Old age in the United States presents many problems and opportunities 〔chances). As a result of improved medical services, people live longer than they used to. This increase in longevity〔length of life〕creates a wide range(范围〕of social needs that didn't exist when the average life expectancy〔估计寿命〕 was lower. The specialty of gerontology 〔老年医学〕has opened research areas and careers(职业〕related only to the elderly.
Because of the fact that a family has become smaller than before, the elderly have to create a way of life separated from basical1y small family units. This
situation is complicated 〔变得复杂〕by the fact that many of their friends may have died and their children have moved away.
The elderly person must set up a new life. Often, the elderly must live on a fixed income Social Security (社会保障制度)and pensions (养老金)and gradually becoming smaller savings. While some live with their children, many more live by themselves, with a friend, or in a nursing home.
However, the increasing proportion〔比例〕of elderly people has given them a new political power. They have formed some organizations to voice their own needs and demands to local and federal governments. They often ask the members of the government to vote for increasing Social Security benefits〔资金〕,better health care, income tax benefits, and rent controls. All this has enabled the public to realize the determination of the elderly to show their ability to deal effectively with own lives.

Sir,
The majority of your readers must have been surprised and shocked to read a letter from Mr.R. Hogg, published in last Wednesday's Herald. Mr. Hogg seems to think that his own convenience and that of motorists in general are the only things that matter
in our city.
I would have more sympathy〔同情〕with Mr. Hogg if he just made suggestions to, improve the situation. No doubt his problems would be partly solved if the local government built a multi-storey car park in the city centre, instead of encouraging motorists to use public transport. All the same judging from the. tone of Mr. Hogg’s letter,I suspect that motorists who are so careless of pedestrians〔行人〕safety that they would rather park their cars on the pavement than hold up the traffic would probably be too lazy to use a multi-storey car park if they had to walk a few hundred yards to,heir destination(目的地〕afterwards.
My main reason for writing, however,is much more important.Does Mr Hogg realize that, according to figures issued by the Department of Transport,13,000 people were knocked down in Britain last year because of cars being illegally parked either on the pavement or on crossing? In fact, although the total pedestrian casualty 〔伤亡事故〕rate has fallen over the last ten years, there has been an increase in accidents caused when pedestrians have to step out into the road to avoid parked cars on the pavement and cannot see oncoming traffic.
I cannot share Mr.Hogg’s view that the government have paid little attention to long suffering motorists, and I think the punishment for dangerous parking should be made severe enough to stop all motorists from breaking the law in this way. A WALKER,
Proudfoot Lane,Carchester

The salmon is one of man’s most valuable fish.It offers him food, sport, and profit.Every year commercial fishermen harvest over a billion pounds of salmon from the sea.Hundreds of thousands of salmon are caught each year by eager sports fishermen.
In autumn, the rivers of the Northwestern United States come alive with salmon. The salmon have left the ocean and are on their yearly run upriver to spawn.Yet today, there are far fewer salmon than ever before, because the salmon population has suffered from many perils of the modern age.
Water pollution has killed many salmon by robbing them of oxygen. Over-fishing has further decreased their numbers.Dams are another danger, because they block migration paths.Fish ladders, made up of stepped pools, have been built so that salmon can swim safely over the dams. But young salmon swimming to the ocean have trouble finding the ladders.Often they fall to their deaths over the dam or are killed in giant hydroelectric turbines.
So that America will continue to have plenty of salmon, conservationists have planned several ways to increase the salmon population.Conservation officials have had some success raising salmon in hatcheries and stocking salmon flyers with them.Salmon are also being introduced into new areas. In 1966,hundreds of thou sands of young Coho salmon were planted in streams off Lake Michigan. The adults were expected to migrate to the lake and feed upon an undesirable fish called the alewife. The Cohoes thrived so well on the alewives in Lake Michigan that Cohoes are being planted in other Great Lakes.
Thanks to the foresight and planning of conservationists, the valuable salmon should be around American shores, rivers, and lakes for a long time to come.9.On the whole, the article tells about________ .

I attended a meeting on 12th July to discuss the proposed building of a nuclear power station near the city.A spokesman for the Nuclear Energy Advisory Group summarized the reasons for choosing nuclear energy, the benefits it would bring, and then went on to talk about matters of safety.
Atmospheric pollution of the area around the city is at present very high. There
is also the problem of acid rain, which is responsible for widespread damage to nearby forests and lakes,as well as to the city’s historic buildings. It was pointed out that nuclear energy does not add to the greenhouse effort or produce acid rain,so using nuclear energy would result in a much cleaner environment.
It was mentioned that were we to use nuclear energy as an energy source the cost of electricity would decrease significantly.Apparently, once the power station was in operation,we should expect reductions in the cost of electricity of up to 30%.Another benefit to the community would be the creation of several hundred jobs. The spokesman for the NEAG was eager to point out that fears of possible dangers to health or to the environment were unfounded. She assured us that very strict safety measures would be taken and there would be no question of nuclear waste being dumped near the city or in the surrounding area. The NEAG ruled out the possibility of an accident ever happening.

Crossroads International
How does Crossroads work?
Crossroads is a resource network. We take goods Hong Kong doesn’t want and give them to people who badly need them.We collect those goods and give them out in the welfare arena〔福利院〕 in Hong Kong,Mainland China, elsewhere in Asia,Eastern Europe and Africa. So Crossroads is just that:a Crossroads between need and resource. Who do we help?
The welfare agencies we help do not run on large budgets〔预算〕.They are grass-root groups who have seen a need and tried to meet it.They can’t get the job done without back-up,though,so our task is to help them do their task.Cur warehouse is full of goods, from computers to high chairs, clothing to books,
stationery to medical provision, cupboards to dining sets. They send us a list of their needs and we try to match it with the resource we have in stock.
How do we operate?
Crossroads itself also operates on a low budget. We do not buy the goods we send. They are donated〔捐赠〕.Similarly, rather than raising funds for freight〔货运〕,we ask transport companies to donate their services.Nobody in our organization receives a salary.Even our full-time staff work on a voluntary basis.
Those that donate goods and services:
Factories Manufacturers
Hospitals Hotels
Educational Institutions Householders
Transport Companies Offices
Other Charities
One resource that we are always in need of is people. While we receive large quantities of goods and there is never a short supply of requests for them,we are always in need of hands to help sort and prepare them for shipping.
What can I do?
We are always in need of people. We have a lot of tasks. If you are volunteering regularly,we can offer work in some of the following categories, some of the time. You are welcome to number your top three choices and we will do our best to accommodate 〔提供〕them.
Clothing categorization Sewing
