There once was a master who went to India. In those times, we didn't have the communications or airplanes or many kinds of transportation that we do now。
So the master went to India on foot。
He had never been to India before; perhaps he came from Persia. And when he got there, he saw a lot of fruit。
In India they have plenty of fruit to sell, but much of it is expensive because they can’t grow much due to the water situation。
So he saw one basket, a big basket of some very red, long fruit。
And it was the cheapest in the shop, not expensive at all。
学必求其心得,业必贵于专精
So he went up and asked, ”How much per kilo?" And the shopkeeper said, "Two rupees(卢比)." Two rupees in India is nothing;it's like dirt. So he bought a whole kilogram of the fruit and started eating it. But after he ate some of it: Oh, my God!His eyes watered, his mouth watered and burned, his eyes were burning, his head was burning and his face became red. As he coughed and choked and gasped for breath, he jumped up and down, saying,"Ah!Ah! Ah!"
But he still continued to eat the fruit! Some people who were looking at him shook their heads and said,"You’re crazy, man。
Those are chilies(辣椒)!You can’t eat so many; they’re not good for you!People use them as a condiment(作料), but only a little bit to put into food for taste。
You can’t just eat them by the handful like that; they’re not fruit!" So the stupid master said,”No, I can’t stop!I paid money for them, and now I'll eat them。
It's my money!”
And you think that master was stupid, right?Similarly, we sometimes do a lot of things like that. We invest money, time or effort in a relationship, business or job。
And even though it's been a long time, bitter experience tells us it won't work, and we know there's no more hope that things will change in the future - this we definitely know by intuition(直觉)— we still continue just because we've invested money, time, effort and love into it. Just like the man who ate the chilies and suffered so much but couldn't stop because he didn't want to waste the money he'd paid.

58. What is the purpose of the passage?

D。
To tell us when to give up in life。

Encouraging Children to Think
Creativity is the key to a brighter future, say education and business
学必求其心得,业必贵于专精
experts. Here is how schools and parents can encourage this important skill in children.
If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925,we might not have a product that we now think of as of great importance: a new type of tape。
Drew worked for the Minnesota Mining Company. At work he developed a kind of material strong enough to hold things together。
But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Finally, using his own time, Drew improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people。
And his former company learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 15 percent of their work time just thinking and developing new ideas。
Creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a character of high intelligence. Just because a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce new ideas that are good for something. Unfortunately, schools have not tried to encourage creativity。
With strong attention to test results and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers。
The result is that children can give back information but can’t recognize ways to use it in new situations。
They may know the rules correctly, but they are unable to use them to work out practical problems. It is important to give children choices. Form the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results。
Even if it’s choosing between two food items for lunch, decision—making helps thinking skills。
As children grow older, parents should let their children decide how to use their time or spend their money, but not help them too much if they make the wrong decision。
The child may have a hard time, but that is all right。
This is because the most important character of creative people is a very strong wish to find a way out of trouble。

For five days, Edmon ton’s Downtown Park is changed into one huge stage where artists are able to share their talents, and where people are able to celebrate and enjoy themselves. Since its beginning in 1980,the Edmonton Folk Music Festival has been commemorating(纪念)the true feeling of what folk music is all about and that’s the traditional togetherness(友爱)that is felt when people gather to share stories and feelings through songs.
This year will be the sixth year when volunteer Riedel will be offering up her time to the festival。
”People coming off a busy spring and summer have a moment of relaxation,” Riedel said. "It's really easy to relax, and it's great seeing family and friends have fun together。
" These families and friends come from all different kinds of musical tastes. People who take pleasure in Blues are there,so are people who love Bluegrass。
This festival does its best to develop everyone's musical interests.
With so many years of experience, the festival has become a well-oiled machine, and does whatever it can to make attendees feel as comfortable as possible. There are free water stations throughout the venue(举办地)for people to fill up their travel cups。
When people buy food, reusable dishes are given a $2 plate fee,but that is returned when the plate is brought back.
The festival has completely sold out of tickets, and in record time。
But with big names such as Van Morrison and Jakob Dylan, it's easy to see how that was going to happen. There is no parking area during the festival, so using the Park & Ride system or Edmonton Transit is strongly advised.
A bike lock-up area is provided and will be available from Thursday to Sunday one hour before the gates open until 45 minutes after the gates close.
The Edmonton Folk Music Festival begins on Wednesday, Aug.4 with Van Morrison playing the special donation fund(基金)concert, and will finish up on Sunday,Aug。

British researchers found that men are almost as likely as women to want children, and they feel more lonely, depressed, angry and sad than women if they don’t have them.
Childless women were more likely to mention personal wish and biological urge(冲动)as major influences, compared to men. Men were more likely to mention cultural, societal and family pressures than women.
Robin Hadley, of Keele University, found that 59 percent of men and 63 percent of women said they wanted children。
Of the men who wanted children, half had experienced loneliness because they did not have any children, compared with 27 percent of women。
Thirty—eight percent of men had experienced depression because they did not have any children, compared with only 27 percent of women.
One in four men had experienced anger because they did not have any children, compared with 18 percent of women, while 56 percent of men had experienced sadness because they did not have any children, compared with 43 percent of women。
However, no men had experienced guilt (内疚)because they did not have any children although 16 percent of women had。
Mr Hadley said,“My work shows that there was a similar level of wish for parenthood among childless men and women in the survey, and that men had higher levels of anger, depression, sadness, jealousy(嫉妒) and loneliness than women。
This challenges the common idea that women are much more likely to want to have children than men,and that they always experience all kinds of bad emotions more deeply than men if they don't have children.”
He carried out his survey of 27 men and 81 women who were not parents using an online questionnaire among people aged 20 to 66,with an average age of 41。

Nowadays, many students get together to discuss about what kind of teachers they like or dislike best. For most students, they like the teachers who are quite learned, cool, talkative and humorous. They love their students and are fond of communicating with them and know what
their favorites are. If they had some major hobbies in common, students would most admire their teachers.
My teacher Mr。
X is such an amazing person。
He is always enthusiastic and eager to give a hand to any student who is in need of help in study or life。
His great experience and his abundant knowledge can be inspiring for any person。
We admire him so much, not only for his being helpful in our daily life, but also for his being great as a man.
All in all, no matter what kind of people our teachers are,we should respect them and mustn’t say anything impolite about our teachers, since they are doing so much for us.。
