13、We do eye exercises. We wear sunglasses. We do a lot of things to protect our eyes. But we usually forget another important part of our body – the ears.
Ears help us hear the world. But many things, such as loud noise can hurt your ears. Once this h appens, it’s hard to get your hearing back.
March 3 is Ear Care Day. It reminds us to take good care of our ears. So how can we do this? Let’s take a look together.
Keep your ears dry and warm
Dry our ears with a towel after swimming or taking a bath. If you feel water in your ear, shake your head a little a bit. This can help you get the water out of your ear.
Also, when the sun is shining, use some sunscreen on your ears. During the winter, protect your ears with a hat or a scarf.
How to clean your ears
Usually, our ears can clean themselves. The earwax builds up, dries out, and then comes out of the ear along with some dirt.
So don’t clean your ears with anything sharp. Sharp objects can make the earwax go too deep into your ears and hurt them. But if the earwax is making you feel bad, you can ask a doctor for help.
How to use headphones
Don’t listen to loud music on your headphones for a long time. Follow the 60:60 rule: listen to music at 60 percent of your headphones’ maximum volume(最大音量)for no more than 60 minutes a day.
Over-the-ear headphones are better than in-ear ones. They do a better job of stopping outside noise, so you can listen at a lower volume.

14、What would life be like if you give up using your cell phone? Will it become boring?
Twenty-eight eighth-graders at St. Matthew School in San Francisco will tell you it can still be rich and colorful.
These students took part in their school’s “tech-free” challenge. They couldn’t use cell phones for two weeks from Nov 11 to Nov 22.
The idea was to help students understand how technology has affected their lives, said Denise Uhl, principal of the school.
Uhl did a survey on technology usage among the eighth-graders before thinking of the challenge. She found that 84 percent of the students said they didn’t like it “when everyone was on their cell phones”, but they didn’t know what to do about it. The answer was actually easy --- to stop constantly using cell phones.
To help students understand the point, Uhl created the activity. It was warmly welcomed among students.
“I wanted to sign up for the tec h-free challenge because it was just really a good idea to do it,” eighth-grader Joe told local newspaper Catholic San Francisco. “I wanted to get closer to my family. And it really worked. I started to hang out with my family more. We watched more family movies and we played a lot of board games.”
The activity also helped students develop their interests.
During the two weeks, Lucas said he spent much more time outside, picking lemons in his garden. Maddie finished a painting and Cassie created a scarf on a loom (织布机).

Pollution inside homes and other buildings kills more than 4 million people each year. Many people die as a result of breathing smoke or from cooking over wood-powered or coal-powered stoves.
One way to reduce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment powered by the sun. Crosby Menzies, a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called the "Sol-4". "It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooker. "
The "Sol-4" works by reflecting (反射) light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct (把……对准) the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy. Within two minutes, the pan is hot enough to cook sausages and onions. In just four minutes, water can be boiled. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity.
The cooker is also much "friendlier" than other models because people do not have to stand in the sun to use it. And people can prepare meals without having to collect firewood or spend money on coal. Such individuals (人)would be less likely to have breathing illnesses from harmful smoke.
At present, the cooker only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on a way to make it work without sunlight.
Each cooker costs about $2,000, which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem. Crosby Menzies has created a non-governmental organization called Solar Cookers for Africa. It plans to raise money through donations to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment.

19、Nowadays, smartphones are popular among students. Should they be allowed to use smartphones at school or not? Our students have different opinions.
Some students think they can use smartphones at sch ool. First, it’s convenient for them to call their parents, teachers or friends when they have problems. Second, they can search what they need on smartphones. For example, they can look up new words and look through news.
However, some students disagree. They think using smartphones at school is a waste of time. Many students spend too much time on games and QQ. It does harm to students’ study. And it’s unhealthy for the mind and the body.
In my opinion, students can’t use smartphones at school. Students should spend more time doing sports or having fun with friends. They should also pay more attention to their study. If they do, they’ll be happier and healthier.。
