolerate this any more. These tragedies must be en ded. And to end them, we must change,” said Obama after th
e recent shooting.
32. How many people died in Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting?
A. 26
B. 28
C. 27
D. 32
33. The underlined word “stunned” in the third paragraph is cl osest in meaning to “”.
A. interested
B. annoyed
C. shocked
D. amazed
34. What can we learn from the text?
A. In the US, citizens over 21 are all allowed to buy the wea pons.
B. Americans face much bigger gun threat than people from other developed countries..
C. Sandy Hook Elementary School is the worst shooting inci dent in the US history.
D. Americans are the most heavily armed people in the worl d
35. What’s Obama’s attitude toward gun control in the US acc ording to the text?
A. It is unnecessary to make a change.
B. No students should be allowed to carry a gun any more.
C. It goes against the traditional culture.
D. It should be more restrictive.

If you can’t manage to quit smoking to improve your own health, do it for your kids’ hearing. T eenagers who have been exposed to secondhand smoke have about double the risk of heari ng loss of those who had little or no exposure, say researchers from the New York University School of Medicine.
They tested more than 1,500 adolescents (青少
年) aged 12 to 19 for blood levels of cotinine, a byproduct of nicotine that forms when people are exposed to cigarette smoke, and then tested their ability to hear high- , medium-, and low -frequency sounds.
The more smoke the teens had been exposed to, the greater their risk of hearing loss. Those with the highest levels of exposure had nearly three times the risk of hearing loss.
Hearing loss was especially marked in the mid- to high-
frequency range, which means the adolescents may have difficulty understanding human sp eech. That could cause problems in school, where kids may be labeled trouble makers. Surprisingly, some 80 percent of these kids had no idea that they had hearing loss.
More than half of American children and teenagers are exposed to secondhand smoke in the ir homes. This exposure increases children’s risk of lung cancer, learning disabilities, heart di sease, and other diseases.
Scientists suggest that parents minimize their children’s exposure to tobacco smoke and that all children and teenagers exposed to secondhand smoke should be regularly tested for hea ring loss, in case hearing aids are needed.
