Around the world many people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course, there have always been people who
have looked for adventure —those who have climbed the highest mountains, traveled in unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now, however, there are more and more people who hunt for an immediate excitement from a dangerous activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.
Bungee jumping is a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place 200 metres above the ground with an elastic (弹'性的)rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometres an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Other activities which most people would say are as risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high mountains.
Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some scientists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and uninteresting. Not very long ago, people's lives were constantly in danger. They had to go out and hunt for food. If they were badly ill, it was not easy for them to get well again. In fact, life was a continuous battle for living and existing.
Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in safe conditions; they buy food in shops; and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping. 51. The best title for the text is A. Dangerous sports: What and why? C. Bungee jumping: Is it really dangerous? 52. More and more people today A. are climbing the highest mountains C. are coming close to death in sports 53. In the 19th century Americans from the eastern states moved out west to settle in the rich new lands along the Pacific Coast. The most difficult part of their trip was crossing the "Great American Desert,, in the western part of the United States by horse and wagon.
The western desert can be very dangerous. There is little water and there are few trees. But the desert also has scenery of great beauty. Tall towers of red and yellow stone rise sharply from the flat sandy valley floor. The scene has been photographed many times and appears in movies and on TV.
In Arizona, man-made dams across the Colorado River have made two large lakes in the middle of the dry desert country.
At Lake Powell, the red stone arch of Rainbow bridge rises high above the blue lake.
There are few roads. Many areas of Lake PowelFs shore can only be reached by boat or on foot. But hikers in this empty desert land sometimes find very old native American pictures painted on the rocks.
In Death Valley, California, the summer temperature rises to 130 -165 degrees Fahrenheit. There is less than two inches of rain each year. Death Valley is the lowest place in America 一925 metres below sea level. In the 1800s, many travelers died when they tried to cross this waterless valley in the terrible heat.
Although the desert is dry and seems empty, there is plenty of life if you look closely. Small insects, snakes, and rats have learned how to live in the desert heat. They live underground and come out at night when it is cool. Plants such as cacti need very little water. When it does rain in the desert (sometimes only once or twice a year), plants grow quickly, and flowers open in a single day. For a short time, the desert is covered with splendid color.

Making good grades probably tops your list of goals for your middle school child, but making friends is also important. Middle school marks a new chapter in your child's life. She's moving away from childhood and into the beginning of adolescence.
As children approach adolescence, they increasingly look to friends for clues on how to behave, and hope to be noticed and accepted by their fellow students.
You cannot choose your child's friends for him, but you can help him learn to choose friends wisely. You can give him tools to find friends who will have a positive impact on him. Here are a few ways to help your child make friends:
1.. When he succeeds or has made a great choice, tell him you're proud of him. When he does not succeed, help him feel better and keep trying. Your middle school student is going through many changes and may feel like she isn't "good enough". Building her self-esteem will help her feel more confident and will make it easier for her to form healthy friendships.
2.Talk with your child every day and listen to his concerns. Give him your full attention when he talks, and really listen to what he has to say.
3.Discuss with your child the qualities in a friend that matter most, such as being trustworthy and kind, and making good choices when it comes to steering clear of alcohol and tobacco.
4.Get to know your child's friends. Try not to judge your child's friends based on how they dress. It's more important to talk with them and find out what they like to do. Allow your child to invite his friends over and get to know them better.
5.Introduce your child to new groups of people. After-school clubs, and sports programs are good places for meeting new people. Be open to exploring different activities with your child to find something that he enjoys.

China is now more and more involved in international events, so it is necessary for us to improve the qualities of the citizens as manners play an important role in international communication.
Sometimes some people don't behave properly in our daily lives. For example, spitting in public places can be seen somewhere. The flowers in public gardens are picked. What is worse, rubbish and plastic bags are thrown on the ground in the street.
In my opinion, these bad behaviors will make bad impressions upon visitors to China, which will ruin the good reputation of China as a large country with a long history. So all people should be taught to be well-behaved and every one of us should form good habits from now on.。
